Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S49) Talha's رضي الله عنه sons, Musa and Imran (r.h) pledge allegiance to Ali رضي الله عنه. Ali رضي الله عنه performs the Janazah for both Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم. Both blessed souls seem to have been buried together in Basra. Ali رضي الله عنه recited Surah [15:47] at their graves and recalls the words of the Messenger ﷺ: “Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم will be my neighbours in Paradise”. Some ignorant people falsely claim that Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم died in rebellion. The scholars (r.h) refute such claims: The Messenger ﷺ called Talha رضي الله عنه a living martyr, proving he cannot die in rebellion. The Messenger ﷺ says the killer of Zubayr رضي الله عنه will be in Hell. (Thus Zubayr رضي الله عنه is on the truth). Hasan al-Basri (r.h) said that the Companions رضي الله عنهم were there, present. We were not. Thus we do not speak about any differences they had. We do not add our own theories. May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى be well pleased with all the Companions of the Messenger ﷺ. Indeed, He (سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى) is.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S44) Ali رضي الله عنه en route Kufa heard that Aisha's رضي الله عنها force was marching. He رضي الله عنه said: “I am being tested with Aisha رضي الله عنها, the most obedient of all human beings. With Zubayr رضي الله عنه, the toughest. With Talha رضي الله عنه, the most genius and with Ya'la رضي الله عنه, the most cooperative”. Ali رضي الله عنه and his force reach Rabadah, an area ~150 miles east of Madinah. This is the place Abu Zharr رضي الله عنه was buried. Ali رضي الله عنه had ~900 men. He رضي الله عنه sends men to Kufa, to get some more people recruited. The governor of Kufa was Abu Musa al-Ashari رضي الله عنه. Only when Ammar Ibn Yasir and Hasan Ibn Ali رضي الله عنهم were sent did the people agree to join. ~7,000 men joined Ali رضي الله عنه. Another ~2,000 joined from Basra. Ali's رضي الله عنه forces were now ~12,000. Ali رضي الله عنه did not want a fight to break out. Ali رضي الله عنه says: “Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم will be martyred, and the Kufans will follow us in even greater numbers”. Abdullah Ibn Abaas رضي الله عنهم said Ali رضي الله عنه could not have known this; the Messenger ﷺ must have told him all those years prior! May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى be well pleased with our mother and our mawla.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S45) Peace talks: Neither our mother nor our Mawla رضي الله عنهم wanted bloodshed. Ali رضي الله عنه sends Ka'ka رضي الله عنه to speak in Aisha's رضي الله عنها camp. Ka'ka رضي الله عنه mentions it's dangerous for Aisha رضي الله عنها to continue pursuing the rebels, she may be attacked by other tribes, including the tribe of Harkoos, which was Banu Sa'ad. He was the one rebel that survived from the prior clash. Both parties agreed to the terms, and peace was made. However peace was the last thing the mischief mongers wanted. They planned to launch inside attacks on either side, to blame eachother and thus begin a battle. This was executed successfully. Talha رضي الله عنه realised the rebels had ulterior motives. He رضي الله عنه called out: “Woe to you. You are like moths to a flame. Greed is killing them!”. [i.e talking to the rebels].
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S46) The battle of the camel: The battle took place on a Friday, the 16th of Jamada al-Thaani, 36 A.H, in az-Zabuka, an area near Basra. The battle was fought in 2 parts. The first part, from dawn till midday, was lead by Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم. This was the first civil war in our history, still the Companions' رضي الله عنهم nobility shines brighter than the sun: both sides were lead by people promised Paradise. They called out not to kill those that flee, do not kill the injured etc, to minimise bloodshed. It had been ~33 years since Uhud, the day that belonged to Talha رضي الله عنه, the living martyr. He رضي الله عنه now supplicated for martyrdom.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S47) Zubayr رضي الله عنه tried to reconcile the people, but it did not succeed. He رضي الله عنه left. Talha رضي الله عنه also left. He رضي الله عنه was hit by an arrow. It pierced his knee and was a fatal blow. One report mentions Talha رضي الله عنه was taken off the field and was treated, however he was martyred due to excessive blood loss. Another report states Talha رضي الله عنه was martyred on the field; this narrative is weak but is more favoured as it reconciles with other reports. Ali رضي الله عنه went to Talha's رضي الله عنه body and cleaned his face, then held him in his lap. Ali رضي الله عنه said: “May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى have mercy on you O Abu Muhammad [رضي الله عنهم]. It breaks my heart to see you laying here beneath the stars”. He رضي الله عنه also said: “Tell the killer of Talha [رضي الله عنه] he has reserved himself a place in the hellfire!”. Thus passed away: Abu Muhammad, son of as-Sa'ba [رضي الله عنهم], second cousin and son in law of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, the one named ‘al-Qarinayn', the one whose four wives were sisters of the mothers of the believers رضي الله عنهم, the paired brother of Ka'ab Ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, father in law of Hasan and Hussain رضي الله عنهم, the neighbour of the Messenger ﷺ in Paradise; our exemplar, Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه. May our mothers and fathers be ransomed for him. Zubayr رضي الله عنه was also martyred. He رضي الله عنه was praying when a man cut off his head. Ali رضي الله عنه was devastated and furious upon hearing this. He رضي الله عنه said: “Tell the killer of Zubayr [رضي الله عنه] he has reserved himself a place in the hellfire!”.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S48) There is a false report which claims Marwaan Ibn al-Hakam (r.h) was the one who killed Talha رضي الله عنه. This is not the case. Ibn Arabi (r.h) states that there is no authentic chain supporting this. Ibn Kathir (r.h) said it was someone else who killed Talha رضي الله عنه. Marwaan (r.h) was on the same side as Talha رضي الله عنه, why would he kill him? Marwaan (r.h) was later placed governor of Makkah by other Companions (رضي الله عنهم), would they place an evil doer there? Ali رضي الله عنه praised and spoke highly of Marwaan (r.h) and Marwaan (r.h) praised and spoke highly of Ali رضي الله عنه. It is clear that someone is targeting these blessed souls. Books of history record everything. These poisoned people take texts out of context which are most of the time fabricated and use it to fuel their propaganda. Ali رضي الله عنه had utmost love for Talha رضي الله عنه. When he saw the body of Talha and his son, Muhammad رضي الله عنهم, he was heartbroken. He رضي الله عنه said: “Would that I had passed away 20 years prior”. (I.e in the Khilafat of his blessed son in law, Umar رضي الله عنه).

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S43) The force had gone weeks without being catered for. Now they had Basra, they recharged there. Uthmaan Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه was beaten by a group of misinformed people. When Aisha رضي الله عنها heard of this, she immediately said what have you done? And Uthmaan رضي الله عنه was to be released. The Rawafid claim that it was Companions رضي الله عنهم who beat up Uthmaan Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه - this is completely baseless and a fabricated report! Aisha (a.s) uses her brilliance and writes letters to the major cities to elucidate what happened at Basra. She رضي الله عنها wrote to Shaam, Kufa, Yamamah and Madinah. She رضي الله عنها mentioned that the Khawarij wanted to hold her hostage! Imam Ali رضي الله عنه changes the capital from Madinah to Kufa. Why?: 1) He رضي الله عنه wanted no disrespect to be shown in Madinah, the blessed city. 2) He رضي الله عنه had a large following in Kufa. 3) There was funds in Iraq which could be used to supply war if needed. Ali رضي الله عنه gives his final Salaam to the Messenger ﷺ and leaves Madinah, never to return. How difficult this must have been, his entire life he رضي الله عنه spent with the Messenger ﷺ and now he has to leave…
In this podcast I talk through potential Blank and Double Gameweeks for the first half of the FPL 2025/26 season. Talha
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S38) Ali's رضي الله عنه election to the high post: Madinah was leaderless. Chaos was spread. The time came for Imam Ali رضي الله عنه to become the Khalif. al-Ghaafiqee Ibn Harb, one of the rebel leaders, led Madinah for 5 days upon the martyrdom of Uthmaan رضي الله عنه. The rebels searched for a new leader, so they could get the blame off themselves for the crimes they had committed. The Companions رضي الله عنهم approach Ali رضي الله عنه and say you are the most worthy of Khilafat amongst us. Ali رضي الله عنه called for the allegiance to be done in the blessed Masjid. Ali رضي الله عنه later would say the only reason he became Khalif was out of fear that Islam would diminish.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S41) All of our mothers رضي الله عنهم agreed with Aisha رضي الله عنها that Uthmaan رضي الله عنه needed to be avenged. Her followers were righteous people, Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم said the followers were the best of people. Our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها was the most qualified of the Messenger's ﷺ wives to lead here. The only difference in opinion between our mothers رضي الله عنهم was whether they should go to Madinah or Basra. Although this was a sad time in our history, it boosts our Iman. How? For many words of the Messenger ﷺ were, as always, proven to be true.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S40) Talha, Zubayr, Abdullah Ibn Zubayr and Abdullah Ibn Amir, the governor of Makkah, رضي الله عنهم all joined our the force of our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها. By being on Aisha's رضي الله عنها side, Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم did not break their pledge to Ali رضي الله عنه, for ultimately all parties' goal was the same - avenge Uthmaan رضي الله عنه. It was just executed differently. The force was around 3,000. They headed for Basra, as it was neutral land and most of the rebels were in Madinah. The reasoning was as follows; 1) To avenge Uthmaan رضي الله عنه, and get his killers. 2) To show the true colours of the rebels and expose their mischief. 3) To bring peace between the Muslims. 4) to enjoin good and forbid evil. Aisha's رضي الله عنها leading was symbolic: She being our mother رضي الله عنها was a symbol of peace. When the people see her coming they will stand down and realise the matter is serious and needs to be handled.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S39) The difficulties in avenging Uthmaan رضي الله عنه: No one could have been singled out as the murderer of Uthmaan رضي الله عنه, as many people were involved. There was also not enough witnesses so Ali رضي الله عنه could not make plans to go forward. Talha asked Ali for leadership in Basra, Zubayr asked Ali (رضي الله عنهم) for leadership in Kufa, so they could immediately get vengeance for Uthmaan رضي الله عنه and destroy the Khawarij. Ali رضي الله عنه said he needed time to think about this. Putting it simply; this difference in opinion between how the vengeance of Uthmaan's رضي الله عنه murder should be handled is what caused the civil war to break out between the noble Companions رضي الله عنهم. Today we still discuss this, and these souls are in Firdaus. Our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها very wisely decides to stay in Makkah upon hearing that Uthmaan رضي الله عنه was murdered and that rebels were loose in Madinah…
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S42) The force reaches al-Hubayrah, an area just outside Basra. Messengers were sent calling for the nobles and leaders from the city to help identify the killers of Uthmaan رضي الله عنه. The governor of Basra was Uthmaan Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه, he was appointed by Ali رضي الله عنه. Our mother Aisha (a.s) elucidates the situation to Uthmaan Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه. She رضي الله عنها also sends a letter to Abu Musa al-Ashari رضي الله عنه, who was the governor of Kufa appointed by Ali (a.s). Some people ignorantly claim that nothing good came out of the force that our mother رضي الله عنها gathered. This is false. One of the fruits was such; the killing of Hukaym Ibn Jabala, one of the rebel leaders. All but one of the rebels were wiped out. Talha and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم called out: “We are only here for Uthmaan's رضي الله عنه murderers. If you were not involved then stay away”. Such was the nobility of the Companions رضي الله عنهم. The Messenger ﷺ: “The best of mankind are those who kill them [i.e the Khawarij] or are killed by them [i.e the Khawarij]”.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S36) Ali's son, Muhammad Ibn al-Hanafiyah رضي الله عنهم said his father never spoke ill of Uthmaan رضي الله عنه. Ali رضي الله عنه: “Whoever speaks ill of Uthmaan رضي الله عنه is like the one who tries to stab someone that is behind him, by stabbing though his own stomach!”. Talha رضي الله عنه was of the last to pledge to Uthmaan رضي الله عنه. Uthmaan رضي الله عنه said: “Should you want, I will step down”. Talha رضي الله عنه said no, you will lead and gave Uthmaan رضي الله عنه the pledge. The love between Uthmaan, Ali and Talha رضي الله عنهم was such.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S37) Uthmaan's رضي الله عنه Khilafat lasted 12 years. The first 6 were peaceful, the last 6 was when the fitnah began. The mischief mongers were spreading their propaganda, wanting to destroy Islam from within. The rebels were lead by the following; Abdul Rahman Ibn Udays, Malik al-Ashtar and Hukaym Ibn Jabla. When Talha رضي الله عنه heard of Uthmaan's رضي الله عنه martyrdom he made dua for him, and said may the killers perish! He then recited Surah [36:49]. Talha رضي الله عنه said: “Certainly, Uthmaan رضي الله عنه was innocent”. Uthmaan's رضي الله عنه funeral was so packed, if you threw a stone it would certainly land on someone's head (I.e no space was left free). Talha رضي الله عنه was ~63 when Uthmaan رضي الله عنه was martyred. Uthmaan رضي الله عنه was ~84.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S33) Talha رضي الله عنه sees Umar رضي الله عنه leave his dwelling and entering other dwellings at the dead of night. Talha رضي الله عنه made investigations. Umar رضي الله عنه was taking care of an old, blind crippled woman. He had been doing this for years. Talha رضي الله عنه said to himself: “May your mother [رضي الله عنها] lose and bereave you, O Talha”. Umar رضي الله عنه was in his thoughts, deciding who should succeed him… Umar رضي الله عنه told Abdullah Ibn Abaas رضي الله عنهم that a man must have 4 traits to be a leader; To be strong, but not harsh. To give generously, but not be extravagant. To be lenient, but do not be weak. To be cautious in accounting, but not stingy. Abdullah Ibn Abaas رضي الله عنهم said: “None had these traits except Umar رضي الله عنه”.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S35) With Umar's رضي الله عنه passing, Talha رضي الله عنه was around 51 years old. Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf رضي الله عنه said let us boil it down to three of us. Zubayr رضي الله عنه stepped down and nominated Ali رضي الله عنه. Talha رضي الله عنه stepped down and nominated Uthmaan رضي الله عنه. Sa'ad Ibn Abi Waqaas رضي الله عنه stepped down and nominated Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf رضي الله عنه. The council was long, the decision was difficult. It took Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf رضي الله عنه three days to decide his decision. Abdul Rahman couldn't sleep and tells his nephew Miswar Ibn Mahrama رضي الله عنهم to summon Zubayr and Sa'ad Ibn Abi Waqaas رضي الله عنهم. They discuss for a portion of the night. He then called for Ali, discussed for half the night and then called Uthmaan رضي الله عنهم and discussed till Fajr. The 3 days were up… Everyone gathers in Masjid Nabi ﷺ. The blessed 6 رضي الله عنهم gather near The Messenger's ﷺ pulpit and the senior Companions رضي الله عنهم were at the front. The people were in agreement and Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf رضي الله عنه says to Ali رضي الله عنه that Uthmaan رضي الله عنه shall be the successor.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S34) Umar رضي الله عنه knew one thing about each of the 6 of the 10 promised Paradise رضي الله عنهم which he said a leader must not have…their relationship was like no other. The blessed assembly: Abdullah Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهم asks his father if he is going to appoint a successor. Umar رضي الله عنه replies that The Messenger ﷺ didn't appoint a successor. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه appointed a successor. Abdullah Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه realised his father was not going to appoint a successor… The successor was to be decided by the council of 6, رضي الله عنهم. Abdullah Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه was appointed a referee if there was a 3-3 vote split. Umar رضي الله عنه summons Abu Talha رضي الله عنه and says gather 50 Ansar رضي الله عنهم to also decide between the 6.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S32) Umar رضي الله عنه held Talha رضي الله عنه in high regard. Umar once saw Talha رضي الله عنهم wearing an Ihraam, with a red, clay stained colour. Umar رضي الله عنه asked: “What is this?”. Talha رضي الله عنه replied: “It is my Ihraam. It is permissible”. (Different colours are permissible but white is best). Umar رضي الله عنه replied lovingly: “You are an Imaam to the people. I fear the people [who are ignorant] will imitate you, claiming Talha رضي الله عنه wore red, so we will. Refrain from this from now on”. The Messenger ﷺ prohibited the selling of gold for gold, silver for silver, barley for barley and dates for dates. Exchanging these items when they are of the same value is classed as Riba. One must first sell his item (I.e gold) then use that money to buy another product of gold of the same value. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى knows best. Umar رضي الله عنه: “If the people knew how much love, compassion and mercy I had for them, they'd rip the clothes off my back!”. (I.e they'd take advantage).
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S31) The Messenger ﷺ: “The Dua of my brother Yunus [a.s] is astonishing. The beginning is Taheel, the middle is Tasbeeh, the end is the confession of the lapse…”. Whoever is in debt/grieved and recites the Dua of Prophet Yunus a.s 3 times, will be alleviated from their worries. If you are ill and recite it 40 times, and you die, you will be martyred. If you survive, your sins will be wiped out. Abu Bakr's رضي الله عنه rule was short but super; In 2 years, the apostates were dealt with, the zakat-avoiders were handled, the false prophets were crushed and attacks were launched against the Roman and Persian superpowers. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه crowned off his rule by appointing Umar رضي الله عنه as his successor. Some Companions رضي الله عنهم weren't fully sure that Umar رضي الله عنه should have succeeded, for whilst yes he was a titan amongst men, he was known to be harsh. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه explains why Umar رضي الله عنه was so, and says: “Umar [رضي الله عنه] is the best of creation” (I.e after him of course). The Messenger ﷺ: “I have 2 Ministers in the Heavens, one harsh [Jibraaeel (a.s)] and one gentle [Mikaeel (a.s)]. Both are correct. I have 2 Companions on Earth, one harsh [Umar رضي الله عنه] and one gentle [Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه]. Both are correct”. Talha رضي الله عنه was around 40 years old when Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه passed away.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S30) Talha رضي الله عنه during the reign of the 2 Grand Shaykhs رضي الله عنهم: Umar رضي الله عنه sees Talha رضي الله عنه visibly upset and asks: “Why do I now see you uncharacteristically unkempt after The Messenger's ﷺ passing? Is it because your cousin [Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه] has become the Khalif?”. Talha رضي الله عنه replies: “No. I of all the people would not feel this way!”. Talha رضي الله عنه explains what was bothering him was that The Messenger ﷺ said there is a word that if you recite when you are dying, your soul is removed easily, but Talha رضي الله عنه wasn't exactly sure what that word was. Umar رضي الله عنه said he knew what it was: La Ila Ha il Allah [سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى]. Talha رضي الله عنه says you have spoken the truth, it is now as if a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders. A huge lesson can be learnt from Talha رضي الله عنه: Do not assume when it comes to Revelation. The words of The Messenger ﷺ are not to be taken lightly and one must implement what he learns… Such is our state! What is beloved to us, the Companions رضي الله عنهم didn't care about. What they loved, we treat as light…Talha رضي الله عنه was seen in a state of ‘spiritual depression' over Zhikr - we treat Zhikr as a minor thing. Our depression is exclusive to worldly affairs.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S29) Talha رضي الله عنه did not relate Hadiths. as-Saa'ib Ibn Yazeed (r.h) spent time with Talha, Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf Sa'ad Ibn Abi Waqaas and Miqdaad رضي الله عنهم. He (r.h) said none of them related Hadith, except Talha رضي الله عنه who related about Uhud. During the farewell Hajj, Talha رضي الله عنه had a special honour; when The Messenger ﷺ shaved his blessed head, Talha رضي الله عنه was the one who distributed the blessed hair. (Reports mention also Abu Talha رضي الله عنه). Imam Ali رضي الله عنه: “I have heard with my own ears, The Messenger ﷺ said Talha and Zubayr [رضي الله عنهم] will be my neighbours in Paradise”.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S28) The Messenger ﷺ: “The best of mankind is the one whose age is long and deeds are bountiful. The worst of mankind is the one whose age is long and his deeds are corrupt”. The third Kalimah, the everlasting deeds… Why was Talha رضي الله عنه the one to have these dreams? Beautifully put; he craved martyrdom at Uhud, but lived on ~35 years afterwards! In those years, the works he did were unfathomable! Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى was giving him something greater than martyrdom, a long life full of piety. اَللَّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ. Why are we surprised regarding the works of this man, for The Messenger ﷺ said: “Abu Bakr will be in Paradise. Umar will be in Paradise. Uthmaan will be in Paradise. Ali will be in Paradise. Talha will be in Paradise. Zubayr will be in Paradise. Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf will be in Paradise. Sa'ad Ibn Abi Waqaas will be in Paradise. Sa'eed Ibn Zayd will be in Paradise. Abu Ubaydah Ibn al-Jarrah will be in Paradise”. (رضي الله عنهم)
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S27) Talha رضي الله عنه once led the prayer and after he finished he asked: “O people, I did not confer with you prior. Are you pleased with me leading?”. The people in unison said: “Of course, O selected Companion of The Messenger ﷺ”. Talha رضي الله عنه said: “I heard The Messenger ﷺ say: ‘If a person leads and the people aren't happy with him, the Salah does not go past the [Imaams] ears'”. The Salah is to be led according to the weakest amongst us. The Messenger ﷺ teaches Talha رضي الله عنه how valuable the Fardh are: Talha رضي الله عنه sees 2 men (رضي الله عنهم) in a dream. One of them passed away a year earlier, he was martyred. The second man passed away a year later, in his bed. However, the one who passed away later entered Paradise first (as Talha رضي الله عنه saw in his dream). This was due to how valuable the Fardh is! The man had an extra year of Fasting in Ramadan and his Salah…
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S21) The Messengers ﷺ love for the Martyrs of Uhud: The Messenger ﷺ: “O Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى, how I would have loved to have been with them at the foot of the mountain” (I.e martyred alongside them رضي الله عنهم). The Messenger ﷺ would visit the Martyrs of Uhud annually, so did the Khilaaf e Rashideen (رضي الله عنهم). Some of the blessed Martyrs of Uhud: Musab Ibn Umayr, Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn Haram, Hanzala, Sa'ad Ibn Rabee, Ziyad Ibn al-Sakan, Amr Ibn al-Jamooh, Kharija Ibn Zayd, Yamaan, Thaabit Ibn Waqash, Mukhayreeq and Amr Ibn Thaabit رضي الله عنهم.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S23) The Messenger ﷺ is informed that the Munafiqs were gathering in the house of Suwaylim, a Jew. They were plotting, getting people to not join The Messenger ﷺ for Tabook. The Messenger ﷺ orders Talha رضي الله عنه to burn down the house. This is a separate incident, not to be confused with the ‘Masjid' Diraar incident, which happened after Tabook. Surah [9:107] mentions this so called Masjid the Munafiqs built. They used it to make plans to destroy Islam. The verses then mention Masjid Quba and Nabi (ﷺ) - they are far better than the one built by the Munafiqs.
(S22) Haythuma Abu Sa'ad رضي الله عنهم: another martyr of Uhud. His son, Sa'ad رضي الله عنه was martyred at Badr. Wahab Ibn Kamoos and his nephew al-Haarith Ibn Uqbah رضي الله عنهم. Wahab رضي الله عنه single handedly took out a cavalry headed for The Messenger ﷺ. The Messenger ﷺ gives him glad tidings…Wahab رضي الله عنه is martyred, wearing the best of smiles. His nephew Haarith رضي الله عنه was martyred at Uhud also. Returning to Talha رضي الله عنه: Despite all his severe injuries from Uhud, Talha رضي الله عنه still participated in every campaign during The Messenger's ﷺ lifetime! Umar رضي الله عنه: “Talha رضي الله عنه is a pillar of Islam”.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S26) al-Ahnaf Ibn Qais رضي الله عنه: “Wealth owns you if you don't spend it. You own wealth if you spend it”. Talha رضي الله عنه used to look after his entire tribe, Banu Taym. He would clear their debts, marry off their widows, and take care of orphans. He رضي الله عنه gave our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها an annual amount of 10,000 Dirhams! Sadaqah is rewarded two-fold to family, for not only is it Sadaqah, it is maintaining ties. A glimpse into Talha's رضي الله عنه intimate moments with The Messenger ﷺ: A rakat is missed in Salat, Talha رضي الله عنه informs The Messenger ﷺ of this…
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S25) Qabeesa (r.h): “I saw no one more learned in the Qur'an than Umar رضي الله عنه. He was the most discerning. No one was more generous than Talha رضي الله عنه. He gave without being asked. Muawiya رضي الله عنه was the most forbearing. He is inwardly as he is outwardly. I saw Amr Ibn al-Aas رضي الله عنه. None is gentler or nobler than he. If there was a city with 8 gates, al-Mugheera Ibn Shu'ba رضي الله عنه would figure out how to get out of each one [i.e a sly genius]”. Talha رضي الله عنه: “I feel shy that a man loses hope in me and I let him down”. Abundant Zhikr and Sadaqah: these 2 deeds build a special link with Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى. The Messenger ﷺ: “Love for wealth grows hypocrisy in your heart, just as water grows vegetation”.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S24) A glimpse into Talha's رضي الله عنه generosity: Jihad and generosity are 2 deeds which are of utmost significance. They're even used as a differentiation between the Sahaba رضي الله عنهم themselves. (Surah [57:10]). Talha رضي الله عنه put his effort into both deeds! Talha رضي الله عنه once sold land and earned 700,000 Dirhams. This troubled him all night. He then distributed the wealth and when morning came, it was all gone. The Messenger ﷺ titled Talha رضي الله عنه: “Talha al-Fiyaad”, “Talha the bountiful”. Talha رضي الله عنه, whilst on the campaign of Khaybar, bought a well at the foot of a mountain and slaughtered a she-camel to feed the people. Thus he earned this title. He was titled “Talha al-Jood”, “Talha the generous” at Hunayn. This was the generosity of Talha رضي الله عنه during campaigns, so imagine what he was like during regular times! A smooth sea never made a seasoned sailor…
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S19) Abu Sufyaan (رضي الله عنه) turned his head upon seeing the state of the Martyrs رضي الله عنهم - he did not order this. Abu Sufyaan رضي الله عنه calls out at the base of Uhud: “Is Muhammad [ﷺ] still with you?”. He asks of Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهم as well - even the disbelievers at that time knew of the blessed order. The Messenger ﷺ orders Ali رضي الله عنه to ensure the disbelievers return to Makkah. ~70 men were with Ali, including Abu Bakr and Zubayr رضي الله عنهم. Surah [3:172] praises these men, and that they have an immense reward.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S20) The Messenger ﷺ instructs the Companions رضي الله عنهم to praise Talha رضي الله عنه in poetry. Hasan Ibn Thaabit رضي الله عنه: “After Muhammad ﷺ Talha رضي الله عنه led us all”. Abu Bakr and Umar رضي الله عنهم then recited some poetry in praise of Talha رضي الله عنه. If The Messenger ﷺ has ordered praise of an indivual, we must follow suit and praise him. The Companions رضي الله عنهم stated that at Uhud, Talha رضي الله عنه defended Islam itself! We must show gratitude. Ameer Muawiya رضي الله عنه says to Musa Ibn Talha رضي الله عنهم (Talha's son): “Shall I give you glad tidings?” - “I have heard The Messenger ﷺ say that Talha رضي الله عنه is a man who has fulfilled his vow”.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S18) The last assault at Uhud: with The Messenger ﷺ at the elevated face of Uhud, the disbelievers tried one last attack. Khalid Ibn al-Waleed رضي الله عنه with his force headed towards The Messenger ﷺ. The Messenger ﷺ made a dua: “Let not these people reach us”, some of the Muhajireen (including Umar) and the Ansar رضي الله عنهم went forward and thus the disbelievers retreated. The mutiliation of the Martyrs رضي الله عنهم: Hind رضي الله عنها, at this point not a Muslim, and some others cut off the Martyrs' noses and ears, making necklaces and anklets out of them! She gave Wahshi (رضي الله عنهم) her golden necklace and jewellery for killing Hamza رضي الله عنه. Hind رضي الله عنها takes Hamza's رضي الله عنه liver and chews it but could not swallow it… The Messenger ﷺ is deeply saddened and angered when he sees what was done to his beloved uncle رضي الله عنه.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S17) The Messenger ﷺ: “If anyone wants the pleasure of seeing a martyr walking on the Earth, look at Talha”. (رضي الله عنه). Some reports mention 14 men (رضي الله عنهم) were with The Messenger ﷺ, some say it was 12, 11, 7. There is no contradiction: the numbers differ as when needs rose, some (رضي الله عنهم) broke away and then returned later. There was 7 Muhajireen and 7 Ansar رضي الله عنهم. Abu Talha رضي الله عنه gets drowsy during Uhud: this was a blessed gift sent from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى showing His pleasure. Others رضي الله عنهم felt it too. Abu Talha رضي الله عنه is not to be confused with Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه. Abu Talha's name is Zayd Ibn Sahl رضي الله عنه. He was an elite warrior, Badri, paired brother of Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه, he married Umm Sulaym, Anas's mother رضي الله عنهم.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S15) Talha and 11 men from the Ansar رضي الله عنهم form a ring around The Messenger ﷺ. One by one they step forward to defend The Messenger ﷺ whilst heading towards mount Uhud. All 11 men from the Ansar رضي الله عنهم were martyred. One of these men was Ziyad Ibn al-Sakan رضي الله عنه. The Messenger ﷺ: “On the day of Uhud, I looked to my right and saw Jibraaeel (a.s). I looked to my left and saw Talha [رضي الله عنه]”. The Messenger ﷺ: “Should you [i.e Talha رضي الله عنه] have any difficulties on The Day of Judgement, Jibraaeel (a.s) told me that he himself will come to your aid”. This was due to the aid and defence Talha رضي الله عنه gave to The Messenger ﷺ.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S16) The Messenger ﷺ titled Talha رضي الله عنه: “Talha al-Khayr”. “Talha the Good”. Whenever Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه mentioned Uhud, he said all credit goes to Talha رضي الله عنه that day. Abu Bakr and Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنهم upon seeing The Messenger ﷺ again during the intense battle, rushed to him, ﷺ. The Messenger ﷺ tells them to see to their Companion, Talha رضي الله عنه who was severely injured and lost a lot of blood, but due to their immense love for The Messenger ﷺ they went to him first. Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه uses his front teeth to remove the lodged helmet chain links from The Messenger's ﷺ cheek. He lost both his teeth but this only increased him in handsomeness! Talha رضي الله عنه had fallen into a ditch. He had 70 wounds, from swords, spears and arrows, showing he defended The Messenger ﷺ from all distances. اَللَّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ. Talha's رضي الله عنه hand was paralysed and he lost his index and middle finger. When the other Companions رضي الله عنهم arrived and Talha knew The Messenger ﷺ was now safe, he رضي الله عنه fell unconscious again.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S12) The main body of the Muslims were fighting the main body of the Quraysh. The split group, containing The Messenger ﷺ fought against Ikrimah (رضي الله عنه) and his force. The Messenger ﷺ was in a dangerous position. Amr Ibn Qameeya struck The Messenger ﷺ on the cheek and on the shoulder. The Messenger ﷺ falls into the ditch… Musab رضي الله عنه defended The Messenger ﷺ and fought ferociously, ultimately ending with his martyrdom. Musab رضي الله عنه looked like The Messenger ﷺ in his armour, thus when he was killed it appeared if The Messenger ﷺ was killed - this is how the rumour spread. Nusayba bint Ka'ab رضي الله عنها defends The Messenger ﷺ wholeheartedly…
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S13) ~10 fighters were by The Messenger ﷺ. This includes Nusayba, her husband Zayd Ibn Asim, and their sons Abdullah and Habeeb رضي الله عنهم. Nusayba رضي الله عنها picks up a shield and defends The Messenger ﷺ. When The Messenger ﷺ looked right and left, she was there… Her son, Abdullah Ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهم was the one who delivered the final blow to Musaylimah The Liar - this was vengeance served as Musaylimah was the one who killed Nusayba's other son, Abdullah's brother: Habeeb رضي الله عنهم. Amr Ibn Qameeya, the one who struck The Messenger ﷺ, Musab and Nusayba رضي الله عنهم was later killed by a Ram. He died an excruciating death.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S14) On the day of Uhud, The Messenger ﷺ cursed 3 men, then Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى revealed Surah [3:128] (“You ˹O Prophet˺ [ﷺ] have no say in the matter. It is up to Allah to turn to them in mercy or punish them, for indeed they are wrongdoers”). These 3 men later became Companions رضي الله عنهم. When The Messenger ﷺ was in the ditch, he said: “Forgive my people, for they do not know”. Utbah Ibn Abi Waqas damaged The Messenger's ﷺ lower lip and broke his lower canine. He ﷺ had a deep cut on the shoulder and had 2 helmet links embedded into his cheek. This was an honour for The Messenger ﷺ. Sa'ad Ibn Abi Waqas رضي الله عنه sees Jibraaeel and Mikaeel (a.s) fighting ferociously by the side of The Messenger ﷺ! The false report that The Messenger ﷺ was martyred caused the Muslims (رضي الله عنهم) to react in 4 ways; 1). There was no point in fighting now, The Messenger ﷺ has been killed. Return, regroup and repower at Madinah. 2). They (رضي الله عنهم) regrouped at Mount Uhud. Regarding the first 2 groups, Surah [3:155] and [159] were revealed. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى mentions the short comings of the Companions رضي الله عنهم and that they have been forgiven, and that The Messenger ﷺ should pray for their forgiveness. 3). This group, رضي الله عنهم, upon hearing The Messenger ﷺ was martyred, thought we must fight harder and martyrdom is what is for us now! 4). This group, رضي الله عنهم, didn't split from The Messenger ﷺ thus the rumour he had been killed had no effect on them, as they could see him ﷺ. Included in this group was Talha رضي الله عنه.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S7) Talha رضي الله عنه was of the first of the first to embrace Islam. He was amongst the first 8. A ~15 year old Talha رضي الله عنه embarks on a business trip to Busra, Syria. There, he encounters a Christian monk who says: “Has Ahmed [ﷺ] emerged yet?”. The Monk tells Talha رضي الله عنه to go to Makkah and follow The Messenger ﷺ and to not let anyone beat him to it! It is a tremendous honour! Talha رضي الله عنه returns to Makkah and the people tell him of The Messenger ﷺ proclaiming and that Talha's cousin, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنهم) has followed him. Talha رضي الله عنه embraced Islam at the hands of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. Many of the Companions, including some of the ten promised Paradise (رضي الله عنهم) embraced Islam at Abu Bakr's رضي الله عنه hands.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S8) Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was so instrumental as he was very knowledgeable and generous, thus the people followed him so. It can be said that Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was close to bringing the entirety of the Quraysh into Islam. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه has al-Waleed Ibn Mugheera on the verge of accepting Islam but Abu Jahl intervenes. 19 Verses were then revealed… Nawfal Ibn Khuwaylid, the brother of Khadija رضي الله عنها. He was known as The lion of the Quraysh. He tied up Abu Bakr and Talha رضي الله عنهم to rough them up and give them some harsh words. Thus they affectionately were given the title: “al-Qarinayn” “The Two tied together”. Nawfal was killed at Badr by Ali رضي الله عنه. Our Lion (رضي الله عنه) killed their lion.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S9) Why did Nawfal target Abu Bakr and Talha? رضي الله عنهم. Zubayr's رضي الله عنه father, al-Awaam was the brother of Nawfal (thus the brother of Khadija رضي الله عنها also!). al-Awaam passed away early thus Nawfal was the caretaker of Zubayr رضي الله عنه. When Nawfal found out he embraced Islam he put Zubayr رضي الله عنه in a straw mat and placed fire underneath to choke him. Nawfal told him to leave Islam, Zubayr رضي الله عنه didn't budge, even though he was ~8 years old! Nawfal thus targeted Abu Bakr and Talha رضي الله عنهم as they were the ones who told Zubayr رضي الله عنه of Islam. Talha رضي الله عنه is returning from a business trip and runs into The Messenger ﷺ and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه who were performing the Hijrah! Talha رضي الله عنه dresses them in Syrian garments and he himself goes to Makkah to sort things final. Talha رضي الله عنه performs Umrah when he returns to Makkah despite the dangerous circumstances in Makkah. Zayd Ibn al Haaritha, Abu Rafi, Abdullah Ibn Urayqidh رضي الله عنهم and some other men were chosen to bring The Messenger's ﷺ and Abu Bakr's family رضي الله عنهم to Madinah. Talha رضي الله عنه also aided them in this.
Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S10) The blessed pairing: There are 3 views with regards to who Talha رضي الله عنه was paired with in Madinah; Abu Ayub al-Ansari, Ubayy Ibn Ka'ab and Ka'ab Ibn Maalik رضي الله عنهم. The strongest view is that Talha رضي الله عنه was paired with Ka'ab Ibn Malik رضي الله عنه. Ibn Taymiyyah (r.h) endorses this view. One should stand for his brother when greeting him. Not doing so may cause ill feelings in the heart. The one being stood up for should not feel pride in his heart, if he does then he should request the people not to stand for him. Talha and Sa'eed Ibn Zayd رضي الله عنهم didn't participate in Badr due to being sent out by The Messenger ﷺ to scout out the caravans 10 days prior to Badr. Talha and Sa'eed رضي الله عنهم still recieved spoils from Badr and are classed as Badris.
