Ironically, although those categories and things categorical are supposed to be absolute and fundamental, philosophers have long argued about the number and type of categories that exist and the role they play in our understanding of the world. In today's functional CPG market, how would you categorize what is (or isn't) a beverage? There's a growing format expansion trend within key functional beverage categories that's causing most consumers to provide a widening variance in definitions. But the mainstreaming version of the “beverage identity crisis” was something I started talking more about publicly during the “Great Shutdown” period because there was this perfect storm of converging factors that provided an extra tailwind for this format expansion trend within key functional CPG categories. Yet, it's that reversed format expansion playbook direction of “ready-to-mix (RTM) powder to ready-to-drink (RTD) beverage” that I want to unpack some more for you. That's primarily because it could very well become the dominant build model process amongst functional CPG entrepreneurs…one that we will begin seeing play out repeatedly within other growing functional CPG categories, thus causing more “beverage identity crisis” scenarios in the future. The massive mainstream success of Bang Energy consciously (or subconsciously) inspired many sports nutrition brand entrepreneurs to take the leap from pre-workout powders to energy drinks. See…those tens (or hundreds) of millions in high-margin energy drink adjacent categorical retail sales were now seen as more than numbers in a spreadsheet or bank account, but members of an audience. And it's those powerful audiences that have become defensible competitive moats and valuable business assets for CPG brands. Admittedly, sports nutrition brands (like C4 Energy, GHOST, and Alani Nu) didn't invent the “build an audience first strategy,” but they've perfectly leveraged it by also operating within the shadows of harder to track sales channels like specialty and ecommerce…where they can incubate powdered pre-workout energy supplement platforms that can then be extended into the beverage format. And the proof is in today's retail sales data for just how disruptively successful this “build process” has become within the energy drinks market. And what should be even more scary (for at least categorical incumbents), is that below the Top 10 energy drink brands, there's many more strong powdered pre-workout energy supplement platforms that are in different phases of beverage commercialization strategies. Oh…and surprise-surprise, this “changing of the guard” isn't just isolated to the energy category. Albeit a few years behind, the same thing is starting to play out within the hydration category. Beyond energy and hydration, I'll also cover the last of the “Big 3” mainstream functional beverage categories because protein is a bit different. While sports drinks and energy drinks are several multiples larger in total market size compared to hydration and energy powdered supplements, ready-to-mix protein powders outsell RTD protein beverages when you consider the entire multichannel sales landscape. So, it probably begs the question…why don't we then see the highest number of “powder to liquid” format swapping sports nutrition brand disruptors in the protein category? I'll explore those differing barriers-to-entry considerations...but explain why 2024 and 2025 could end up being filled with impressive launches by sports nutrition brands “protein powder market leaders” that have strong audiences of loyal customers. Finally, I'll analyze three other functional CPG categories (greens, relaxation, and gut health) that each should see similar blurring of categorical definitions in the next handful of years. Dr. Paul Lessard and his collaborators have written a paper on "Categorical Deep Learning and Algebraic Theory of Architectures". They aim to make neural networks more interpretable, composable and amenable to formal reasoning. The key is mathematical abstraction, as exemplified by category theory - using monads to develop a more principled, algebraic approach to structuring neural networks. We also discussed the limitations of current neural network architectures in terms of their ability to generalise and reason in a human-like way. In particular, the inability of neural networks to do unbounded computation equivalent to a Turing machine. Paul expressed optimism that this is not a fundamental limitation, but an artefact of current architectures and training procedures. The power of abstraction - allowing us to focus on the essential structure while ignoring extraneous details. This can make certain problems more tractable to reason about. Paul sees category theory as providing a powerful "Lego set" for productively thinking about many practical problems. Towards the end, Paul gave an accessible introduction to some core concepts in category theory like categories, morphisms, functors, monads etc. We explained how these abstract constructs can capture essential patterns that arise across different domains of mathematics. Paul is optimistic about the potential of category theory and related mathematical abstractions to put AI and neural networks on a more robust conceptual foundation to enable interpretability and reasoning. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A brief history of computers, published by Adam Zerner on July 19, 2023 on LessWrong. Recently I've been learning about the history of computers. I find it to be incredibly interesting. I'd like to write a post about it to summarize and comment on what I've learned. I'm a little hesitant though. I'm no expert on this stuff. I'm largely learning about it all for the first time. So then, take all of this with a grain of salt. It's more of a conversation starter than a finished product. If you want something authoritative, I'd recommend the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Logic Let's start with logic. Computers are largely based on boolean logic. Y'know, 1s and 0s. AND, OR, NOT. George Boole did a bunch of important work here in the mid 1800s, but let's try backing up even further. Was there anything important that came before Boolean logic? Yeah, there was. It goes all the way back to Aristotle in ~350 BCE. Aristotle did a bunch of groundbreaking work in the field of logic. Furthermore, after "breaking the ground", there weren't any significant developments until the mid 1800s. Wow! That's a long time. An unusually long time. In other fields like mathematics, natural sciences, literature and engineering, there were significant advances. I wonder why things in the field of logic were so quiet. Anyway, let's talk about what exactly Aristotle did. In short, he looked at arguments in the abstract. It's one thing to say that: Filo is a dog Therefore, Filo has feet It's another thing to say that: R is a P Therefore, R has Q The former is concrete. It's talking about dogs, feet and Filo. The latter is abstract. It's talking about P's, Q's and R's. Do you see the difference? Before Aristotle, people never thought about this stuff in terms of P's and Q's. They just thought about dogs and feet. Thinking about P's and Q's totally opened things up. Pretty cool. Abstraction is powerful. I think this is very much worth noting as an important milestone in the history of computers. Ok. So once Aristotle opened the flood gates with categorical logic, over time, people kinda piggybacked off of it and extended his work. For example, the Stoics did a bunch of work with propositional logic. Propositional logic is different from categorical logic. Categorical logic is about what categories things belong to. For example, earlier we basically said that dogs belong to the category of "things with feet" and that Filo belongs to the category of "dogs". With those two statements, we deduced that Filo must also belong to the category of "things with feet". It makes a lot of sense when you think about it visually: On the other hand, propositional logic is about things being true or false. For example, with this: I don't have an umbrella we can deduce things like: "It is raining or I have an umbrella" is true Propositional logic is about truth and uses operators like AND, OR, NOT, IF-THEN, and IF-AND-ONLY-IF. Categorical logic is about categories and uses operators like ALL, NO and SOME. After propositional logic, subsequent work was done. For example, predicate logic kinda piggybacked off of propositional logic. But in general, nothing too crazy was going on. Let's jump ahead to the mid 1800s and George Boole. Boole introduced stuff like this: (p and q) is false (p or q) is true (not (p and q)) is true But wait a minute. I'm confused. Didn't we get that sort of thing from propositional logic all the way back in 300 BCE from the Stoics? In researching this question I'm seeing things saying that it did in fact already exist, it's just that Boole made it more "systematic and formalized". I don't understand though. In what way did he made it more systematic and formalized? Oh well. Suffice it to say that boolean logic was a thing that we knew about. Let's move on. Jacquard loom I was going to star...

While the left hemisphere is associated with logical and analytical thinking, the right hemisphere is thought to be responsible for creative and intuitive thinking. But is it really that simple? "Where is the self when no one is thinking about it?" | 10:22 Chris says that many of the problems we experience in life are tied to our self-concept. The question of who we are. Or who we believe ourselves to be. But what if the self is little more than a series of stories we tell ourselves through categories, names, and labels? Do these explain what it really means to be us? Who are you when you're not thinking about it? Thinking With a Both/And Approach | 14:32 We are not searching for the true self on one side or the other. We want the enjoy the dance of left and right brain integration in our experiences. Split-Brain Research and Investigating Two Sides of The Mind | 15:04 Split-brain research refers to the study of the effects of severing the corpus callosum, the structure that connects the two hemispheres of the brain. It suggests there are two fundamentally different modes of processing the world, which we can shift between. This has led to the popular idea that the brain's left hemisphere is more logical and analytical and processes language. In contrast, the right hemisphere is more creative and intuitive and processes spatial information. For more information about split-brain research, Chris recommends The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World by Iain McGilchrist. Tools of The Thinking Interpreter | 18:22 The split-brain studies found an inner interpreter in the left brain, which makes up stories to explain the world and justify our decisions. Categorical identities inform our judgements and beliefs. The story of me that can be taken away at any minute (what we invest our sense of identity in). We need categories, judgements, and beliefs but problems often stem from how we hold them to the idea of an essential or true self.
