Wir, Daniel und Tobi, haben uns darauf geeinigt, diese Kriterien heranzuziehen, um einen aktuellen Überblick über das Jahr zu geben und neun Titel, sowie eine Erweiterung, aus dem Bereich der Familienspiele vorzustellen. Zu Beginn des Gesprächs reflektieren wir über vergangene Nominierungen für den Spiel des Jahres, wobei der Rückblick auf die Liste von 2024 einige interessante Parallelen zu den heutigen Spielen aufzeigt. Wir betrachten die Bewertungen der Community auf BoardGameGeek und stellen fest, dass diese Plattform hauptsächlich von Vielspielern genutzt wird, was bedeutet, dass die Bewertungen nicht unbedingt das allgemeine Publikum widerspiegeln. Einige der Spiele könnten aufgrund ihrer Komplexität und Themenwahl in dieser Umgebung eine gemischte Resonanz erfahren. Der erste Titel auf unserer Liste ist "Für die Krone", ein Deckbuilding-Spiel, das bereits als deutsche Version erschienen ist. One more time, a friend joins me to go back in time to an earlier Spiel des Jahres, looking at the winner but also the other nominees and recommended games. In addition, my guest helps me think about the earlier time itself, and how the games, the hobby, and the community may have changed over the years. This time it's my longtime friend & listener from San Diego, Jonathan Takagi. In fact, he's from a bit north, in Escondido, and Jonathan is another one of the people behind my favorite regional con, EsCon. I'll be going back there in a month! Jonathan decided to pick 2005 because it's twenty years ago...which also happens to be when I started the podcast. Niagara was the game that won the SdJ (one of my earliest disappointments with the jury's selection!), and I replayed it just recently to re-examine my opinion about the game. In fact, it can be played online at BGA, which seems odd for a game that relies on its physicality and "toy factor" as much as it does. Still, the actual strategy in the game remains intact in the format, since the unpredictability of the fork in the river may not be so unpredictable after all. What do you think of Niagara?    We don't just talk about the winner, though. Back in those days, the SdJ jury announced four other "nominated" games that could've won the award, and several more "recommended" games. For me, I think the game I'd want as the winner resides in the nominated list, while Jonathan singles out some standouts from the recommended list. Other titles nominated for the SdJ: Verflixxt! (That's Life), Around the World in 80 Days, Jambo, and Himalaya (Lords of Xidit)     Other titles recommended by the SdJ jury: Boomtown, Tanz der Hornochsen (Dance of Ibexes), The Gardens of the Alhambra, Diamant (Incan Gold), Geschenkt! (No Thanks), Piranha Pedro, Typo, and Wie ich die Welt sehe…         We also talk about two other major German game awards, the Deutscher Spielpreis, and the A La Carte. They are both ranked list. The former is (sort of) for heavier, gamer-games, while the latter is for card games (or “board”games done with cards). The timing of these awards is slightly off from the SdJ, so depending on publication dates a game might show up in one year's list for one award, and the following year for another award. Gemeinsam mit Chris Graeff und Stephan Hanf orakele ich über die Nominierungen und Preisvergabe zum diesjährigen Preis "Spiel des Jahres 2025"

Die Münchner Staatsbibliothek oder die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in Berlin haben den staatlichen Auftrag, Bücher und andere Druckwerke zu sammeln. Brettspiele aber sammeln sie nicht. Tom Werneck sieht das als schweren Fehler und Versäumnis. Denn Spiele wie „Mensch ärgere Dich nicht“, „Malefiz“ oder „Siedler von Catan“ gehörten zum deutschen Kulturgut. Vor knapp 30 Jahren hat er auf Grundlage seiner eigenen Spielesammlung mit Gleichgesinnten in Haar das Bayerische Spielearchiv gegründet. Mehr als 20 000 Schachteln türmen sich dort an drei verschiedenen Orten - und jährlich werden es mehr. Der Jurist und Industriemanager hat das Prädikat „Spiel des Jahres“ mitinitiiert. Im Podcast erzählt er, welche Kriterien für die Jury ausschlaggebend sind und wie sich die Auszeichnung auf die Arbeitsweise der Verlage ausgewirkt hat. Werneck kann auf ein bewegtes Leben zurückblicken, in dem Spielen einen wichtigen Stellwert hatte, aber nicht schon in der Kindheit. Und am Ende des Gesprächs verrät er, welche Spiele er besonders gerne mag.

In dieser Reihe empfehle ich jeden Sonntag ein Spiel, das prima für den Nachmittag mit der Familie oder im Freundeskreis geeignet ist...

Und das alles für das Einstellen der Server nach nur elf Tagen - autsch, das tut weh!Damit nicht genug kündigte Sony nun die PS5 Pro an. Zur Aufnahmezeit des Podcast stand das jedoch noch nicht fest, daher beratschlagt unser Team, was denn die Vorzüge der neuen Konsole sein könnten und für wen die bessere Variante in Frage kommt. In addition to its decades-long strong & beneficial effect on our boardgaming hobby, these awards are a better predictor for me than any other. Predictor of what? Of the games I'll actually continue to own and play with family & friends. True, they skew more toward lighter games, but that's ok with family. And truthfully, that's the preference of myself and several of my longtime gaming friends, too. If you only know the SdJ from recent years when it homed-in on the lightest games, more about parties than strategy, then I'd forgive your feeling that these aren't an award process that means much to a hobbyist. I'm thinking of recent winners like Just One, Pictures, MicroMacro Crime City, and even Dorfromantik. However, while you may long for the days when the award was bestowed on more gamer-ish titles like Tikal, Torres, and El Grande, my own personal highlights are the titles in between those two groupings. I'm thinking of Catan, Thurn und Taxis, Carcassonne, Dominion, Hanabi, Dominion, Ticket to Ride, or Alhambra. Not only the winners, too--I've learned to pay attention to the other nominees and recommended list of games, too. Just last weekend my friends Davebo and Jeff were visiting. Along with some other local gamers we played a lot of great titles, but guess what was on the table, pulled from my collection: Luxor and Imhotep, two fantastic nominees that were merely overshadowed by the steamroller winners those years (Azul and Codenames, respectively). The titles nominated for Spiel des Jahres are Captain Flip, In the Footsteps of Darwin, and Sky Team. In addition to these nominations, the SdJ jury recommended the following six titles: Harmonies, Passt nicht!, Phantom Ink, Schätz it if you can, Trekking Through History, and Trio.    Then for the Kenners the nominees went to Daybreak, The Guild of Merchant Explorers, and Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West. Plus the recommended list: Bier Pioniere, Botanicus, Forest Shuffle, and Ritual.    I think it's July 21 when we'll hear which games are the ultimate winners, but do take a look at the other nominees and recommended games. There's a good chance you'll enjoy those games, too, maybe even more than the winner. -Mark
