Today's poem is about (not) getting the last word. Happy reading.Walter de la Mare, born on April 25, 1873 in London, is considered one of modern literature's chief exemplars of the romantic imagination. His complete works form a sustained treatment of romantic themes: dreams, death, rare states of mind and emotion, fantasy worlds of childhood, and the pursuit of the transcendent. As a youth he attended St. Paul's Cathedral School, and his formal education did not extend beyond this point. Upon graduation he went to work for the Anglo-American (Standard) Oil Company, remaining with the firm for 18 years. De la Mare began writing short stories and poetry while working as a bookkeeper in the company's London office during the 1890s. His first published short story, “Kismet,” appeared in the journal Sketch in 1895. In 1902 he published his first major work, the poetry collection Songs of Childhood, which was recognized as a significant example of children's literature for its creative imagery and variety of meters. Critics often assert that a childlike richness of imagination influenced everything de la Mare wrote, emphasizing his frequent depiction of childhood as a time of intuition, deep emotion, and closeness to spiritual truth. In 1908, following the publication of his novel Henry Brocken and the poetry collection titled Poems, de la Mare was granted a Civil List pension, enabling him to terminate his corporate employment and focus exclusively on writing.….As a poet de la Mare is often compared with Thomas Hardy and William Blake for their respective themes of mortality and visionary illumination. His greatest concern was the creation of a dreamlike tone implying a tangible but nonspecific transcendent reality. This characteristic of the poems has drawn many admirers, though also eliciting criticism that the poet indulged in an undefined sense of mystery without systematic acceptance of any specific doctrine. Some commentators also criticize the poetry for having an archness of tone more suitable for children's verse, while others value this playful quality. It is generally agreed, however, that de la Mare was a skillful manipulator of poetic structure, a skill that is particularly evident in the earlier collections.….For his extravagance of invention de la Mare is sometimes labeled an escapist who retreats from accepted definitions of reality and the relationships of conventional existence. His approach to reality, however, is not escapist; rather, it profoundly explores the world he considered most significant—that of the imagination. In the London Mercury J.B. Priestley favorably concluded in 1924 that de la Mare is “one of that most lovable order of artists who never lose sight of their childhood, but re-live it continually in their work and contrive to find expression for their maturity in it, memories and impressions, its romantic vision of the world.”-bio via Poetry Foundation This is a public episode. Warning: This episode speaks of violence and suicide. Please take care when listening.  Last week 21 year old Lilie James was killed in a Sydney private school, her body found in the bathroom of the school's gym. Her killer is suspected to be 24 year old Paul Thijssen, a man she had dated.  This week the former headmaster of St Andrew's Cathedral School, where Lilie was a teacher and was killed, wrote a letter home to parents and students where he called Thijssen a "delight", "a fine student" and even a "role-model".  Too often we see and hear things like this said by men about men in their lives who have gone on to do unspeakable things to either their wives and partners, or their own children.  In this episode of The Quicky, we take a look at the 'Good Bloke Syndrome' and why it's time some men held a mirror up to their own behaviours to understand what is happening to the women of Australia.  To read more on this topic, click here. “Those who trust in [the Lord] will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love…” (Wisdom 3).   Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA 2D77                                         All Souls / All Faithful Departed (LFF 2022) Evensong 50    Thursday 2 November 2023 Bishop Candidates Visit      Wisdom 3:1-9 Psalm 130 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 John 5:24-27 At the Bishop's Ranch for my first clergy retreat I remember the late afternoon heat and that September smell of dust, chaparral and Bay Tree (with a hint of campfire smoke). I knew hardly anyone there as I walked up the Ranch House driveway. The first person to greet me was sixty-eight year old David Forbes. He was fit and trim, wearing a t-shirt and short cut-off jeans. He called me by name. He knew that I had graduated from Cal, that I played rugby there and that we were the national champions. In those days everyone confused me for Bruce O'Neill and for what seems like years David was the only senior clergy person other than the bishop who actually knew my name. David had grown up in San Francisco. He served here for years as we finished constructing this building's four walls and as the modern cathedral came into being. David was involved in building the back half of the Cathedral, installing the human endeavor windows in the clerestory, the East lancet windows and the rose window. He was intimately involved in choosing vestments that we still use, making this granite and redwood altar at the center of the crossing, the governance structures of the cathedral and even the design of our worship services. It was his idea to engrave on our pulpit “In the Beginning” in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. David founded the Cathedral School for Boys (1961) and St. Paul's School in Oakland (1965), and later the National Association of Episcopal Schools. He helped me a great deal twenty years ago when our church started our own school in the South Bay. When I joined Grace Cathedral, David served as a chaplain to our staff and especially to me. The two of us would have monthly lunches on Polk Street. Sometimes we would drive around town and he would describe his childhood memories of different neighborhoods. Although David died in April 2022, I think of him nearly every day when I bike past the restaurant where we used to talk. As we celebrate All Souls Day together we remember the people who have died but who seem almost tangibly near to us. David was the most youthful person in his nineties who you will ever meet. He loved new beginnings. He was always oriented toward the future and cared passionately about the Cathedral. I want to talk briefly about the message David would share with us. We served together on the board for the Cathedral School for Boys almost to his death. David was active on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion taskforce. For him the purpose of the school is to give students from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance. As a gay man and a passionate advocate for justice David would be alarmed by our national politics. He would insist that Grace Cathedral more eloquently speak out on behalf of the dignity of all LGBTQ+ people. Today we are not just celebrating All Souls Day, we are also welcoming our three candidates (with their spouses) who will be in the election for a new bishop on December 2. You may be wondering what David would have to say more specifically in this setting. And I would be too if it were not for a surprise gift I received. A month ago the Postal Service delivered to my office an old weathered manila envelope with David's handwriting on the outside. David didn't use notes when he preached, but this folder contained five typewritten manuscripts for sermons preached at Grace Cathedral in the 1950's. It also included a stole that his daughter said was given to him by his parents at his ordination here at Grace Cathedral. The first sentence of his sermon on February 2nd 1958 begins with these words. “Churchmen throughout our Diocese will all testify, I believe, that the topic of the moment is the coming election of the Bishop, who… will succeed Bishop Block.” [1] The whole sermon is about the 1958 bishop election! Let me share with you three things I especially noticed. First, the sermon addresses a pervasive sense of worry in the Diocese. Up until that point there had only been four diocesan bishops in the history of the whole diocese. In previous cases the new bishop had for all practical purposes been chosen before the balloting. To make matters worse the newspapers were carrying quotes from different candidates. David uses words like perplexity, confusion, disillusionment, smear, inuendo. And phrases like, “battle royale,” and, “less than Christian tactics.” Reading the sermon made me feel so grateful for the civility and graciousness that I have been experiencing through our process. Second, the sermon points out just what high expectations we have for bishops. A bishop must have the “purest and noblest motives” and spend much time in prayer. The bishop should have the tongue of Chrysostom to stir people to action. The bishop should have color and personality to show the relevance and power of the gospel. This person should have breadth of vision to solve vexing problems and be a capable administrator in managing a “financial empire.” David points out that of course the clergy above all want a sympathetic and discerning pastor. In my experience I do not think this has changed. We still want to be seen for who we are and helped when we feel defeated. Finally, after considering who we are looking for, David asks us to look at ourselves, that is the ones who are doing the looking. He reminds us that we are fallible and sinful people, that we are liable to error and then to persist in it. The church forgives us from sin but cannot completely stop us from sinning. For this reason we have to depend on the Holy Spirit. “Those who trust in [the Lord] will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love…” (Wisdom 3). On this day when we remember friends and family members who we love and who have died, I pray that their words will come easily to you, if not by postal service as in my case, then through the theater of your memory. I pray that they will feel so tangibly near that you will hear them call you by name. No one knows for sure what happens when you die. But when I think of seeing David again I always imagine the two of us greeting each other at the Ranch House, walking down the grape arbor to the swimming pool on a warm fall day. There is so much that I would want to share with him. His childlike embrace of new beginnings would make him love what we are doing today. He would want to know all about our candidates for bishop and the upcoming election. He would laugh at how much and how little has changed. David finishes that sermon from 1958 with these words, “God does have a purpose for this diocese. It is a simple one, although its execution is not so easy. The purpose is to have us grow in zeal and effectiveness, witness powerfully to the love of God for all [people]… Yes, God is with us now and will be with us at Convention… let us ask that He guide us to a knowledge of His will and that he give us the courage to stand for it. May God grant us wisdom and understanding, faithfulness and charity.” [1] David Forbes, “Sermon Preached in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, February 2, 1958 (Prior to the Election of the Bishop Coadjutor).”

When introducing a new initiative in a school setting it's always an advantage to have ‘buy-in' from a number of colleagues right from the start. You could claim there is safety in numbers, be encouraged that we're all in this together, or rely on the fact that a crowd draws a crowd. However, it's not always the case, so when you're the only advocate for starting a coaching culture in your school what do you do? – You Start With One. Join me in this episode where I'm in conversation with Elle Smyth. Elle is the senior learning coach at St Andrew's Cathedral School in Sydney, Australia and has a fascinating story to share about how coaching has grown and flourished there over the last seven years since ‘starting with one' back in 2015.

In the latest episode of The Parenting Couch podcast, Rachel and Sarah talk to Phillip Heath, Head of Barker College, about how to choose a school for your child and why Barker made the transition to fully co-educational in 2022.Choosing a school for your child is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a parent. There are many factors to consider… practical considerations like how close it is to where you live, public transport options, cost, where friends might be going, and before & after school care. There are also school factors to consider – the size of the school, facilities, religious affiliation, teaching philosophy, academic results, their approach to behaviour management, support for children with additional needs. You'll also be wanting to consider how different schools might suit children's personalities, strengths, needs and interests.Another thing to think about is whether you choose a co-educational or a single sex school. For some, this can be one of the most important factors.Phillip Heath achieved a First Class Honours degree in Reformation History and taught at Trinity Grammar School Sydney and King's School Ely (UK), before becoming Deputy Head of The William Clarke College in Kellyville, and then Headmaster of St Andrew's Cathedral School, Sydney, where he formed the Gawura Campus for Indigenous inner city children. Author of “Trinity, the Daring of Your Name”, and numerous journal articles, Mr Heath became fifth Principal of Radford College ACT in 2009 and the school received the Order of Australia Association (ACT) Award for Community Service twice under his leadership. He was made a Fellow of the ACT Branch ACEL in 2011 and in 2018 was awarded as a Member in the general division of the Order of Australia for his service to education and his commitment to creating greater opportunities for Indigenous students. He was appointed as the Head of Barker College in 2014. In 2016 it was announced that the School would transition to be fully coeducational by 2022 with female students commencing in Years Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten in 2018, Year 3 in 2019 and Year 7 in 2020. In 2016 he formed the Darkinjung Barker Campus for Indigenous children on the Central Coast of New South Wales and in 2020 the Ngarralingayil Barker Campus for Indigenous children in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. In 2021, following the signing of an MOU with the Yothu Yindi Foundation, Dhupuma Barker commenced as a school for Indigenous children On Country in North East Arnhem Land.Phillip has served on the NSW Board of Studies representing the Independent Sector (2000-2009) and is also a past National Chair of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (2013-2015). He is currently working on an unpublished manuscript titled “One Life at a Time”, exploring his journey and work to create greater educational opportunities for Australia's First Nations people.#theparentingcouch #theparentingcouchpodcast #parenting #northshoremums

In the same way that you spoke unto the dust of the ground when you created humankind in your own image, we ask you to send forth your healing power into Archer's body. Send forth your word and command every cell, electrical and chemical impulse, tissue, joint, ligament, organ, gland, muscle, bone and every molecule in his body to come under complete and perfect health, strength, alignment, balance and harmony. It is through you that Archer lives and moves and has being. With every breath he takes, he lives under your life-giving grace.  We ask you to touch Archer now with the same miracle-working power that you used when you fashioned him inside his mother's womb. As surely as you have created him in your image and likeness, you can also recreate him now and restore his complete health. Please fill Archer with your healing power. Cast out all that should not be inside of him. We ask you to mend all that is broken, root out every sickness and disease, open all blocked arteries and veins, restore his internal organs, rebuild his damaged tissues, remove all inflammation and cleanse him of all infections, viruses and destructive forms of bacteria. Let the warmth of your healing love flood his entire being, so that his body will function the way it was created to be, whole and complete, renewed in your perfect health. We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. It’s not that we aren’t appreciative of the offer of help from others, but sometimes you just want to scream, “STOP ASKING ME QUESTIONS!” What about the innocent question, “Is there anything I can do to help?” and similar questions when we or our loved one is in an intensive care unit, or in the throws of early trauma. Caring people don’t realize the stress that chit-chat big everyday questions add. What is demanding and what is not? And Louise looks harder at the, “Oh, it’s a blessing” reply when a loved one who was suffering dies, no matter how old. Intended to be consoling, but is it? Many of these words fall under the heading, “What not to text.” Louise explores the kind of texts that are soothing to someone in trauma, and she begins an unfolding explanation of how we can understand trauma more fully. Join Louise for this episode of Blink of an Eye: Episode 14 Soothing Texts -- What (Not) to TextAugust 7. She currently combines her Graduate Diploma in Law studies, with her work as piano teacher at St Paul's Cathedral School as well as completing her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Sir Barry Ife at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Initially trained as a pianist in Barcelona under Vladislav Bronevetzky and Alan Branch, Maite moved to London to complete her Master's in piano accompaniment at the Guildhall, where she also undertook a postgraduate course in opera studies. Subsequently, Maite became a Lucille Graham Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music working as repetiteur and conductor in the School's opera department. Other operatic experience includes a collaboration with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Grange Park Opera. As a pianist, Maite toured all over Spain, in France, Germany, Italy and Norway, and played in some of the most prestigious London venues including King's Place, Wigmore Hall, St John's Smith Square, St Martin's in the Fields and the Barbican Hall; also recording both for TV and radio: BBC3, RNE (Spanish National Radio) and Spanish TV channels TV3 and BTV; performing in UK festivals such as City of London, Ludlow Festival, Bramley Music Festival, Landsdowne-Blüthner.  Maite was awarded many prizes during her career, including the Tracey Chadwell Memorial Prize to the best piano accompanist adjudicated by Roger Vignoles, and a second prize at the Concerto Competition in Budapest in 2016. She was also a Georg Solti Academia scholar, and features conducting in the BBC documentary Solti, Maestro or Mephisto. She was the Director of the Music Academy Cañada Blanch in the Spanish School in London for six years and remains the conductor of the BCLP Choir. Praised by The Guardian for her quasi orchestral colour in her playing, her first solo Album with music from Enrique Granados received unanimous praise from the media, highlighting her carefully thought textures and well balanced cantabile; impeccable pedalization, use of staccato, characteristic of the Spanish pianistic School as well as her faithfulness to the composer's characteristic sound and her colour and rubato, in the fingertips themselves. Shortly after the release of her second album in 2019, Une sorirée dans Grenade, Maite decided to pursue a career in law, and is the recipient of two scholarships on academic merit at BPP Law School (Career Commitment Scholarship and Dean of the Law). Keen on outreach projects and engagement, Maite has been invited as a panellist in several university events and law fairs and is a mentor at BCLP's Career Kick Start Alumni programme. Instagram: @maite_piano

Inara describes herself as a bisexual, polyamorous, eclectic pagan. A teacher and lifelong practitioner of yoga, she follows a path of finding enlightenment by healing the mind-body-spirit split that occurs in Western society. Ecstatic dance, drumming, sex, yoga, ritual, energy manipulation and healing, research and reflection are the avenues Inara uses and encourages for spiritual expression and development. Inara runs an online discussion group on sacred sexuality and offers workshops and classes on yoga, breath work, sacred sexuality, teenage sex education, menstruation reclamation, and Native American drumming/singing. She has been a guest instructor for the Indigo Village Summer Camp, and a guest lecturer at the University of Redlands in California and at St. Patrick’s Cathedral School in Pennsylvania. Additionally, she has performed private yoga demonstrations for select audiences around the country. Inara is a published author, with articles and poetry appearing in The Common People magazine, Atlanta Rising magazine and the Carolina Spirit Quest newsletter. Inara organizes the Village of Greenwood at Dreaming. She also coordinated the Adult Play area at FireDance 2004 and DayDreaming: Greenwood, a day-long sacred sex intensive. Most recently, Inara presented a three course seminar on sacred sexuality at Bio-Buzz in Albany, GA. She created the Temple of the Red Lotus as an organization devoted to promoting and practicing sacred sexuality and the Qadishtu path.
