Robert Jordan, raised in a small village in Upstate New York, grew up in a hardworking, blue-collar family with strong community ties. After high school, he farmed cattle for nine years before earning a degree from SUNY Albany. Inspired by the 1993 World Trade Center attack, he joined the Navy at age 34, intending to serve briefly before law school but instead committed to a long military career. Jordan served five tours in Afghanistan, rising from Chief Petty Officer to Chief Warrant Officer in elite special operations. Witnessing both the brutality of war and the resilience of the Afghan people, he dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts, assisting widows, orphans, and struggling communities. After retiring in 2019, he founded a nonprofit supporting Afghanistan's poorest and continues advocating for veterans. Now an author, pastor, and philanthropist, Jordan has published books like Faith, Flag, and Family and The Warms of the Gospel series. He also co-authored a teen novella, Mackenzie's Good Fortune Through Misadventure, with his granddaughter. He hosts the Veterans Outlook podcast and leads Task Force Genesis, helping veterans heal through agriculture.

The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. On this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, we sit down with Ajay James, a Retired Navy SEAL Senior Chief, and a man who has lived multiple lives across different professions. His journey is one of relentless pursuit—of challenge, of purpose, and of transformation. From his roots in Trinidad to navigating life in the U.S., joining the military, and eventually becoming a special operations warrior, Ajay's story is packed with insights for military veterans, first responders, and anyone facing a major career change.Ajay didn't start out with a clear path toward the military. Growing up in a strict household with a father who was a police officer and engineer, discipline was ingrained in him early. However, academics never felt like the right fit, and his journey was anything but conventional. Before enlisting, he worked in fields like executive protection, trained as a Muay Thai fighter, and even modeled professionally. But deep inside, he knew he wanted something greater—a challenge that pushed him beyond his limits. That challenge came in the form of the Navy SEAL Teams. Despite enlisting at 33 years old, well past the typical age for special operations candidates, Ajay committed himself to the brutal training required to become an elite warrior. Through BUD/S, he was assigned to SEAL Team 5, serving in deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. He eventually achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. But after years of military transition, deployments, and combat, Ajay faced his toughest mission yet: life after service. Leaving the SEAL Teams wasn't just a career shift—it was an identity shift. Like many military veterans, he had to navigate the complexities of finding new purpose, building a civilian career, and adjusting to a world without the structured intensity of special operations.Today, Ajay has embraced veteran transition, helping others through mentorship, fitness, and leadership development. Whether working with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, or transitioning service members, he's proving that the mission doesn't end when the uniform comes off. His story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of transformation.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:IG: WEBSITE: LinkedIn:SIGN-UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER:QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:SPONSORS:Trident CoffeeGet 15% off your purchaseLink: https://tridentcoffee.comPromo Code: TDP15Human Performance TRTGet 10% off your purchaseWeb: https://hptrt.com/Promo Code: TDP

Don Howell's life took a profound turn on October 23, 1983, when he survived the devastating Beirut barracks bombing. As a young Navy corpsman, Don was stationed in Beirut where his close friend, Bryan Earle, tragically lost his life. The night before the attack that would take the lives of 241 U.S. servicemen in one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, Don said the Lord's Prayer before transferring to the basement of the BLT building, where he narrowly escaped death. Buried under the rubble, a chunk of concrete hit Don in the right eye, leaving him blind in that eye to this day. Despite the darkness and chaos, he followed a beam of light and dug himself out. He was evacuated to Germany where he was awarded a Purple Heart by General Paul Kelly. Don's story of survival is a testament to resilience and faith, and today, he shares that powerful journey with us as part of our limited series: Beirut Survivors. Don Howell is a retired U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman, Chief Petty Officer, who served 22 years in the U.S. Navy, with postings in various critical medical roles across the globe. After retiring as a critical care nurse, he continues to pursue his passions, including music and fitness, while maintaining strong ties with those he served alongside, demonstrating a life marked by service, resilience, and dedication. “Service to CEO” podcast creator Kristen Costlow left a promising military career to pursue her dream.  She served as an air traffic controller in the Navy and was rising fast in rank.  She soon found herself supervising sailors 10 years her senior. The day after she notified her supervisor of her plans to leave the military, she was promoted to Chief Petty Officer – quite the accomplishment for someone of her age. Kristen joined the Navy right out of high school and says there were no specific issues that caused her to leave mid-way to a full military retirement. She was just experiencing severe burnout and didn't want to be one of those persons who looked back and had regrets about not pursuing her dreams. She wanted to be a wedding photographer. Kristen received her business license in March of 2021, in the middle of the COVID pandemic. While many weddings were postponed during the pandemic, she says there was a huge rebound surge in 2022.  When a wedding “boom” comparable to the days following World War II came along, K Nicole Photography was ready for them. The Small Business Administration estimates that the average small business fails in 3-5 years. Although Kristen's photography business is right in the middle of that window, she says she no longer wakes up terrified. “Every day I just have to wake up and know that I have to do the work, and I am grateful for the opportunity to do so.” Based upon her transition experiences, Kristen decided to start the Service to CEO Podcast to provide a platform for other women Veteran entrepreneurs to share the story of their journeys. She hopes to inspire other women in their “second lives”.  The Service to CEO podcast can be found on all major platforms. TAKEAWAY: “That one day I might decide to leave early on a Friday is the one day that a client won't wait until Monday. In my business one bad review can be really damaging.”

For many, Bob Feller is the fastest pitcher the baseball world has ever seen, with a reported 107 mph pitch once leaving his hand. And if Ted Williams says that's true, who is going to argue with that> In an interrupted career, Feller posted a lifetime ERA of 3.25 on 266 wins from 570 games, including 44 shutouts, 12 one-hitters, and three no-hitters. On retirement, he was the number three all-time strikeout pitcher (with just Cy Young and Walter Johnson ahead of him). Those records could well have been higher, but Feller volunteered for military service following Pearl Harbour, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. On leaving the Navy at the end of the war, he started to make his way back to Cleveland… he was pitching two days later. After hanging up his glove, Feller became the first President of the Major League Baseball Players Association and fought hard for a fairer deal for the Union's members. To celebrate the life of Bob Feller, we're going back to 1948, and the first game of the World Series. Feller is on the mound for his beloved Indians, while Johnny Sain is pitching for the Boston Braves. Behind the microphone are Mel Allen and Jim Britt. You can find the boxscore here; https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BSN/BSN194810060.shtml This game was played on October 6th, 1948. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy's most decorated units during Vietnam, Mark shares his experiences, discusses the mission of the Seawolves while remembering the sacrifice of Servicemembers who served during the Vietnam War.  The Vietnam War has a long history. It was one of the longest wars involving America. Starting in 1955, the war went on until 1975, making it the second-longest war, aside from the ongoing Afghanistan War. Over 2.7 million Americans served during this war In 1973. All combat and support units withdrew from Vietnam following the war, but it continued to have an impact on many of the families and people affected by the war. National Vietnam War Veterans Day is acknowledged on March 29 every year, honoring anyone who served during its 20-year time. Since respect and combat support wasn't immediately given to those who served after the war ended because of the number of deaths, the day was founded in 2017 to finally offer that respect to everyone involved. Dr. Vince Patton served as the Eighth Master Chief Petty Officer (a combination of a rank and a position) of the Coast Guard for more than 30 years until his retirement in 2002.As the service's top senior-ranking enlisted leader and ombudsman during that period, Master Chief Patton was the principal advisor to the Commandant of the Coast Guard, his directorates, and the secretaries of Transportation and Defense. Dr. Patton's primary focuses were on quality of life, career development, work environment, and personnel matters, which affected over 45,000 active duty, reserve, and civilian personnel service-wide. Dr. Patton received his Doctor of Education from the American University, Washington; a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University, Chicago; a Master of Theology from Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley; and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Pacific College, Angwin.Dr. Patton set his eyes on becoming the Coast Guard's Master Chief Petty Officer after two weeks in boot camp in Cape May, New Jersey. He drew strength and inspiration from Pelé's words, the legendary soccer player, who said, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, but most of all, love of what you're doing or learning to do.” In 1976, during his journey climbing the ranks, Dr. Patton took a Dale Carnegie class that helped him improve his confidence, communicate better, and discover his core values and vision. He is delighted that Dale Carnegie became a stepping stone to leadership and is still ongoing today. And he now understands what a good foundation this program is in helping individuals in their leadership journey & developing their personal philosophies.Dr. Patton had a communication problem and overcame his stuttering by singing the Star-Spangled Banner every day. That gave him renewed confidence to sing out loud, to read articles and books out loud, and helped him become an influential leader in the U.S. Coast Guard. When Dr. Patton finally reached his goal of becoming a Chief Petty Officer, he realized his job was a privilege and served multiple purposes. The best way to describe it is that he was a cheerleader, a consultant, an advisor, and a chaplain, and heard all kinds of things from people in terms of what's needed in the service. The experience also helped Dr. Patton develop his core values centered on people, passion, and performance. Our capabilities and ability to handle responsibilities start with our core values. We are where we are today because we stood on somebody's shoulders. And wherever we are heading, we need to give back.Join us to learn how to be better, do better, and excel in order to mentor other people to be the best they can be.Listen to leadership and communication insights from Doug Escher, President of  Dale Carnegie Rochester, NY, Boston, MA, and Buffalo, NY.

What Is (And Isn't) a CISO with Matthew Lang

Matthew Lang, former CISO at SECU, former CISO of 3D Systems, and former Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy, comes on down to the Ranch to talk about what it really means to be a CISO. Many folks wear the title of CISO, but the role itself is still often considered a confusing mixed bag when talking about what it entails and who should have this role. Matthew walks through what a CISO is, what a CISO isn't, and where the bridges between the CISO role and other roles in the company should be.   Timecoded Guide: [00:00] Defining what a CISO isn't in order to discover what a CISO is [06:45] Finding the bridges between CISO & other company roles   [12:12] Getting things clear between CISO, COO, CIO, and CEO [16:20] Understanding a CISO's peers & meeting with security points of contact [24:49] What the CISO role should be & solidifying the CISO definition    Sponsor Links: Thank you to our sponsor Axonius for bringing this episode to life! Manual asset inventory just doesn't cut it anymore. That's where Axonious comes in. Take control of security complexities by uncovering gaps in your organization. Sign up for a free walk through of the platform at Axonius.com/Get-A-Tour   What is the CISO not?  The role of CISO, or Chief Information Security Officer, is nuanced and occasionally complicated to define. However, in Matthew's opinion, the things that a CISO absolutely is not is (1) a BISO, or Business Information Security Office, and on the other hand, (2) someone with no experience in information security. The strongest CISOs Matthew has come across know how to combine information security experience with an understanding of business, all while being guided by a desire to protect the company and prevent incidents.  “The CISO is a preventer of something bad happening at the organization. You can't prevent every breach, it's never going to happen, but if the CISO is involved, he can possibly prevent a merger or acquisition that is not in the best interest of the company.”   Who should the CISO be interfacing with as we bridge in and out of that defined role? To be an effective CISO, Matt believes that you have to build strong relationships with individuals in departments like legal and HR. Referring to them as security points of contact, Matthew explains that keeping in touch with these individuals can give the CISO the full scope of the company. Additionally, Matthew says that a CISO should always be friends with the COO, or Chief Operating Officer, because those roles have essential communication between one another.  “If your company is large enough to have a chief operating officer, the CISO and the COO should be the best of friends, because they rely on each other more than they realize.”   How does the Board of Directors shape and influence what the CISO is and isn't? The Board of Directors' involvement with a company's CISO can be just as nuanced as the CISO role itself. Matt explains that the largest gaps between a CISO and the Board they have to report to are due to either a weak board structure or a misunderstanding of security amongst Board members. In Matthew's experience, being thorough in security explanations with transparency about topics that members may not know helps to bridge the gap and develop a stronger and more positive relationship between the CISO and Board.  “I think, personally, CISOs struggle a lot with their presentations to the Board of Directors, because they don't really know what information the Board wants and the Board won't ask them questions.”   What should be the role of the CISO? While a large majority of the conversation in this episode is about what a CISO isn't, Matthew defines what a CISO is using the words “preventer” and “leader.” A CISO should prevent risky behaviors that are not in the best interest of a company, and they lead the cybersecurity division of a company through establishing security and governance practices. Overall, CISOs help a business to meet goals and go where it wants to go safely and effectively, like a good brake system on a high-end car.  “There's a lot of different responsibilities a CISO could have, but I'm gonna say the role is cybersecurity leadership. They should be responsible for establishing the right security and governance type practices, and a framework to scale the business.”  ------------- Links: Learn more about Matthew Lang's work with the SECU Follow Allan Alford on LinkedIn and Twitter Purchase a Cyber Ranch Podcast T-Shirt at the Hacker Valley Store  Continue this conversation on our Discord Listen to more from the Hacker Valley Studio and The Cyber Ranch Podcast

This week Joe is joined by Navy Veteran, Educator, and business owner, Bill Hoopes. Bill served for 16 years, finding success as a recruiter and ultimately reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Prior to his naval service,  Bill dropped out of high school to help his Mom with bills and earned his GED. It was during this time he first experienced the restaurant business and the daily challenges it brings. Now Bill is the owner of the first Capital Tacos franchise, a quick service restaurant brand that is expanding on local success. Bill shares the challenges he faced transitioning from active duty after 16 years of service and the experience of starting his own business; using his lessons learned from the Navy and leveraging his wife's skills as an educator.  Learn more about Capital Tacos here.  About Our Guest  Bill Hoopes opted for helping his mother pay the bills over school growing up. A decision he doesn't regret at all. Though, he did eventually choose to return to education, enrolling in culinary school to hone the craft of cuisine and good food. He took that passion for food to the Navy, where he served for nearly two decades, whipping up food for his fellow soldiers all along the way. He then took the discipline and rigors inherent to military culture to guide him in his next adventure - which was a journey of entrepreneurship. He took over a local softball business in Tampa, while working as a teacher alongside his wife. And in the most exciting move yet, became the very first franchisee in the country for the nationally-awarded Capital Tacos QSR brand - paving the way and setting the stage for other entrepreneurs nationwide to follow in his footsteps.   Join the conversation on Facebook!
