Up until he was a teenager, Paul Sontheimer excelled at piano, which was no surprise considering his mother was one of the best piano teachers in town. Still, when he got to high school, he decided to switch instruments and picked up the cello and eventually bass. After playing in local prog rock band Astaroth for a few years, he leaves Erie in 1979 and moves to Dallas where he lands a job with Showco and eventually travels the world as a roadie and then sound engineer for rock tours with artists such as Eric Clapton, Julian Lennon, Boston, KISS, Bad Company, The Kinks, Judas Priest, Genesis ... and the list goes on. He even had a brush with The Pope! He eventually returned to Erie and these days can be found playing bass for Matty B and the Dirty Pickles. JBL was one of the earliest and largest manufacturers of speaker components and cabinets. Mark Gander spent 41 years at JBL starting in 1978, with various roles through the years such as Applications Engineer, VP of Marketing, VP of Engineering, and most recently Director of JBL Technology. He is also known as JBL's historian and is often just called JBL GURU. In my opinion, he was one of the most influential and centrally connected people when it comes to speakers, with the largest sound companies in the world. He was directly responsible for marketing, product development, and connecting companies like Clair Bros, Maryland Sound, ShowCo, Stanal Sound, A1 Audio, Schubert Systems, and many more with JBL in the late '70s and early '80s. This was a time when all sound companies had to make their own property systems. Mark has a very unique perspective on our history because he was at the center of the live sound industry. Sound Companies needed a symbiotic relationship with a speaker manufacturer to develop, engineer, and design their systems. Mark Gander was the catalyst of that for JBL. Some of the biggest shows that have ever been put on were some of PK's first shows as a kid so when he got his first taste of the “Big Show” he was more interested in the men in black standing side stage than he was in the artists performing. PK reminisces about some of the shows in his life that really changed him. Later he dives into some of the memorable shows that he was able to be a part of that truly brought his life full circle in the world of rock n' roll. There is also a fun little part in the middle where their little one has a meltdown and they had to pause and go handle some family business but like champs they pick back up right where they left off. Tom Littrell is originally from Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1970, he graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas – (look it up!). He was drafted, spent three years in the Army, and then went back to graduate school in technical theatre. A friend’s cousin worked for a company in Dallas called Showco. They provided large-scale lighting and sound systems to rock tours. Tom dropped out of grad school to do a tour or two with Showco, then go back and finish his degree. But his second tour was as a lighting technician on Paul McCartney’s Wings over America 1976 tour. That tour…uh...set the hook so he stayed at Showco and toured with Led Zeppelin, the Who, Genesis, Linda Ronstadt, and others. In 1980, he was ready – again - to go back to grad school when Showco engineers began work on what would become the Vari-Lite system. He was asked to help with that project and delayed going back to graduate school one more time, going on the road with Genesis and the first Vari-Lite system in 1981. He programmed the moving lights and operated the console for the first show in Barcelona, Spain, and the rest of the tour. He continued at Vari-Lite for another twenty years – touring with Genesis as well as David Bowie, ZZ Top, Hall and Oates, Don Henley, and many other concert and corporate event clients. Later he did technical product management and marketing. In 2002, Showco/Vari-Lite was sold and Tom was laid off. He immediately called ETC. Happily, they offered him a job and he and his wife Stacy moved to Madison, Wisconsin in 2004. He was Fixtures Product Manager for ten years and then became an outreach and training specialist. He retired in August 2020 after seventeen years with ETC. He loves Madison – but could do without the winters. FYI, he still doesn’t have a graduate degree and wonders if he should go back to school. Thank you for joining me this week for our 99th episode, my guest is Jason Sprinzen, author of the forthcoming book about legendary sound and lighting company, SHOWCO. A native New Yorker, vintage guitar expert, and vintage t-shirt collector, Jason has always been fascinated by the 1970's Rock 'n' Roll scene. He was still in grade school when he first laid eyes on the SHOWCO logo. Over the years, he would see it again and again in photos worn on the t-shirts of his favorite rock stars. Already an avid collector of vintage rock t-shirts, Jason soon discovered that some of the most coveted rock tees around are SHOWCO shirts from the 1970's. By 2007, Jason's curiosity as to just what role this mysterious company had played in the concert tours of his favorite classic rock bands had become insatiable. Discovering that little-known SHOWCO was the premier sound and lighting company for most of the major touring bands throughout the 1970's immediately led to a desire to learn more, and ultimately suggested that he write a book to tell the story. Today’s episode is sponsored by Airturn, ShowPro Beard Co., and Gig-Gear.
