This week on Revenue Rehab, Brandi Starr is joined by Karthi Ratnam, a category design expert who believes that creating movements, not just products, is the key to market success—and she's ready to prove it. In this episode, they challenge the notion that category creation is prohibitively expensive and slow, arguing instead that a bold vision and leadership can redefine industries and drive exponential growth. From debunking myths to offering strategic insights, Karthi lays out her case for why revenue leaders need to rethink their approach to category design before it's too late. Do they have it right, or will you change their mind?  Episode Type: Problem Solving  Industry analysts, consultants, and founders take a bold stance on critical revenue challenges, offering insights you won't hear anywhere else. These episodes explore common industry challenges and potential solutions through expert insights and varied perspectives.  Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers:  Topic #1: Challenging the High Cost Myth of Category Design [04:24]  Karthi Ratnam challenges the belief that it's prohibitively expensive to create a new category, labeling this a myth that holds companies back. She argues that the real barrier is not financial but rather a lack of vision and willingness to take risks, comparing it to wanting to go to heaven without the willingness to take necessary steps. Brandi Starr highlights the comfort companies feel with established practices, leading to a discussion on the necessity of disrupting the status quo to lead a market.  Topic #2: Building a Movement vs. Building a Brand [09:24]  Karthi Ratnam differentiates between building a movement and a brand, using historical movements as analogies for category creation. She suggests that movement builders prioritize the category and problem over the brand, highlighting Apple's journey as an example. This challenges traditional marketing practices, prompting Brandi to ask how this approach applies to companies that aren't inherently personal, especially in B2B markets.  Topic #3: The Role of a Charismatic Founder in Movement Building [13:39]  Karthi Ratnam emphasizes that successful category creation hinges on a dynamic and charismatic founder who can rally support beyond conventional marketing. The discussion challenges the notion that any company can build a movement, with Karthi arguing that not everyone should attempt category creation. Brandi questions how this applies in larger organizations where the personality of a single leader might not be the focal point, emphasizing the balance between idealism and operational effectiveness.  The Wrong Approach vs. Smarter Alternative  The Wrong Approach: “So the wrong way to do it right, is to be very myopic about it, to think extremely short term in that, to assume that A, because you're creating a category, you're going to win, like really, really fast, you're going to see wins, but that exponential growth takes a little bit of time.” – Karthi Ratnam  Why It Fails: This approach fails because creating a category is not about quick wins; it involves longer-term vision and effort. Companies that expect immediate results may become discouraged when they don't materialize, which can lead to abandoning the initiative prematurely. It's about more than just investment—it's about having the vision and courage to disrupt existing norms.  The Smarter Alternative: Companies should recognize that while they can see wins along the way, the journey to category dominance involves gradual exponential growth. Leaders must commit to a long-term vision, focusing on truly disruptive innovation rather than just financial considerations. Embrace the risk of the unknown and be prepared to weather the challenges along the path to establishing a new category.  The Most Damaging Myth  The Myth: “The biggest myth is that it's super expensive to create a category, and it's really hard to have it realize potential in the short and medium term.” – Karthi Ratnam  Why It's Wrong: Companies often hide behind the belief that financial constraints are their main barrier to category creation when, in fact, it is the lack of vision and willingness to take risks that truly hold them back. This myth causes organizations to remain static, instead of embracing disruptive opportunities that could redefine their market position.  What Companies Should Do Instead: Focus on a strong vision and have the courage to disrupt the status quo. Companies should prioritize innovative thinking and be willing to navigate the uncertainties of creating new categories to lead movements that matter.  The Rapid-Fire Round  Finish this sentence: If your company is trying to create a category, the first thing you should do is _  "Have the founders start evangelizing your point of view." – Karthi Ratnam  What's one red flag that signals a company has a category problem—but might not realize it yet?  "Lack of alignment on the point of view."  What's the most common mistake people make when trying to fix this?  "Becoming emotional."  What's the fastest action someone can take today to make progress?  "Take the first step."  Buzzword Banishment  Karthi's buzzword to banish is "revenue marketer." She dislikes this term because she believes all marketing should inherently be in service of revenue, making the distinction unnecessary. Karthi argues that separating "revenue marketers" from other marketers suggests a false divide, diminishing the contributions of brand marketers who also aim to drive revenue.   Links:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karthiratnam/  Subscribe, listen, and rate/review Revenue Rehab Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts , Amazon Music, or iHeart Radio and find more episodes on our website RevenueRehab.live

The film has been warmly received by the audiences and is a breath of fresh air for Tamil cinema. Films with strong writing, a slice-of-life genre with male characters written as gentle and vulnerable have become rare. There is such a homogeneity of genre dominated by action, masala and violence that a Meiyazhagan deserves to be celebrated not just for how good it is but also for the mere fact that it exists. Prem Kumar joins Aditya and Subha Rao to talk about the writing decisions, what was cut from the opening scene, music and lyrics, the characters of Arul and Mei, the trimming decisions by distributors and the importance of the small and mid budget film, and more. Potluri & Kavin Anne Screenplay & direction: Vamsi Paidipally Release date: March 25th, 2016  Context and thoughts: Hattrick for all 3 people, red hot off Sankranthi 2016 and first big movie to release that summer. Teaser gave full positive vibes and then trailer was superb. Karthi and Vamshi came to MEK to promote the film. Movie came out and had blockbuster talk as a feel good movie. Watched it on OTT and it was amazing. Such a great film. Rewatch it was ok. Oopiri is a film that is a one time watch to feel those emotions and experience for the first time. I'm not sure you can feel it again. Karthi performance carries the movie and is the most entertaining part.  Interesting Facts: https://www.idlebrain.com/movie/postmortem/oopiri.html Acting: Karthi telugu debut and he delivered a knockout performance. The highlight of the movie.  Nagarjuna acting in a wheelchair is excellent. Entirely depends on expression. Same charm, charisma, and screen presence even in a wheelchair.  Tamannah has never looked prettier and does he role very well as the attractive secretary. Prakash Raj is dignified as Nag's friend and the paint thread is the best.  Kalpana Garu is superb. Ali is hilarious and Jayasudha Garu is excellent as usual. The girl who plays Karthi's sister is also MB's sister in Srimanthudu.  Tanikella Bharani has a negative role which turns good later on.  Gabriella Demetriades, Anushkha and Adivi Sesh have cameos.  Writing/Direction: Official adaption of The Untouchables. Done perfectly and adapted to telugu sensibilities brilliantly. The thread of Karthi and Tamannah actually in original they don't get together but to add masala and romance as commercial element its a great payoff. Paint thread is brilliant. And writing is fantastic throughout. Due to the nature of the content, it's not mass masala, its more a drama but Karthi character is specifically created to entertain all sections of the audience.  Favorite scenes: Tammanah asks Karthi to do him a favor, Nagarjuna surprise birthday party, entire paint thread, Tanikella Bharani mass warning scene in most class way, Karthi reconciling with Jayasudha, Nagarjuna letting Karthi go, and Nag meeting anusha. All heart touching, hilarious, and beautiful moments.  One such movie where the title justifies the content lmao. It's actually about life. Has ups and downs but at the end of the day, we are living it.  Technicalities: Music and BGM by Gopi Sundar is excellent. All of the songs are written by Sirivennela and Ramajaoggaya Sastry, one of the greatest combos in Telugu cinema. All of them are superb. My favorite songs are Baby Aagodu, Oka Life, Eppudu. Ayyo Ayyo is a stunner with Karthi and Tamannah chemistry.  Cinematography by PS Vinod is masterclass. One of my favorite DOP and he lit up Paris and Hyderabad in all their glory. The framing, visual brilliance, lighting, everything is perfect. Vinod mass.  Production Design by Sunil Babu is fantastic. The movie maintains the class difference perfectly. All of Nagarjuna's scenes are shown as ultra rich, while all of Karthi's scenes reflect his struggling nature. Whatever setting the scene demanded, it was there.  Overall: Oopiri is a beautiful and refreshing take on life. Karthi, Nagarjuna, and Tamannah are aptly supported by the excellently adapted script and emotions. But as said before it might one of those films you can only watch in it's entirety once. But the comedy scenes and entertainment generated by Karthi is life long I felt.

Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 released a little over a week ago and has taken the box office by storm. A critical and commercial success, the film has attracted a wide demographic to the theatres. Largely due to its source - Kalki R. Krishnamurthy's serialized novel Ponniyin Selvan published in the 1950s, a historical fiction based on the Cholas and the conflicts within and outside the kingdom for the throne. The film, like most Mani Ratnam films, is also an example of technical mastery which is one of the attractions for widespread theatre viewing with almost no one choosing to wait for the streaming release like it is the norm of late. The film is star studded - Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarath Kumar, Parthiban, Prabhu, Lal, Prakash Raj and more. There are stars behind the camera as well apart from the director and writing team (Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel). It is edited by Sreekar Prasad, art direction by Thotta Tharani with cinematography by Ravi Varman. Music is by A.R Rahman and sound design by Anand Krishnamoorthi. Foley Artist is Prathap and re-recording mix by Craig Mann. In this episode, we talk about one aspect of the technical mastery - sound design. Sound Designer/Engineer/Editor Anand Krishnamoorthi joins Aditya and Ashoka to talk about the sound of Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 and the nuances in the art of sound design. We talk about sound design in general in cinema as well as the work that has gone into Ponniyin Selvan. Anand gives both eli5 explanations for some aspects of his work and also some nerdy and deeply technical things that go into a film's sound. Listen on. Welcome to Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast where we discuss two of this week's mega releases - PONNIYIN SELVAN - 1 and VIKRAM VEDHA. But first, our musical correspondent Asim went to the Pasoori concert (04m20s) in London and has many thoughts about the production. Next, we saw the brand new teaser for ADIPURUSH (11m40s)starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan as Ram, Sita, and Raavan respectively and… it's quite something. Sujoy and Amrita both watched Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan (18m25s) - I starring Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, Jeyam Ravi, Prakash Raj, Jayaram and many others, and had slightly divergent thoughts while agreeing that it is a cinematic achievement. For those who're unfamiliar with the source material, we've worked out a strategy that you should first read the plot wiki before watching the film, just to keep up with all the characters. And lastly, all three of us watched Vikram Vedha(45m30s) starring Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, and Radhika Apte. This (very loud) remake of the Tamil movie by its original directors is bound to work better for those who have not seen the version with Vijay Sethupathi and Madhavan. As a bonus, you can hear Asim interview the director duo Gayatri and Pushkar (1h16m20s) and Radhika Apte (1h28m10s)at the end of this episode. Ten years ago Selvaraghavan came up with a film that had nothing in common with the films he had directed up until then. It was a mix of historic fiction and fantasy, with elements like prophecy, "chosen one", deliverance, revenge and black magic. Aayirathil Oruvan starring Karthi, Andrea Jeremiah, Reema Sen and Parthiban received mixed reviews upon its arrival but the film has found an intense following over the last decade. It's nuances are studied with care, subtexts of Eelam and Sri Lankan civil war all too obvious now, along with the most entertaining, confounding and fantastical latter progressions in a Tamil film in recent times. To talk about Aayirathil Oruvan, Aditya is joined by Ashoka with special guests - film critic Sudhir Srinivasan, Entertainment Editor, Cinema Express (The New Indian Express) and Nadika, who returns to The Other Banana once again after the Super Deluxe episode. Here is Arul Mani's article on Selvaraghavan that's discussed in the episode.

Our new episode is not only a double bill but also something unique. For the first time we are talking about a novel. In this podcast, we talk about a one of a kind Tamizh novel. Pettai by Tamizh Prabha that was published by Kalachuvadu Publications in 2017. The novel deals with the history of Chinna Thari Pettai - modern day Chintadripet in Madras, India and the story of a host of interesting characters over the course of four decades till the present day. Aditya along with singer, songwriter and musician Arivu, and independent journalist Kavitha Muralidharan delve deep into the intricacies of the novel to mine the ways in which the author has captured the lives of the people of Chintadripet. No prizes for guessing where he's from. It's a Tamizh novel by Tamizh Prabha so only fair that this episode is completely in Tamizh. Followed by the discussion on Pettai, Tamizh Prabha talks to Aditya about Pa. Ranjith's 2014 film MADRAS, starring Karthi, Kalaiarasan and Catherine Tresa. He has penned the script of the next Pa. Ranjith film starring Arya.
