This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with friend of the show Jay Garrison about our chess summers. Jay's was full of interesting activities like the Naroditsky Memorial Tournament and the Charlotte Chess Center elite camp. He played a lot of blitz, did tactics, and worked on calculation. Jay played in two classical events that weren't the success stories that he hoped they would be. My summer was full of plugging gaps in my knowledge/skill regarding attacking and defending chess, openings, and calculation. I had the best tournament summer of my chess career ending at 1866.  Chessbook: chessbook.com/?ref=kevin Chessiverse Code: DrSCULL20 Check out my new Substack: https://substack.com/@drscull My Chessable Course! https://www.chessable.com/chess-journeys-tactics-workbook-turning-knowledge-into-skill/course/268850/ Chessnut Link/Code: Code - KEVINSCULL https://www.chessnutech.com?sca_ref=7643464.HueBIKWTYE Get 20% off GM Noël Studer's courses with Coupon chessjourneys20 The Simplified Chess Improvement System: https://courses.nextlevelchess.blog/courses/simplified-chess-improvement-system?ref=04f5d8 My Road to 2200 Youtube series: https://youtu.be/BzKYDt5oBU8 Be sure to check out the Chess Journeys Merch Store! This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Joel. He is a returning guest from episode 23 (4.5 years ago). We talked about where he was then, rated about 1600, and what he was doing to improve. We spent most of the episode talking about his current training program, running a chess club, and helping his children enjoy chess. Joel has adopted a more simplistic approach to training, which has netted him 200 rating points! He talked about the joy of running a chess club and how to start one. It was fun catching up with a guest that has since so much rating improvement and joy for chess. Host Khristen Massic peels back the curtain on why most first week data collection quietly fails in the secondary classroom and what to do instead. The episode's big question—how to collect and actually use first-week student information—drives every tip, every honest confession, and every practical pivot you'll hear.Let's talk about how most teachers collect information about their students in the first week, but very few ever use it. This isn't about laziness or apathy—it's a design problem, not a motivation one. Khristen recounts her own experience: digital surveys stored neatly in her drive, brimming with students' likes and preferences, forgotten the second the whirlwind of real teaching begins. When it comes time to group students or provide support, who has the bandwidth at 7:45 a.m. to dig through unwieldy forms? The truth is, almost none of us.The primary keyword phrase, “how you learn about them as learners,” isn't just for search—it's at the heart of Khristen's mission. The conversation challenges the tired script of collecting student interests (what movies they love or if they play basketball) and instead urges you to dig for learning preferences and habits that actually inform your next move. If you know a student does better when they see an example first or needs time to process before sharing, that's not just trivia—it's the kind of actionable data that shapes your classroom culture and day-to-day teacher decisions.A standout moment is when Khristen describes reshaping her own survey process. She moves from gathering likes to “The Way I Learn”—a simple, scannable one-pager where students check boxes, circle group work preferences, and jot down a couple of short answers about their learning needs. No more endless scrolling through Google Forms or parsing out paragraphs. When students reveal they “wait and watch” in class or need step-by-step instructions when stuck, Khristen can grab that info in seconds—actually using it while planning group work, scaffolding complex tasks, or providing targeted support.Khristen makes a crucial distinction: knowing your students is not the same as knowing how your students learn, and only the latter makes your life easier and your teaching sharper. She walks through ways this shift helps with intentional planning and grouping, from pairing students who need partners to visibly showing instructions for those who've asked for them. The point? Use student feedback to drive teacher moves, not as an afterthought.First week surveys aren't “one and done”—Khristen advocates revisiting them midsemester to capture how students evolve as learners. Maybe that group work-resister in September is newly open by January, thanks to intentional classroom routines and a culture that feels safer. These comparisons tell you who needs support—and show students you're still paying attention.Who needs this episode? Middle and high school teachers in the trenches with multiple preps—anyone who cares less about icebreakers and more about responsible, responsive teaching. Khristen's rebel streak comes through: classroom culture isn't built on cutesy activities or delivering a syllabus at lightning pace. It's about trust, responsiveness, and proving through action that you're tuned in to how each student learns, not just who they are outside your classroom.Looking for teacher tips that work in secondary? This is your episode. Khristen talks secondary classroom realities, balancing classroom routines, and the nuts and bolts of executing this mindset shift without burning out. The episode delivers ways to make survey data work for you, rather than one more thing on your to-do list. So, does your first week set students up to feel understood—or just watched? Khristen leaves you with a challenge for yourself and your classroom, nudging you to close the gap between knowing students and understanding them as learners. One builds familiarity. The other builds trust, and trust is what makes your classroom culture unbreakable.Finish something that makes tomorrow lighter. Let's teach like we mean it.

No Followers. No Credentials. No Prior Clients. Bulletproof Side Hustle System Turning Entrepreneurs Into Resume Goldminers Make money online with an AI resume optimization agency—no followers, credentials, or prior clients needed. Learn the step-by-step system Marcus used to hit $4,200/month building resume and cover letter services with free tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Canva, Grammarly). Discover the ATS-beating formula that defeats the 75% rejection rate, plus the ethical framework that separates real AI entrepreneurs from scheme-sellers. Your contrarian guide to turning zero into a scalable, guilt-free side hustle. https://DarkHorseEntrepreneur.com Tracy explains how to start and scale an AI-assisted resume and cover letter service using free tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Canva Free, Grammarly) and a system designed to beat ATS filters that reject about 75% of applicants. Using an example of "Marcus," who went direct to clients and grew to $4,200 in a month, it argues success comes from process, not credentials or marketing. The approach includes a diagnostic intake (15-question Google Form), ATS-focused prompting, an industry-specific template library, a simple one-off offer via a free Carrd landing page, and client outreach on LinkedIn. It then describes productizing into self-serve and upgraded tiers (including LinkedIn optimization) using automation (Typeform branching, Zapier, low-cost ChatGPT API) while warning about the ethical tradeoff of generic output and recommending a hybrid with a brief human review to add specificity and storytelling.   00:00 AI Resume Side Hustle 00:49 The Invisible Advantage 01:13 Marcus Case Study 02:00 What Clients Want 02:50 Diagnostic Intake Questions 03:38 Prompts That Reframe 04:58 Template Library System 06:15 Simple Offer Landing Page 06:41 Direct Outreach And Delivery 08:23 Systematize With Forms 10:04 Packages And Upsells 11:02 Productize And Automate 12:39 Quality And Ethics Trap 15:24 Translator Mindset 16:49 Whiskered Wisdom 18:08 One Action Today ai resume writing, make money online with AI, AI side hustles, ATS optimization service, freelance resume writing, side hustle, ChatGPT resume writing, AI income, how to start a resume writing business, AI tools, make money online as a mom, AI powered side hustle ideas, resume writing business, online business, AI freelance business   ai side gig, digital entrepreneur, Entrepreneur, entrepreneur podcast, entrepreneur tips, Entrepreneurship, Entreprenuer, make money, online business, online entrepreneurship, online opportunities, parenting and entrepreneurship, podcast entrepreneur, side hustles, tips for entrepreneurs, make money online, ai resume optimization, ai entrepreneur
