The second part of the monthly new release series is generally dominated by the latest records Malibu Lou has put out on his legendary Rum Bar Records label. This month is no different, and it’s a perfect kick off to over two hours of great new tunes. The Hollywood Stars, The Amplifier Heads, Stop Calling Me Frank, Gene Champagne and Girl With a Hawk are this month’s Rum Bar representatives, and they’re all fabulous. There’s also a sampler of tunes from the lastest Dam-Nations compilation series. The rest of the show is a battle of sorts between veterans and noobs. On the veterans side, there’s great new music from the likes of Guided By Voices, Social Distortion, Dwarves, Die Toten Hosen (their final album!), Nashville Pussy, and the Real McKenziess. On the “noob” side, there are acts sucks as Irked, Taxi Girls, Cable TV, Hoaxxers, and so many more that once again proves there will always be great new rock and roll bands! What’s your favorite new album? For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

On last week’s new release episode I highlighted an entire section to the new album by The Sleeveens. This week I do the same thing to my good friends High On Stress, but instead of adding my own description of how great they are I’m going to leave it to the legendary Twin/Tone Records founder Peter Jesperson – “With album #6 – Still Here – Minneapolis band High On Stress deliver their finest work yet. Full of tightly written, smart songs that stick in your head. It rocks like mad, sounds great, and when it's over, I just want to play it again.” The High On Stress segment is just the tip of the iceberg for this month’s Rum Bar Records segment, as there’s another entire set of fantastic new rock and roll from that fabulous label. There’s also some tracks from the latest Dam-nations compilation, and a few tunes from our friends at Stardumb Records and Spaghetty Town Records. There’s the latest covers project from Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin. Plus all kinds of punk, power pop, and good ol’ fashioned garage rock! Part two of this month’s new release series is centered around a pretty diverse set of tracks from our friends at Rum Bar Records. Veteran Minneapolis rockers High On Stress opens the proceedings with two retrospective tracks from their new EP, and then we have the b-side of the debut Rum Bar release by legendary actor/musician/DJ Michael Des Barres! There’s also the classic R&B sounds of Angela Tini (recorded by Deke Dickerson!), the punk-ish power of Inflatable Idols and The Spackles before concluding with a frantic cover of The Barracudas “I Can’t Pretend” by Gene Champagne. There’s plenty of other Ledge friends, including fellow South Dakotans Friends of Cesar Romero, Brad Marino, Phil Cook & the Fall Dogs, Ricky Rochelle, and so much more. Plus, a ton of great new Australian bands that I didn’t realize were dominating the second half of the show until I was looking up biographical details. What tracks did you enjoy the most? I wanted to call this the final new release episode of 2025, but that’s technically not true as next week’s holiday extravaganza will feature almost all new tracks. But it’s the last “real” episode of this sort, and it’s as great as any show of this type we’ve put together all year. There’s a ton of veteran acts featured this week – The Wedding Present, Daniel Romano, Superchunk, Juliana Hatfield, and Cheap Trick. There’s also Fast Kids, the new side project by The Mystery Light frontman Mike Brandon, and the second album by Plosivs, one of many John Reis projects. Of course, I can’t forget the latest projects involving Wild Billy Childish – is own Thee Headcoats and the first album since 1999 by Thee Headcoatees! Of course, there’s also a Rum Bar Records segment that highights live material from The Dogs, a new supergroup called Speedtwinn, and the latest single by Girl with a Hawk. Plus, lots of the power pop and garage rock that are staples of The Ledge! For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Send us a textFrank stops by the show to discuss his solo record, his childhood adventures with his brother and so much more. *****Living Between the Lines is the debut solo LP from Frank Meyer. A long time coming, Meyer's been hinting at it for a while now with Bandcamp exclusive tracks, covers on tribute albums, acoustic solo shows, and his acclaimed collaboration album with Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers. Like the Eddie collab, LBTL is out on Kitten Robot Records. The 11-song album adds touches of blues and soul to Meyer's expected high-energy rock ‘n 'roll, revealing a more mature voice. He is joined for duets by longtime friend and collaborator Lisa Kekaula of the Bellrays on the title track, Runaways icon Cherie Currie on “Piece of Me” and Spaghetti himself on “Partners In Crime.”An award-winning musician, filmmaker and author, Meyer has a track record that covers rock ‘n 'roll, punk, heavy metal, blues, and country. Known for his work with everyone from Rock ‘n 'Roll Hall of Famers James Williamson (Iggy & the Stooges) and Wayne Kramer (MC5) to legendary punk act FEAR, Meyer has carved out a career full of unlikely collaborations, hard work, searing guitar playing, and ace songwriting skills.“It meant a lot to have these particular vocalists join me on my solo debut,” says Meyer. “Lisa and I go way back to my earliest days of the music scene in L.A.. Eddie is also an ld friend and touring buddy, and was a big inspiration in making this album. Cherie saw the Streewalkin' Cheetahs early on and helped us get signed. So all of them are dear to me and have been integral in my career.”As kids, Frank and his brother (actor Breckin Meyer) put on plays and lip-sync concerts for their parents. By age 12, lil 'Frankie was playing guitar, writing songs and recording at Frank Zappa's house with his childhood friends Ahmet and Dweezil. By age 15, he was gigging professionally around the ‘80s Hollywood club scene with his teenage high school band. In the mid-'90s, Meyer formed punk act the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, who went on to record many acclaimed albums, tour the world and carve out a niche as one of L.A.'s hardest working, hardest rocking bands. The band remains active with new releases and reissues out in stores on Rum Bar Records, Heavy Medication Records, and Ghost Highway Records, plus European and US touring activity.*****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Last week’s look at what’s been spinning on the Hudson turntable was so fun that I thought we’d do it again. This week’s version, though, differs in that it also includes some digital treats. The announcement from the Numero Group of the upcoming Husker Du box, 1985 The Miracle Year was a no-brainer when it was accompanied by four more new sneak peaks. And I couldn’t stop myself from playing soem of the previously-released rarities that will again feature on the upcoming box set version of The Replacements’ Let It Be. But there are also a couple of great compilation albums that deserved some notice. First off, there’s the latest free release from our friends at Rum Bar Records. The Summer School Sampler features 34 tracks of brand new or recently-released material, and like I said it’s free!  And the 15th volume of Bored Teenagers compiles rare British punk singles from 1976-83! On this episode, we are joined by all three members of the legendary Ape Hangers. At the end of June, we did a zoom interview with Pete Sjostedt, Bob Kiah, and Dennis McCarthy — better known as Ape Hangers — for a fun, free-flowing conversation. These guys are not only amazing musicians but longtime friends and all-around great people. At the time, we were a little vague about what was on the horizon, but now I can finally let the cat out of the bag: Ape Hangers are officially back with a brand-new EP and single coming soon on Rum Bar Records. It's been over 20 years since their incredible self-titled second album and even longer since their debut on A&M Records, which featured the unforgettable “I Don't Want To Live Today,” famously included in the cult classic film Empire Records. And here's the really exciting part — the band is playing their first Boston show in more than two decades on Saturday, August 23 at 3 PM at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain. They'll be sandwiched between two Boston rock staples, The Dogmatics and Stop Calling Me Frank, making it a powerhouse lineup for anyone who loves real, gritty, high-energy rock 'n' roll. I generally label the first part of the monthly new release series the “friends of the show” broadcast. Looking at tonight’s folder of tunes, though, the sequel actually has more artists of that sort than part one had. As always, there’s  lengthy set recapping a ton of wonderful Rum Bar Records release. Let’s face it, thanks to their generosity and the sherr number of great records they put out every month they fit the “best friend” category. But a large portion of the show includes a number of other submitted tracks by the likes of Shortwaves, Joe Normal, mp clarke, The Rockerati, and The chrisVandalay Project. And a thumbs up to the always prolific Friends of Cesar Romero for putting out not one but three new releases this past month! There’s also some great tracks from veteran artists this month. The Black Watch just released their 25th album. 25! And this one’s a double! The Reds, Pinks and Purples contnue their jangle pop snark with The Past Is a Garden I Never Fed. There’s a four album set by Hallelujah The Hills, and the returns of The Untamed Youth and Dropkick Murphys. What is your fave new release? For more […]

As it is the last Friday of the second quarter of the year, it’s time to once again take a look back at the highlights of the last three months. Like usual, there’s a wonderful mix of all kinds of great music, from veteran bands (The Minus 5, The Waterboys, Swans) to brand new bands (Psychic Pigs, The Burgers). There’s free bandcamp faves (Friends of Cesar Romero, Vista Blue), our usual mix of Rum Bar Records bands, and multi-disc concept albums (David Lowery, The Waterboys). There’s some good old fashioned rock ‘n roll, garage rock, punk, and even some indescribible multi-genre bands that I like to call “garage-prog”.  What new albums have you been jamming? This second part of the monthly new release series probably should have been titled after the final song of the show. Former Blackhearts guitarist Ricky Byrd’s “RnR’s Demise (Has Been Greatly Exaggerated)” certainly matches the philosophy of The Ledge, and the fact that month after month we provide over four hours of newly issued tunes is certainly proof. Again, we have a number of “friends of the show”, including White Rose Motor Oil, New Brutarians, Geoff Palmer, and a whole set of tracks from Rum Bar Records. There’s also the return of The Memories, The Minus 5, and Throwing Muses, along with new bands (at least to us) such as The Roxies, Midlife Crisis, Dead Bars, and Creem Circus (love the name, btw).  Also, just a note that due to an upcoming medical procedure there will be now show next week (and possibly the following week).  For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Well, once again it’s a mix of old and new bands of various genres, including rock, punk, power pop, Americana, and indie. There’s a wonderful sampling of releases from our friends at Rum Bar Records, including a couple of tracks from Class Out The Ass, the fabulous new record by Miss Georgia Peach. Guided By Voices are back with yet another new album, and they are joined by the outrageous sounds of Lambrini Girls. The Dirty Nil complain about the internet, while The Jellybricks are outraged by this “Age of Stupid”. Numb Surprise also returns with a lovely cover of “Waterloo Sunset”.  For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

It may be a new year, but it’s the same great formula for the first Friday of the month. Yes, it’s nothing but new releases for the first show of 2025, and it’s highlighted again by what we like to call “friends of the show”. White Rose Motor Oil have yet another great cover. The wonderful two-piece The Ex-Bombers have a magnificent new seven-inch single. Numb Surprise, The False Positives, Eric Hisaw Band and many others have strong new tracks. Of course, there is also the latest lineup from our friends at Rum Bar Records. Miss Georgia Peach returns with another collaboration with Nashville Pussy. The Legendary Swagger follows up their reissue of Sinners, Harlots & Hooligans with an upcoming new record, Broke And Broken. Plus, we have two tracks from Brad Marino’s new rarities album, On The Brink: Rarities, Remixed & Unreleased! For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

It has become an annual tradition for The Ledge to put together at least two hours of (mainly) brand new holiday music that does NOT suck. That’s the key word here. While most commercial Christmas music is banal, saccharine nonsense designed to annoy mall and fast food shoppers, every year sees a plethora of new rock and roll-based songs to get us through this pressurized time of the year. Sure, many of these tunes are full of humor and snark, but none of them can be called novelty songs. Yes, there’s also more than a few covers, but how can one not resist redoing the Ramones or Slade?  There’s also quite a few tracks from what I like to call “friends of the show”. Jeremy Porter once again has a new Christmas tune. Vista Blue has their usual monthly free EP. White Rose Motor Oil continues their year of classic covers, and Numb Surprise continues to…well, surprise us with spooky tunes that literally creep into my tiny brain. And yes, our pals at Rum Bar Records have their usual spot in the show with some heartfelt tracks. Head to http://scotthudson.blogspotcom for more info and setlists!

Part two of the December new release series also is noteworthy for being the final new release episode of the year! What a fantastic 12 months of tunes we’ve enjoyed, and this episode is a perfect exmple. There’s a ton of new tracks from our friends at Rum Bar Records, including the fabulous new album by Dirty Truckers’ leader Tom Baker. Justine & Me is inspired by Baker’s partner Justine Covault, who tragically passed away in the summer of 2023.   There’s also fabulous new tracks by veteran rockers such as Ike Reilly, Lucinda Williams, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and many others. There’s a handful of D.O.A. covers from a fantastic new tribute album, No Escape From What You Are. And, as always, there’s always some brand new bands getting their first airing on my show. Oh yeah, and there’s also a sampling of some classics from a number of reissues from The Green Pajamas, Talking Heads, and the long-awaited (I’m) Stranded box set by The Saints! This time around we have the usual set of fabulous releses from our friends at Rum Bar Records, along with the returns of old faves such as The Lemonheads, Julian Cope, Chesterfield Kings, and Japandroids. By now, most of you know the routine. The first episode of every month features nothing but new releases, and this month is no different. Wait, there is one major difference. Due to a scheduling conflict, there will not be a show next week so for the first time this year there is not a two part new release series.  So this month there is one super action-packed episode, full of the usual garage, punk, indie, post-punk, Americana, and whatever other category is out there. There are the usual veterans mixed with brand new acts. There are “friends” of the show, such as Jeremy Porter & The Tucos, who have a fabulous new album called Dynamite Alley. Of course, there’s also a set devoted to our buddies at Rum Bar Records, but there’s another blistering set devoted to new tunes from Slovenly Recordings!   For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Part two of this month’s new release series is highlighted by long-awaited returns by legendary veteran bands. The Dictators celebrate their 50th anniversary with their first album in 25 years. The Fastbacks are back after a 23 year hiatus. Peter Noone of 60’s pop idiols Herman’s Hermits is back with vocal contributions to a Buffalo Springfield-Rolling Stones hybrid cover created by The Weeklings. Other veteran artists with new tunes include Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Jon Spencer. There’s also a plethora of brand new tunes from our friends at Rum Bar Records, including the kickoff of a new monthly singles campaign by The Dogmatics. There’s hot new singles from Rum Bar regulars The Laissez Fairs, Cheap Cassettes, along with Junior Varsit, Joe Jennings MVP’s, and a Dogmatics side project called Hotbox. Besides all of those hot acts, there’s a ton of female voices heard on this episode. Cherrie Currie collaborates with the Dead Boys on a “believe it or not” cover of Taylor Swift. Lura Jane Grace is back with a wondefully angry new EP. There’s also new music by The Bell Rays, The Dahlmanns, Vicious Dreams, and many others! For more info, […]
