Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   The Making of the film “Bushman” Rob Nillson, Gail Schickele, Jon Shibata Film director Rob Nillson, Activist and Environmentalist Gail Schickele, and Film Archivist Jon Shibata in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, discussing the film “Bushman,” directed by David Schickele, recorded January 25, 2024 at Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive. Released in 1971 but filmed in 1968, the film “Bushman” is a masterpiece detailing the story of a Nigerian educator in San Francisco. The film vanished following its showing at various film festivals, and has now been digitized and restored, and can be viewed on the Kanopy and Hoopla, the free public library film apps. This discussion with Gail Schickele, wife of the late director David Schickele (1937-1999), his friend, colleague and collaborator director Rob Nillson, and BAMPFA film archivist John Shibata focuses first on “Bushman” and David Schickele, how the film came about and what happened during and after the filming, and later with the film's restoration, and a look at Rob Nillson's career as film-maker. Special thanks to AJ Fox and Susan Oxtoby of Pacific Film Archive. Inside photo: Richard Wolinsky. Born in Valdosta, Georgia, a child of threedaughters, LaShonda began singing at the tenderage of three. When her mother noticed hersinging ability, at the age of 3, she encouragedher to perform George Benson’s classic, “TheGreatest Love Of All” before a private audience.Over the years, LaShonda would becomemesmerized by the musical and melodic elementsof Pop, Rock, Country, and R&B of the 80’s and90’s, which greatly influenced her musical tastes. Her artist influences include Teena Marie, AngelaWinbush, Anita Baker, Barbara Weathers and Sharon Bryant of Atlantic Starr, Sade, George Michael, Stevie Wonder, and many others. As a young child, LaShonda’s family moved to Petersburg/Richmond, Virginia and ultimately, Prince Georges County, Maryland, where she sang in ensembles and competed in a number of talent shows. She began writing songs at age 1; her first song was affectionately penned “Candy Treat”. By the age of 17 she began writing songs and recording vocals at some of Maryland’s top recording studios. At the age of 19, she became a recording artist and was managed by the legendary flautist, Bobbi Humphrey. With aspirations of becoming an artist, as well as a songwriter, LaShonda surrounded herself by the best songwriters, having wrote lyrics for Ryan Toby of the R&B group “City High”. Through Richmond, Virginia’s Quiet Storm DJ, Mitch Malone, LaShonda was introduced to the legendary songwriter, Joseph Jefferson. Jefferson wrote timeless hits like, “Sadie”, “One of A Kind Love Affair”, and “Brandy”. Under his tutelage, she learned the true art of songwriting, as well as, the music business. Nicknamed “DatGurl”, LaShonda’s skills have led her to having her music aired on Live! With Regis and Kelly (201). She has teamed with Arrested Development’s Tasha LaRae to create music for Tasha’s upcoming solo EP project slated to be released in 2019. LaShonda works directly with playwrights to license her original music for stage productions. Her first single from her upcoming EP release, “Wash That Man” is featured in the new film titled, “Shattered Love”. LaShonda’s second single, slated for her EP is titled, “My Rhythm, My Blues”. The songs melodic and catchy intergalactic groove is an ode to the R&B genre, while also serving as a lovers anthem.   Simply, LaShonda’s supple voice and honest lyrics will prove why she’s a singer worth your time.

PART TIME Faded Rose (Shattered Love) Burger Records / Tough Love Records LP/CD/CS out November 2, 2018 WATCH THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNSppwKkZzs Taken from the album, Spell #6, released on 2nd November via Tough Love (Europe) and Burger (R.O.W.). The European pressing is available on limited edition green vinyl (500 copies). Pre-order here - smarturl.it/PartTimeSpell6 Follow Part Time Facebook - www.facebook.com/parttime623/ Nearing a decade old and with a discography reaching deep into double figures across several different labels (Mexican Summer, Burger, Plastic Response Records) David Loca’s work under the Part Time moniker really shouldn’t require any introduction. Nonetheless, the release of what is officially his sixth album, fittingly titled Spell #6, does signal something of a re-birth and provides a compelling entry point for anyone new to Loca’s prolific output. Whereas previous albums were notable for a charming lo-fi production, Spell #6 takes Part Time uptown. "I describe this album as 'my studio album', because it was entirely re-recorded at my drummer Walter Byer's studio, unlike most of my past releases being bedroom experimental pop recordings." Loca produced the record himself, impressively appropriating a classic 80s pop sound that recalls some of the more grand productions of that era - think Stephen Street’s expressive production on ‘Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me’, Crowded House and The Church’s widescreen interpolation of Paisley Underground jangle, and there's even traces Gerard McMann’s grandiose ‘Cry Little Sister’. In that sense, the record stands as an outlier in Loca’s catalogue, and in doing so sheds the sometimes limiting trappings of bedroom recording Though it is Loca’s project, Spell #6 sees him joined by a consistent supporting cast of fellow writers and performers who add a poise and deftness to his vision, most notably Ariel Pink, who makes a guest appearance on lead single, ‘I Can Treat You Better’. A lead single for its obvious earworm qualities, it also functions as an ideal snapshot of the lyrical themes that run through the entire record: romantic gestures and unrequited love, bad decisions on hot nights/hot decisions on bad nights, and unpinning it all, LA. For this is evidently a West Coast record, like a 2018 take on To Live and Die in LA: expansive, grand, and not a little crazy (in love) from the heat.

In this episode of Paranormal Underground Radio: In The Dark, we talk with Sylvia Shults, author of 44 Years in Darkness: A True Story of Madness, Tragedy and Shattered Love. This new book focuses on one of the patients at Peoria State Hospital in Bartonville, Illinois -- a woman whose spirit still roams the rounds of the abandoned asylum.  Sylvia has been a paranormal investigator for several years. She began her career as a ghost hunter as a result of doing the research for her nonfiction book Ghosts of the Illinois River (Quixote Press, 2010). Her fascination with ghosts dates back to her childhood, as she is an avid reader who was raised on Grimm’s Fairy Tales. A few years ago, Sylvia was inspired to write a collection of people’s supernatural experiences at the Peoria State Hospital in Bartonville, Illinois. This project quickly swelled into Fractured Spirits: Hauntings at the Peoria State Hospital. The book incorporates the history of the asylum, as well as the many ghost stories that have arisen out of the asylum’s abandonment. In an effort to separate fact from fiction, Sylvia thoroughly explores the true history of the hospital. Air Date: October 6, 2016 Topic: Paranormal Phenomena, Paranormal Research, Haunted Asylum, Peoria State Hospital Guest: Sylvia Shults Correspondent Segment: Krystle Vermes and Manny Veiga Hosts: Karen Frazier and Chuck Gotski Producer: Cheryl Knight-Wilson
