What happens when someone who grew up in the Lucasfilm Games golden era decides that today's AI tools are failing creatives? Mike Levine has spent more than 30 years building at the intersection of games, XR, VFX, and interactive storytelling—and his verdict is clear: the current AI stack is a fragmented, overcomplicated mess that turns directors into prompt engineers.Mike started as a tester at Lucasfilm Games (later LucasArts), working his way into the art department on titles like Sam & Max and The Dig before helping ship live-action Star Wars games such as Rebel Assault and Jedi Knight II. He later built rotoscoping tools used across the VFX industry, collaborated with ILM and Pixar, experimented with mobile AR games for Hasbro and HoloLens, and dipped into crypto gaming—before finally co-founding MovieFlow (now FilmSpark), an AI-native production platform designed so that filmmakers, agencies, and showrunners can move from script to screen without needing a computer science degree. The AI XR news you should know: Apple taps Google Gemini to power Siri, acknowledging that building world-class LLMs in-house makes little financial sense. Meta cuts 10% of Reality Labs, right-sizing its VR bets while pivoting toward wearables. Xreal raises another $100M amid questions about Chinese state influence and data flows. Higgs Field lands $80M at a $1.3B valuation for AI cinematography tools that many filmmakers still find unreliable. Wikipedia signs licensing deals with major AI companies after years of being scraped for free. OpenAI invests $252M in Sam Altman–backed Merge Labs, raising fresh conflict-of-interest questions.Key Moments Timestamps:[00:23:02] From Boston journalist-to-be to accidental hire at Lucasfilm Games[00:26:24] The “test pit” culture at Lucas and how Nintendo experience got Mike in the door[00:28:45] Moving into the art department, learning Photoshop from early legends, and shipping Sam & Max[00:31:15] Live-action Star Wars games: Rebel Assault, Jedi Knight II, and convincing George Lucas[00:34:38] Visiting Pixar with new VFX tools and recognizing the same creative “magic” as LucasArts[00:36:24] Doug Trumbull's influence on Mike's sense of cinematic possibility and immersion[00:43:27] The urinal meeting at Magic Leap and what early spatial computing got right (and wrong)[00:49:00] Why most AI tools are “dark ages” for filmmakers: node graphs, 10+ subscriptions, no story view[00:51:00] Building MovieFlow/FilmSpark: story-first, timeline-based AI production for long-form and vertical shows[00:53:00] The Neighborhood Podcast: a 90-second vertical murder mystery as proof-of-concept for AI-native seriesWhen humans can generate shots, scenes, and even entire episodes in minutes, the bottleneck shifts from production to vision. Season 8 turns the volume up as Dangerous Dave dives into one of the biggest pop phenomena of the late 1980s — New Kids on the Block, the boyband that helped invent the modern blueprint for teen pop superstardom. We rewind to 1989 in What Happened Way Back When, exploring obscure songs, cult films, and television highlights from a year where pop culture, youth identity, and arena-sized entertainment were evolving rapidly. Retro Headlines from both the UK and the US help set the stage for a world where MTV ruled youth culture, CDs were replacing cassette tapes, and teen pop was about to explode globally. In a huge Dangerous Deep Dive, Dave explores the full history of New Kids on the Block — from their Boston origins and producer Maurice Starr's vision, through their breakthrough album Hangin' Tough, to the arena-filling success of Step by Step. Each album is explored in detail with song highlights and commentary on how the band built one of the first global boyband empires. The episode also looks at the group's split, their later reunion, and the lasting legacy they left behind for the entire boyband industry.Elsewhere in the episode:

We're excited to welcome Seattle-based interior designer Lisa Staton to the show. With more than 20 years of experience, her firm is known for seamlessly blending current trends with timeless appeal to create spaces that feel both fresh and rooted in history. Lisa joins Taryn and Caroline to discuss her East Coast upbringing, how she navigates the "algorithm era" of design, and why she believes every room needs a mix of old and new. She shares her philosophy on "Soup and Symphony" design, how to choose the right white paint for your region, and why the house itself is always the first client. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Use the House as Your Guide: Let the home's original architecture be your "guiding life force" when renovating. Matching details like millwork to the original style creates a cohesive foundation, allowing for trendy updates without losing character.  Practice "Soup and Symphony": Focus on how all design elements work together rather than critiquing individual pieces. Like a soup or symphony, the magic lies in the harmonious blend of textures, colors, and furniture, not just the single ingredients.  Respect Your Region's Light: Choose paint colors based on your specific location's light, not just what looks good in photos. For example, the blue-toned light of the Pacific Northwest calls for warmer whites to avoid sterility, unlike a sun-drenched desert home.  What You'll Hear on This Episode: 00:00 Welcome & Introductions 01:45 Lisa's background: From Boston history to Sotheby's art auctions 04:00 The "Algorithm Effect": How social media homogenizes design 06:00 Balancing high-end design with accessible updates 09:00 How to respect architecture without creating a "period piece" 11:00 Designing for location: Why a Cape Cod style doesn't always work in Arizona 13:00 The collaborative process and avoiding "reverse Google search" design 15:00 The "Soup and Symphony" analogy for cohesive interiors 19:00 Mixing traditional cabinetry with sleek, modern furniture 25:00 Designing for the Pacific Northwest: Coziness and light management 28:00 Lisa's go-to white paints for different lights 31:00 Tips for choosing exterior paint colors 36:00 Decorating Dilemma: Updating a beige-on-beige rental apartment 44:00 Why you should embrace "weird" art and vintage finds 52:00 Closing notes & where to find Lisa Also Mentioned: Lisa Staton Design | Website Follow Lisa on Instagram: @lisastatondesign Paint Colors Mentioned: Sherwin Williams Alabaster, Benjamin Moore Simply White, Lancaster White, Swiss Coffee Shop Ballard Designs Please send in your questions so we can answer them on our next episode! Che' Afrique—singer, songwriter, and teacher—joins us to talk about becoming a better mother, paying attention to kids in a loud world, and why “being there” beats any illusion of balance. We dig into the moments parents miss, the power of boundaries, and how structure saves more futures than speeches ever will. From Boston classrooms to Chicago memories, Shea breaks down how education and edge shaped her voice. She takes us back to her first performances, the shaky hands that came with stage fright, and the mindset shift that turned critique into confidence. Then we get into the heart of craft: creativity, authorship, and the debate around ghostwriters. Che take is bold—give the pen its flowers, not just the face on the cover. Credit the creators, expand who gets seen, and let authenticity lead the sound. The standout story lands with “Not The One,” a heartbreak track born on New Year's Day, written through tears and recorded as a freestyle. That song became proof that vulnerability travels: men and women heard their own lives in it. We talk fame versus privacy, choosing fortune over endless cameras, and how artists can share truth without selling their peace. Along the way, we call out book bans, defend critical thinking, and map how to teach kids to question with respect. The first thing I said to Nellie Scott, Executive Director of the Corita Art Center in downtown Los Angeles that preserves and promotes Corita Kent's art, teaching, and passion for social justice, was that I wish we didn't need to do this. I wish Corita Kent's work had already done its work, that the world was free of oppression, racism, inequality, chaos and fear. Maybe Nellie and I could just talk about love and a butterfly, the upcoming showing of Kent's work at Andrew Kreps and kaufmann repetto in NYC this month. But the times they are a'changing and oh how they stay the same. The new Corita Art Center opened in March and since, Pope Francis has passed, the structure of democracy in America has been bent to a near breaking point and art has an act of protest and social awareness is struggling to find its footing. So, it's time for Corita Kent once again. In this conversation on the Radio Juxtapoz podcast produced by the Unibrow, Nellie Scott speaks of the founding of the Center in 1997 and its association with the Immaculate Heart Community, how Corita Kent went from entering the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary at age 18, to championing civil rights, anti-war activism, and peace, through her unique aesthetic of printmaking. She left the order in 1968 and moved to Boston, where she continued to make work. Her art, and her life, was devoted to finding a deep understanding of the human experience, through teaching and creating. Corita left behind a great legacy that continues to reverberate - at the time of her death in 1986, Corita had created almost 800 serigraph editions and thousands of watercolours, alongside public and private commissions. From Boston to Los Angeles, Corita's life is a truly inspired story. The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 163 was recorded at the Corita Art Center in Los Angeles in late April 2025. Original music by Aesop Rock for Radio Juxtapoz

Vidcast:  https://www.instagram.com/drhowardsmithreports/reel/DE2_4R0O5BN/ Even occasional drinkers raise their risk of cancer.  From Boston's famed Dana-Farber Cancer Institute come details on why that is true. Alcohol damages the tissues it touches all along your gastrointestinal tract creating oxidative stress in cells. When your cells try to repair themselves, DNA changes, that is mutations, occur and some lead to cancer.  Then too, alcohol is metabolized in your body to the carcinogen acetaldehyde.  Alcohol directly inflames and damages your liver leading to cancer.  It triggers increases in your body's estrogen levels.  For women, that can facilitate breast cancer development and studies show 15% of these cancers are alcohol-related.  Finally, alcohol is a carb and puts pounds on you, a known cancer risk. Dana-Farber nutritionists recommend reserving any drinking only for special occasions.  That doesn't mean TGIF. https://blog.dana-farber.org/insight/2023/09/what-you-should-know-about-alcohol-consumption-and-cancer-risk/ #alcohol #cancer #mutations #acetaldehyde #liver #breast #obesity

New York Times Bestselling author Allison Pataki joins me on the show today to talk about her latest release, Finding Margaret Fuller. We discussed Margaret's place in history, the many famous transcendentalist writers she was connected to, and her influence on the U.S. feminist movement. We also talked about Allison's research process, including her visit to Concord and Walden Pond and how real historical figures morph into a characters in her novels. Here's a description of the novel: Massachusetts, 1836. Young, brazen, beautiful, and unapologetically brilliant, Margaret Fuller accepts an invitation from Ralph Waldo Emerson, the celebrated “Sage of Concord,” to meet his coterie of enlightened friends shaping a nation in the throes of its own self-discovery. By the end of her stay, she will become “the radiant genius and fiery heart” of the Transcendentalists, a role model to young Louisa May Alcott, an inspiration to Nathaniel Hawthorne's character of Hester Prynne and the scandalous Scarlet Letter, a friend to Henry David Thoreau as he ventures into the woods of Walden Pond . . . and a muse to Emerson himself. But Margaret craves more than poetry and interpersonal drama, and she finds her restless soul in need of new challenges and adventure. And so she charts a singular course against a backdrop of dizzying historical drama: From Boston, where she hosts a women-only literary salon for students like Elizabeth Cady Stanton; to the editorial meetings of The Dial magazine, where she hones her pen as its co-founder; to Harvard's library, where she is the first woman to study within its walls; to the gritty New York streets where she spars with Edgar Allan Poe and reports on the writings of Frederick Douglass. Margaret defies conventions time and again as an activist for women and an advocate for humanity, earning admirers and scathing critics alike. When the legendary Horace Greeley offers an assignment in Europe, Margaret again makes history as the first female foreign news correspondent, mingling with luminaries like Frederic Chopin, Walt Whitman, George Sand, and more. But it is in Rome where she finds a world of passion, romance, and revolution, taking a Roman count as a lover—and sparking an international scandal. Evolving yet again into the roles of mother and countess, Margaret enters a new fight for Italy's unification. With a star-studded cast and epic sweep of historical events, this is a story of an inspiring trailblazer, a woman who loved big and lived even bigger—a fierce adventurer who transcended the rigid roles ascribed to women, and changed history for millions, all on her own terms. We go through both Joshua's seasons in Club Med in detail as well as the people he liked working with and we get into that Japanese-salsa-dancer story as well! Joshua also talks about the season he spent with yoga guru Jack England in Club Med Sandpiper and we trade Uncle Larry stories from Club Med Playa Blanca as well! Please enjoy! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. We're delighted to be joined by songwriter and worship leader, Sharon Byrd (Kingsway Worship) as guest host for this episode.  And, on today's episode, we share an interview from our Writing Club with Jaime Jamgochian. Sitting down to talk with Jaime, you quickly realize she is a woman of faith who God is using in many different ways through her music and message. It's immediately evident she has a passion to see people know how much God loves them and a desire to see that reality change their lives—because it has changed hers. Jaime came to know the Lord at 21 while studying music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. God completely changed her life and it is her greatest desire to see people encounter Jesus in a real way. From Boston, Jaime ended up in Seattle where she was a worship leader for several years and began writing her own worship songs. It was during that time in Seattle that Jaime signed with Centricity Records and went on to record 3 albums with them. She then moved to Nashville, TN which she still calls home, and continues to travel throughout the US and internationally leading people in worship, singing songs of hope, and sharing a message of finding your value and purpose in Christ.Take the Songwriter Personality TestThis simple 10-minute test created by our founder, Krissy Nordhoff, will help you know your strengths as a songwriter and it will also help you better identify where you fit in the co-writing room.
