If you, like many of us, are struggling to find things to be grateful for this Thanksgiving, I have put together an episode featuring a national (and international) treasure, the exquisite soprano Roberta Alexander. In fact, I could just as easily have entitled this episode “Giving Thanks FOR Roberta Alexander.” Roberta has been featured many times on the podcast and I'm thrilled to bring her to you yet again in a refurbished bonus episode from the summer of 2023. Three works are foregrounded: first is Samuel Barber's dramatic scena Andromache's Farewell, which was composed for Martina Arroyo for the inaugural season of the New York Philharmonic at its new home at Lincoln Center. The recording featuring Roberta and conductor Edo de Waart is from the year 1993. There follows a complete performance (one of the finest in my experience) of Aaron Copland's song cycle Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson, his most extended solo vocal work, heard in a 1990 recording with British pianist Roger Vignoles. And finally, the crowning jewel: a live performance of Roberta Alexander in her youthful prime singing Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs. To my ear, this represents the perfect meeting of composer and artist, a near-ideal rendition of these songs, and one which is not readily available anywhere else on the interwebs. This episode is further interspersed with jewels from Roberta's 1985 recording of songs by Leonard Bernstein, all of which are exquisitely (as well as sometimes painfully) appropriate at this moment in the history of the United States and provide us with food for thought as we observe with solemnity this iconic holiday. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Posting a few days early in celebration of the Fourth of July and in further recognition of the beloved American soprano Roberta Alexander, whose birthday we celebrated on Countermelody last March. Ms. Alexander has made a number of exquisite recordings over the years, many of them for the small Dutch label Etcetera. Many of these releases feature songs by the greatest American composers: Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Samuel Barber, as well as two releases featuring light classical and Broadway songs. The recordings range in date from 1976 (a live performance of Ives at the Holland Festival, in honor of the American Bicentennial) through 2009 (a live performance of Roberta as Maria in Porgy and Bess conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt). We also hear material by Berlin, Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Alec Wilder, Bock and Harnick, John Jacob Niles, and Tom Lehrer, accompanied by pianists Reinbert de Leeuw, Roger Vignoles, Alfred Heller, Brian Masuda, Tan Crone, and David Triestram and conductors Kees Bakels and Edo de Waart. Throughout, Roberta Alexander's approach to this material is perfectly on target, revealing both pathos and a crackling sense of (often sardonic) humor, all grounded in a love of the music of her native country and wrapped in a red, white, and blue bow. Verbier Festival Gold's first release of 2023 is based on the concept of storytelling, a theme that is central to many of the festival's performances. This offering pairs two tantalizing performances from the very first summers of the organization's history. First, Peter Ustinov narrates Jean de Brunhoff's iconic tale "L'Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant". Charming piano accompaniment by Poulenc, played by Roger Vignoles, serves as a backdrop to the text. Second, world-renowned soprano Barbara Hendricks is joined by Carmina Quartet for a stunning rendition of Fauré's “La Bonne Chanson”. Today I am talking to Maite Aguirre, a Spanish pianist, conductor and music teacher who has made a shift into the world of law. Maite is now halfway through her studies, and she shares what music has meant to her, how her work as a musician has influenced her decision to make a career change and what her future looks like as a lawyer. After a career in the music industry spanning over a decade, Maite is now a Future Trainee Solicitor at the international law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP). She currently combines her Graduate Diploma in Law studies, with her work as piano teacher at St Paul's Cathedral School as well as completing her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Sir Barry Ife at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Initially trained as a pianist in Barcelona under Vladislav Bronevetzky and Alan Branch, Maite moved to London to complete her Master's in piano accompaniment at the Guildhall, where she also undertook a postgraduate course in opera studies. Subsequently, Maite became a Lucille Graham Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music working as repetiteur and conductor in the School's opera department. Other operatic experience includes a collaboration with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Grange Park Opera. As a pianist, Maite toured all over Spain, in France, Germany, Italy and Norway, and played in some of the most prestigious London venues including King's Place, Wigmore Hall, St John's Smith Square, St Martin's in the Fields and the Barbican Hall; also recording both for TV and radio: BBC3, RNE (Spanish National Radio) and Spanish TV channels TV3 and BTV; performing in UK festivals such as City of London, Ludlow Festival, Bramley Music Festival, Landsdowne-Blüthner. Maite was awarded many prizes during her career, including the Tracey Chadwell Memorial Prize to the best piano accompanist adjudicated by Roger Vignoles, and a second prize at the Concerto Competition in Budapest in 2016. She was also a Georg Solti Academia scholar, and features conducting in the BBC documentary Solti, Maestro or Mephisto. She was the Director of the Music Academy Cañada Blanch in the Spanish School in London for six years and remains the conductor of the BCLP Choir. Praised by The Guardian for her quasi orchestral colour in her playing, her first solo Album with music from Enrique Granados received unanimous praise from the media, highlighting her carefully thought textures and well balanced cantabile; impeccable pedalization, use of staccato, characteristic of the Spanish pianistic School as well as her faithfulness to the composer's characteristic sound and her colour and rubato, in the fingertips themselves. Shortly after the release of her second album in 2019, Une sorirée dans Grenade, Maite decided to pursue a career in law, and is the recipient of two scholarships on academic merit at BPP Law School (Career Commitment Scholarship and Dean of the Law). Keen on outreach projects and engagement, Maite has been invited as a panellist in several university events and law fairs and is a mentor at BCLP's Career Kick Start Alumni programme.
