Mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit zeigt sich Papst Franziskus als Pazifist und dringt auf ein Schweigen der Waffen – sowohl in der Ukraine als auch im Nahen Osten. Ausgesprochen ungern sagt er allerdings, wer in den kriegerischen Konflikten der Aggressor und wer das Opfer ist. So ließ er bei der Karfreitagsprozession in Rom 2022 eine ukrainische und eine russische Frau gemeinsam das Kreuz tragen und setzte somit das Leid der beiden Länder gleich. Zudem räumte er auch mehrfach eine Mitschuld des Westens am Krieg ein. Bis heute wartet die Ukraine auf eine aus ihrer Sicht deutliche Solidaritätsgeste – einen Besuch in Kiew. Doch dorthin will Franziskus nur reisen, wenn er zugleich auch Moskau besuchen kann – wo ihn jedoch niemand empfangen will. Auch im Nahostkonflikt vermeidet der Papst immer wieder eine klare Benennung von Täter und Opfer. So sprach er unmittelbar nach dem Terrorangriff der Hamas vom 7.Oktober von Geschehnissen in Israel, wo die Gewalt stärker eskaliert ist und Hunderte von Toten und Verletzten gefordert hat“. Er gab an, für alle Opfer zu beten, vermied es aber, den Urheber der Gewalt und das Recht auf Selbstverteidigung zu erwähnen. Diese scheinbar neutrale Haltung des Papstes hat der Vorsitzende der Deutschen Bischofskonferenz, Georg Bätzing, deutlich kritisiert. In einem Zeitungsinterview zu Weihnachten 2023 beklagte er sich, dass der Pontifex nicht eindeutig genug darüber spreche, wer Angreifer gewesen sei und wo die Ursachen des entsetzlichen Leides lägen. Der Vatikan wolle als Vermittler möglichst alle Gesprächskanäle offen halten - es gebe aber Situationen, in denen diplomatische Zurückhaltung nicht angemessen sei.

Papst Franziskus I. hat der Ukraine empfohlen, den Mut zum „Hissen der weißen Fahne“ aufzubringen, bevor die Lage im Kriegsgebiet „noch schlimmer“ werde. Damit zog sich der Pontifex maximus den Unmut der ukrainischen Unterstützer zu. Auch Außenministerin Annalena Baerbock kann Franziskus nicht folgen.

Schade, denn auf dem Weltklimagipfel hätte der Pontifex vermutlich eine Brandrede abgefeuert. In Sachen Klima gibt es ja 2 Fraktionen: Die der Weltuntergangs-Propagandisten und die derer, die in einer Haltung aus Glauben und Hoffnung an die Arbeit gehen.Die einen kleben sich auf dem Flughafen fest und protestieren, die anderen machen sich an die politische und praktische Arbeit. Grund genug gibt es in der Tat.Angst und Untergangsszenarien bringen uns nicht weiter. Trotz aller realen Bedrohung lohnt es sich, die andere Seite zu betrachten. Denn in den vergangenen 20 Jahren ist viel geschehen. Wäre es seit damals ungebremst weitergegangen mit den Emissionen, wäre die Temperatur bis zum Jahr 2100 um 5 Grad angestiegen. Stand heute: 2100 3 Grad Steigerung. Fast alle Staaten haben sich auf den Weg gemacht. Sogar China will bis zum Jahr 2060 klimaneutral werden. Die USA und China, weltweit für 40% der Emissionen verantwortlich, haben vereinbart, den Ausbau der erneuerbaren Energie bis 2030 zu verdreifachen.Und Deutschland? Ist keineswegs ein Energie-Wende-Musterland. Im weltweiten Ranking der Bemühungen bekommen wir allenfalls die Note „ausreichend“. Grund genug, die Weltuntergangsprediger auszubremsen und die Haltung der tatkräftigen Hoffnung zu fördern. Ich möchte auf jeden Fall ein – meinetwegen auch manchmal blauäugiger – Optimist bleiben, anstatt mich den finsteren Aposteln des Untergangs anzuschließen. In the 16th century, before the Reformation, only priests were allowed to read the Bible, and the general populace heard it in Latin, a language they didn't understand. The belief was that sins could only be forgiven through a priest's confession and absolution. At the time of death, a priest's presence was essential for the last rites. The medieval Catholic Church viewed priests as a higher, holier class of Christians, intermediaries between God and people. This perspective persists in modern Roman Catholic theology and is also found in many Protestant and non-denominational churches where pastors are highly revered. Martin Luther, a priest himself, challenged this notion. His study of the New Testament revealed no evidence of a superior class within the church with exclusive rights to read scriptures or mediate God's presence. Luther emphasized that all Christians are priests by virtue of their baptism, faith, and the gospel. In the Presbyterian Church, clergy are not referred to as priests because of the belief that every Christian is called to be a priest. Pastors have specific roles, but they are not inherently holier or superior. Everyone stands before God in the righteousness given through Jesus Christ. The New Testament, especially the book of Hebrews, emphasizes this, highlighting that all believers can enter heaven's most holy place because of Jesus' sacrifice. The Old Testament had priests from the tribe of Levi who offered sacrifices for the people to maintain a right relationship with God. These sacrifices foreshadowed Jesus' ultimate sacrifice. The primary role of a priest was to bridge the gap between God and His people. The Latin term for priest, "Pontifex," means bridge builder. In the New Covenant, there's no need for a special class of priests or temple sacrifices. The New Testament declares all Christians as priests. Every believer is called to be a bridge builder, bringing others into God's presence and being a channel of His grace and mercy. This calling is not limited to church settings but extends to homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and every interaction. The priesthood of all believers means that everyone has direct access to God and is also called to be a conduit of His grace and mercy to others.

We can not overlook the fact that what Jesus came to reveal to us was the Kingdom of God. Any king has a government in which He expects His citizens to walk by. If they keep his laws they live and prosper, but if they don't they dry up and perish. This may sound harsh but if the king is a love King then his burden is never heavy and his yoke is always light. God has given every man the measure of faith so we can not say we are not equipped to walk by faith and not by sight. Paul Williams explores this revelation in detail in five minute intervals. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord….So [the shepherds] hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child (Luke 2:8-11,16-17)You just discovered a piece of earth-shattering news. You pull open Twitter or Instagram to share it, but you know you're going to need some help to spread the message. Who will you tag in your post? @CNN? @POTUS? @TaylorSwift13? If the news is religious in nature, maybe you'll tag @Pontifex or @YouVersion? Those would all be logical choices. But you probably wouldn't tag a farmer with a dozen followers who hasn't logged into his Twitter account in years. But that's basically who the angels share the “good news” of Christmas with first—shepherds—one of the lowliest vocations of that time.Then some 30-odd years later, we see Jesus doing the same thing. When he kicked off his public ministry, Jesus didn't enlist the help of Pharisees or other religious professionals to help him spread the gospel of his kingdom. Instead, he called fishermen and tax collectors.What's my point? While God certainly spreads the gospel through pastors and “full-time missionaries” today, he also—dare I say primarily—spreads it through you and me, regular believers working as entrepreneurs, accountants, zookeepers, artists, politicians, and mechanics.Ever since the angels appeared in the shepherds' field, God has made it crystal clear that the work of proclaiming the gospel is not reserved for religious professionals. It is the call of everyone who believes.So as we look to the New Year, don't wait for a missions trip to see yourself as a missionary. Like the shepherds, embrace your work today—whatever that work is—as a vehicle for sharing the good news that a “Savior has been born!”
