These days I find myself in a pensive, troubled state, very much in need of the kind of consolation that only music can provide. A number of years ago, I published a pair of episodes featuring the sublime Margaret Price performing music of mourning and consolation. Today's episode presents an expanded and refurbished version of the second of those episodes, in a program composed entirely of art song, moving through a sequence of emotions surrounding loss. Composers include Johannes Brahms, Giuseppe Verdi, Robert Schumann, Enrique Granados, Franz Schubert, Grace Williams, Sergei Rachmaninov, Felix Mendelssohn, Philip Cannon, Hugo Wolf, Alban Berg, Maurice Ravel, Franz Liszt, Peter Cornelius, and Richard Strauss, and collaborating pianists and conductors include Claudio Abbado, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Cyprien Katsaris, Geoffrey Parsons, and Neville Marriner, as well as frequent collaborators James Lockhart and Thomas Dewey. A thorough traversal of the song repertoire by one of the supreme recitalists of the late 20th Century. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.
The legacy of choral singing is never more cherished than during the holiday season, when it brings warmth and light to the winter darkness by opening the heart and feeding the soul. From the Christian churches and cathedrals of Europe and the U.S., to the Orthodox churches of Russia, central Asia, and the Holy Land, the human family gathers to listen, sing, and worship together. After more than ten centuries of evolution, some of the finest choral music was written during the last 100 years by a special breed of contemporary composers, who respect and extend the tradition. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another compilation of sublime choral pieces from our longtime guest producer ELLEN HOLMES called "TO THEE WE SING." Music is by the cream of liturgical composers from Russia, Estonia, Bulgaria and the U.S., including SERGEI RACHMANINOV, ARCHBISHOP IONAFAN, DOBRI CHRISTOV, MORTEN LAURIDSEN, and others. At the start of the 20th century, Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov was at his lowest point. His first symphony was a disaster and he believed he would amount to nothing in the world of music. But through the help of therapy, hypnosis, and self-perseverance, he pulled through and made some of the best classical pieces of the century. Over a hundred years later, Broadway genius Dave Malloy made a musical about that period of time. How does it hold up? Lets find out with "Preludes"!

Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... Exodus 4 10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. 11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. 13 And he (Moses) said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send. 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and HE said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.
Kate Molleson marks the 150 anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninov's birth. She visits his home in Switzerland - after years of renovation, the beautiful Villa Senar, on the banks of Lake Lucerne, is reopening to the public. This is the peaceful summer residence where Rachmaninov lived in in the 1930s and where he composed the Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini and the Third symphony. Kate is shown around the Villa by its director Andrea Loetscher. They are joined by pianist Boris Giltburg, who is about to release his new Rachmaninov piano concertos disc, and who performs specially for Music Matters on Rachmaninov's original Steinway grand piano in the Villa's studio. Also joining Kate at the Villa is Fiona Maddocks: music critic and author of the upcoming book 'Goodbye Russia: Rachmaninoff in Exile'. Together they discuss Rachmaninov's life, work and his time spent at Villa Senar.
150 years ago this week, Sergei Rachmaninov was born: one of the finest pianists of his generation, touring the world in the 1920s and 30s as a musical megastar. Composing had been his real passion since childhood, and towards the end of his time in Russia before the Revolution, it was farming. Though St Petersburg and then Moscow was his base for much of his early life, it was Ivanovka – a country estate deep in the Russian countryside - that formed him. The house and the land surrounding it were a major source of his creative inspiration until his last visit in 1917. Donald Macleod explores how important Ivanovka was to Rachmaninov, and how he carried the precious memory of it with him when he left it behind for a life of exile.

This week we're marking the first anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022. Roy Jenkins explores some of the religious elements involved in this conflict. Many argue that Russia's President Putin has been using religion to justify his so-called special military operation. The largest religious tradition in both Russia and Ukraine is the Orthodox Church with years of history stretching back to 988 AD. Officially there are 15 Orthodox churches worldwide, along with a dozen others whose status is said to be uncertain. It's Patriarch Kirill who leads the Moscow Patriarchate. He's spoken in support of Russia's so-called special military operation; a stance which has led Pope Francis to refer to him as “Putin's altar boy”. We hear about him and ask just how much religious liberty there is for worshippers in Russia. Meanwhile in Ukraine where there is considerable religious diversity, we hear about the friction between the pro-Moscow Orthodox and independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine. We also hear about the humanitarian and pastoral work in the country. We also ask - what of the future? Our guests: Dr Geraldine Fagan: Editor of the journal East-West Church Report and a practising member of the Orthodox Church. www.eastwestreport.org Dr Joshua Searle of Spurgeon's College in London and a trustee of the Dnipro Hope Mission in Ukraine. www.dniprohopemission.org Jonathan Luxmoore is freelance journalist based in the UK and Poland specialising in religious news throughout Europe. He writes (among others) for the Church Times and The Tablet. Music: Extracts from the Vespers Op 37 by Sergei Rachmaninov. Extract from Prayer for Ukraine by Valentin Silvestrov.
In a program celebrating the 150th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninov's birth, Lahav Shani conducts the composer's Symphonic Dances, which marries diabolical, jazzy melodies with plush, old-world grandeur. Italian pianist Beatrice Rana is soloist in Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody, a set of 24 variations that crackle with wit and furious energy. Prokofiev's delightful Classical Symphony opens the program. Explore the music in the free preconcert conversation featuring Kyle Dzapo in Orchestra Hall 75 minutes before the performance. The conversation will last approximately 30 minutes. No additional tickets are needed. Learn more: cso.org/performances/22-23/cso-classical/shani-conducts-rachmaninov-symphonic-dances
Le succès de "All By Myself" fut planétaire.

RFI Planète Radio is sponsoring a video contest, and we want you to enter. The deadline is tomorrow, 1 May – so get your video in today! Planète Radio is an RFI department that reaches out to remote populations around the world. For the fourth consecutive year, Planète Radio is holding a video competition on environmental issues. The theme of this year's competition is “Show how they feel”: You are to create a 3-minute video about climate change, the environment, pollution - told by the people it affects. Here's what Planète Radio says about the competition: “Environmental deterioration, climate change, pollution, everybody's talking about it. But amid articles, figures, and expert reports, what do we really know about the feelings of the people already impacted? The video clips produced by the ePOP community in more than 50 countries allow us to hear from those who never ask for anything yet have seen it all - those who are already living with these changes that deteriorate their quality of life.” Your project can be intergenerational: Get together with your grandfather, your aunt, someone older in your community and ask them how they feel about what is happening to their surroundings or to the place where they grew up. RFI's ePOP video awards shine a light on Africa's environmental crises Your project can also be about how you, or people your age, feel about climate change, given that your future will be affected by this phenomenon. Gather the words of those around you who are confronting the environmental crisis in their daily lives, investing, researching, and questioning the urgency of deploying solutions to face it. Prizes for this year's competition include equipment grants from 1,000 to 4,500 euros, as well as ePOP promotion kits and other goodies. For competition guidelines and more information about the four different categories you can enter, click here. You can also write to us at english.service@rfi.fr if you need more help. We're very proud that the winner in the ePOP 2020 RFI Club category went to an English language club – Adita Prithika's RFI Agnichiragu Phoenix Club in Tamil Nadu, India. Be sure you include your RFI Listeners Club membership number (most of them begin with an A, followed by a number) in the questionnaire, or I will have to click “Decline”, which I don't like to do! This week's quiz: On 19 March, I asked you a question about Ukraine – specifically, about the Russians against the war. Earlier that week you listened to and read Jan van der Made's excellent article “Who are the Russians campaigning to stop Putin and help Ukraine?” Jan's interview was with Sergei Guriev, the founder of the True Russia Collective. I asked you about Mikhail Baryshnikov, a member of the collective. You were to do a bit of research on him, and tell me who he is, a bit of his story, his history. The answer is: Mikhail Baryshnikov was the preeminent ballet dancer in the '70s & '80s. Born in 1948 in Soviet-controlled Latvia, he was a member of the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, and made international headlines in 1974 while on tour with the Kirov in Canada, when he escaped his minders. All traveling Soviet artists were limited in their movements for exactly that reason: fear they would defect to the west. He was granted political asylum by the Canadian government. Baryshnikov then moved to the US and joined the American Ballet Theatre, then the New York City Ballet so that he could learn modern classical dance, which was not known in the Soviet Union. Baryshnikov then returned to the American Ballet Theatre, where he was Principal Dancer and later, Artistic Director. He has done some films, too. You know, sometimes it's good to be old – I got to see him dance. It was perfection. The winners are: Jobayada Aktar Jai, who's a member of the Nilshagor RFI Fan Club in Nilphamari, Bangladesh. There are two RFI Listeners Club members who won this week: Radhakrishna Pillai from Kerala State in India, and Kanwar Sandhu from British Columbia in Canada. Rounding out the list are two RFI English listeners from Bangladesh: Tasmaul Housna Akhi from Naogaon, and Lutfor Rahaman from Bogura, who noted he is ill and asks for your healing thoughts. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “New York New York” by John Kander and Fred Ebb, performed by the Instrumental Big Band Orchestra; an excerpt from Sergei Rachmaninov's “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini”; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “I'm Gonna' Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” by Fats Waller, played by Stephanie Trick, and “Cantaloupe Island” by Herbie Hancock, performed by Hancock on the piano, Freddie Hubbard on the cornet, bassist Ron Carter, and Tony Williams on the drums. Do you have a musical request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr This week's question ... You have to listen to the show to participate. After you've listened to the show, refer to Amanda Morrow's article to help you with the answers. You have until 23 May to enter this week's quiz; the winners will be announced on the 28 May podcast. Pianist Lucy Parham picks through the greatest recordings of Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Sonata. Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 36, in B-flat minor was composed in 1913 and revised it in 1931. Three years after his third piano concerto was finished, he moved with his family to Rome and started working on his second piano sonata. It is a mighty but technically challenging piece. Rachmaninov himself was not satisfied with the work and revised it in 1931. In 1940, the pianist Vladimir Horowitz created his own edition which combined elements of both previous versions.
"Muse" is the name of the debut recording by cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and his sister, pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. The siblings have recorded together before, in the 2020 release, "Carnival of the Animals", and have performed live many times. "Muse" includes two major 20th century cello sonatas, by Samuel Barber (1932); and Sergei Rachmaninov (1901), as well as shorter pieces by both composers. Sheku and Isata share the joys of performing as siblings (there is no rivalry, both say), and the challenges that have become all too familiar in these times. Hear the rest of the story in their conversation with All Classical Portland's Program Director John Pitman.

Helen Macdonald is a writer and naturalist who is best known as the author of H is for Hawk which won the 2014 Samuel Johnson Prize and the Costa Book Award, and topped the sales charts. The book chronicles her experiences training a goshawk called Mabel while grieving for her late father. Helen's father was a staff photographer at the Daily Mirror and her mother was a journalist on local newspapers. In 1975, when Helen was five, her parents bought a house in Terkel's Park, an estate owned by the Theosophical Society. It was here that Helen became a keen bird watcher and developed a love of the natural world, spending her days in fields and meadows where she collected specimens which she brought home to study. When she was 12 she helped out at a local falconry centre and trained her first hawk, a kestrel called Amy. After graduating from Cambridge she worked for the National Avian Research Centre in Wales before returning to academia. The death of her father in 2007 prompted Helen to buy Mabel and bring her home to live with her. Training Mabel was Helen's way of dealing with her grief during what she describes as a very dark period of her life. The relationship between her and Mabel became so intense that she says she became more hawk than human. Helen continues to write books and essays and present programmes about the natural world. She lives in Suffolk with two parrots she calls the Bugs. Law, classical music, and virtuosity have a lot in common. As a Steinway Artist and tax lawyer, Leonard Gilbert found great commonality succeeded in both worlds. By the age of 19, Leonard Gilbert won four Canadian Music Competitions, won the 2010 Canadian Chopin Competitions, and became the first Canadian to represent Canada at the prestigious International Chopin Competition, viewed by most pianists to be the “Olympics” and “Paralympics” of classical music competitions. In this episode, you'll hear a masterwork—Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor Op. 36, performed by 2018 Honens Semifinalist Stefano Andreatta. Rachmaninov composed his piano music for himself. He was an amazing virtuoso with a secret weapon ... enormous hands! With his fingers spread, his reach was 12 notes wide, or an octave and a half. Those big intervals are an extra challenge for other pianists learning his work. -Watch the video edition of this excerpt at honens.com/home.

Helen Fielding, writer and journalist, is best known for creating Bridget Jones, who first appeared in a newspaper column in the Independent in 1995, in the form of a diary detailing the single 30-something’s exploits in London as she tried to make sense of life and love. The column soon acquired a wider following, and Helen turned Bridget’s story into a best-selling book the following year. Born in 1958, Helen grew up in Yorkshire with an older sister and two younger brothers. Her father was a manager at the textile mill next door to where they lived. She read English at Oxford where she became friends with Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. After graduating, she became a BBC trainee, travelling to Africa for Comic Relief. She later made documentaries for Thames TV before moving into print journalism. To date, Helen has written four Bridget Jones novels, three of which have been turned into feature films starring Renée Zellweger. She spent a decade in Los Angeles at the start of the new millennium and had two children with Kevin Curran, who was a scriptwriter for The Simpsons. She now lives in London. Many of us have been missing live concerts and recitals, so it’s wonderful that the Henley Festival is producing a digital show. Corinna talks to one of the headliners, Hao Zi Yoh about her journey to becoming a concert pianist - from playing the Carnegie Hall aged 12, moving from Malaysia to Germany at 14 and finding freedom to practice different pieces during lockdown in London. Listen to Hao Zi perform the beautiful piano solo Liebesleid (Love’s Sorrow) recorded especially for Radio Gorgeous. This complex piece was originally written by Fritz Kreisler for violin but later transcribed by Sergei Rachmaninov. The Henley Festival Digital Edition (also featuring Beverley Knight; Will Young; Joe Stilgoe and Rory Bremner) took place on July 12 2020. www.henley-festival.co.uk (https://henley-festival.co.uk/) haozipiano (https://www.instagram.com/haozipiano/?hl=en) @henleyfestival (https://twitter.com/henleyfestival) @Corinna_Radio (https://twitter.com/Corinna_Radio) #music #piano #women #RadioGorgeous Image © Andreea Tufescu

Rachmaninov, 1 april 1873. The more we know about the needs and the evils in the world, the more we need to pray. But to do this effectively we don't necessarily need to know every detail. So I wrote this prayer-poem especially to encourage those who are eager to to pray about Brexit, and other 'wider' matters, but who hold back because they feel they are not very clear about all the details. One of the sources I had in mind when I came to write this prayer-poem was an episode from Sister Kirsty’s book, ‘The Choice,’ (p134-5) in which she tells of the effect it had on her when she spoke with a saintly old monk about the agony of spirit she so often felt in prayer, especially when she heard tales of cruelty to children. The monk surprised her greatly by withdrawing deep into his cowl and remaining silent for a long time. The advice he gave her wasn't in the least what she had been expecting: it was to stop reading newspapers and watching the news for a whole year. This shrewd and prayerful man knew that we do not necessary to be aware of every horrible detail of what is happening in the world in order to pray for it effectively. From deep within the depths of his cowl, he could bring it all to the Lord, confident that this would move His hand to act – rather as when I go on retreat I do so as it were with my friends and on behalf of those in special need of prayer. All of us can pray, ‘Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth – and in Britain – as it is in Heaven. I can repent for the abuse that is going on, the failure to adhere to God’s word. I can declare His Lordship over the earth and all that it contains – and so on. We don’t have to know and understand all the details to be able to pray in accordance with His will. His word teaches us how to pray. The reference I have made in this prayer to a 'template' concerns my long standing hope that as we pray for one specific person or situation, the Lord take these prayers and use them as a ‘template’ to minister to many others in similar situations. On a completely different level I was also inspired by two Old Irish poems. The first that describes the ideal abode of a hermit set apart to seek the Lord, while the second celebrates the close affinity between a hermit scholar and his cat, both remain intent on their work! I hope this very brief prayer poem will inspire you to carry your own petitions to the Lord where the words and music leave off . . . The ‘still-fully’ passionate music that accompanies this prayer-poem is Sergei Rachmaninov’s Great Ektenia. ‘Ektenia’ simply means Litany: that is, a series of petitions in the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine church. Soundcloud link here From deep within my cowl Hooded by Your hand, hidden deep within my cowl, travelling far in spirit from my regular routine ways, in prayer, O God, I seek to move Your hand. In the depths of my cowl I have no need to hear the full-blown tale of the awfulness that snares and befouls. This I trust, that in these heart-felt pleas, that stem from bended knees – You will discern the tenor of Your own petition for blocked and beleaguered souls. Offered on the altar of my heart, in the temple of my soul, make of these cries from one enclosed within, Incense that rises before Your throne,a wider template that tips the bowl to pour afar Your presence and Your aid.

Donald Macleod explores Sergei Rachmaninov’s years in America. Reluctant even to visit at first, and once there always more than a little homesick, this proudly Russian composer in fact lived in the United States of America for 25 years, from the end of the First World War until his death in 1943. His life there was principally that of a virtuoso performer, not a composer; and Rachmaninov gave recitals for presidents, recorded discs for Thomas Edison, and felt obliged to rattle off his “hated” Prelude in C sharp minor for concert audiences wherever he went. All this week, Donald looks at Rachmaninov’s equivocal relationship with his adopted homeland. Rachmaninov’s first toured the USA in 1909, but it was only when he fled the 1917 revolution that he had to properly adjust to life as a concert pianist there. His intense performing schedule left him exhausted – we hear about the year 1926, which dedicated solely to composition, and how he found productive solace during his in summers in Switzerland. Although Rachmaninov was slow to embrace his adopted country, never really learning proper English and always looking back longingly to mother Russia, he did come to love the United States, and eventually, in the final year of his life, became a citizen. By then he’d become immersed in American cultural life, relishing jazz music and even admiring Mickey Mouse’s take on his ubiquitous Prelude. Music featured: Prelude in C sharp minor Piano concerto in D minor, 1st movement The Isle of the Dead, Op 29 A Dream (6 Songs, Op 38 No 5) The Star-Spangled Banner for piano Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor, 1st movement Polichinelle in F sharp minor, Op 3 No 4 Lento a capriccio (The Bells) Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 in C sharp minor (Liszt, arr. Raymond Bisha introduces Boris Giltburg’s latest album of music by Sergei Rachmaninov that features the Études-tableaux Op. 33 and his ever-popular Piano Concerto No. 2. The latter charts a dramatic course: from the passion, darkness and pain of the first movement, through the dreamy idyll of the second, to the unequivocal victory of the finale. This overview might indeed reflect the path of Rachmaninov’s own life: his depression and inability to continue composing following the disastrous première of his First Symphony (ruined by an apparently drunken Glazunov on the conductor’s podium) and his fight to overcome it with the help of a hypnotherapist, one Dr Dahl, to whom the Second Piano Concerto was dedicated.

Among the reasons for compiling these songs are my Mom’s love of the sound of the piano, a serene atmosphere for my resting boy, and the soundtrack for my contemplation during the wee hours of the morning. When you DJ, your musical imagination is full of clever segues. When you love music, you’re never without songs. When you play music for people’s enjoyment, your mind is on how you’ll bring together everybody’s jams, create a vibe and move the crowd. Within crafty DJs, daydreaming in stereo is a constant. With all of that going on in your mind all of the time, and, let’s face it, music’s allure just won’t allow you to turn it off, you need Peace & Quiet. When listening to solo piano music, at last, I’m not thinking about the next mix. My mind relaxes into a mode of appreciation. Piano is an essential musical instrument, a root in the world of sound. Whether at home, the church, or singing America the Beautiful in public school, we’ve all accompanied the piano. The piano has always stuck with me. Over two years, I listened to approximately 1,800 solo piano performances amid the realms of Classical and Jazz music. I’ve loved Jazz since I was a teen, I used to listen to it while hauling lumber or doing landscaping because I never knew when the songs would end and that helped to pass the time quickly. Ten 6-minute long Jazz songs, that’s an hour. I had a tape, the soundtrack to a film called ‘Round Midnight, starring Dexter Gordon, which was with me on the bus, the El (Philadelphia's subway), alone in my room at home, Pop’s car, everywhere all the time and on auto reverse. This 1986 film won the Academy Award for Best Music and Original Score. Herbie Hancock on piano, Dexter Gordon on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, John McLaughlin on guitar, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Wayne Shorter on saxes, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Cedar Walton on piano, Billy Higgins on drums, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Bobby McFerrin on vocals. Curious about what represents a standard in Jazz as a beautifully human genre featuring master musicians? Commence your exploration with ‘Round Midnight. On that soundtrack, Herbie Hancock and Bobby Hutcherson’s "Minuit Aux Champs-Elysées" was the song that drew my focus toward the musician’s playing. Since only piano and vibes, it was easier to hear Herbie and Bobby’s playing, and I could hear, because I knew that they were improvising, what seemed to me as their brains in motion. Thinking in the present and future while playing at same time is very attractive to my ears. Your ideas begin in your mind, in your imagination, and they are uniquely yours – you unbridled. This combination of Jazz and Classical pianists juxtaposes easy going compositions played to form and played freely. Each pianist is legendary and the performances of standards and their own compositions are exquisite. Play quietly and enjoy the excursions into their minds and yours.
