“Overman was killed inside the park. The baby was caught inside the park. Its mother is inside the park.” We watched “Jaws 3-D” with our friends, the Dames of Doom themselves, Nicole and Tess from Doom Generation Podcast, and we're cancelling our Sea World annual passes! We'd like to think there is some sort of continuity to the first two Jaws films, but the Brody brothers have been aged up faster than a baby on a soap opera. Dennis Quaid steps in as the eldest Brody bro, and he's the head of attraction maintenance (or something) at Sea World Orlando, and he is VERY hot and heavy with the main marine biologist and animal trainer played by none other than Bess Armstrong (yes, the mom from My So-Called Life). Somehow, a mother great white shark is trapped in the park, and mama and baby are wreaking havoc. Younger Brody bro is afraid of the water (rightfully), but Lea Thompson and her sexy waterskiing wiles lure him in on several, many occasions. At some point, this turns more into a disaster movie than your average Jaws “thriller,” but the real-life Sea World setting makes the trapped tourists trope fun.  The 3D gags are pretty much an afterthought, but this movie is HIGH CAMP.  Big mama shark ramming headfirst into an undersea restaurant is Cinema! Listen, animal rights are a very real issue, and we're not advocating for Sea World, but the trained dolphins giving us a perfect freeze-frame ending worthy of a Lisa Frank notebook is epic. 110: Nietzsche Contra Peterson - Yes, We Can Create Values

This episode is a polemic. While I have addressed Jordan Peterson's misunderstandings of the "God is dead" aphorism, or his bungling of Nietzsche's view of truth, here we address one of his most often repeated distortions of Nietzsche's philosophy. According to Jordan, Nietzsche said we can create our own values, but, in fact, this is impossible.I break down Jordan's misreading into four sections: 1) Jordan doesn't understand what Nietzsche means by "values"; 2) Jordan doesn't understand what Nietzsche means by "creating" values, 3) Jordan's problems with the "creation of values" fail, largely due to these misunderstandings, 4) Values do not need to be created by the Overman.

Athens Corner

Subscriber-only episodeThis can be understood as part two of my previous discussion of Nietzsche and the youth. Here I discuss the extremely important analysis of human psychology provided by Nietzsche's Zarathustra in sections 1.7 and 1.8 of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Combined, these two sections address the problematic psychology for the self-overcoming required of the would-be overman. Especially important is the relationship of this psychology to the youth and Zarathustra's political revolution. In particular, at issue is how the greatest aspects of the most talented youth can easily become their greatest danger by way of envy.

Athens Corner

Subscriber-only episodeAt issue in Zarathustra's speech here is everything encompassed in the phrase ‘the transvaluation of all values' (or ‘the revaluation of all values').  That is to say, this speech by Zarathustra marks the beginning of Nietzsche's experiment as a political founder in postmodernity.  I emphasize how the issue of Zarathustra's understanding of ‘the hinterworldly' is the question of the possibility of another ‘Enlightenment,' and it is precisely this question that constitutes the ultimate status of the teaching on the Overman in the text.  Here in particular is to be found a large part of the meaning of Nietzsche's atheism. This speech by Zarathustra is the true beginning of the possibility of ‘Enlightenment,' which is itself the possibility of the Overman.  Accordingly, it marks the true beginning of Zarathustra's fundamentally political project, which is to say the possibility of what man as such can become.

Athens Corner

Subscriber-only episodeContinuing on the immediate heels of his first speech on the Overman, here we get Zarathustra's second speech.  Much like the first, here we learn the pre-condition for the Overman in Zarathustra's understanding of love.  I emphasize the way in which this teaching of love provides the supplement to what the previous speech's account of nihilism destroys.  At issue, ultimately, is the criteria for discerning virtue going forward, which itself defines what Zarathustra understands as the meaning of 'culture' and 'civilization' after the overcoming of nihilism.

Athens Corner

Subscriber-only episodeHere we get the first of Zarathustra's two speeches devoted to the Overman.  We also learn about what Zarathustra understands is the necessary pre-condition for the Overman, and this provides a number of crucial details pertaining to the meaning and transformative power of nihilism as Nietzsche's Zarathustra understands it.  We also gain much insight into the scope of Zarathustra's political project for man amid and after nihilism.

Athens Corner

Subscriber-only episodeHaving gained his first new insight since returning to mankind, Zarathustra begins his true or official speeches with a speech about the kinds of spirit required in order to be or become Zarathustra's brother or disciple. I discuss the important Platonic parallels, the relationships to temporality and history, as well as how they represent deviations from Zarathustra's initial political project of the Overman. Zarathustra has now become an insurgent, and this first speech subtly contains what Zarathustra's insurgency will require not simply for those who would become his brother or disciple but also and especially the kind of rhetoric required of Zarathustra himself in order to successfully complete his insurgency.

Athens Corner

Subscriber-only episodeContinuing my summary of the initial teaching of Zarathustra's overman and last man, here I discuss the way in which both constitute Nietzsche's involvement with the broader debate of culture in 18th and 19th century Germany, going back to Rousseau and Kant.

Athens Corner

Subscriber-only episodeThis is the first in a two-part discussion assessing the initial teaching of the Overman and the Last Man.  In addition, because of how important it is to properly understand both, I provide detailed analysis of both as they appear in a number of Nietzsche's pre-Zarathustra publications.  At issue is ultimately the way in which Nietzsche understands Modernity, which is to say the debate on 'civilization' and 'culture' in late-Modern philosophy, which especially includes the meaning of science and technology for Nietzsche.

54: Friedrich Nietzsche - How Chaos Helps You Find Meaning In Your Life (Existentialism)

Philosophies for Life

In this podcast, we will talk about how chaos helps you find meaning in your Life from the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. Friedrich Nietzsche was one of the main precursors of existentialism and his goal was to pave the way for “Superhuman”, an extraordinary superior and absolutely free man.  Friedrich Nietzsche, in his philosophy, introduces the concept of the Übermensch, or “Overman”. It represents an individual who rises above the ordinary limitations of human existence by rejecting conventional values and creating their own. The Übermensch is someone who recognizes that life has no inherent purpose or predefined meaning but instead of being paralyzed by this realization, they embrace it as an opportunity to define their own purpose. This individual does not rely on external sources of meaning, such as religion or societal expectations, but instead takes full responsibility for their own life and the values they choose to live by. The Übermensch uses chaos as a crucial tool in this process. Chaos, in Nietzsche's view, is not something to be feared or avoided; instead, it is a source of potential and creativity. And so, they embrace the chaos of life - its unpredictability and uncertainty - as an opportunity to forge new paths and define their own purpose. By engaging with chaos in this way, the Übermensch lives authentically, finding meaning through their actions and choices in a world that offers no easy answers. We all encounter chaos, whether internally or externally, and in this video, we'll explore how chaos can help us find meaning in our own lives from the philosophy of Frederick Nietzsche. So here is how chaos helps you find meaning in your Life, according to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche -  01. Countering Nihilism 02. Connecting Us to Our Instincts and Passions 03. Disrupting the routine 04. Unleashing Creativity 05. Living with Intention and Appreciation I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope that this wisdom on how chaos helps you find meaning in your Life,  from the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche will be helpful in your life.  Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher, poet, essayist, and cultural critic. He is considered to be one of the most daring and greatest thinkers of all time. His writings on truth, morality, language, aesthetics, cultural theory, history, nihilism, power, consciousness, and the meaning of existence have exerted an enormous influence on Western philosophy and intellectual history. He was one of the biggest precursors of existentialism, which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent, determining their own development through acts of will. By his famous words “God is dead!”, Nietzsche moved the focus of philosophy from metaphysics to the material world and to the individual as a responsible person for his own life. Friedrich Nietzsche wrote several books like The Birth of a Tragedy,  Human, All Too Human, The Dawn, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, Twilight of the Idols, The Will to Power, The Antichrist, and many more. His teachings have shaped the lives of many people; from psychologists to poets, dancers to social revolutionaries.

Betrayal is not a fave theme of mine in any media. I really dislike it, but it's so popular! We've talked about this one before but no one really remembers Quackcast 427 so we're having another crack at it! We talk about all the different aspects: political, love, country, loyalty etc and really have fun with it! What I dislike most about the betrayal theme is when a character lies to get into a relationship with another character, or betrays the trust of someone they're in a relationship with. It's like nails on a blackboard to me, and yet it's done all the time so it must be entertaining and popular to other people? Another one I really dislike is when a character is betrayed by their team or their friends: people they trust all suddenly turn on them. I really hate that, it can feel very shocking and horrible. Betrayal by an organisation, a country, or superiors is also pretty popular but I don't think that approach is so bad because it usually reflects how people feel rather than a personal attack. Take Rambo for example: in that his country betrays him, but we all understand that it's a parable about how Vietnam war veterans were abandoned by their country and not given the support they needed. In my comic Pinky TA I use the “betrayed by superiors” theme, mainly because I was influenced by Ghost in the Shell when I wrote it and that was a popular theme in more serious anime at the time. It's also a good parable for growing into adulthood. Have you used a betrayal theme? Do you like it, or do you hate it like me? This week Gunwallace has given us a theme inspired by Oswald the Overman in the Lesser Planes of Hell - Starting off cutesy and friendly and pink this tune quickly spirals down into surreal, mind melting weirdness followed by a little bit of Louie Louie on the keyboards just to get us back to feeling in a party mood again! The Hairy Robot A Short Story by Lord Shartly VonShitstainpants Philo Drummond looked at the hairy robot in his hands and felt grumpy. He walked over to the window and reflected on his Overman surroundings. He had always loved the Fog-Shrouded Fortress of Solitude with its motionless, organism laden, modern Moss. It was a place that encouraged his tendency to feel lumpy. Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Dr. Hal Owll. Dr. Hal was a brutal muppet with greasy armpits and a chubby new generic appendage. Philo gulped. He glanced at his own reflection. He was a lofty, third, Fermented Watermelon Juice drinker with handsome armpits and beautiful new generic appendages of his own. His friends saw him as an angelic if deadly Ninja Saint. Once, he had even helped a tired toddler cross the road. But not even a lofty person who had once helped a tired toddler cross the road, was prepared for what Dr. Hal had in store today. The mud teased like loving snakes, making Philo happy. As Philo stepped outside and Dr. Hal came closer, he could see the Sauron-like eye beaming out.. "Look Philo," growled Dr. Hal, with an obsequious glare that reminded Philo of brutal puppies. "It's not that I don't love you, but I want secret world peace formula. You owe me 2766 shekels." Philo looked back, even more happy and still fingering the hairy robot. "Dr. Hal, I am your cousin and your brother," he replied. They looked at each other with apathetic feelings, like two glamorous, graceful goldfish rampaging at a very greedy St Swithen's Day, which had Death Metal music playing in the background and two friendly uncles stage diving to the beat. Philo regarded Dr. Hal's greasy armpits and chubby new generic appendage. "I don't have the funds ..." he lied. Dr. Hal glared. "Do you want me to shove that hairy robot in another hairy place where the sun don't shine?" Philo promptly remembered his lofty and third values. "Actually, I do have the funds," he admitted. He reached into his pockets. "Here's what I owe you." Dr. Hal looked dopey, his wallet blushing like a stingy, splendid statue. Then they both came inside for a nice drink of Fermented Watermelon Juice. THE END Created on 10th April 2024. Auto Praise for The Hairy Robot "I feel like I know Philo Drummond. The Meaning of the "Overman [Übermensch]" in Nietzsche

Talk of Nietzsche is almost always synonymous with talk of the "Overman [Übermensch]," and so what I do in this discussion is introduce a number of the most definitive themes in Nietzsche's thought by way of an introduction to the Overman in his thought.  To achieve this goal, I begin with the importance of Goethe's Faust for Nietzsche, and then I canvass such diverse but thematic things pertaining to Nietzsche's thought as Homer, Greek tragedy (Aeschylus and Sophocles in particular), the so-called "death of God" or nihilism, and the confluence of the political ideals of the Modern Enlightenment with what we call "technology."  I show how all these things come together for Nietzsche and explain how his concern with a seemingly inexorable and impending planetary dominance of a single technological nation-state led him to place at the very heart of his own deeply political project an enormous emphasis upon the differences of human types, their existence in "culture" as it presently is, and the possibility that they could become something much more noble from within experimentally new understandings of "culture" ushered in according to his understanding of philosophy and its new ranking and ordering of the most defining values by which man orients all life.

The ever-memeable, often misunderstood, always compelling Friedrich Nietzsche might be best known for declaring “God is dead,” but it doesn't mean he lived without beliefs, faith, and convictions. Join Dorion and Tom as they go deep with the rebel prodigy who urges us to become who we think we are by embracing suffering, rejecting absolute truths, and celebrating our individual creativity and expression. (Not what you'd expect from a renowned nihilist, is it?) Topics discussed: Why and how to welcome boredom and despair Insights into his core concepts, including the ideals of the Übermensch (or Overman) and the Will to Power, and why nefarious actors, notably the Nazis, misappropriated them How the Greek Gods Apollo and Dionysus can help us understand the inherent struggle of life: reason and rational thinking vs. feeling and intuition The joys of embracing your fate (“Amor Fati”) — both the good and the bad — to affirm life Nietzsche's take on morality (Hint: it's not what others say/do/impose; it's an inside job) The secret to a happy marriage (from this famously never-married philosopher)

This is the trailer of a discussion for the series I'm doing on the entire text of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra (the entire discussion is available on my AthensCorner.com website for subscribers).  At issue in Zarathustra's speech here is everything encompassed in the phrase "the transvaluation of all values" (or "the revaluation of all values").  That is to say that this speech by Zarathustra marks the beginning of Nietzsche's experiment as a political founder in postmodernity.  I emphasize how the issue of Zarathustra's understanding of "the hinterworldly" is the question of the possibility of another "Enlightenment," and it is precisely this question that constitutes the ultimate status of the teaching on the Overman in the text.  Specifically, this speech by Zarathustra is the true beginning of the possibility of "Enlightenment," which is itself the possibility of the Overman.  Accordingly, it marks the true beginning of Zarathustra's fundamentally political project, which is to say the possibility of what man as such can become.

This is the trailer of the full recording of a discussion for the series I'm doing on the entire text of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra in philosophy on my website AthensCorner.com.  At issue here is Zarathustra's new beginning after his initial failure.  He has become an insurgent in order to achieve his political and, in fact, planetary, project of the Overman.  Here we see his new rhetoric on display, and so the emphasis is not only upon what Zarathustra reveals but also and especially what he hides from his audience as he tells them what is required to become his "brother."

The Übermensch, or Overman, is the one who willingly accepts the challenge of eternal recurrence and lives in such a way that they would be content to relive their life, with all its complexities and imperfections, over and over again. This concept serves as a powerful philosophical tool for self-examination, self-improvement, and the creation of one's values and meaning in life. Most of us have received twelve or more years of “education.” But why did we go to school? What is the purpose of education? And is there a difference between schooling and education? We argue that there is a difference, and in fact, education is more closely related to discipleship than schooling. If that is the case, then can we even call the twelve-plus years of learning we underwent an education? Today Darrow Miller and guest Christian Overman unpack their book, Don't Let Schooling Stand in the Way of Education: A Biblical Response to the Crisis in Public Education. Crisis is not hyperbolic, and as the church, we urgently need to understand the theology of education.Episode Landing Page with transcript, key quotes, and links to go deeper!Disciple Nations Alliance Website

Thus Spake Zarathustra - A Book for All and None by Friedrich Nietzsche audiobook. Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a nineteenth-century German philosopher. He wrote critical texts on religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy and science, using a distinctive German language style and displaying a fondness for aphorism. Nietzsche's influence remains substantial within and beyond philosophy, notably in existentialism and postmodernism. Thus Spake Zarathustra (Also sprach Zarathustra), is a work composed in four parts between 1883 and 1885. Much of the work deals with ideas such as the 'eternal recurrence of the same', the parable on the 'death of God', and the 'prophecy' of the Overman, which were first introduced in The Gay Science. Described by Nietzsche himself as 'the deepest ever written', the book is a dense and esoteric treatise on philosophy and morality, featuring as protagonist a fictionalized Zarathustra. A central irony of the text is that the style of the Bible is used by Nietzsche to present ideas of his which fundamentally oppose Judaeo-Christian morality and tradition.
