In this episode I talk with photographer Ron Jude about his evolving approach to image-making, his connection to place, and how he weaves mystery into his work. We also get into the role of music and sound in his creative process, adding another layer to how he thinks about storytelling. Non-guilty pleasures are also discussed!
Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Corrosion of Conformity and Napalm Death are FINALLY announce to top the festival bills... but it wasn't plain sailing. In fact, it was a series of sleepless nights aboard SS Nightmare which left Gav and James wondering whether "headliners" for events likes Damnation and ArcTanGent are really worth the effort at all? There's also James being accosted at the school gates about his views on Kneecap, a Dragged Into Sunlight boxset and two headline offers from Eyesore Merch and Lou's Brews. We go again, every Thursday morning.

This week we're discussing “NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD,” the latest album by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. For those familiar with the band, this album (and its lengthy and political title) will not surprise you. However, that is far from a bad thing. “NO TITLE…” shows the band as heartbreaking, beautiful, and dynamic as ever. Godspeed rarely disappoints, and this album is no different.Closing track: “GREY RUBBLE — GREEN SHOOTS”Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTube, AppleSubstackWebsite

In this episode, I called an audible and decided to pay tribute to the man I believe was the George Martin of indie rock, Steve Albini. As they say, better late than never. We are really busy with other non-related music works and are shortly getting ready to sell our property in Australia and business here before returning to the UK permanently. Just five bands and musicians are making their debut on Sequences. We hear about the new project by ex-Tangerine Dream member Johannes Schmoelling and sound design luminary Kurt Ader! With their second album, Hydragate, s475e, which composes and produces electronic music combining ambient and “classical” electronic music with progressive elements. The unusually named seven-piece band Godspeed You Black Emperor uses guitars, violins, drums, glockenspiel, etc.; their album is about all of us waiting for the end. Giants of Discovery is a UK electronic artist of Victorian cosmic horror, Greek mythology, and modular soundscapes, with Alex Bell's contribution to Tone Science no 9, polyrhythmic synth sequences dancing in spring reverb tape echo and modern glitches. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a couple of singers who've devoted themselves, in slightly different ways, to keeping traditional music alive: Shirley Collins and Radie Peat. Collins is 88, and she's had a pretty strange and incredible career. She started performing traditional songs in the mid-1950s, and she notably left England in 1959 to travel the United States with Alan Lomax, recording songs and singers in Appalachia and elsewhere that may otherwise have been lost to history. She recorded some incredibly influential records in the '60s and '70s with Davy Graham and, separately, with her sister Dolly Collins. And then Shirley left music entirely. It wasn't until the 2000s that unlikely underground musicians would coax her back to performing: British apocalyptic-folk-industrial band Current 93 were the first, strangely. It wasn't until 2014—38 years after her last album—that Collins made a new one, and it was gorgeous and well received. She's since released a couple more, all for the hip Domino label, fitting for someone who's been so quietly influential. Her latest is Archangel Hill; check out “Hares on the Mountain” right here. Radie Peat, singer for Lankum, is one of the many musicians who've been deeply influenced by Collins—and by the traditional songs that Collins helped to keep alive. But while Lankum is definitely part of the folk tradition, they modernize the sound in wildly interesting ways. Their fourth and latest album is called False Lankum, and I love this quote about it from Mojo Magazine: “If modern folk music needs its own OK Computer, its own The Dark Side of the Moon, or indeed its own F♯A♯∞, this may well be it.” (That last album referenced, in case you didn't recognize it, is the debut from Godspeed You Black Emperor.) If that all sounds intriguing, you'll probably love it. Oh, and the album was recently shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize. Here's “Go Dig My Grave” from False Lankum. Peat describes this conversation as “fangirling,” though I'm not sure that's entirely fair. There's definitely some mutual admiration happening here—Collins still keeps up with music, and she loves Lankum as well. They talk about Collins' adventures in America with Alan Lomax, about other singers they admire, and how they share a pretty strong hatred for jazz. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Shirley Collins and Radie Peat for chatting. "From the moment I first heard this record (late at night in a dark, suburban lounge room) I was entranced. The beauty and the chaos; the light and shade; the juxtaposition of spoken-word recordings and heartfelt musicianship – 'Slow Riot' still has so much to offer 25 years after it was recorded. More than just about anything else I've heard, this EP is a journey, and a mesmerising one at that." - Matt Episode 13 features Abby's pick: First Aid Kit's Palomino. Generally regarded as one of the greatest albums of the noughties by the likes of Pitchfork, , this two-disc instrumental post-rock symphony by a gaggle of Canadian anarcho-Marxists is the soundtrack to the apocalypse. Samples of old men mourning the halcyon days of their youth spent sleeping at the beach on Coney Island mingle with stirring cinematic strings, scraping industrial drone and wild swirling shoegaze guitar on LIFT YR SKINNY FISTS LIKE ANTENNAS TO HEAVEN (2000). This episode on Enjoy An Album, Christopher and Liam listened to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and now they're going to talk about it, as well as the way most record labels are owned by the same corporations that own weapons manufacturers, and what differentiates Godspeed from other post-rock bands like Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky. All that, plus Secret Posho, Unhinged YouTube Comment of the Week and Tattoo Woohoo/Tattoo Boohoo. Enjoy! Montréal's Black Ox Orkestar has been making 'music of the Jewish diaspora not tied to any state' since the early 2000's. Orkestar is a name you'll see a lot in Balkan music; it's simply Serbo-Croatian for orchestra or ensemble. But the musicians were also in much-admired post-rock bands like Silver Mt Zion, and Godspeed You Black Emperor, so after a while they went their separate ways, but came back together in 2021. Their new album, called Everything Returns, "connects key current issues—from refugees forced to leave their homes, to the return of fascism and exclusionary nationalism—with the legacy of modernist Yiddish poetry and song", (Bandcamp liner notes.) The songs are a melancholic twist on traditional Jewish klezmer music, with vocals mainly sung in Yiddish – with piano, violin, upright bass, clarinet and cymbalom (a stringed instrument of the dulcimer family) – taking on hues of indie rock, experimental folk and avant-jazz. Black Ox Orkestar plays both traditional and original songs for us, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “Tish Nign” “Body Keeps the Score”, “Mizrakh Mi Ma'arav” Watch "Tish Nign": Watch "Body Keeps the Score": Watch “Mizrakh Mi Ma'arav”:

We dig into feelings, and how the music is constructed to tell a story without any words at all. We might not sleep anymore on the beach, but we LOVE this record!

Remfry's had his first vaccination much to Steve's chagrin. Irrefutable proof that the NHS believe Remfry is a better person than Steve (guess who's writing this episode description). In other far less exciting news, Daron Malakian has stated that 'guns are essential' in response to a frankly bizarre (and pretty crap to be honest) cover of BYOB by GunDrummer, a musician / irresponsible gun fetishising lunatic who replicates beats and drum patterns using firearms. In his defense, it's a better use of guns than shooting people, so you carry on Mr. GunDrummer. And a group of songwriters who collectively have writing credits for some of the biggest artists in pop music (Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, One Direction, Michael Bublé, Lorde, Shawn Mendes and Selena Gomez amongst others) have formed an advocacy group called The Pact to raise awareness and prevent pop stars from taking writing credits on songs that they didn't write. Internet Freakshow - Stories of Internet Mysteries, Trolls, Weirdos, and Freaks
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a band originally formed in Canada in 1994. They’re an experimental rock group who has had quite a bit of success. Their most popular song is called East Hastings, and it was featured in the 2002 film, “28 Days Later”. Anyone who has seen the movie likely remembers that haunting song as the film’s protagonist wanders around a deserted city. That’s not the only success the band has had though. Throughout the years, and despite the various drama that bands have with members leaving and hiatuses to pursue other projects, they’ve collected quite a cult following and they still produce music today. So while you may not have heard of this band, all you need to know for the purposes of this podcast are that the band is popular in many circles with rabid fans dying to hear their music. In 1994 shortly after forming the band, they assembled at a small studio in New Brunswick to record an album. This album had a very small run. Just 33 copies of this cassette tape were created in total, and over the years all cassettes vanished. Despite the best efforts by the fans to track down the missing album, they were unsuccessful. The album was destined to be lost forever. Even the band didn't have a copy.
Neste episódio destacamos Mladic, primeira música do álbum Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! do Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Falamos sobre os seus aspectos técnicos de composição e produção, sua importância na discografia da banda e de como essa música consegue transmitir um sentimento pesado e marcante que remete com maestria a sua temática bélica, caótica e trágica.
This week (?!) we chat about Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Lithics, Camera Obscura and The Cramps. Freya remembers something from the internet and laughs hard.
This week’s guest, guitarist Russell Mofsky, is a bit of a musical enigma. Co-founder of beloved South Florida punk band Quit and leader/creator of Surf/Lounge/Noir combo Gold Dust Lounge, Russel is a music-school geek who thinks like a poet. It’s only fitting they he chose to discuss the dark, foreboding debut release by Canadian post-rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor, “F#A#∞” We do our best to dig into this expansive “soundtrack to the apocalypse”, and the episode ends with an improvised in-studio jam with Russell and our own Barry Stock. “The car’s on fire and there’s no driver at the wheel…”

The Under The Scope duo reviews another classic album. This time, we analyze a post-rock masterpiece.
After three genre-defining albums and a subsequent ten-year hiatus, post-rock pioneers Godspeed You! Black Emperor returned to the forefront of the music community’s attention with Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! A 53-minute instrumental affair featuring two twenty-minute long tracks, Allelujah! is difficult to parse, both as a piece of music and as a text. But repeat listens and examination […] The post ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! by Godspeed You! Black Emperor appeared first on Critically Acclaimed.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor don't really do brevity. They do epic, sweeping, often joyous, always elaborate, suites of music that are designed to move you. They're thorough, crafting songs with painstaking attention to detail. In keeping with the spirit of the band, we thought we'd do the same, so we present to your our longest episode yet. But trust us when we say that it's probably up there with our most interesting listens. We dive deep into the band's back catalogue, stopping along the way to talk about the politics of the band and yes, we do offer a take on some thorny subjects. With this band it's something that can often be inseparable from the way their music, and image, is presented, so it had to happen. The Foo Fighters Nexus also returns (jingle pending) and Chris has a full on GY!BE superfan nerdgasm, while Weaver whacks his politics degree on the table and Mark takes issue with the label "post-rock". This is a fun and captivating listen. We understand that the title of "best Godspeed album" is a contentious one, so we're intrigued to see if people agree with our decision to include this in our canon Unsung classics. Do you agree? Vote on our Facebook page.

ODESSA, CUSTER & EAST 8TH mixed by AERIFORM Picture this...a rain sodden but warm, grey day in modern Texas. Thunder rumbles in the distance, trains passing on a nearby track. A person stands on a lonely street corner, piss wet through, just stood, drifting in and out of some kind of consciousness......If like me, you have poignant memories listening to KLF back in the day, you will know instantly, this podcast is Aeriforms love letter to Madrugada Eterna. 'Odessa, Custer & East 8th' slowly unfolds straight back to those days, when raving was always a journey and when everybody got, a little lost sometimes! Fifty-two minutes of pure ambience lies ahead of you. Hit the download and keep it. 1. EL HEATH martenot marat 2. MAX RITCHER h thinks a journey 3. HECQ giants 4.
