Released in 1971 but filmed in 1968, the film “Bushman” is a masterpiece detailing the story of a Nigerian educator in San Francisco. The film vanished following its showing at various film festivals, and has now been digitized and restored, and can be viewed on the Kanopy and Hoopla, the free public library film apps. This discussion with Gail Schickele, wife of the late director David Schickele (1937-1999), his friend, colleague and collaborator director Rob Nillson, and BAMPFA film archivist John Shibata focuses first on “Bushman” and David Schickele, how the film came about and what happened during and after the filming, and later with the film's restoration, and a look at Rob Nillson's career as film-maker. I feel really privileged to have gotten the opportunity to do today's interview. Award winning illustrator/author Robin Ha joined me on the show to talk about her new queer YA graphic novel set in 16th century Korea injected with a bit of fantasy, The Fox Maidens, being released by Balzer and Bray/Harper Collins. Robin's other work has been very personal, exploring her own experiences as a teenage Korean immigrant in Almost American Girl and diving into familiar Korean cuisine with Cook Korean: A Comic Book With Recipes. The Fox Maidens is equally personal but examines not just her own experiences but those historically of Korean women and the generational trauma caused by the patriarchal and class dominated structures in place throughout its history. A young girl Kai Song has dreams of breaking down cultural norms in 16th-century Korea by following in her father's footsteps and becoming a great martial artist. Her father tracked down and killed Gumiho, the nine-tailed fox demon, for the magistrate gaining prestige and status for the family, but there's a lingering rumor about a familial connection to the creature. As Kai struggles with accepting her role as a woman in the male and class dominated societal structure, she must come to grips with and deal with the secrets of her family's past as it is wrapped up in her own destiny and identity.  This book hit me hard y'all. We only watched the first two episodes and already love it. We talk about our initial impressions of the characters, storyline, clothes, and more! We had so much fun talking and we hope you enjoy!

Kim and Maddie (kind of) finished the 2021 KDrama My Roommate is a Gumiho, with some episode recaps to help them out. They make a serious case for why Sun-woo sunbae was the real MVP and deserved so much more as well as some general confusion for why any of the males liked Dam. They discuss the side characters / ships that kept them invested (plot twist: Kim shed actual tears during one of the confessions lol) and the ending that didn't make that much sense. Nothing against either lead actors, but this show isn't making Kim and Maddie's fav list BUT they look forward to gushing about Jang Ki-yong aka the drummer (and LEAD RAPPER) of Crude Play soon.
