POPULARITY
Cyndi Lauper is a phenomenon. Her first album, "She's So Unusual," sold millions of copies, and her songs continue to be some of the most memorable and influential of all time. There is much more to her story, however, and that's what we discuss this time.Connect with us at tapeheadspod.comRELATED LINKS:Our Girls Just Wanna Have Fun playlist, on SpotifyCyndi Lauper, on SpotifyCyndi Lauper, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" official video, on YouTubeCOVER YOUR EARS:Not30, "Time After Time," on YouTube
Ce 20 mars, Marjorie Hache orchestre deux heures d'exploration pop-rock et indie sur RTL2 Pop-Rock Station. En ouverture, les Britanniques d'Architects font sensation avec "Everything Ends", tiré de leur album "The Sky The Earth and All Between". Today, there is no special guest, all you have is me, Monica Healer, your host. Today, we're discussing the importance of play for adults by prioritizing activities that bring joy. I know the realities of stress and burnout that many early childhood leaders and teachers experience are real. This is why engaging in activities that stimulate creativity and improve brain functionality is so important. In this episode, we'll discuss activities that we can do to alleviate stress, such as reading for pleasure, playing games, practicing a musical instrument, or spending quality time with family. We will also talk about the negative impact of social media and how it impacts our joy. But of course, the Bible points us to where true joy comes from–the Lord. A resource on this topic can be found in our Course Library, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”! You can access the link for it HERE.

In an era of iconic music (and fashion) superstars, Cyndi Lauper burst onto the scene in the 1980s with a flash of neon-infused female-forward pop. She was perfect for the MTV generation, as her look took the pop culture world by storm. But “She's So Unusual” was not just a vehicle to get her on TVs. The album is packed with timeless classics like “Time After Time,” “All Through the Night” and the VERY progressive for its time “She Bop.” But with “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” Lauper delivered a female anthem that resonates 40 years later. And she looked so … “unusual” doing it.

I grew up watching MTV as a teen (and beyond) and one band that stood out for me were THE HOOTERS (A Philadelphia PA band that looked fun and lyrically different with lines and melodies you'd remember for a long time). Who can forget the songs "And We Danced", "All You Zombies", "Day by Day" and "Hanging on a Heartbeat" ? It was a great honor to finally talk to Eric Bazilian! The Hooters just got off a tour with Rick Springfield & Tommy TuTone. ********* Matt and I (rob) talk to Eric about: - Eric's beginnings at age 10 with his band The Limestones - Being a huge part of the monumental debut album from Cyndi Lauper (Eric wrote and played the guitar riff for Girls Just Wanna Have Fun; his partner Rob Hyman wrote Time After Time with Cyndi) - We find out how the HOOTERS got their name and Eric even shows us and plays us his very own Hooter - The creation of Joan Osbourne's hit song "one of us" (in which Eric wrote) - Eric's connection to Sweden - How The Hooter's are big in Germany (move over David Hasselhoff!) - Paul Stanley - The Philly Taco and much much more! ************ You can find Eric (or the Hooters) on Facebook & Instagram. They will embark on another tour next summer. In this bonus episode, Kristen Ghodsee welcomes back her now almost 22-year-old daughter to discuss a theory of fun. What would a society look like if we prioritized the ability of everyone to have as much fun as they wanted (in whatever form that fun might take)? Rather than worrying about the fitness benefits of different human behaviors, maybe all we really need to do is focus on having a good time, and the rest will take care of itself.Mentioned in this episode:The Barbie MovieAntonio GramsciMax Weber and the Protestant EthicCyndi Lauper song: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"Taylor Swift "22"Thanks so much for listening. Yellowjackets might be taking a break, but The Watchers doesn't quit. Jodie and Andrea are using the off-season break to share the movies that made them the kind of people who were destined to be obsessed with a show like Yellowjackets. This week, Jodie grabbed Andrea by bangs (and pulled us all up from the depths of Radio Flyer despair) to introduce her to the absolute romp that is the 1985 comedy dance romance, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt, this delightful little movie provided some much-needed relief from our last two movies, which, we'll admit, included a surprising amount of child abuse. We talk about the tropes that populate this genre of movie and Jodie argues Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a dance movie pioneer. We discuss our love for Helen Hunt and her very cool hats. Jodie talks about her love of dance, and Andrea talks about her love of Bruce Springsteen. This is honestly a pretty silly episode. We had a lot of fun. Hope you have fun listening!Mentioned in this episode:"31 Years Later, Girls Just Want To Have Fun is a Ridiculous Dance Party""America's Love for TV Dance Shows Has Long History""Dancing in the Dark" music videoNext week, we're watching Andrea's pick, the 1992 black comedy, Death Becomes Her. Yellowjackets might be taking a break, but The Watchers doesn't quit. Both of which we discuss throughout this episode. Just in case you've been having too much fun watching movies with us, Andrea has decided to bring everyone down by making us watch her favorite movie about childhood trauma, the 1992 Richard Donner film, Radio Flyer. We talk about memory versus reality, the power of childhood imagination, how this movie fails to handle either successfully and why that might be. Are you ready, Ken? Let's head to the Dreamhouse! It's Barbie week on The Bachelorette and Charity leans majorly into theme. We couldn't be happier. This week, the boys get completely gaslit into getting excited for the first trip of the season to.. Oceanside..California. Like we're not even taking a plane. Brayden get's a 1 on 1 and one massive collective groan can be heard across the nation as Charity starts to put on her clown nose.. and shoes.. with these date choices. They ride a helicopter and hang out in a baseball stadium. We couldn't be less interested. The group date is Barbie themed and the house of men dress up as Ken through the ages and perform stunning rewrites of 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' A sleeper hit comes through with the victory but will it be in vain? Do we have a second villain of the season? Oh... and someone literally wastes the best 1 on 1 idea ever and is such a bad date that he doesn't make it back... The Hooters were most known for their handful of rock singles in the 80s: "And We Danced," "Day By Day," "All You Zombies," to name a few. There is a reggae-tinged to "All You Zombies." Earlier versions of the song were more overt because when they formed, The Hooters were one of the US's first ska bands. Today we sit down with Hooters' members Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian to talk about their ska years in Philadelphia. The group got a lot of local radio play with their cover of The Skatalites' "Man on the Street." We also discuss their first rendition of "All You Zombies," which was another crowd-pleaser during these years. Their history with ska is expansive. Rob tells us about visiting Jamaica in the 60s as a teen and hearing Eric Monty Morris' "Sammy Dead" on the radio and immediately deciding he needed to track that record down. We also dive deep into a very unusual and interesting time for the band in the 80s when they collaborated with Cyndi Lauper on her "She's So Unusual" album. We discuss such favorites as "Time After Time" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and hear about all the ska and reggae elements that started out on this record in the demo phase (Some of those elements remained!) The band confirms for us that Cyndi loves ska. And of course, it wouldn't be a proper episode of In Defense of Ska if we didn't ask a fellow Philly band about Catbite. And no surprise, they are besties! Support the show

Mardi Gras has popped up so quickly this year. World Pride is kicking off as Mardi Gras comes to a close this coming weekend, which is the last weekend of February. This edition of Mardi Gras Anthems arrives a couple of days before the big party which is celebrating it's 45th anniversary. For this set I wanted to present a more house flavoured disco/pop sound. These are all songs I have heard at the MG party over the years with the exception of a couple which came out last year. The set kicks off with Cyndi Lauper's timeless classic "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" remixed by the Ghostbusterz. Division 4 works his magic on three remixes here for Belinda Carlisle, Taylor Swift and Whitney Houston. His remix of "So Emotional" is the definitive mix in my opinion. Dirty Disco, who is playing at World Pride/Mardi Gras events features four amazing remixes at the front and back end of the set. Melbourne based remixer Luin turns out a funky mix of Madonna's "Who's That Girl". Check out his soundcloud page for stacks of great remixes.. Subesque's house classic "Ain't No Love" is updated by Jet Boot Jack who is turning out some really great remix productions. It wouldn't be a MG anthems edition without remixes from 7th Heaven, Hex Hector and Wayne G. All feature remixes here. Gloria Gaynor's classic anthem is remixed by Dirty Disco and the set closes out with Debby Holiday's uplifting "Joyful Sound" and finishes with Beyonce's amazing "Listen" mixed by DJ Escape & Dom Capello. This years MG anthems is a vocal diva journey. Have fun and be safe. Phil and Jake are rank the 1983 fictional band biopic Eddie and the Cruisers, the 1999 Latin pop hit “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of…)” by Lou Bega, and being possessed on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Jake and Phil are always on the grind trying to make money while they sleep, trying to monetize, etc. Just the most craven shit you can imagine. Pod-Bucks are how Phil and Jake get paid for making this podcast. A Pod-Buck is kind of like a No-Prize but without the envelope. Actors that we discuss include Tom Berenger, Ellen Barkin, Joe Pantoliano, James Franco, Michael Paré, Rick Springfield, Gary Oldman, Dan Aykroyd and Bob Saget. Many musical acts come up during the episode, such as Bruce Springsteen, Dion and the Belmonts, My Chemical Romance, Damaso Perez Prado, Aerosmith, Ice Cube, Spinderella, Bell Biv Devoe and Chris Gaines. We talk about how The Doors were used as an inspiration for Eddie and the Cruisers, but we fail to draw the connection that there were also rumors about Jim Morrison faking his death. Songs discussed include “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty (which is from the movie), “Quarter to Three” by Gary U.S. Bonds (maybe Phil's favorite song of the 20th century), “Project Chick” by Cash Money Millionaires, “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cindi Lauper and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dione Warwick. Phil mentions a song from the movie called “Special Touch” but the actual name of the song is “Down On My Knees” (also by John Cafferty). Phil's right when he says it sounds like “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp. Other movies discussed include That Thing You Do!, West Is West, Streets of Fire, Jersey Boys, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Howard the Duck, Caddyshack, The Matrix, The Truman Show, Drumline, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Exorcist, All of Me, Ghost, Ghost Rider, Ghostbusters, Evil Dead 2, Repossessed, R.I.P.D., The Frighteners and of course Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! Streets of Rage is the arcade game Phil mentioned that uses the common trope of a power up of a whole roast chicken that makes the player regain his health. The Palace of Depression was a real place in Vineland, New Jersey. Jake claims that Eddie and the Cruisers used the actual site as a shooting location, though the internet implies that it was razed in 1969 so maybe the one from the movie was a recreation. Jake calls meals_by_cug a Jersey guy but it looks like he's from Staten Island. We refer to our episode featuring Dave Hause, in which we go over Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift and master tapes. Here's the scene from The Simpsons where Bart tries to buy a novelty license plate. Brian WIlson had a nervous breakdown when he heard the Beatles' Revolver. Sleep paralysis is the worst. Jake cites Scottish folklore that attributes it to a witch sitting on your chest. We couldn't trace the story to Scotland, but we did discover the night hag, which isn't too far off the mark. We don't actually get into the movie, but Silverado is an 80s neo-traditional Western by Lawrence Kasdan with a stacked cast that Phil's never seen, and is the one movie that Phil will never be invited over to Jake's house to watch. Today's conversation is fun and full of laughter and joy. My guest is Erin McLendon, a songwriter and vocalist from Nashville who runs a studio called Music on the Move. Erin is an absolute joy, and our conversation is all about REAL LIFE. Stick around till the end of the episode to hear Erin's single, Shakin in my boots, and check out the show notes below for more info on how to follow Erin. In 2020, she launched Music on The Move Studios, with business partner & bandmate Caitie Thompson. Senior Staff Writer for The Ringer Rob Harvilla joins DJ Louie for a deep dive into foundational early MTV-era icon, Cyndi Lauper. First, Louie and Rob parse what made the early 1980s such a crystallizing moment for The Pop Star as we know it today and particularly the role MTV played in taking pop stardom 360°, making it a visual endeavor as much as a musical one. They then breakdown Cyndi's rough-and-tumble upbringing in Queens and how it established her distinct star persona and voice, her stint as a cover band front-woman honing her skills as a canny interpreter of other people's songs, and her first breakout attempt as the lead singer of erstwhile new wave band, Blue Angel. Next, they consider her seminal solo debut album, 1983's She's So Unusual, how she remade cover songs in her own image, the towering success of her first single “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” which both solidified her place in the pop canon but potentially became an albatross around her neck, as well as the versatility she displayed on her second hit, quintessential ‘80s power-ballad “Time After Time”'. Next, Rob and Louie examine Cyndi's successful sophomore album, 1986's True Colors, how it cemented both her more overt activist bent and her status as an LGBTQIA+ icon, Cyndi's third record, 1989's A Night To Remember, which she's since referred to as “A Night To Forget”, how she struggled to regain her commercial footing through the ‘90s and ‘00s despite releasing some of her best music and finally, her surprising late-career renaissance as the Tony-Award winning composer of the hit Broadway musical, Kinky Boots. Finally, Louie and Rob place Cyndi Lauper in the official Pop Pantheon. • I think this is the first official girl's trip that wasn't about business, it was just an all-girls trip. So I thought, this is going to be awesome, and I thought it was going to be really relaxing. We got down there and I found out that it was a really happening place. What I really found was, I compared it to New Orleans, my hometown. New Orleans with palm trees, palm trees and rosters.(03:31)• I say girls will always be girls, most of us, we're in our 40s and 50s, there was a couple of younger ones, 20s and 30s, but we will always be girls because when women get together, they're just little girls, we never really grow up, we just wanna have fun. That song rings true, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. I mean, we're doing each other's hair, we're doing each other's make-up, we had four women into each room, and it was like a big summer party every night, and we had snacks and drinks, and it was just a blast. (4:49)• It was very humid, so I just let my wavy hair go, I did not use a hair dryer, I don't think the entire time I was down there because it was pretty much useless. But, we had a wonderful, wonderful time. We just stayed up dancing, I think the latest was like four in the morning. There was a karaoke place open, and a couple of my friends sang, I didn't. I just got a new perspective on the trip, I got new insight to why we need girlfriends in our lives as women. Really, if we don't have them, you may tell yourself you don't need them, but it's very important to have friends. (06:27)• So I really encourage you, if you have not gotten away anywhere recently, don't let time pass by because your whole life can pass by before you know it, and then you haven't done anything that you've dreamed of doing. Even if it's getting away on a road trip to a friend's house where it won't cost a lot of money, just invest in the gas and go to some place different. Just go and get away out of your normal surroundings, take a couple of days off or take a week away, and give that gift to yourself, give yourself a gift of that time, because it will inspire you and it will renew your faith in things and it will be refreshing. It's a confession-packed episode, as one should expect when men blithely discuss what women want. Thankfully, there's an appearance by Lenny (sounds like a man's name but she identifies as female) to save it from being an unpalatable sausage-fest of Peter, Dave, and random internet message-board dudes. Also there's surprising depth to be discovered in the lyrics of Cyndi's breakout hit of 1983. Certainly shocked me. Enjoy! "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" features flirting with danger while dancing with the devil, getting titular, police reviews, types of fun, movie tie-ins, nerds and incels have their say, introspective video games and the joy of resource management, bad impressions, work ethics and unproductive fun, more bad impressions, silly syllables, hiccups, outing a podcaster, contractual negotiations, women's rights to fun, global organisations on fun, male origins and hypocrisy, switching meanings and perspectives, Israelites and The Hooters, creepy rapist friends, kale and covid, complex fun, disdain for boy-fun. A year before the first Wrestlemania there was The Brawl to End It All, a grudge match between The Fabulous Moolah and Wendi Richter featuring Cyndi Lauper in Richter's corner. The event aired on MTV and set a ratings record for the then fledgling network. It was a mainstream crossover success for the WWF with Lauper and Captain Lou Albano taking their "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" on-camera beef from the screen to the ring and settling the score in the world's most famous arena: Madison Square Garden! Watch along with us by following this link and watching from the beginning: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xte2g7 If it's been taken down and you find a YouTube link (search "Brawl to End It All" and look for the 2:46:33 long video) you can cue it up to the 1:43:17 mark. Thanks to Jeff for his time, vulnerability and good humour this week. You can learn more about him on his website. You should also keep an eye out for his storytelling courses. He's an excellent teacher (he taught me!) who has been doing online work during the pandemic. As always, I encourage you to seek out a copy of the song that inspired the story and listen to it either before or after you listen to the show. While you're at it, if you haven't already heard the synth-heavy original version -- released in 1985 by The Family, a Prince "side project" -- you might want to give it some time. It's one of those rare cases of the original being significantly less well known than the cover (on a list of many, but, some of my faves include The Tide is High, What a Man, Respect and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun).As always, you can get in touch with The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.Do you have a story about the song that saved your life? Send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.
Denver comedian, and comedy teacher, Christie Buchele takes a chance on our show and doesn't end up dead... so that's something. This week we're talking about DANCING and since it's audio, no one IS watching. Topics include Swan Lake, Dances With Wolves, Dance Cards and more. We find out where else you can't put Baby (beyond corners). We debate whether Ashlee Simpson's SNL Jig can best Madonna falling down in a cape. And most importantly, we bond through the communal artistry of rhythmic motion!
