Florida’s $101.5 billion budget approved by state lawmakers gets the Governor's blessing. Also on today’s Sunrise: — Ron DeSantis held a news conference in New Smyrna Beach to sign the budget, doing again a couple of hours later in Zephyrhills. The Governor also vetoed more than 140 spending projects, including his own pet project: a billion-dollar fund using federal COVID-19 bucks to respond to future disasters and emergencies. — We also heard the Governor's first official reaction to Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried's announcement that she will run for Governor. — Despite DeSantis saying she “does nothing,” Fried does plenty, especially when she uses her Cabinet position to serve as the official burr under the Governor's butt. She's gotten under his skin on many occasions. — Former Florida Senator and current NASA Administrator Bill Nelson delivers a "State of Space Agency" speech with a little help from William Shatner. — In the aftermath of the 2020 election and the GOP campaign to limit voting, there's a new campaign in Florida to add the Fair Elections for Democracy Amendments to the state constitution that will make it easier to vote. — Sean Shaw, founder of the group "People Over Profits,” talks about those three amendments on the Sunrise Interview. — And finally, a Florida Man tried to avoid animal cruelty charges for killing an iguana by claiming he was standing his ground.

In his historic 2018 campaign for Attorney General, Sean fought fearlessly for bold policies that put regular Floridians first. Now, as an attorney and civic leader, he's continuing to stand up for working people.Sean Shaw made history in 2018 as the Florida Democratic Party's first African-American nominee for Attorney General. Sean's progressive platform sought to expand rights for consumers and hold fraudsters, corrupt politicians, and special interests accountable. The election results proved the momentum for his candidacy: over 3,000,000 Floridians voted for his bold agenda, more than any other candidate for attorney general in state history.Earlier in his career, Sean was an independent watchdog for the public as the state's Insurance Consumer Advocate — working to protect consumers from price gouging and insurance fraud. Every decision Sean made was centered on what was best for consumers, not wealthy special interests.Elected to the State Legislature in 2016, Sean continued to fight for consumers, and championed equal rights and equal opportunity for all.  As an attorney in private practice, Sean fought for victims of the BP Oil Spill, ensuring families and businesses — whose only fault was having an unlucky address — get what they are owed.Today, Sean continues advocating for working people and is respected nationwide as a leader in the fight for economic and social justice. In 2019, he founded People Over Profits, a non-profit organization dedicated to standing against corporate influence and fighting for the rights of everyday people.Sean is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Florida's law school. Some kids grow up wanting to be an astronaut or a firefighter, but as Sean Shaw grew up in Tallahassee, his vision of the future was shaped by his after-school hang out spot: the Florida Supreme Court. After integrating the Jacksonville bar association, Leander Shaw, Sean's father, spent 20 years on Florida's Supreme Court, becoming the first black Chief Justice in the court's history in 1990. Sean says it would be “impossible” to say he doesn't feel pressure to live up to his father's legacy. Having been elected to Florida's House of Representatives in 2016, Shaw is now running to be Florida's Attorney General. He didn't see himself jumping into the race until he saw the changing political landscape in the wake of the 2016 national election. Shaw wants to bring back decency to politics. On this episode, Shaw discusses his reputation as a consumer advocate, following his father's footsteps, and his campaign's focus on common sense gun laws, medical marijuana, immigration, and protecting the Affordable Care Act.
