Ready to learn the history, philosophy, and practice of an experienced professional in the test prep industry? MEET OUR GUEST Meet Jim Wismer, the Director of Ivy Experience. Jim first started tutoring for pay in eighth grade, and he has since earned a broad range of experience in secondary and higher education. Jim taught Latin and Ancient Greek and served as a T.A. in Greek and Roman history and mythology courses while earning his M.A. in Classics at the University of Notre Dame. After graduating with his Master's, he helped a small independent school develop a K-12 Latin curriculum. Jim has been tutoring primarily test prep (but still some dead languages) since finishing graduate school, when he came on board as a tutor for Ivy Experience. One year in, he was promoted to Director, transitioning into a managerial role involving training and overseeing tutors, planning with families, creating marketing materials, and various business functions. If you had told Jim as a young scholar that he would one day be a reasonably successful businessperson, that would have been quite the surprise to him. Jim enjoys digging into the way students' minds work, whether that means finding just the right way to help them "get" an SAT math problem or brainstorming how to develop their own most time-efficient method to memorize Latin conjugations. Jim doesn't really have hobbies, preferring temporary, all-consuming obsessions. Over the years, these have included yoga, Super Smash Bros Melee, camping, fantasy football, the Wim Hof method, and darts, to name a few. Find Jim at https://myivyexperience.com/contact/. Let's talk about digital identity with Jim Pasquale, EVP Interoperability at digi.me. In the final episode of series 2, Oscar and Jim discuss the problem of "digital exhaust" – the data trail (including identity data) that consumers leave as they go about life online, which they often have little control over. Jim fills us in on why this data needs to be better managed – and how. He also explores the importance of interoperability, given his role as Chair of Kantara's Information Sharing Interoperability working group. "If you give data, you'll get better data back." Jim Pasquale is a veteran innovator with a passion for disruption. He has deployed large and complex software systems with the world's largest telcos and communications companies to improve engagement, conversion and customer experience. Jim is currently EVP Interoperability at digi.me. Find Jim on LinkedIn and Twitter @jpasquale. There's this weird obsession with hustle culture, where you're made to feel that if you're not working 70 hour weeks, putting in time on weekends, and skipping holidays that you must be doing something wrong. But that lifestyle simply isn't sustainable and you either end up burning out or making really bad personal decisions. What if there was another way? And not just from a mindset perspective, but from an operations perspective? Jim Vaselopulos, host of The Leadership Podcast, has been in the game for a long time, building his name as a sales leader, C-suite advisor, and investor. You'd think with so much experience he must have done this through hustling hard day in and day out. But not so much — in fact Jim describes himself as lazy. Jim's been a mentor of mine for several years and he steps to the mic to share his strategies on how can get more by doing less.Find Jim online:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jimvaselopulos/Find Rafti advisors:https://www.raftiadvisors.com/Plus: Hear the elevator pitch of Startup Hypeman portfolio client Swish House, using the Que PASA Elevator Pitch(TM) Formula! Jim was guided to a mystery school back in 2012 where he studied the inner secrets of the mind. Dreams, concentration, meditation, visualization. He learned very quickly that he was very skilled at lucid dreaming and accessing the inner levels. These experiences showed him that there is a vast world to explore within the universal subconscious mind and that anyone can access these realms. Meditation became one of his favorite activities and he has now created a course sharing all the secrets he learned and is very passionate about helping others tune in to the present moment , turn on their imagination and transcend their limitations and the physical world. We open the show with a couple of bottles of wine, a few cheeses, salami and bread as any great construction podcast should start. We don’t sugarcoat it…Covid is killing small business or should we say selective lockdown is killing small business. The panel today gets right into the motives behind the Canadian government and how they are handling the pandemic, lockdowns, and small business owners or should we say small business survivors. What is the real reason for this 2nd lockdown? The government is saying to prevent a burden on the health care system. When you actually look at the actual real health numbers, which by the way Alberta has been the only province to share this info, the actual number is 26 people of 297,000 people in Alberta with Covid have died, less than 1 percent and by the way that healthy person is over 70 years old. All of these cases we keep hearing about and the justification of the lockdown and restrictions are numbers from 99% of Covid mixed with underlining issues. Our government should be sharing all of the information, not just the information that will benefit big corporate. The medical industry is now controlling the economy, is that right? Is that fair? There are more deaths from driving than Covid, are we going to lockdown driving? More deaths in skiing than Covid, are we going to lockdown skiing? We discuss the recent Adamson’s police and government fiasco and why and what did he really do wrong? We discuss the Canadian Charter of Rights, The Canadian Bill of Rights and what our small business is allowed to do. The conversation gets warmed up and we don’t hold back. Are restaurants really the cause of the spread of Covid? They are not and yet the government is forcing these small businesses to close and die.Dave expresses a 3rd lockdown will happen in early January, as soon as this one is done, the 3rd one will begin and there will also be a 4th lockdown. Are these selective lockdowns really doing anything? We all get quiet as Dave shares his thoughts. We discuss the cause and effects of Covid on families, domestic issues, divorces and the overall mental strain on the communities for years to come after Covid. Thanks to Dave and Mark for being on the show and sharing so much about the pandemic and small business and the construction industry.Find Jim @carukhallconstruction www.carukhall.com info@carukhall.com 416 546-8602. Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week I am thrilled to welcome Jim McKelvey to the What’s Next Podcast! Jim is a serial entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, artist, and author of The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time. He's the co-founder of Square and served as the chairman of its board until 2010, and still serves on the board of directors. In 2011, his iconic card reader design was inducted into the Museum of Modern Art. Jim also founded Invisibly, an ambitious project to rewire the economics of online content. In 2016, he became a deputy chair of the St. Louis Federal Reserve. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… budding entrepreneurs and those who never saw themselves as the fabled “entrepreneurial type.” TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… Jim shares his own history with and relationship to entrepreneurship, as well as the process of writing his exciting new book The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time! Jim knows what it’s like to get excited about problems that need to be solved–like the genesis of Square. He takes this time with the What’s Next! audience to demystify the “myth of the entrepreneur” and drive home that it’s not just okay, but normal, to not necessarily be “qualified” to innovate. By definition, no one is yet qualified to do what hasn’t been done! If you’re doing something new you don’t get to copy, and you don’t necessarily get to feel qualified. Your awareness of timing is also huge, you can do the “right thing” at the wrong time and get a terrible result. You don’t get a guarantee, so get comfortable with discomfort and stop worrying about being the most “qualified.” Focus on the problem and fix through the fear! WHAT I LOVE MOST… His perspective and his bias for copying and competence. There’s no time to waste! Jim regularly gigs on the comedy circuit (or did before lockdown), he has written and performed for sketch shows and presented for Yahoo's The Football Show and JOE.co.uk's Friday Football Live as well as featuring on BBC 5live, BT Sport, London Live and TalkSPORT. He also has a strong social media following for his original, sports-related comedy content especially on YouTube where he posts hilarious sketches regularly (under Jim Daly Comedy). Jim plays down his abilities. I laughed a bit too loud at some points during the interview so had to cut my sound out. He is a great guy who has an astute understanding of what it means to be human. Something that I personally believe comedians have to be incredibly skilled at. I admire his honesty about all things Jim and I'm sure you will too. It all started when Jim wanted to build a circuit board... and it ended with $2 billion in sales and the entire line of Danby appliances. But that's what happens when you have the innovativity, desire and pure generosity that Jim has. In this episode, Jim shares with us the skills that you need to grow your business and hit that level of sales that you never thought was possible. Plus he has a word or two about new shipping methods that you might find to be a little outlandish, or maybe just the dawn of a new era. My Guest: Jim Estill Jim Estill is CEO of both of Danby Appliances and ShipperBee a new venture that is revamping outdated shipping channels into a system that's better for consumers, retailers and the environment. Jim is a Canadian technology entrepreneur, executive, and philanthropist. He started his first computer distribution business from the trunk of his car while in university and grew that business to $2 Billion in sales. Jim has invested in, mentored and advised many technology companies including Blackberry. He joined their board before they went public and served for 13 years. Over the past few years Jim has been involved in sponsorship efforts to settle over 100 refugee families in Guelph. The Financial Times, BBC News, The Guardian, and CBC, have all covered his story. In 2018 Jim Estill was awarded the Order of Canada. Jim is the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 Ontario winner. Episode Highlights: [02:11] I was an engineer in university, I wanted to design circuit boards. I needed a computer and I got a better deal if I bought two of them. So I bought two of them, sold one of them. And then someone else wanted a computer. So I bought another two and then someone wanted a printer and someone wanted some software. So next thing you know, I'm buying and selling computer products. [07:35] We had well over a million square feet of warehouse, most recently. About five years before that we bought a 620,000 square foot facility which was our main one of the facilities. [14:43] Cursing is just laziness. Like if you have to curse, it's laziness. And it might offend some people. Do I want to offend some people? No. I might be offending my customers. I might be offending my suppliers. I might be offending my employees. [23:15] I love this idea but my first question...the risk of having your stuff handled by so many laypeople and you know, thieving and all that stuff. You having everyday people who are not insured or not accredited or not anything, picking up your stuff and knocking it around. [30:28] And when the parcel gets dropped off, you get an email or a text to say you've got a four-pound parcel. If the driver takes the time to scan the barcode, you know what the barcode is. Or, if you're doing a return to Amazon, or whatever, you just give the driver the code and he can punch in the code. [43:39] I sell to Costco well, that means I can sell something else to Costco because I have a relationship there. I already have a vendor number, they already have approved me. It's easy for me to sell one more product. Quote: Fail often, fail fast, fail cheap. When’s the last time you remembered a new phone number? This used to be the norm, but now most of us rely on our digital devices for everything from phone numbers to directions and even basic math. This might feel harmless but it’s actually doing our brains a disservice. We’re living in an age of digital dementia, because we don’t have to rely on our brains for the memorization and navigation we used to. But it doesn’t have to be that way—we can retrain ourselves to learn faster, retain information better, and really maximize our time spent learning. The secret is meta-learning, or the science of learning how to learn. There’s no better person to dive into this topic than Jim Kiwk, my guest today on The Doctor’s Farmacy. Jim is the founder of Kwik Learning and a widely recognized world expert in speed-reading, memory improvement, brain performance, and accelerated learning. For over two decades he has served as the brain coach to many of the world’s leading C-suite executives and celebrities. After a childhood brain injury left him learning-challenged, Jim created strategies to dramatically enhance his mental performance. He has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their true brainpower to learn faster and perform smarter. His recent book, Limitless, provides the keys to accelerated learning and endless potentialThis episode is sponsored by my Sleep Master Class and Joovv. In this modern world we place too much value on staying busy and deprioritizing sleep which is why I have created my first ever Masterclass which guides you through the most important steps to getting better sleep today. Jim shares more of his great insight into the construction industry.Jim gets into his details and what has worked for him and his clients, from plaster crown to his love for wood trim. He discusses how the trades have changed over the decades and what they are like today versus the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Keeping the jobsite clean, professional, and how to deal with the new digital age on site and online.Jim has always had a love for the business and anyone can see it when they walk through one of his homes. He has built himself a few homes and sold those homes for exactly what they were worth and stuck to his price because of the respect of the work, a few great stories about those sales. We finally get into Jim’s other passion, Renos For Heroes a charity he began to help wounded soldiers. Jim with help from the Canadian government has helped so many people that have given up so much.Lastly we get into van or pick-up, what tool brand is he and a few interesting quick question and answer inquires.A massive thank you to Jim for spending the 3 plus hours with us talking construction. Really appreciate your time, your knowledge, your stories. We have Jim Caruk, the man, legend, the Godfather of Construction on the show and he has nearly 50 years of experience to share with us. So much talk we had to split the show into two parts, Corleone would be so proud.Starting his career in construction right out of high school with a major in trades, sheet metal, Jim went right into Union work, the year was 1973. He did the sheet metal work for 15 years, worked hard, learned a lot about the business and people, made an enemy or two along the way, then decided to go on his own. Began a two-man renovation business and went right into the work for the love of it. Started with small renos, then came an addition with no access to the back, so Jim suggested go underneath the home, they did. Turned out, that particular reno was for a TV producer and with a camera following Jim the hit show Real Renos was born, that was the early 2000’s and went on for 8 years. Jim had one request with the show, whatever happened, happened, it doesn’t get changed, and that went both ways, the clients can say whatever they want and so could he, and he did. That is what made it real compared to what is currently on TV today.Jim has had his fair share of issues with the Ministry of Labour and he brings up a few of the good ones, mixed in with Inspectors arriving on site. Jim gets right into what makes a good contractor, what makes a successful renovation company, yes there are bad clients and there are great ones that have hired him several times. Of course Jim has lost money on projects, walked away from projects but he has always stayed loyal to the construction and his passion, and building.Lastly on this first part, Jim tells us why homes are so expensive today. He shares how clients know how to screw contractors over. Why he is well respected by his crew that have been with him for 2 decades or more and by the new guys.A massive thank you to Jim for spending the 3 plus hours with us talking construction. Really appreciate your time.Find Jim at www.carukhall.com@jimcaruk@carukhallconstructionThis is The Construction Lifewww.theconstructionlife.com

April 22, 2019 - We welcome a familiar face back into our time machine, and travel back to a parched New York City, suffering from a drought that began in a sweltering 1949, and stretched into 1950 with no end in sight. Desperate for rain, Mayor William O’Dwyer hired Dr. Wallace E. Howell, a handsome, 35-year-old meteorologist out of Harvard who approached weather modification as a cool-headed scientist, not a Music Man-style huckster. We meet this headline-making man with his head literally in the clouds in Howell's Storm: New York City's Official Rainmaker and the 1950 Drought, by author Jim Leeke. Jim is a contributor to the Society for American Baseball Research Baseball Biography Project, as well as the writer or editor of several books on U.S. and military history. We chatted previously with Jim about his books, Nine Innings for the King: The Day Wartime London Stopped for Baseball, July 4, 1918, and, From the Dugouts to the Trenches: Baseball During the Great War, as well as his Civil War novel for young adults, Matty Boy. A string of appearances, which makes Jim our first four-peat guest. Find Jim on Twitter @JimLeeke.

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. Today’s guest is Jim Harris, author of Blindsided: How to Spot the Next Breakthrough that Will Change Your Business Forever. Jim is a principal at Strategic Advantage and has 20 years of experience as a professional speaker and consultant. Jim speaks internationally at more than 40 conferences per year on essential topics such as creativity, innovation, customer relationships, strategic planning, and environmental leadership. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… innovative thinkers. Innovation is coming here. Our professional lives are different than they were five years ago; our personal lives are drastically different they were ten years ago. How you approach change will determine your success. If you don’t want to be blindsided, pay attention to your systems and processes and keep the younger employees involved in strategy. Remember, diversity goes way beyond gender. Choose a team of bright people and create job opportunities. Innovation ultimately means that everything gets lighter, faster, and cheaper, and that’s ok. TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… Change happens and if you want to keep up — whether that’s with social media, viral videos, staying agile, going direct to consumer, etc. — you’re going to have to figure out a way to be current. Think about Tesla’s integrated solutions: they have energy solutions, power walls, and cars. It’s more than filling one need. It’s about finding innovative methods to solve multiple problems via one platform. WHAT I LOVE MOST… No matter how these conversations start, it comes back to being sure that we’re focusing on the right things. It’s not about thinking and talking; it’s about execution and putting your product in the hands of your customers. A PIECE OF ADVICE… create an ecosystem to bring your idea to fruition. People don’t work in a vacuum; it’s about the power of the whole, especially the employees.
