Halloween is on the way and we always do something different for it. This time we're doing a commentary for the 1987 vampire movie The Lost Boys! We even dressed in Lost Boys themed outfits for the Patreon vid which we will make available to ALL Patrons (even free ones), as a treat. The Lost Boys is an interesting comedy horror vampire film, it distils a LOT of really big 1980s style trends and yet it doesn't seem old fashioned or twee because it takes the viewer to the era and accepts you rather than keeping you at a distance as an outsider. You see punks, the surfer beach culture, metal-heads, new romantics and more. It's just a great showcase and super exaggeration of the styles. The movie starts off with the awesome Cry Little Sister theme by Gerard McMann which is 80s but also has a timeless creepy gothic feel, it's the perfect intro to the movie, setting the slightly edgy, creepy tone and coolness factor at the same time. But it also contains the perfect summary of the theme of film to come. McMann wrote the song after reading the script rather than seeing the film so he was able to get at the central things that are easy to miss with all the cool visuals: it's a film about families and loyalty. Two families compete for survival, one are the Emersons who have just moved to Santa Clara to be with their grandpa, the patriarch, the other is the vampire clan led by its patriarch. The vampire clan wants to absorb the Emersons, starting with the oldest son Michael, but youngest Sam doesn't want that to happen! Cry Little Sister is from the perspective of the Vamps alone though while the film is from the perspective of the Emersons. This is a fun, stylish movie and we had a lot of fun watching it all over again and doing this reaction cast! Comics even have a prominent place in the film with the vampire slaying Frog brothers working at a comic shop and using comics as a way of bonding with Sam as well as finding out how to deal with the vampires. Have a listen and maybe go and watch the movie again. We made this week's Patreon video free to all Patreons, so go on over there and join for free to watch it! - https://www.patreon.com/DrunkDuck This week Gunwallace has given us a Halloween sounding theme inspired by The Deadlys ReVamped - Haunting, hollow, creepy intro into a rather more friendly and charming old house with a lovely friendly, ghostly party going on… till you find out that everybody there is dead and you're all alone amongst these fleeting apparitions who fade away, leaving the house dark and desolate once more! 1987 - September: Various Artists “The Lost Boys: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2023 45:38

Long before the Twilight books and movies made vampires cool, the motion picture The Lost Boys was a hit.  This dark comedy/action drama centers around Michael and Sam Emerson and their experiences with a biker gang who are secretly vampires living in the California beach town of Santa Carla.  When Michael is drawn into the influence of the vampires, he must make a choice between becoming a vampire himself or fighting the conversion by killing the head vampire.  The name comes from the Peter Pan stories, because much like the lost boys in that tale, vampires never grow up.  The cast included Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman, and was a box office hit.The film also created a hit with The Lost Boys:  Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.  Featuring a number of notable rock stars and groups including INXS, Foreigner's Lou Gramm, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Who's Roger Daltrey, it spawned multiple singles.  The soundtrack contains both original songs and covers, all either alluding to events in the movie or to what could be considered “vampire culture” - lostness, staying up at night, and similar characteristics.  The film is credited for changing the perception of vampires to a more youthful and appealing monster.  Subsequent adaptations of the vampire genre which would be inspired by the film include movies as diverse as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the mockumentary film “What We Do in the Shadows.”John Lynch was up all night “staking his claim” on this podcast feature. Cry Little Sister by Gerard McMannSinger-songwriter Gerard McMahon wrote this anthem under the pseudonym Gerard McMann.  It would be considered the theme for the movie, and was specifically written for the film.  McMann was thinking of a Gotham-like image in which you have to turn to faith in order to escape the doom in the night.Lost in the Shadows by Lou GrammGramm steps out from the shadows of his group Foreigner for this solo effort.  The video for this song would feature clips from the film.  Fuzzy guitar distortion and harmonica drive this deep cut, and was also written specifically for the movie.  Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me by Roger DaltreyThe Elton John hit is covered by Who front man Daltrey, and the allusion to vampires is pretty clear to see.  The film ends with morning breaking and the sun coming up, and Daltrey is singing this song as the credits roll.I Still Believe by Tim CappelloThe Call's song is covered by saxophonist Cappello, who also makes a cameo where he is playing the song on the boardwalk.  The lyrics are about the 40 days of fasting that Jesus undertook at the start of His ministry, and the reference to belief plays into the theme of faith versus giving into darkness that runs through this film. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Once Upon a Time...Storybook Love by Mark Knopfler (from the motion picture “The Princess Bride”) It would be inconceivable for us to pass up this theme from the Rob Reiner movie which was in the theaters in the fall of 1987.  STAFF PICKS:One Slip by Pink Floyd After the departure of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd released the album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" with only David Gilmour and Nick Mason listed as members.  Bruce brings us this staff pick which was co-written by Gilmour and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music.  It is about unintended consequences of impulsive action, in this case an unintended pregnancy. Hourglass by SqueezeRob features the debut single from Squeeze's seventh album, “Babylon and On.”  The fast-paced chorus is distinctive and catchy.  Songwriters Chris Dilford and Glenn Tilbrook typically wrote the lyrics and music respectively in separate sessions (much like Bernie Taupin and Elton John), but collaborated in the same room on this song.  The memorable video is full of surrealism and optical illusions.Luka by Suzanne Vega Wayne takes an uncharacteristically softer and slower pick with singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega's song about child abuse.  The song was actually written prior to Vega's first album but didn't make its studio debut until her second album, “Solitude Standing."” The name comes from a boy who played in front of Vega's building and stood apart from the other children.  Bad by Michael JacksonLynch brings us the title track to Michael Jackson's massively successful follow-up album to “Thriller.”  Jackson wrote this song in an attempt to change his persona to a tough guy.  The video was directed by Martin Scorsese, and Prince auditioned for the video.  He departed as soon as he read the line, "your butt is mine," and Wesley Snipes would take the role.   NOVELTY TRACK:Wipeout by the Fat Boys featuring The Beach BoysWe finish off with this unlikely pairing of beatbox rappers of the 80's and beach music founders of the 60's.

This is no April Fool's joke, it is the 10th (!) Anniversary of The Dark Mark Show. In honor of that, we present our very first Anniversary show way back in 2014, featuring legendary singer G Tom Mac, Sin Twisted and Arthur the Magic Savage, as well as then cohost Josi Kat. Singer/Songwriter G Tom Mac, Performance Artist/Contortionist Sin Twisted and magician Arthur Gomez joined Mark and Josi for a wild party as The Dark Mark Show celebrated its 1 year anniversary. G Tom Mac talked about his extraordinary career, which has included working with Kiss, Roger Daltrey and Chicago. He relayed stories about Ice Cube mispronouncing his name but digging his beats so much he put him on the soundtrack of The Players Club, Eminem being a fan of his, being on the soundtrack of many movies including Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Mark held up his vinyl copy for proof) and talked about the eternal appeal of his best known song Cry Little Sister, how it is the ultimate vampire song that won't die, and G played an amazing acoustic version of CLS with Josi and Sin on backup vocals. Sin talked about blowing minds with recent burlesque performances as Dr. Frank N Furter from Rocky Horror and Marilyn Manson, shot sparks from her grinder at Dark Mark, compared flexibility with G and ate cake with her prize winning feet. Arthur arrived with his entourage. He talked about how Chriss Angel inspired him to do magic, how women seem to be more willing to do magic than men are, how nervous he was performing at the Magic Castle for the first time and amazing everyone in the studio with a card trick that involved the 14 of hearts (?) [-]The Lost Boys [Original Soundtrack] Review by Theresa E. LaVeck Joel Schumacher's 1987 film The Lost Boys capitalized on a temporary lull in horror movies in the late '80s and created a heavily music-video-influenced vampire homage with enough campy humor, heavy metal costumes, and hunky stars to put a fresh spin on the genre. An amusing piece of eye candy spiked by a few creepy moments, the movie, in typical '80s style, relies heavily on the soundtrack to bolster its emotional core. The soundtrack, like the film, works great on the surface -- but don't go much deeper. A mix of covers and bombastic '80s pop originals, the songs work best when they concentrate on the horror factor. Echo & the Bunnymen turn in an excellent cover of the Doors' "People Are Strange" that has a bouncier, more melodic touch than the original. Jimmy Barnes and INXS' "Good Times" is an energetic rocker used to personify the party-hardy SoCal atmosphere of the film. The strongest song is the movie's theme, "Cry Little Sister," a goth-influenced midtempo ballad. Singer Gerald McMann's pained phrasing and creepy lyrics, and a chilling chorus sung by what sounds like disembodied children, exemplify the best parts of the movie and the soundtrack. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

Vampires have always been a huge staple in horror but a script that first began circulating in the mid 80s that envisioned child-like characters more in the same vein as Peter Pan, who never grew old and could never die but were far from the bloodsucking fiends best known throughout cinema. The film was essentially capitalizing on the popularity of “The Goonies,” which had come out two years earlier and Richard Donner, the same director for that movie, was initially attached to this one as well. When he dropped off the project to go direct a little movie called “Lethal Weapon,” Joel Schumacher was hired to lead the film but he had a much different idea for the project. Writer Jeffrey Boam was brought on to rework the script with teenage leads with a sexier and more dangerous vibe than the original version of the film. With a group of up and coming stars cast in the lead roles including Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland, the film ended up becoming one of the most iconic horror movies of all time while also serving as the inspiration for dozens of books, comics and movies for decades to come. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to put the taxidermy in the closet, order some Chinese food while sharpening our stakes as we look back on the 1987 film “The Lost Boys”…

PART TIME Faded Rose (Shattered Love) Burger Records / Tough Love Records LP/CD/CS out November 2, 2018 WATCH THIS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNSppwKkZzs Taken from the album, Spell #6, released on 2nd November via Tough Love (Europe) and Burger (R.O.W.). The European pressing is available on limited edition green vinyl (500 copies). Pre-order here - smarturl.it/PartTimeSpell6 Follow Part Time Facebook - www.facebook.com/parttime623/ Nearing a decade old and with a discography reaching deep into double figures across several different labels (Mexican Summer, Burger, Plastic Response Records) David Loca’s work under the Part Time moniker really shouldn’t require any introduction. Nonetheless, the release of what is officially his sixth album, fittingly titled Spell #6, does signal something of a re-birth and provides a compelling entry point for anyone new to Loca’s prolific output. Whereas previous albums were notable for a charming lo-fi production, Spell #6 takes Part Time uptown. "I describe this album as 'my studio album', because it was entirely re-recorded at my drummer Walter Byer's studio, unlike most of my past releases being bedroom experimental pop recordings." Loca produced the record himself, impressively appropriating a classic 80s pop sound that recalls some of the more grand productions of that era - think Stephen Street’s expressive production on ‘Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me’, Crowded House and The Church’s widescreen interpolation of Paisley Underground jangle, and there's even traces Gerard McMann’s grandiose ‘Cry Little Sister’. In that sense, the record stands as an outlier in Loca’s catalogue, and in doing so sheds the sometimes limiting trappings of bedroom recording Though it is Loca’s project, Spell #6 sees him joined by a consistent supporting cast of fellow writers and performers who add a poise and deftness to his vision, most notably Ariel Pink, who makes a guest appearance on lead single, ‘I Can Treat You Better’. A lead single for its obvious earworm qualities, it also functions as an ideal snapshot of the lyrical themes that run through the entire record: romantic gestures and unrequited love, bad decisions on hot nights/hot decisions on bad nights, and unpinning it all, LA. For this is evidently a West Coast record, like a 2018 take on To Live and Die in LA: expansive, grand, and not a little crazy (in love) from the heat.

The Vampyre (John William Polidori)The Skeleton Court, or The Vampire Mistress (Elizabeth Caroline Grey) Varney the Vampire (James Malcolm Rymer) Carmilla (Sheridan LeFanu) Drácula (Bram Stoker)Vampire of the CoastThe Vampire (Robert Vignola) Nosferatu, una sinfonía de horror (F. The soundtrack to The Lost Boys is a collection of amazingly catchy tracks. Be it INXS teaming up with the Easybeats' Jimmy Barnes to do a version of "Good Times," the Who's Roger Daltry covering "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me," or the exquisitely perfect version of the Doors' "People Are Strange" by Echo and the Bunnymen, the soundtrack is a solid collection of classic songs by what were then modern artists. It's a nice nod to the ageless nature of the forever young vampires in the film. However, the film's theme song, "Cry Little Sister," by Gerard McMann, is the only cut to appear twice in The Lost Boys, and definitely does a great job of sonically conveying the concept of the film in a thre-minute pop song. McMann, who now performs under the aegis of G Tom Mac, has also recorded a musical sort of prequel to The Lost Boys. A Lost Boys Story sees release later this month, and we were excited to talk with McMann about both the film and the upcoming musical.

Today you will hear crickets. No, really. You will hear…crickets. It’s actually quite relaxing to hear them in the background, not distractingly loud but still an ever present reminder of the world around us. It’s nice. You know what else is nice? Flying Dog “The Fear” Imperial Pumpkin Ale. And at 9% abv, it’s really nice! Greg formulated a new drink from a dwindling bar. You know what they say, when you have Cynar (…pronounced “Chee-nar”…) make Cynar-ade. And that’s precisely what happened. The drink…is “Cynar the Barbarian.” The recipe…is quite simple, though the ingredients are not commonplace. If you have them, or if you have access to them, you should really give this a shot. Start with a tall glass (…pint glass, highball glass, medium-sized mason jar, whatevs…) and fill it with ice. Then, build this: 1.25 ounces Cynar (…the large side of a traditional jigger, or a full shot plus a tiny pourover…), 1.25 ounces port wine (…doesn’t need to be expensive, just port…), 1.25 ounces lapsang souchang sweet tea (…or you can make a cup of whatever tea you like. Make it strong and super saturate it with sugar to make an almost syrupy sweet tea. Squeezing in a quarter to a half lemon won’t hurt either…), then fill the glass with sparkling mineral water (i.e. Perrier) or club soda. Stir, and enjoy. It’s kind of bitter, kind of sweet, kind of smoky, and very complex. Today, Greg drags Jen into the office to take a look at an old Hollywood friend (…at least for those of us in our late 30’s to mid 40’s who grew up with The Goonies, The Lost Boys, Stand By Me, Gremlins, or The ‘burbs, among others…), Corey Feldman. Greg felt that the Feldman presentation would be hilarious and amusing, but it turns out that Corey’s journey from child superstar to grown-ass man is quite predictable and sad…and while this podcast isn’t a bummer, it’s certainly not a laugh riot. Greg moves through his agenda, which includes: > Corey Haim is dead> Corey Feldman’s “company”, Corey’s Angels*> Corey Feldman’s “music,” Remember 222 & Assention Millennium.> Corey’s apparent Michael Jackson infatuation.> Corey Feldman’s performance at a minor league baseball game     and his subsequent loss of a Special Olympics gig.> Vice.com’s reports from Feldman’s birthday parties,     in 2013 & 2014.> Celebrity wife swap with Feldman and Tommy Davidson.     Yikes, double yikes, and triple yikes. *Since recording this podcast, just last week, Corey has apparently pulled the plug on everything related to Corey’s Angels. Quadruple yikes. Here is his endorsed fluff piece. Jen claims, quite accurately, to Greg, “You want me to do things in your head but I’m a person.” This is where Corey Feldman is doing things right, as his Maingel (“main angel”) states, “I’m a fruitarian, which means I only eat fruit.” Though, not really, because she later writes a message for the camera which states, quite emphatically, “Help me!!” There is no joke in her facial expression. The lesson here? It’s better to have a real relationship with an honest, caring, and independent human being rather than a cultish fetish with women desperate to become models, or actresses, or Maingels. So really, it became quite difficult to laugh at Corey… But the drinks were outstanding, even if the music wasn’t. (Though we do close strong with, “Cry Little Sister,” by G Tom Mac. Remember that? Click here. How about now?) We present to you, “The Lost Boy.”

Gerard McMahon (G Tom Mac) is the man behind one of the most iconic and beloved soundtrack songs of all time with "Cry Little Sister" from 1987's The Lost Boys. But did you know the guy has had a successful career going back 40 years, including numerous other songs from classic films and television shows (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Players Club, Roseanne, Scrubs, Fame, etc), as well as his own solid solo career? He's also written songs for legends like Kiss, Roger Daltrey, Chicago and Carly Simon. He's not only a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of many. He's also doing something very unique with his career these days. Fascinating guy.

Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire. And boy oh boy is there a lot to unpack with this beloved 1987 horror/comedy: the hugely influential additions it made to modern vampire lore, its incredible soundtrack, the first on-screen pairing of The Two Coreys, that greased up sax player, an inexplicable Rob Lowe poster... the list goes on. Since Chris & Donna don't have as much experience battling the undead, they brought in two experts to help them out - Kristen & Mike from The Sunnydale Stacks: A Buffy Podcast! Together they examine which aspects of the film have stood the test of time, which ones haven't, and then make some guesses as to why The Lost Boys continues to resonate so strongly with so many people. Topics include: the way Joel Schumacher was regarded pre-Batman Forever, the straight-to-DVD sequels, some mixed opinions about the way the song Cry Little Sister is incorporated into the film, conflicting endgames from two of the villains, the film's undeniable influence on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other modern vampire stories, deleted scenes, alternate endings, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show
