Have a question you want answered? Submit it here! What if the digital world was costing us more than we realized? In this episode, we sit down with Chris Martin, an insightful author who has navigated the depths of social media's real costs. Chris shares his journey of writing a thought-provoking book during the pandemic, drawing from his rich experiences in social media roles at Lifeway and Moody Publishers. Together, we explore how his upbringing in a tech-savvy household shaped his perspectives, and what compelled him to question the societal impact of social media so deeply. Our conversation takes a fascinating turn as we ponder how media critic Neil Postman might critique today's digital landscape, especially from a Christian viewpoint. We chart the evolution of the social internet, reminiscing about AOL trial disks and MySpace days, while unpacking how modern platforms have shifted societal norms toward valuing affirmation over truth. The discussion extends to the ethical implications of social media's addictive designs and their effects on mental health, illustrating a nuanced portrayal of our digital lives. As we peer into the future, the concept of the metaverse emerges, raising questions about the balance between virtual and authentic human connections. Chris and I discuss the potential for technology to both enhance and hinder intimacy, while considering society's possible rejection of tools that fail to deliver on meaningful interactions. Through reflections on Bo Burnham's creative critiques and personal anecdotes, we encourage listeners to prioritize offline experiences and nurture real-life relationships. Join us on Twitter as we continue this important dialogue and explore the themes of Chris Martin's book, "Terms of Service: The Real Cost of Social Media."Your Host: Kimberly Beam Holmes, Expert in Self-Improvement and RelationshipsKimberly Beam Holmes has applied her master's degree in psychology for over ten years, acting as the CEO of Marriage Helper & CEO and Creator of PIES University, being a wife and mother herself, and researching how attraction affects relationships. Her videos, podcasts, and following reach over 500,000 people a month who are making changes and becoming the best they can be.

Recently, our friend Chris Martin, author of the book “Terms of Service: The Real Cost of Social Media”, said that our kids are spending so much time online, that social media is likely the greatest force of discipleship among the teens in our homes and churches. He offers these three suggestions on how to reclaim our God-given roles as those called to disciple our kids. First, we have to be willing to change our own habits. The average social media user spends about two and a half hours a day on social media. That's not just our kids. That's adults as well. Make sure you deal with your own bad habits before you address those of your kids. Second, we need to emphasize the importance of living life off-line. We must teach them that the best life is away from social media feeds and screens. Kids who experience this for the first time know it to be true. And finally, we must model what it means to be the embodied church. We need to involve our kids in all aspects of our church life, including corporate worship.

Chris Martin wrote a book on social media, not to scare us—okay, scare us a little—but to make us ask this question: "Do we use social media or are we being used by it?" His book, Terms of Service: The Real Cost of Social Media out in February asks this question and many more that we need to ask and answer. Chris, husband and father of a two-year-old Magnolia, formally with Lifeway marketing, now works as content editor of Moody Publishing. He wrote Terms of Service to educate us as to how we can continue to use it for good without begin trapped in its manipulative clutches, while enjoying the benefits of something in our culture that is not going away. His legacy is delightful--listen to the end. You will be encouraged, I guarantee. Am I finding my worth in the number of my Facebook likes? The more Facebook flourishes as a force in social media, the less that people flourish. Will we allow Social Media more power than it deserves—like allowing it to define our worth, something that has been settled by God and His pursuit of us? Will we use Social Media for good instead of it using us? Chris mentions a great resource--ask your questions about faith here: BibletoLife.com You may not have a question, but a friend or family member does so pass it along! Episode Notes Chris Martin, author of Terms of Service: The Real Cost of Social Media, says social media has become so pervasive that not even non-users can fully escape it. He joins Dr. Keith Plummer to talk about how social media is influencing how we think and feel about life in largely negative ways and—most importantly, what Christians can do to resist. His is not a call to totally reject social media but rather, a call to greater awareness, intentionality, and wisdom.

Social media is undoubtedly a hot topic in the world today—in both secular cultures and our churches. So what does that mean for us as Christians? Should we embrace all social media has to offer or treat it as something that opposes our beliefs? Today, we're talking with Chris Martin, who has spent more than a decade in digital and content marketing for businesses like Lifeway Christian Resources and Moody Publishers. His recently released book, Terms of Service: The Real Cost of Social Media, sheds light on how social media is a dominating force in our lives, how it affects us in ways we don't even realize, and why we need to be cautious about how we engage with the internet. We'll talk about how to live wisely while still engaging in social media. Plus, we'll also talk about how we can use social media as a positive medium to reach the lost and how churches can benefit from spreading good news across these outlets. You've probably seen more than a few memes poking fun at progressives for declaring Twitter's sale the apocalypse. Conversely, some conservatives seem to think Elon will usher in the kingdom of God... or at the very least usher Trump back on to his ex-favorite platform. We're all wondering: are Elon's proposed changes the path to paradise or hell? To help us unpack that question, Patrick interviews Chris Martin, a leading Christian expert on social media, and the author of Terms of Service: The Real Cost of Social Media. He offers a sober, cautiously optimistic take on what might happen. This is a conversation you don't want to miss.Ok, truth time... Did you like this episode? Tell us by leaving a rating or review!

Halfway There | Christian Testimonies | Spiritual Formation, Growth, and Personal Experiences with God

Chris Martin is an editor at Moody Publishers and a social media, marketing, and communications consultant. He writes regularly in his Substack newsletter, Terms of Service, and is publishing a book by the same name in February. Today, Chris shares how he was led into ministry, got a job working in publishing, and why he thinks social media does more harm than good. We have an extensive conversation about what social media is doing to us, common misconceptions, and what we can do to think more critically about it. Every Christian should be asking and seeking answers to these questions. Chris' story reminds us that God often leads through our circumstances to the exact place we need to be. Listen to Chris' story now! Stories Chris shared: Growing up in a Christian family in Indiana Thinking of faith in very transactional terms as a child The Sunday School teacher who led him to Christ Choosing to go to Taylor for college The intervention his friends staged to go into ministry How having theological debates shaped him Not getting a scholarship to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Getting a job in social media and going to seminary The car accident that gave him a sense of reverence for the Lord Coaching authors on how to use social media How social media is shaping us Great quotes from Chris: I want you to steward your gifts better on the internet. Even though I'd grown up in church, I'd never been taught theology. Man created social media to serve man; but man has come to serve social media. Social media are not neutral tools that can be used for good or evil.
