Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we discuss two of this week's mega releases - PONNIYIN SELVAN - 1 and VIKRAM VEDHA. But first, our musical correspondent Asim went to the Pasoori concert (04m20s) in London and has many thoughts about the production. Next, we saw the brand new teaser for ADIPURUSH (11m40s)starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan as Ram, Sita, and Raavan respectively and… it's quite something. Sujoy and Amrita both watched Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan (18m25s) - I starring Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, Jeyam Ravi, Prakash Raj, Jayaram and many others, and had slightly divergent thoughts while agreeing that it is a cinematic achievement. For those who're unfamiliar with the source material, we've worked out a strategy that you should first read the plot wiki before watching the film, just to keep up with all the characters. And lastly, all three of us watched Vikram Vedha(45m30s) starring Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, and Radhika Apte. This (very loud) remake of the Tamil movie by its original directors is bound to work better for those who have not seen the version with Vijay Sethupathi and Madhavan. As a bonus, you can hear Asim interview the director duo Gayatri and Pushkar (1h16m20s) and Radhika Apte (1h28m10s)at the end of this episode. Our video interviews are a Patreon exclusive, so if you want to see them, do consider signing up to Khandaan's Patreon page from 1 USD onwards We also announce our first Khandaan London meet up! Sujoy and Asim will be watching Maula Jatt at the O2 Arena- Cineworld afternoon show on Saturday the 15th of October. Shurpanakha was the youngest child of rishi Vishrava from his second wife Kaikeshi. She was the sister of Raavan. She was very beautiful and was called Minakshi (one who has eyes like fish). She fell in love with a Danava prince of the Kalakeya clan named Vidyutjihva/Dushtabudhi and married him against the wishes of her brother Raavan. Once after conquering the underworld Raavan was visiting his sister's place and got into an argument with Vidyutjihva and killed him. Nobody had the power to confront Raavan. Minakshi was distraught but she also couldn't do anything. She became Shurpanakha and started roaming in the woods with her relatives Khar and Dushan but she could never forgive her brother for making her a widow and killing the person she loved. Some narratives suggest that Shurpanakha deliberately instigated Raavan to kidnap mata Sita because she was convinced that only Shri Ram was capable of killing Raavan and take revenge from her brother for making her a widow. Gayati. Live. Breathe. Sing! Informal singing by Gauri Varma
My attempt at the powerful ancient Sanskrit hymn in praise of Lord Shiv, composed by Raavan, ruler of Lanka. Raavan was a scholar, expert in many disciplines and a devout devotee of Lord Shiv. In this hymn, sung through the centuries, Lord Shiv is vividly described dancing his creative/transformative Tandav dance, the vibrations from which fill his devotees' hearts with joy. His dancing figure is visualized through beautiful metaphors and other forms of description in chaste Sanskrit: Shiva dances with blissful abandon to the mesmerizing beat of his 'damru', reddish locks of hair swirling, crescent moon adorning forehead, the River Ganga streaming down from his head, and serpents wrapped around his neck. As he engages in creation and recreation, he is always accompanied by his spouse, Goddess Parvati.

Voices: Vipul Jaiswal as Narrator and Mudit Singhal as 'Bade Bhai Sahab' Sound Design: Gaurav Puri Story Review: Bade Bhai Sahab, one of Premchand's most notable short stories was published in 1910, shortly after he dropped his name Dhanpat Rai and adopted the pseudonym Premchand. The early 1900s were important and interesting times for the Indian freedom movement and its consciousness as a nation. This was the time when nationalism was finally taking firm shape in India with literature both shaping the discourse and responding to it. In fact, in the first instance, it is a merry story about relationship between the narrator and his brother, five years his senior in age and their divergent approaches to studying in school. If one looks closer it is an excellent critique of colonial educational system and its impact on Indians. This was the time when a concerted effort was made to move away from Sanskrit and Muslim education to teaching primarily a Western curriculum with English as the medium of instruction. The ultimate purpose was to make Indians more amenable to British rule and institutions, who could serve as useful intermediaries in imperial expansion. The story cleverly undercuts the superiority of the British when 'Bade Bhai Sahab' scolds his brother on his supposed arrogance, taking interestingly a very Indian example of Raavan and how he fell due to his hauteur. He compares the mighty empire of Raavan with the British Empire, hinting at their fallibility. He then hilariously demonstrates the pointlessness and the absurdity of the English education for the vast majority of Indians and the remoteness of the context when he speaks about remembering the names of dozens of ‘Williams' and ‘James' and ‘Henrys' and how the lack of new names necessitated annoying addition of generational suffixes. A large part of bhai sahab's critique of the education system is valid even today. https://thewire.in/books/revisiting-bade-bhai-sahab-premchands-endearing-short-story Please share our episodes to help us reach out to more audience like you. In this podcast we are reminded of the ability to over come all the hurdles of life through the medium of prayers which consists of bringing the hands together. Mandodari (the wife of the demonic being named Raavan) was able to save the life of her husband through the medium on prayers.
It's so confusing when seriousness is dealt with song and dance. Wish the film was advertised as modern Ram Leela performed in a tribal theater. That expectation would have prepped me to deal with the over-dramatization a lot better.
