On tonight's program: So Florida lawmakers decided to go home for at least a week. We'll delve into what happened; More open government exemptions came out of this year's lawmaking session; We hear from the former Florida Democratic Party rising star who suddenly left the party to blaze his own trail; When it comes to Florida's medical malpractice laws, some are arguing that old laws aren't necessarily good laws; Despite big cuts in federal help, Florida's regional food banks could be making that up – and then some – with extra help from state government; And once again, Florida finds itself on the cutting edge of culture….more and more backyards are foregoing lawns and ornamental flowers for tropical fruit trees.
The GOP candidates in two special congressional elections in Florida won on Tuesday, but with much slimmer margins than the incumbent Republicans won by in November. Nikki Fried, the vibrant chair of the Florida Democratic Party, joins me, Jack Hopkins, to discuss her trailblazing journey through politics. With a unique upbringing of parents from opposing political parties, Nikki stands out with her independent approach to universal issues like reproductive healthcare and cannabis legalization. Together, we navigate her insights into these critical topics, delving into her personal stories and bipartisan experiences that emphasize solutions over party lines. Our conversation takes a deep dive into the cross-section of cannabis advocacy and criminal justice reform. I reflect on my own transition from a lucrative commercial litigation career to serving as a public defender, driven by a commitment to addressing social justice and economic disparities. Nikki and I explore the systemic challenges faced by minority groups, especially concerning drug-related offenses, and the potential of normalizing cannabis to create broader economic opportunities and reform within the justice system. The episode further examines Nikki's groundbreaking role as the first female Commissioner of Agriculture in the South, her advocacy for mental health support, and critical assessments of political figures like Governor Ron DeSantis. Will this generation under Biden remember the banning of TikTok? Will they remember a time when there are Republicans who tell you where to get their news because they have been bought off by Facebook? I will remember. Maybe they will remember an era where they were hated and where children were unwanted. And maybe, the people being forced to grow up under the corrupt and satanic Figurehead will remember a brave group of young girls who took a stand against the lie of transgenderism. I know I will. What does God's Word say? 2 Corinthians 4:4 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.2 Corinthians 11:14 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.Episode 1,565 Links:NYU Prof on America's Youth Being Failed by the Older Generation: 'They are P*ssed Off' - "People are opting out of America. It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent developments at the Supreme Court after new oral argument were read earlier this week. Then, they speak with Rebecca Burns, author and journalist based in Georgia, to discuss her recent piece in The American Prospect entitled "Against The Wind." First, they run through updates on yesterday's primaries, Trump's strong polling out of Georgia and North Carolina, Blinken's most recent visit to the Middle East, Biden's Israel policy, Congress' budget, housing, and crime, before diving deep into Jared Kushner's recent comments on the “valuable” “waterfront property” of Gaza that he recommends Israel capitalize on. Mark Joseph Stern then joins, diving right into the recent insane judicial debacle that has been the handling of Texas' SB-4 – essentially declaring full control over immigration services – by the notoriously right-wing Fifth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the US, walking through the Fifth Circuit's administrative stay on the decision in an attempt to prohibit SCOTUS from overturning it, and SCOTUS' eventual decision to legally uphold the lower courts' stay while also denouncing the further use of it, resulting in the Fifth Circuit reversing itself, with no real culmination to the issue. Next, they look at Murthy v. Missouri, an attempt by Missouri's and Louisiana's Attorneys General to abuse Missouri's single-judge division by submitting a suit with major federal implications on the Government's ability to converse with social media companies, before wrapping up with SCOTUS' blanket disapproval of the case, and what it will mean for the future of single judge divisions. Rebecca Burns then walks Sam and Emma through the emergence of the anti-wind movement as a product of the climate-denial movement's shift towards tactics of delay, successfully capitalizing on misinformation and the NIMBY movement to mobilize even progressive communities against wind-based renewable energy projects. Wrapping up, Burns parses through the evolution of this movement, coming to fruition in opposition to Biden's climate agenda, the major misinformation that it has capitalized on, and how it has successfully worked to delay his major policy victories. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma walk through the major results from yesterday's elections, including the Florida Democratic Party losing multiple mayorships in Democratic strongholds and the setup for Ohio's senate race, before parsing through GOP candidate Bernardo Moreno's recent statements dancing around his anti-reproductive rights platform, and what could be in store for the Senate if the GOP wins a majority in November. Donald Trump's major financial penalties cause right-wing nutsos to panic, Lynn from California dives into the story of Nex Benedict and the state of trans wellbeing in the US, Randy from Virginia grapples with alienation and electoral politics, and Kowalski from Nebraska gives updates on agriculture and more. They also parse through the insane story of a GOP state senator's sexual harassment on the floor of Nebraska's unicameral legislature, plus, your calls and IMs! DeSantis launched the 60 day session with a speech that touched on issues like immigration, education, and law enforcement, and appeared pitched to primary state voters as much as Floridians. The speech sets the stage for a legislative session where lawmakers will tackle issues like health care, the environment, and education, even as DeSantis continues his presidential campaign, vying to be the Republican nominee to challenge President Biden in November. DeSantis said policies in other states have "sparked an exodus" of residents to states like Florida, which he described as a "refuge for freedom and sanity." Political analyst and retired University of South Florida political science professor Susan MacManus and WUSF politics and environment reporter Steve Newborn join host Matthew Peddie to discuss the speech, the response from the Florida Democratic Party, and what's ahead for the legislative session.

KILLING DEMOCRACY IN FL & OH; DIGITAL DERANGEMENT; POEMS FROM THE HEART GREEP zoom #161 begins with WENDI LEDERMAN & CAROLINA AMPUDIA reporting on the Florida “Democratic” Party decision to cancel its presidential primary. This astounding, unprecedented attack on electoral democracy accompanies a concerted attempt by the Republican Party to kill a popular referendum meant to preserve the right to abortion. Despite having gathered more than 1.4 million signatures, Florida's right wing is working overtime to deny the public the right to decide. From Ohio, STEVE CARUSO reports that $4.3 million in fossil/nuclear bribes have found their way to the Chair of the Public Utilities Commission, now indicted and on trial. E-mails between CPUC Chair Sam Randazzo and nuclear reactor owner FirstEnergy show an astonishing line of corruption aimed at bailing out Ohio's decrepit fossil/nuke burners. CAMILLA REES then introduces DR. NICHOLAS KARDERAS, author of Glow Kids and Digital Madness as well as a wide range of medical and professional studies on the impacts of algorithms on our brains. Dr. Kardaras gives us a terrifying tour of the devastating impacts of digital addiction—especially when it comes to our children. Among other things, we are exposed to the horrifying impacts sedentary hours in front of a screen can have on us and our kids. These assaults range from depression, anxiety, OCD, psychosis and much much more. The epidemic of social media with zero nuance has ravaged the mental wellness of an entire generation. This “weakening of the American mind” means the demise of critical thinking, creating an emotional brittleness and a “Stockholm Syndrome” that makes us love the tech oligarchs who imprison our narrowing minds by deliberately spreading dark chaos, the essential ingredient for fascism. MIKE HERSH, LYNN FEINERMAN, DR. NANCY NIPARKO, JUSTIN LEBLANC, STEPHEN KAISER, DONALD SMITH, DAVID SALTMAN, ERIC LAZARUS, MYLA RESON add to our fond farewell to 2023. As that happens, RON LEONARD helps us dedicate ourselves to preventing fascism in 2024. We end with the brilliant, moving poems of Mimi German, hoping she'll become our very own poet laureate. See you then!!

In 2009, Chris focused on planting roots in Tallahassee with his growing family and started with Leon County Schools, but he never gave up his soccer dreams. After reading an article about a local club in New York, he wondered, “Why not here?” Now in year five, the Tallahassee Soccer Club has built a strong community of players, fans and supporters who loves the other “football” and our Battle Lions.
Hell yeah! Democrats and progressives simply crushed it from coast to coast on Tuesday night, so co-hosts David Nir and David Beard are devoting this week's entire episode of "The Downballot" to reveling in all the highlights. At the very top of the list is Jacksonville, where Democrats won the mayor's race for just the second time in three decades—and gave the Florida Democratic Party a much-needed shot in the arm. Republicans also lost the mayor's office in the longtime conservative bastion of Colorado Springs for the first time since the city began holding direct elections for the job 45 years ago.But it doesn't stop there. Democrats held a critical seat in a special election for the Pennsylvania state House to preserve their one-seat majority in the chamber. The party's left flank also had a strong showing in Pittsburgh's Allegheny County, nominating an outspoken progressive for county executive and defeating an anti-reform incumbent for district attorney. New Hampshire Democrats, meanwhile, romped in a special election for their own state House, a positive sign for their chances of taking it back in 2024—if not sooner.Transcript to come.
Joan Walsh has been writing about politics longer than I've been covering them on a daily basis. When I moved over from the music radio world, Joan was editor at Salon.com. We saw her regularly on MSNBC back in those days, then over on CNN, and we're now reading her at The Nation. I knew we had a lot in common, but it wasn't until I read her column in The Nation following the opening night of Bruce Springsteen's current tour with the E Street Band in Tampa, just two months ago. I knew she was a fan, but didn't realize that she's up there with me in terms of Springsteen fandom. But she is. And since Bruce is in the middle of what might be the final E Street Band tour (I couldn't help but shake that feeling after seeing the show here in Hollywood FL a few days after the opener), I invited Joan on the show ... to talk Bruce. And today is the perfect day to do so, as tonight, in New Jersey, they wrap up the first US leg of the tour.... They begin the European leg in Barcelona Spain two weeks from tonight... then back for the second US leg starting at Wrigley Field in Chicago on August 9.... Of course, it's been a while since Joan Walsh was on my show, and there's so much happening in the world outside of music, so you know we will go there too. But first, the governor of Floriduh MoRon DeathSentence signed a 6-week abortion ban into law last night (literally, at 11pm). It's all sickening. So I'm joined at the top of the show by Nikki Fried, newly elected chair of the Florida Democratic Party!

HE FEDS HAVE ATTACKED INDEPENDENT CAMPAIGNS; THE RABBI CELEBRATES THE EARTH At GREEGREE #125 Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party's 2016 Presidential candidate, schools us in how the Federal Elections Commission protects America's duopoly. Stein is being PERSONALLY sued by the FEC for an independent campaign dating to seven years ago. It's an astounding story of fascism in action with serious implications for grassroots campaigns going forward. RAY MCCLENDON of the Georgia NAACP and co-convenor JOEL SEGAL confirm the need to transform how we connect with grassroots donors and volunteers to challenge the duopoly's unyielding power. “We need publicly financed elections, period,” says Segal. With Stein's terrible experience as background, the FEC must be changed to a non-partisan operation. “It's all about the oligarchy,” says Stein. TATANKA BRICCA tells us about Exxon now pouring trillions of dollars into Swiss “non-profits” to hide their money while promoting fossil/nuclear fuels which destroy the Earth. We then hear from CAROLINA AMPUDIA about the fight for progressive policies within the Florida Democratic Party. WENDI LEDERMAN tells us about the fight over privatization of water in the Sunshine State. LORENZO CANIZARES updates us on the situation in Peru. LINDA SEELEY from the San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace tells us of the horrendous licensing scams being pulled at the Diablo Canyon atomic reactors. RABBI ART WASKOW then takes us into a brilliant, fascinating tour of the destruction of Atlanta's forest land along with the horrific murder of a young eco-activist with no less than 13 bullets. Art is a long-standing activist based in Philadelphia who has joined radical Judaism with ecological protection. This broadcast is happening on the Jewish holiday, “the New Year of Trees...a fount of pleasure, of joy…” and much more. His lifelong career has moved thousands of activists around the world, both within and outside the Jewish community, working for peace, social justice, protection of the Earth, an end to racism and anti-semitism and much more. Art's visit is punctuated with great comments by RON LEONARD, MYLA RESON and many more. This is a fantastic, uniquely wonderful gathering. Don't miss it!!!
Gov. Ron DeSantis is bringing his war on woke to New College of Florida with the appointment of six new board members who are tasked with transforming the progressive school into a conservative institution. Journalists Antonio Fins, John Kennedy and Zac Anderson discuss the governor's latest culture war push, how COVID concerns continue to be at the forefront of DeSantis' agenda and the Florida Democratic Party's leadership turmoil.
The fascist man occupying the Governor's mansion in Tallahassee FL continues his assault on reason and his attempts to turn the state into a theocracy ruled by an authoritarian. Earlier this week, we learned about his move to turn Florida's truly liberal arts college, The New College, from its mission of inclusion, diversity and a place that's become a haven for LGBTQ students to a "conservative" leaning institution modeled on Hillsdale College-- a private Christian liberal arts college in Michigan. And just yesterday, he held a rally-style event with his closest *medical* advisors, spreading misinformation about COVID-19 and the vaccines with his shady anti-vaxxer surgeon general, and another so-called doctor who told the crowd to forget about the vaccine and instead, pray to Jesus.I kid you not.Sadly, Florida does not have a capable, organized Democratic Party to counter such insanity. Luckily there is a group of dedicated progressives working to gain influence over the negligent and embarrassing group of bureaucrats who hold the positions of power in the FDP.Today, I'm joined by Carolina Ampudia, past president of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida who'll explain what's happening with today's Florida Democratic Party
On Today's episode Dr. B.J. Brunious speaks with Kevin Cho Tipton about the future of the Florida Democratic Party, healthcare, how to recruit great candidates and how to mend the fences between marginalized communities. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/we-make-florida/support

The stay is temporary and will last until the court considers a final decision. On Monday, the former president asked the Supreme Court to block the House Ways and Means Committee from accessing his tax returns after it requested six years' worth of Trump's returns as part of an investigation into IRS audit practices of presidents and vice presidents, reports ABC News. Trump accused the committee of seeking his taxes under dubious circumstances, with a petition to the Supreme Court reading "The Committee's purpose in requesting President Trump's tax returns has nothing to do with funding or staffing issues at the IRS and everything to do with releasing the President's tax information to the public." In August, a federal appeals court ruled that the committee would be handed the tax returns, having first sought the returns in 2019. NBC reports that Trump "recently failed to block the request on Thursday when the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals shot down his request to reconsider a unanimous opinion from one of its three-judge panels approving the committee's access to the documents." Trump says that the panel's attempts to get their hands on his returns are purely political. https://hotair.com/john-s-2/2022/11/01/voter-registration-has-been-a-disaster-democrats-have-lost-330000-voters-in-florida-n507245 'Voter registration has been a disaster': Democrats have lost 330,000 voters in Florida Democrats are not poised to do well in Florida next week. In fact, it looks like they may not do well in the state for some time. Since the 2020 election, Dems have lost more than 330,000 registered voters in the state while GOP registrations have surged. The Florida Division of Elections released its voter registration report for the November election, known as book closing, earlier this month. Taken with the reports from the general elections in 2020 and 2018, Republicans and no-party-affiliate voters show a steady increase in voter registration. But from 2020 to 2022, Democrats lost 331,810 voters… News 6 political analyst and UCF professor Dr. Jim Clark says the problem can be laid at the feet of the Florida Democratic Party. The result of this large shift in registrations is that the GOP now has a registration advantage in the state for the first time. As of last month, there were 5.3 million registered Republicans and just under 5 million Democrats in Florida, marking the first time in state history that the GOP will carry a voter advantage on Election Day. As bad as that news is, what’s even worse is who Democrats are losing. Republicans have picked up where Trump left off. More than half of their gains in registered voters can be attributed to the 58,000 new Hispanic voters who checked “Republican” on their forms. Democrats, though, are bleeding support from these communities. The party saw a net loss of more than 46,000 Hispanic voters. The reversal is made more stunning because Democrats entered the election cycle firmly aware of the trend and set out to address it, promising they would have dedicated staff and outreach focused on the disparate Hispanic communities that are scattered across the state… It is also worth noting that Republicans saw a slight but sizable uptick of Black registered voters in the past two years while Democrats lost more than 71,000, a quarter of which came from Miami-Dade. The result of all of this is that Republicans are in a position to win in Miami-Dade County for the first time in 20 years. The party has picked up 11,000 new voters in the county since 2020 while Democrats have lost nearly 58,000 voters over the same time span. On top of the registration advantage, the GOP also has a big money advantage. CNN notes that in 2020 Michael Bloomberg committed $100 million to help Biden win Florida. This year there are no outside benefactors coming to rescue the Democrats. Meanwhile, Gov. DeSantis has raised nearly $200 million. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) political operation reported raising $177.4 million through Sept. 9, breaking the gubernatorial fundraising record without adjusting for inflation, a new OpenSecrets analysis of state campaign finance filings found. His reelection campaign has raised over $31.4 million since January 2021, and Friends of Ron DeSantis, his state-level PAC that is not subject to contribution limits, raked in $146 million since January 2019. The bottom line is that even the Miami Herald doesn’t see much hope for Democrats this year. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/republicans%20predicted-huge-house-win-forecast Majority rules: Republicans predicted to have huge House win in new forecast The Republican Party is set to experience a big win in the House of Representatives come election night, gaining a double-digit edge in the lower chamber of Congress. The GOP needs to have a net gain of at least five seats in the House if it wishes to take the majority, but predictions released on Tuesday indicate that the party may have a 19-seat majority after election night, bringing its total to 236 seats. This estimate is based on if Republican candidates win half of the toss-up races that are in a dead heat, according to Fox News. The majority by the GOP could be bigger or smaller, depending on voter outcome for the party. In a best-case scenario for Republicans, the party would leave election night with 249 seats, while a best-case scenario for the Democratic Party would be for Republicans to have only 223 seats after the election, according to the outlet. The Republican Party's lead in the 2022 midterm House elections can possibly be attributed to its focus on inflation and crime, while Democrats have focused on abortion rights following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade earlier this year. An ABC/Ipsos poll conducted from Oct. 28-29 found that 26% of those surveyed ranked the economy as the most important issue, while 23% reported inflation was the most important. The poll surveyed 729 adults and had a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points. While Republicans are expected to take control of the House, the Senate remains up in the air, as the party only won in 50 of the 100 simulated outcomes of the midterm elections for the Senate, according to FiveThirtyEight. The GOP needs to have a net gain of at least one senator if it wishes to take control of the upper chamber of Congress. The Army’s ambitious climate strategy, which it estimates will cost upwards of $6.8 billion over five years, follows three lines of efforts: installations, acquisition and logistics and training. According to the strategy’s implementation plan, released Oct. 5, $5.2 billion of that will go to the installation line of effort, wherein the service wants to field fully electric non-tactical vehicles and reduce greenhouse gasses. The Army also wants to operationalize 55 microgrids on its installations (20 microgrids by fiscal 2024, 15 more by FY26 and then 20 more in FY27) with a total cost of $1.6 billion. (The training portion is expected to cost far less.) The service is currently working on implementing the first set of those tactical microgrids, which will allow the service to “interconnect” power equipment in an “interoperable and smart way,” Marnie Bailey, power division chief at the Army’s C5ISR Center, told Breaking Defense in an interview this week. She added that the development of the tactical microgrid standard (TMS) has underpinned a lot of the research the Army has been doing in that area. TMS is an interoperability standard that allows devices to plug and play together, and that’s what the Army wants to do with its power systems, Mike Gonzalez, expeditionary power and environmental controls branch chief at the C5ISR Center, added. Over the next year, the Army wants to explore how to do active load management (things that consume power, like electronics) through the use of the TMS, which can monitor the loads and see how much power installations or bases are consuming on a regular basis, whether the facilities are stateside or in far-flung regions. According to the Army’s climate plan, the service plans to field an all-electric light-duty-non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2027 and is aiming for an all-electric non-tactical fleet overall by 2035. The Army wants to reap the benefits of the technologies and, at the same time, make sure the transition to these new concepts are seamless for soldiers. As part of that, the service is engaging in “soldier touchpoints” to get feedback on what is and isn’t working. Those soldier touchpoints are key to making sure the Army doesn’t spend years on stuff that’s not performing in real situations, Gonzalez said. As to how the Army sees in the opportunities space over the next fiscal years coming up, both Bailey and Gonzalez summed it up in three words: intentionality, flexibility and maximizing options. It also opens up opportunities for incorporating things like artificial intelligence in the future for things like controls, Bailey added, but the focus right now remains on implementing the interoperability standards into equipment. https://dailycaller.com/2022/11/01/fed-interest-to-pass-defense-budget/ The Government Is Set To Spend More On Debt Payments Than The Entire Defense Budget Interest on federal debt is set to skyrocket, potentially surpassing defense spending by as early as 2025, CNN reported Tuesday. The federal government made $475 billion in net interest payments in the fiscal year 2022 — which ended in September — up from $352 in fiscal year 2021, according to the Treasury Department. The number exceeds the $406 billion spent on transportation and veterans’ benefits, and is on track to eclipse the roughly $750 billion spent on defense this year between 2025 to 2026, according to CNN, citing financial analytics firm Moody’s Analytics. (‘Reckless’: Obama Economist Tears Apart Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness) “Regardless of who wins the midterms or in 2024, there are really difficult decisions that will have to be made,” Dan White, an economist at Moody’s Analytics, told CNN. “This is really going to handcuff them.” The Federal Reserve has historically kept interest rates low in a bid to encourage economic growth and the purchase of U.S. debt by foreign investors, CNN reported. This contributed to aggressive borrowing campaigns by both the Trump and Biden administrations, which boosted the nation’s debt past $31 trillion for the first time this year, that have “fast-forwarded us almost an entire generation” in terms of debt, White said. With inflation still above 8%, far above the Federal Reserve’s goal of 2%, it is unlikely that the Fed will slow its pace of interest rate hikes this week in a bid to put downward pressure on the economy and slow inflation, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. As interest rate hikes push economic activity down and the cost of interest up, the U.S. might soon be in a position where it struggles to make its interest payments, White told CNN. A recession, which economists consider increasingly likely, would make it even more difficult to make interest rate payments, since governments typically spend more on social programs during recessions, White told CNN. Devastating is the word that best describes the testimony by four police officers who helped protect the Capitol from the insurrectionists on January 6. Although we knew what happened and had already heard from some of these officers, today's testimony was - well- devastating. And really sad. Today, I'll share my thoughts and lots of audio/video from today's hearing. Then we'll check in with Carolina Ampudia, the newly-elected president of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida to tell us about the chair of the Florida Democratic Party publicly dissing the progressive caucus... No wonder we keep losing in Florida.
How can we pursue Christlikeness in an increasingly hostile culture? I'll talk it over with David Harrell, senior pastor-teacher at Calvary Bible Church and author of the book, "Why America Hates Biblical Christianity." Plus: Muslim extremists want to overturn a Florida law protecting Jews against anti-Semitism. Why hasn't the Florida Democratic Party purged these bullies from its ranks? That's next time on Monday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY.
Host and NewDEAL CEO Debbie Cox Bultan talks with Manny Diaz, former Miami mayor and current chair of the Florida Democratic Party, about what it will take to win Florida and his work to push back on restrictive voting legislation.
Today we discuss Biden's first 100 days in office and give him a grade (spoiler alert, he did pretty well), we talk about the census and what redistricting means for Democrats, and we look at the efforts of local Anti-abortion advocates and their push to make Naples a sanctuary city for the unborn. Plus we have our moments of positivity. But before we get into all of that here is some Democratic Party news. First, it is with great sadness that we announce the resignation of our State Committee woman Sara McFadden. Sara has been a huge asset to the local party over the last 5 years. She has run twice for office and made huge strides in a very difficult district, growing the party with all of her efforts both as a candidate and as our State Committeewoman. She will remain on as a Precinct committee person, but she is taking a much deserved break. A huge thank you to Sara for all of her efforts. With Sara's resignation, we have to replace her position and we are excited to announce that Jane Schletweig has agreed to become our new State Committeewoman. Jane is a precinct committeewoman out of Marco, she is Vice-President of the Democratic Women's Club of Marco, and she is the Region 7 Chair for the Democratic Women's Club of Florida. Jane has worked closely with the leadership of the Collier Democratic Party over the last 4 years and we are excited for her to join our leadership team. The Democratic County Chairs Association met for the first time this past month and we had State Party Chair Manny Diaz and Executive Director Marcus Dixon on to update us on all the Florida Democratic Party efforts. They are doing a great job of getting the party back moving in the right direction. They have proposed a annual budget of 12 million dollars, focusing heavily on voter registration and communication. They have budget money to combat what will prove to be contentious redistricting process. They have had to deal with a lot of unforseen issues that have arisen after their election, but they have righted the ship and are pushing forward. Here are the upcoming meetings to put on your schedule. Thursday May 6th @ 6:30 is the Monthly DEC meeting. This is the business meeting of the party, it is open to the public. Tuesday May 11th @7:00 is the monthly meeting of the Democratic Womens Club of Marco. I will speaking at this meeting along with our outgoing State Committeewoman Sara McFadden. We will be discussing the legislative session and the voting trends as seen around Collier County. Monday May 17th @ 6:30 is the monthly meeting of the Collier Democratic Club. Please remember to volunteer and donate. We are an all volunteer organization and we rely on your generosity to maintain the website, produce this podcast, and promote the agenda of the Democratic party through out Collier and Southwest Florida, so please donate a little time or money to our efforts. It is greatly appreciated. Support this podcast

It is a busy Thursday. As usual, Howie Klein will be here in the second half hour of the show. Today, we'll be talking about the insanity that is the Republican Party in the Trump era, and the civil war brewing. The House is voting on removing Marjorie Taylor Greene Q-GA from her committee assignments. It is surreal. We'll start the show with two of my fellow progressive Dems here in South Florida who've been working to transform the Florida Democratic Party from within. Today, they're here to tell us about a bill brewing in the FL legislature (and in state houses nationally) that would criminalize protests. At some point during this busy show, I'll fill you in on the rest of the news...
Republicans in control of Florida’s state government are dealing with a new reality in Washington: Donald Trump is out; Joe Biden is in. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — Trump skipped the inauguration ceremonies and delivered farewell remarks to the crowd before leaving the White House. — Trump spent his last moments as President in Palm Beach County, waving to his new neighbors from inside an armored Escalade after making the final flight on Air Force One. — Florida Democrats didn’t have much to celebrate after the election because they lost seats in both Congress and the state Legislature, but they are happy now that Biden was sworn in. — The new chair of the Florida Democratic Party is vowing to come up with some way to make his party relevant again. — But, for the moment, Democrats like Sen. Gary Farmer of Broward are smiling. Or is that more like a grin? — Coronavirus doesn’t care who’s in charge; it just keeps on killing. Florida added 145 fatalities and almost 12,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. The virus has infected more than 1,600,000 Floridians since the pandemic began. — And finally, a Florida Man who went to jail for trying to free the horses.
The Democrats introduced an article of impeachment against Trump, charging him with inciting a mob of his supporters to carry out a violent attack on the Capitol in a bid to overturn Joe Biden's election victory, also known as insurrection. The Incompetence portion of the program today is dedicated to Floriduh, as the Florida Democratic Party has proven itself to be just that. Today, I'm joined by two guests. First, Brendan O'Connor- author of the forthcoming book, "Blood Red Lines: How Nativism Fuels the Right" - has a new piece in The Nation magazine "A Preview of What's to Come" about the same faction who stormed the Capitol on Wednesday. In the last segment today, I'm joined by Ryler Calabrese, one of the coordinators of Not Me Us, FL and a newly-elected State Committeeman for Leon County FL, who can finally give us the details on the awesome progressive push to take over the Florida Democratic Party. Unfortunately the party establishment had different ideas (thus the Incompetence I in the title of today's episode)...
Florida lawmakers are returning to The Capitol for more than two dozen committee hearings this week. COVID-19 and a multibillion-dollar hole in the budget are big concerns. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — Gov. Ron DeSantis travels to Bay County to check out a faith-based vaccination center that reaches out to seniors by going through their pastors and ministers. — DeSantis is also counting on Publix to fight the virus. After a vaccination pilot program at grocery stores in three central Florida counties, the Governor is ready to expand to other parts of the state. — Seniors now have first shot at the vaccine in Florida, but DeSantis still won’t say who’s next in line and teachers are getting antsy. — As the Governor tries to speed up the vaccination process, the winter surge of COVID-19 continues with more than 12,000 new cases and 111 new fatalities reported in the past 24 hours. — Florida Democrats pick former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz to take over as party chair … replacing Terri Rizzo after the GOP cleaned their clock in 2020. — And finally, two Florida Men: One tried to hide with the trash; the other faces federal charges after Wednesday’s riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Episode 192: By the time you are tuning into the show, Jeff Bezos, one of the great scars on the economic landscape, will have finished his song-and-dance testimony before Congress, during a hearing that mostly focuses on the massive anti-competitive power of the big tech firms like Amazon and Google. But, long before today, Jeff Bezos has always been the poster child for the CEO who doesn’t give a shit about workers and only cares about a single thing: how to become even richer than he is. The man is a scar on humanity. My observations about Bezos leads off the show. I’ll just say right away—the first NAFTA was an abomination, the newer one was just horrendous—and we also have to be clear that, with or without these so-called free trade deals, capitalism marches on and abuses people, as we saw in last week’s episode when I talked about the enslavement of the Uyghurs in China on behalf of the global supply chain of big brands and big companies. A big piece of NAFTA 2.0 was all about improving the lot of workers in Mexico, especially their right to join independent unions. And that ain’t happening. I dig into this with Lori Wallach, the director of Global Trade Watch. When it comes to politics, you need not say much more than “Florida” to get peoples’ temperature up—no pun intended here since it’s also now the center of the COVID pandemic thanks to the state’s completely moronic governor. But, Florida also points up a longer term challenge to be quite conscious of—it has one of the worst state Democratic parties in the country. I talk about the state’s politics with Bob Lynch, a first-time candidate, who is running for the state house partly to be a catalyst for reform of the party’s electoral strategy. On this week's podcast we have the first part of our interview with Dr. Savarese from FGCU Water School where he is a professor of coastal resilience and climate adaptation. In part one of our interview we look at how communities plan for the effects of climate change and what kind of effects are expected here in Collier County. We, as always have our panel discussion where we dive into the Covid resurgence here in Florida. In full disclosure we intended to dive into other topics, such as the environment, etc., but the explosion of cases and growing numbers filling up hospitals around the state and particularly here in South West Florida compelled a longer dive into the numbers. But before we get to that, let's get some party Info out of the way. We have Biden Signs! Are you sick of seeing Trump Signs and Trump Flags in your neighborhood? Are you ready to let the maskless, MAGA Hat Hat Wearing crowd know you are in support of a man who believes in science and listening to experts during a pandemic? You can get your Biden Sign delivered to your house by one of our volunteers for a donation of $10. Go to our website and request a sign today. In an effort to support our candidates, we are putting on Candidate Spotlights so that voters can listen to the candidates and here their plans on how to help their constituents. We have had two spotlights so far with David Turrubiartez Jr. for County Commission District 5 and Laura Novosad for Florida House District 80. Our next event is on Tuesday July 14th at 5:30. You can sign up for this event on our website or on our Facebook Page. Each subsequent week will focus on another candidate so check on our website for those dates and sign up. We will have audio and video of each spotlight available on the podcast and on our website as well. We're excited to announce that we exceeded the match for Marv's Match in only four days and raised nearly $6,000 in donations over the weekend. A huge thank you all of you who donated it will help us get Democrats and non-democrats who realize we need to move in a different direction to the polls this November. Finally, the Florida Democratic Party has their big Leadership Blue gala on July 18th at 6:00 PM with the next President of the United States Joe Biden as the keynote speaker. In his historic 2018 campaign for Attorney General, Sean fought fearlessly for bold policies that put regular Floridians first. Now, as an attorney and civic leader, he's continuing to stand up for working people.Sean Shaw made history in 2018 as the Florida Democratic Party's first African-American nominee for Attorney General. Sean's progressive platform sought to expand rights for consumers and hold fraudsters, corrupt politicians, and special interests accountable. The election results proved the momentum for his candidacy: over 3,000,000 Floridians voted for his bold agenda, more than any other candidate for attorney general in state history.Earlier in his career, Sean was an independent watchdog for the public as the state's Insurance Consumer Advocate — working to protect consumers from price gouging and insurance fraud. Every decision Sean made was centered on what was best for consumers, not wealthy special interests.Elected to the State Legislature in 2016, Sean continued to fight for consumers, and championed equal rights and equal opportunity for all. As an attorney in private practice, Sean fought for victims of the BP Oil Spill, ensuring families and businesses — whose only fault was having an unlucky address — get what they are owed.Today, Sean continues advocating for working people and is respected nationwide as a leader in the fight for economic and social justice. In 2019, he founded People Over Profits, a non-profit organization dedicated to standing against corporate influence and fighting for the rights of everyday people.Sean is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Florida's law school. An attorney at the law firm Vangard Law, Sean lives in Tampa.
Sean Shaw is someone who every single listener should be very familiar with. Sean Shaw is an attorney and a former member of the Florida House of Representatives. In 2018, Sean Shaw made history as the Florida Democratic Party's first African-American nominee for Attorney General. Over 3,000,000 Floridians voted for his bold agenda, more than any other candidate for attorney general in state history. Welcome to the show Sean.
Cruz represents Tampa-area interests before state and local governments. She is a former executive director with the Florida Democratic Party and was named on INFLUENCE Magazine’s list of the 100 most powerful people in Florida politics. Cruz's mother is Democratic Sen. Janet Cruz of Tampa and her partner is Tampa Mayor Jane Castor. Josko previously founded a Tampa-based public affairs firm he led for 15 years, and served in a senior-level position with an international strategic communications firm, where he advised national, state and local Republican candidates. The two talk about how the COVID-19 crisis has actually increased their firm’s business so far as clients look for guidance navigating how various federal stimulus packages will help them weather the storm. Ana weighs in her bird’s eye view of Castor’s challenges guiding her city through the crisis, including her successful efforts to implement a safer at home order countywide. She also tackles the difference between a stay at home-type order and a curfew. Castor successfully fought to implement the former rather than the latter. Todd, meanwhile, talks about his new South Tampa restaurant venture. The restaurant had been slated to open in early April, but that has been put off indefinitely . Ana praises restauranteurs, including her brother, for finding innovative ways to stay afloat during the crisis while still staying safe and serving the community. Special Guest: Ana Cruz and Todd Josko.

President Donald Trump signed a new law providing harsh penalties for animal cruelty. The prime sponsors of the bipartisan bill are Florida men Ted Deutch and Vern Buchanan. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — A new audit says the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is doing a bad job accounting for the people they fly around the state. But FDLE says that doesn’t really matter, they’re not doing anything improper. — Andrew Gillum, who narrowly lost the Governor’s race in 2018, is donating $150,000 to the Florida Democratic Party in an attempt to flip some House seats in districts he carried last year. — A Miami lawmaker is filing the Florida Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, to have businesses make reasonable accommodations for pregnant employees. — Sunrise bids adios to the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season. While it was the fourth worst on record, Florida dodged a bullet this year. — Two Florida women sue a strip club for discrimination after they were refused admission — because they were not with a man.

On Wednesday's Mark Levin show, It’s outrageous that all other news outlets have joined forces with CNN. CNN and Jim Acosta are protecting themselves not freedom of the press. It’s irrelevant that the media is reporting on itself that fellow news organizations are filing Amicus briefs--these are all pseudo events. Notice that none of these other media organizations have filed suit against the White House, they simply signed on to support CNN because they have no case. They wouldn't tolerate Acosta's behavior in their studios and judges wouldn't allow it in their court rooms. CNN and the others need to be reminded that they are there for the American people, to report the news not debate the president. The media no longer reports the news, they create the news and that is not protected by the first amendment. Then, it seems there's no Constitutional Crisis after all, as the White Office of Legal Counsel has concluded that the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as Acting Attorney General is in fact legal, Constitutional, and in compliance with federal law under the Vacancies Act. Also, CNN’s Jake Tapper’s demanded evidence of voter fraud in Florida. Here’s his evidence - the Florida Department of State has asked federal prosecutors to investigate altered election documents tied to the Florida Democratic Party. Why wasn’t this story broken on CNN? Because CNN’s not investigating. Finally, Michael Avenatti was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Dept for alleged felony domestic violence as reported by TMZ entertainment news. Learn more about your ad choices.
