Jonathan Swift, "Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it.” … never truer than in 2025 This week on the Colombia Calling podcast Emily Hart and Richard McColl tackle the issue of disinformation and fact-checking in Colombia and fortunately, we don't have to take on this task alone but are joined by two experts in the field. Laura Sarabia Rangel is the Editor of El Detector de Mentiras at La Silla Vacia and Jose Felipe Sarmiento joins us from ColombiaCheck and we get to pick their brains about the need for fact-checking, disinformation in Colombia and how one undertakes the process of finding the truth. There have been so many circumstances where people and politicians have been saying things that are simply untrue, in Colombia specifically, about the health reform, the stigmatisation of indigenous communities or the denialism of the False Positives, to name a few. So, we get to hear how Laura and Jose Felipe work, put some rumours and untruths to bed and discuss what readers and consumers can do to make sure they're consuming high quality media. The Colombia Briefing is reported by Emily Hart.

Think diagnosing food allergies is as simple as running a test? Think again. Food allergy testing is a maze of gray areas, false positives, and, hopefully, a clear food allergy diagnosis. Navigating food allergy testing can feel overwhelming, with skin pricks, blood tests, and conflicting advice. How do you determine which tests are truly useful? How can you avoid unnecessary dietary restrictions from false results? In this episode, Dr. David Stukus, a board-certified allergist and immunologist, joins Dr. Gupta and Kortney to demystify the science of food allergy testing. From the importance of patient history to the latest diagnostic tools, Dr. Stukus provides clear guidance to help you make informed decisions while navigating food allergy testing. What we cover in our episode about food allergy testing The Crucial Role of History in Food Allergy Diagnosis: Dr. Stukus highlights why understanding a patient's reaction history (symptoms, timing, and context) is critical for guiding effective testing decisions. Choosing the Right Tests: We break down skin prick testing, blood tests like IgE and component testing, and innovations like epitope mapping. Dr. Stukus explains why IgG testing is untrustworthy and emphasizes oral food challenges as the gold standard for diagnosis. False Positives and Negatives: Learn why expert interpretation of test results is crucial and how overtesting can lead to unnecessary restrictions and confusion. When to See an Allergist: Practical advice on when to consult a specialist and what to expect during your visit for evidence-based care. This podcast is made in partnership with The Allergy & Asthma Network. Thanks to Genentech for sponsoring today's episode. About Our Guest Dr. David R. Dave Harrison joins us on the show today to talk about his all-star band The False Positives and their new recordings. We also take a trip down memory lane to revisit his work with the late '80s/early '90s band The Voodoo Dolls, along with much more! The Voodoo Dolls were a garage rock band from Boston, known for their raw, energetic sound that blends elements of punk, rock 'n' roll, and psychedelia. Emerging from the vibrant Boston music scene, the band typically drew inspiration from classic garage rock influences like The Stooges, The Sonics, and The Cramps, while adding their own unique twist. The band's style featured gritty guitar riffs, pounding rhythms, and rebellious, sometimes cryptic lyrics that reflect the energy and chaos of their live shows. The Voodoo Dolls appealed to fans of underground rock and the DIY ethos, creating music that's raw and unapologetic.MusicThe False Positives "Long Distance Romance"Additional MusicThe Charms "So Pretty"The Dogmatics "I Love Rock N Roll"Produced and Hosted by Steev Riccardo

Daydrianna Hefner is a Cherokee County, Georgia, mother of two who had a history of substance abuse, evident by a string of mugshots from years ago.Hefner's addiction led to prison and intervention from the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS), which placed her two kids in foster care in October 2021.While behind bars, Hefner decided to get sober. “I needed to get arrested to have that long clear frame of mind,” she said, and today cites her sobriety date as May 28, 2022.When she was released, Hefner agreed to a DFCS case plan to get her children back, which included random drug screens. But now Hefner said some of the results make no sense, arguing “the department is saying I failed drug screens and I know I haven't used any drugs.“I don't know what to do and feel helpless.”Read the full story here: https://www.atlantanewsfirst.com/2024/11/14/georgias-contracted-drug-labs-under-scrutiny-over-alleged-false-positives/

What if everything we think we know about life—about time, space, and even our place in the universe—is only scratching the surface? Imagine that our search for extraterrestrial life isn't just about finding ‘others,' but also about understanding ourselves. What if the way we explore the stars mirrors how we need to evolve right here on Earth?Welcome back to Superhumanize, the space where we journey deep into the intersections of wellness, science, philosophy, and human potential. Today's conversation is with someone who stands at the very edge of these frontiers: Dr. Adam Frank, an astrophysicist, author, and thought leader who has dedicated his career to understanding both the cosmos and our place within it.Adam isn't just about stars and galaxies—he's also a bridge between worlds: between science and spirituality, technology and tradition, and humanity's distant past and possible futures. He explores the birth and death of stars and also the potential rise and fall of civilizations, both here on Earth and beyond. His work on technosignatures—the clues left behind by advanced alien civilizations—forces us to ask: How do we know what we are even looking for? And perhaps more importantly, what would finding something out there mean for the way we live down here?In his book Light of the Stars: Alien Worlds and the Fate of the Earth, Adam weaves together the quest for alien life with the urgent need for planetary stewardship during the Anthropocene. His latest work, The Little Book of Aliens, offers an exploration of humanity's deep fascination with extraterrestrials and why these narratives matter as much for our culture as for science.During today's conversation, we'll explore the scientific and cultural dimensions of the search for extraterrestrial life, the lessons we can learn from modeling the rise and fall of potential alien civilizations, and what the nature of time means for how we live and evolve as individuals and societies. We'll also talk about the fascinating intersection between science and spirituality—a recurring theme in Adam's life and work. And as someone who has contributed to media like The New York Times, The Atlantic, and NPR, as well as serving as a consultant for Marvel's movie Doctor Strange, Adam has a unique perspective on how popular culture shapes the public's understanding of science—and why storytelling is a vital tool in inspiring humanity to reach its highest potential. This conversation will challenge you, inspire you, and hopefully, make you look at the sky—and yourself—a little differently. Let's dive into the universe with Adam Frank.Episode highlights:01:24 Exploring Techno Signatures and Alien Civilizations04:28 The Evolution of SETI and Technosignatures09:05 Technological Advances in Detecting Alien Life12:36 Challenges and False Positives in the Search for Life18:48 Cultural and Societal Impacts of Discovering Extraterrestrial Life23:33 Personal Stories and UFO Phenomena26:19 Skepticism and Scientific Perspectives on UFOs35:01 Modeling Alien Civilizations for Human Sustainability35:53 The Technosphere and Climate Change37:06 Sustainability and Civilization's Future39:27 The Role of Science and Skepticism41:09 Consciousness and Experience51:31 The Concept of Time57:48 Science in Popular Culture01:01:09 Steps for a Sustainable FutureResources mentioned:Dr. Frank's WebsiteBooks by Dr. Adam FrankGuest's social handles:

When Ushta was pregnant with her third child, she found herself being told which tests she would be having done—rather than being offered options and having them explained to her. As a genetic counselor working in reproductive genetics, she had also started fielding many questions from individuals looking for more insight and direction in a time of expanding prenatal testing options. These experiences led her to leave her role in industry and start her own company: FiND Genetics, an independent telemedicine genetics consulting practice. Ushta shares the path that led her to FiND Genetics, her perspective on recent changes within the field of genetic counseling, and how genetic counseling can empower patients to make informed decisions. 99% of business media stories on startups are essentially PR for the startup itself. This makes these stories a one-sided source of information on what it's like to operate and grow a startup. While there are more and more discussions of mistakes, basically no one at Inc or Entrepreneur or anywhere else really will ever greenlight a debate on this or that failed startup unless, like Theranos, it ended in some massive ethical scandal. Failure is depressing, they say. Not me. I'm honored to bring you a past episode, the first in a two-part interview with Professor Tom Eisenmann of the Harvard Business School (HBS). He and I chat about themes from his new book Why Startups Fail and how these patterns play out in the world of consumer packaged goods (CPG). In this episode, we discuss what to do when you have little business training, how unit economics evolve differently in CPG vs. tech startups, and how to prevent False Positives by doing just the right pre-revenue research.Since joining the HBS faculty in 1997, Tom has led The Entrepreneurial Manager, an introductory course taught to all first-year MBAs, and launched fourteen electives on all aspects of entrepreneurship, including one on startup failure. Eisenmann has authored more than one hundred HBS case studies, and his writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, and Forbes.Your Host: Dr. James F. In this episode of the Abundantly Clear Podcast podcast, I share some valuable insights on false positives in business and how they can lead to poor decision-making. As a business owner, it's crucial to detach our emotions from the decision-making process and analyze the data objectively to determine whether our strategies are actually working. I discuss how vanity metrics, confirmation bias, and fear of failure can affect our perception and lead us to believe that certain activities are contributing to our success when they may not be. Mayuresh Ektare, an expert in risk management and SVP of Product Management at Brinqa, joins Sean Martin for a quick dive into the world of centralizing risk management frameworks. Ektare explains that the magic sauce isn't just bringing the data together, but stitching it together to create a unified understanding of an organization's attack surface. By overlaying business context, customers can prioritize and act upon the right set of findings in a timely fashion. Martin and Ektare discuss the challenges faced by customers in finding a centralized repository for business context, with many relying on tribal knowledge or CMDB records.Ektare introduces the concept of a Risk Operations Center (ROC), which allows organizations to orchestrate the risk lifecycle and proactively reduce exposure. Comparing it to a Security Operations Center (SOC), he highlights the importance of extending vulnerability management programs to encompass cloud infrastructure and application security posture management. The conversation also touches on the challenges of managing false positives and distilling a vast amount of findings into actionable items. By overlaying business context and understanding the impact of vulnerabilities on their organization, customers can fine-tune security scores, prioritize effectively, and respond accordingly.Note: This story contains promotional content. e can probably all agree that any false positive test result is bad, but I think it's safe to say that some false positives, like a false positive HIV test for example, is much more anxiety provoking than others. And when it comes to HIV, there have been a number of key advances in the field over the past decade, include the development of improved diagnostics and optimized algorithmic approaches, all of which have allowed for earlier detection of infected patients, and particularly those with acute HIV. Among these advancements has been the development of 4th and 5th generation serologic assays, which offer multiple benefits over prior assay versions, but unfortunately, are not immune to the possibility of false positive results. So, confirmatory test remain a necessary – the challenge though is that depending on the institution and environment, the turnaround time for such confirmatory testing can be prolonged, leaving patients and clinicians in a kind of diagnostic limbo. So, is there a way to minimize the risk of false positive first-tier HIV serologic results? And that is the question will be the focus of our discussion today. What were the "false positives or falsos positivos? Adriaan Alsema of Colombia Reports joins us on this "explainer" episode. This is the name given to the killings of young men - mainly from humble families - carried out by the Colombian army to inflate numbers of "neutralized" guerrilla combatants during the long-running conflict. The Colombian army's aim was to pass them off as left-wing rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to boost its kill rate and give the impression it was winning the armed conflict against the group. This past week, several members of the Armed Forces guilty of this heinous crime stood before family members of those killed in a hearing hosted by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP, which was created as a result of the 2016 peace accords) in the town of Ocaña, Norte de Santander. The JEP is designed to pursue transitional and restorative justice and the military officials confirmed their participation in the practice known as false positives from luring out of work young men from Bogotá, Soacha, Bucaramanga and other regions of Colombia, to areas of conflict with the promise of work. This hearing, which was televised, has revealed just a tiny percentage of the crimes committed which has resulted in 6,402 confimed assassinations of civilians so far during the mid-2000s. Tune in to hear about the False Positives, the hearing and what may happen next.
