Episode 172 Chapter 31, ARP Analog Synthesizers. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! This week's quiz: On 8 February, I asked you a question about our article “French PM pushes through budget, faces second no-confidence vote”. That's because French Prime Minister François Bayrou used Article 49.3 – a special executive power - to push the budget through. The Parliament does not take kindly to Article 49.3, because the executive branch can use it to bypass their votes. After it went through, a no-confidence motion was immediately brought forward by the hard-left France Unbowed party. At that time, it was not thought the no-confidence motion would pass, because the Socialists said they would vote against it. My question to you was: Why did France's Socialist party say they would vote against the no-confidence motion brought by the France Unbowed party? The answer is, to quote our article: “The Socialist Party said in a press release that it did not want to see France in an extended period of financial limbo and would therefore, ‘in a spirit of responsibility', not back the no-confidence vote.”They held to their word: The Socialist party did not back the no-confidence vote - France has a budget now, and the same prime minister, François Bayrou. In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “Is the favorite child the worst child?”Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us! The winners are: RFI English Listeners Club member Nasyr Muhammad from Katsina State, Nigeria. Nasyr is also this week's bonus question winner. Congratulations, Nasyr, on your double win !Also on the winner's list this week are: Reepa Bain, the secretary of the RFI Pariwer Bandhu SWL Club in Chhattisgarh, India; Mukta Banu, a member of the Shetu RFI Listeners Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh; RFI English Listeners Club member Dipita Chakrabarty from New Delhi, India, and last but not least, RFI English listener Murshida Parvin Lata, the vice - president of the Sonali Badhan Female Listeners Club in Bogura, Bangladesh.Congratulations, winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's programme: “One Woman” by Beth Blatt, Graham Lyle, and Fahan Hassan, performed by the United Nation Women Singers; “Toy Symphony” by Leopold Mozart; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and “Nubian Lady” by Kenny Barron, performed by Bobbi Humphrey and her orchestra.  Do you have a music request? Playlist   Track Time Start Time Opening and Introduction (Thom Holmes) 11:57 00:00 1.    Herbie Hancock, Herbie Hancock Demonstrates The Rhodes Piano (1973 Rhodes). A terrific flexi-disc produced by Rhodes and narrated by Hancock who tells an interesting story about his first encounter with the instrument on a Miles Davis session and then he walks the keyboard through a series of effects. He speaks with the authority of a proud electronics tinkerer who understands the nuances that make this instrument so beloved by jazz musicians. This flexi-disc was originally delivered in the November 8, 1973 issue of Down Beat magazine. I provide both sides of the disc, in entirety. Tunes included during the demonstration include parts of Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and The Spook. Soloist, Rhodes Electric Piano, Voice, Herbie Hancock. I thought it would be wisest to lead off this podcast with an overview of the Rhodes even though it is out of chronological sequence, being from 1973. We then go back a few years to hear tracks in proper time order. 12:48 11:57 2.    The Don Ellis Orchestra, “Open Beauty” from Electric Bath (1967 Columbia). Alto Saxophone, Flute, Soprano Saxophone, Joe Roccisano, Ruben Leon; Baritone Saxophone, Flute, Bass Clarinet, John Magruder; Bass, Dave Parlato, Frank De La Rosa; Bass, Sitar, Ray Neapolitan; Congas, Bongos, Chino Valdes; Drums, Steve Bohannon; Leader, Trumpet, Don Ellis; Percussion, Alan Estes; Piano, Clavinet, Fender Electric Piano Fender, Mike Lang; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Ron Starr; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Piccolo Flute, Clarinet, Ira Schulman; Timbales, Vibraphone, Percussion , Mark Stevens; Trombone, Dave Sanchez, Ron Myers, Terry Woodson; Trumpet, Alan Weight, Bob Harmon, Ed Warren, Glenn Stuart. 5:33 24:44 3.    Miles Davis, “Stuff” from Miles In The Sky (1968 Columbia). I think this was Miles' first album recorded using the Fender Rhodes, played by Herbie Hancock. See the opening tracks from this podcast for a story about this session from Hancock. Bass, Ron Carter; Drums, Tony Williams; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Herbie Hancock; Tenor Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Trumpet, Miles Davis. 16:59 30:14 4.    Joe Zawinul, “The Soul Of A Village (Part II)” from The Rise & Fall Of The Third Stream (1968 Vortex). Zawinul, along with Hancock, was an early adopter of the Fender Rhodes. Cello, Kermit Moore; Double Bass, Richard Davis; Drums, Freddie Waits, Roy McCurdy; Percussion, Warren Smith; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Joe Zawinul; Tenor Saxophone, Arranged by, William Fischer; Trumpet, Jimmy Owens; Viola, Alfred Brown, Selwart Clarke, Theodore Israel. 4:16 47:10 5.    Oliver Nelson and Steve Allen, “Go Fly a Kite” from Soulful Brass (1968 Impulse). Another Steve Allen record, whom we heard from in part 1 playing the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Here is a selection from an album on which he plays the Rock-Si-Chord and occasional piano. Arranged by Oliver Nelson; Rock-Si-Chord, piano, Steve Allen; Drums, Jimmy Gordon; session musicians, Barney Kessel, Bobby Bryant, Larry Bunker, Roger Kellaway, Tom Scott; Produced by Bob Thiele. 2:30 51:24 6.    J & K “Mojave” from Betwixt & Between (1969 A&M, CTI). “J” is J.J. Johnson (trombonist) and “K” is Kai Winding (trombonist). Their ensemble included Roger Kellaway playing the electric clavinette. An example of using the clavinet in jazz. This was most likely a Hohner Clavinet Model C which had just been introduced in 1968. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios during late 1968. 2:31 53:54 7.    Albert Ayler, “New Generation” from New Grass (1969 Impulse). An electric harpsichord played by Call Cobbs adds some subtle comping to this buoyant tune written by Ayler, Mary Parks, Rose Marie McCoy. Baritone Saxophone, Buddy Lucas; Design Cover And Liner, Byron Goto, Henry Epstein; Drums, Pretty Purdie; Electric Bass, Bill Folwell; Piano, Electric Harpsichord, Organ, Call Cobbs; Producer, Bob Thiele; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Seldon Powell; Tenor Saxophone, Vocals, Albert Ayler; Trombone, Garnett Brown; Trumpet, Burt Collins, Joe Newman; Vocals, The Soul Singers. 5:06 56:22 8.    Bill Evans, “I'm All Smiles” from From Left To Right (1970 MGM). Piano, Rhodes Electric Piano, Bill Evans; Bass, John Beal; Conducted, arranged by Michael Leonard; Double Bass, Eddie Gomez; Drums,Marty Morell; Guitar, Sam Brown; Liner Notes, Harold Rhodes, Helen Keane, Michael Leonard; Produced by Helen Keane. For his 24th solo album, the long-established jazz pianist Evans took his turn playing both the Fender Rhodes and Steinway acoustic piano on this album, as two-handed duets no less. Liner notes were written by Harold Rhodes, inventor of the Rhodes Electric Piano. 5:42 1:01:24 9.    Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra, “Black Forest Myth” from It's After The End Of The World - Live At The Donaueschingen And Berlin Festivals (1971 MPS Records). You can hear Sun Ra enticing other-worldly sounds from a Farfisa organ beginning at about 1:35. Recorded in 1970. Of the many electronic keyboards heard elsewhere on this album (and occasionally on this track), here the Farfisa is heard the most. Here you can pick out the Minimoog by Don Preston and the ARP (Odyssey?) by Larry Mizell. The synths included here are in contrast to the more experimental sounds that Herbie Hancock was issuing at the same time. Flute, Vocals, Bobbi Humphrey; ARP Synthesizer, Larry Mizell; Minimoog, Don Preston; Bass, Chuck Rainey; Congas, King Errison; Drums, Harvey Mason; Electric Piano Fender Rhodes, Fonce Mizell, Larry Mizell; Guitar, John Rowin, Melvin "Wah Wah" Ragin; Percussion, Roger Sainte, Stephany Spruill; Piano, Jerry Peters; Produced by Chuck Davis, Larry Mizell; Trumpet, Fonce Mizell. 6:39 2:06:19 20.Ramsey Lewis, “Jungle Strut” from Sun Goddess (1974 Columbia). Another mainstream jazz artist who found many interesting sounds to accompany his electric piano. ARP, ARP Ensemble, Piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer electric piano, Ramsey Lewis; Congas, Drums, Derf Rehlew Raheem, Maurice Jennings; Electric Upright Bass Fender, Cleveland Eaton; Guitar, Byron Gregory; Synthesizer Freeman String, Ramsey Lewis; Tambura, Percussion, Maurice Jennings; Vocals, Derf Rehlew Raheem; Written by, R. Not an instrument often used in jazz, so I turn to the company's demonstration album for a sample of this more advanced in the RMI keyboard family. RMI Harmonic Synthesizer, Clark Ferguson. 2:43 2:20:24 23.  Fernando Gelbard, “Sombrero De Flores” from Didi (1974 Discos Redonde). This track features an outrageously unique Minimoog part that is akin to something you would hear from Sun Ra. Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Fernando Gelbard; Bass, Ricardo Salas; Congas, Vocals, Ruben Rada; Drums, Norberto Minichillo; Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Fernando Gelbard; Percussion, Effects, Miguel "Chino" Rossi; Producer, Alberto M. Producer, Engineer, Piano, Electric Piano, Moog, Oberheim, and the Freeman string synthesizer; digital sequencer, Drums, Percussion, Composed by, Jan Hammer. 4:29 2:32:26 26.Larry Young's Fuel, “Moonwalk” from Spaceball (1976 Arista). Immanuel Wilkins is considered one of the most compelling instrumentalists in improvised music today. His primary instrument is the alto saxophone but that's not all he can play. There's a video you can find on YouTube of an interview he did when he was 11 years old. You see an acoustic bass in the background. He can play not only the bass but also piano and other instruments. I consider Immanuel Wilkins one of today's young geniuses roaming the urban landscape. In episode 5 of Strictly Jazz Sounds Philadelphia-raised, Brooklyn-based alto sax player, composer, bandleader, and Blue Note recording artist Immanuel Wilkins joins me. Immanuel surrounds himself with today's young jazz heavy weights. I made a rough list of some of those young geniuses, and they numbered close to 20. And those were only the musicians living in the New York area. What a time Immanuel is living in, a time where he becomes a Blue Note recording artist at 22 years old. His first album, Omega, was named the number 1 jazz album of 2020 by The New York Times. That's heady stuff. Two years later, Immanuel releases his second recording on the Blue Note label to critical acclaim, The 7th Hand. The thing is all members of his quartet were under 25 years old. So, is there a sort of renaissance, a rebirth of young, brilliant talent occurring in jazz today? Immanuel Wilkins thinks that's possible. In the 1950s a resurgence of young talent occurred. One of them, recently deceased maestro Wayne Shorter, others include trumpeter Lee Morgan, bassist Paul Chambers, and pianist McCoy Tyner. John Coltrane barely made the list because he hit 30 years old in 1958. Then in the 60s there was Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, and maestro Ron Carter. And there's Bobbi Humphrey, Blue Note's first female instrumentalist, signed when she was only 21 years old in the 70s. And, in the early 80s, there were the Young Lions that reinvigorated jazz performance. Those cats included Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, and Terence Blanchard, four of the group of neo-bop jazz musicians in the 80s that defied avant-garde. What does it take to wade into the fast-moving waters of New York jazz? Immanuel knows the type of work ethic required to be signed to the number one jazz label, according to the current DownBeat Critics Poll. Blue Note's Don Was has his ear to the ground, says Immanuel. He knows the current landscape and how to pick the hot players. Immanuel was fortunate to work with his close friend vibist Joel Ross as well as pianist James Francies, who signed with Blue Note at 24 and 23 years old respectively. Something must be in the water or perhaps the air. Immanuel's faith is also at full display on his sophomore release, The 7th Hand. Is this a rare thing among jazz artists? Is this something new or has it existed all along? Immanuel's intent for this recording, for the artistry, is to serve as a vessel for the “Creator.” His purpose is to channel the Holy Spirit, Immanuel remarks. Brian Blade, who is a preacher's kid (PK as noted in the episode) and Immanuel both see their music as a sort of ministry. With The 7th Hand, Immanuel delivers his message in a major way. Listen to these two tracks from Immanuel Wilkins' recording, The 7th Hand: "Emanation" and "Witness" (featuring Elena Penderhughes, flute). Immanuel Wilkins goes on tour in Michigan on March 24, Madison, Wisconsin March 25, up state in Wisconsin, and Chicago then to Arizona, Washington, DC and back out to the west coast, returning to the east coast and Minnesota. You can find his itinerary on. Immanuel's website, www.immanuelwilkins.com. A lot of travel. Remember to subscribe if you want to be notified of future episodes. What the Riff?!?
1976 - October: Stevie Wonder “Songs in the Key of Life”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2020 43:29

Even though he was at the top of his game Stevie Wonder almost retired to work with handicapped children in Ghana before this album was made. Instead, he signed what was then the largest recording deal in history, and released what many consider the best of his classic era — the double album Songs in the Key of Life. This album was released in late September, debuted at number 1 (the first artist other than Elton John to do so), and remained there for 13 weeks.“Songs in the Key of Life” was nominated for seven Grammy Awards in 1977, and won Album of the Year, returning Wonder to the stage for the third time after his wins in 1974 and 1975. The album is full of passion and politics, jazz and funk, and can be nostalgic or melancholy without losing an upbeat feel all the way through. This album really gives you a sense of the multi-talented artist, singer, songwriter, keyboardist, harmonica player, and producer that is Stevie Wonder. He surely has been an influence in Rock and Roll and we are pleased to present this amazing work.I WishThis is the lead-off single from the album. It was released a month after the album hit the stores, and takes a nostalgic look back on Wonder's childhood in the 1950's and early 60's.AsIt was a full year after the album was released that this song made its appearance as a single. The song describes how long the singer's love will last in terms like “until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea...until the day that eight times eight times eight is four.” It flips between major and minor keys, but maintains its positive attitude throughout.Summer SoftA deeper cut, this track uses the metaphor of summer and winter to describe loss and transience in relationships. There are a lot of key changes and chord progressions that are classically Stevie Wonder, and he uses them well to give the song a feeling of things constantly moving and changing, which reinforces the theme.Sir DukeStevie Wonder pays tribute to his musical heroes in this well known song. “There's Basie, Miller, Satchmo, and the king of all, Sir Duke. And with a voice like Ella's ringing out, there's no way the band can lose.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the television series “Quincy, M.E.” Jack Klugman would leave behind his role in “The Odd Couple” to play a starring role as a medical examiner in this show which hit the airwaves much earlier than the popular forensic shows of today. STAFF PICKS:“Crystal Ball” by StyxWayne features Alabama native Tommy Shaw as writer and lead singer on this Styx classic. Shaw had recently joined the band, and this song would be the title track from their album. It discusses getting a glimpse of your future when life is confusing.“Let 'em In” by Paul McCartney and WingsRob's staff pick is from one of the biggest musicians at the time in his ex-Beatles days. McCartney references members of his real family in this song, then includes Martin Luther, Phil and Don (The Everly Brothers), Uncle Ernie (from the rock opera "Tommy").“Getaway” by Earth, Wind, & FireBrian's staff pick returns to some funky R&B from Earth, Wind & Fire's album “Spirit.” The song was written for a flute player named Bobbi Humphrey, but the demo never made it to her.“Lowdown” by Boz ScaggsBruce features the first major hit from Boz Scaggs. It was co-written by Scaggs and his keyboardist David Paich. Scaggs' session musicians would later on form the band Toto. The genre is a little disco, a little funk, and has been described as blue-eyed soul.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“A Fifth of Beethoven” by Walter MurphyThis disco take on Beethoven's 5th Symphony was very popular on the dance floors and skating rinks of 1976.

Born in Valdosta, Georgia, a child of threedaughters, LaShonda began singing at the tenderage of three. When her mother noticed hersinging ability, at the age of 3, she encouragedher to perform George Benson’s classic, “TheGreatest Love Of All” before a private audience.Over the years, LaShonda would becomemesmerized by the musical and melodic elementsof Pop, Rock, Country, and R&B of the 80’s and90’s, which greatly influenced her musical tastes. Her artist influences include Teena Marie, AngelaWinbush, Anita Baker, Barbara Weathers and Sharon Bryant of Atlantic Starr, Sade, George Michael, Stevie Wonder, and many others. As a young child, LaShonda’s family moved to Petersburg/Richmond, Virginia and ultimately, Prince Georges County, Maryland, where she sang in ensembles and competed in a number of talent shows. She began writing songs at age 1; her first song was affectionately penned “Candy Treat”. By the age of 17 she began writing songs and recording vocals at some of Maryland’s top recording studios. At the age of 19, she became a recording artist and was managed by the legendary flautist, Bobbi Humphrey. With aspirations of becoming an artist, as well as a songwriter, LaShonda surrounded herself by the best songwriters, having wrote lyrics for Ryan Toby of the R&B group “City High”. Through Richmond, Virginia’s Quiet Storm DJ, Mitch Malone, LaShonda was introduced to the legendary songwriter, Joseph Jefferson. Jefferson wrote timeless hits like, “Sadie”, “One of A Kind Love Affair”, and “Brandy”. Under his tutelage, she learned the true art of songwriting, as well as, the music business. Nicknamed “DatGurl”, LaShonda’s skills have led her to having her music aired on Live! With Regis and Kelly (201). She has teamed with Arrested Development’s Tasha LaRae to create music for Tasha’s upcoming solo EP project slated to be released in 2019. LaShonda works directly with playwrights to license her original music for stage productions. Her first single from her upcoming EP release, “Wash That Man” is featured in the new film titled, “Shattered Love”. LaShonda’s second single, slated for her EP is titled, “My Rhythm, My Blues”. The songs melodic and catchy intergalactic groove is an ode to the R&B genre, while also serving as a lovers anthem.   Simply, LaShonda’s supple voice and honest lyrics will prove why she’s a singer worth your time.

Lured into an industry filled with predictable music and cookie cutter images, Lea challenges all preconceptions of the music industry by offering a window into her world of art. Her soprano voice has been described as a one big bright moment--- A mix between Marvin Gaye, Anita Baker, and Patti LaBelle. Equipped with a flute, she offers a reminiscent vibe of Bobbi Humphrey. Lea has exactly what the R&B world has been waiting for.  Lea was accepted into the College of Charleston doubling majoring in Art Management and Theatre while minoring in Studio Art with a focus in painting. As a Freshman, an upper classman took notice to her talent and offered her a spot as the front woman in his hip hop band, “Many Stylez.” Surrounded by talented Emcee’s, Lea solidified her writing and started creating her original music. This was Lee Morgan's final recording date under his name and it was done in September of 1971. Lee was shot and killed by his estranged wife at age 33 on February 19, 1972. Morgan was identified by his relationship with hard bop but when this recording was done Morgan was looking at some new horizons. His working band consisting of tenor saxophonist/composer Billy Harper, pianist Harold Mabern, electric bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Freddie Waits was augmented here by flutist Bobbi Humphrey, trombonist Grachan Moncur 111 and an addition acoustic bassist in the person of Reginald Workman, Of the four tunes presented here, two are by Harper..."Capra Black" and "Croquet Ballet" and one tune by bassist Jymie Merritt called "Angela" for Angela Davis and a fine tune by pianist Harold Mabern called "In What Direction Are You Headed?". New music and a new sound from a great Jazz Master....Lee Morgan left us at 33 but his music lives forever!

The origins of Waterseed begin in New Orleans, the birthplace of multi-instrumentalists Lou Hill and J Sharp, the architects of Water Seed’s cool, elemental sound. Preternaturally aware of their paths fairly early, Hill began playing the alto sax in fourth grade while Sharp was developing his piano chops over the three-notes of “Hot Crossed Buns” at the tender age of five. Both learned as children to respect their crafts through studious dedication, rigorous practice schedules, and trying their hand at several different instruments before landing on their primary tools of musical expression, the percussion for Hill and the keys for Sharp, each finding their home. Sharp reared in a home of classical music, engaged in demanding training while nursing concerto circuit dreams. Hill was immersed in the radio R&B and funk of the day and the jazz culture of his storied surroundings. Both formally trained in esteemed music programs, Sharp through the famed NOCCA, the Jazz and Heritage School at Southern University and Dillard University, Hill at the venerated Xavier University. Enter Pasadena bred flautist, Cinese. Inspired by the legendary Bobbi Humphrey, the orchestral-trained Cinese switched to jazz after a 10-year business and school-led hiatus with music. Answering a Craigslist ad for Water Seed, Cinese learned her classical meets jazz foundation found nice complements with Hill and Sharp’s, rounding out their sound. Now, with a 5 piece band that eventually included bass player Marius Tilton and lead vocalist Ryan Johnson, the concept albums soon followed. Their self-released, experimental 2006 EP debut, Two Words, uncovered an avant-garde Water Seed sound, developed enough notice to garner the band an audience & brief attention from Sony Music.
