Episode 57 of ‘All About Art': New Kids On The Block - Interviews with 5 Emerging Gallerists in London (Hew Hood, Helen Neven, Maribelle Bierens, Cedric Bardawil, & Jack Trodd) In the past two years in London (2022 and 2023) we have seen a massive surge in small galleries opening across the city. Instead of interviewing one emerging gallerist about why they chose now to take the plunge and open their gallery, I had the opportunity to speak to 5 new gallerists in London. I ask each gallerist 4 questions: Introduce themselves and say more about their gallery. What inspired them to open a gallery in London. What type of art the gallery strives to champion and how they have positioned themselves in the growing gallery landscape in the city. What is one thing they wish they could tell their younger selves when entering the sector as a gallerist.  I start off at [05:22] in North London to see Hew Hood at Hew Hood Gallery in Islington At [17:35] I then went East to see Helen Neven at Neven Gallery in Bethnal Green At [28:08] back down to Fitzovia is where I visited Maribelle Bierens at Night Cafe Gallery At [38:20] to Soho to see Cedric Bardawil at his eponymous gallery up on the first floor of a building on Old Compton Street At [48:46] I sat down with Jack Trodd who runs BWG Gallery, a nomadic gallery that had a home on 13 Soho Square right off of Oxford Street in 2023 but has conducted exhibitions all around London, north, south, east, and west, and will continue to do so in 2024. Hiyer. How are ya? Hope you're alright this week. Don't really know what say about this one. It's sad, and brutal, but incredibly honest. For anyone who has experienced grief that they haven't fully processed, it's all too relatable. This week's guest is the amazing human Jill Halfpenny. You might know Jill from Coronations Street, Eastenders or Waterloo Road, or, for those of you that remember the early days of Byker Grove, she played Nicola Dobson throughout her teenage years. We sat down with Jill on a bench in Soho Square (sorry about the construction work noise in the background this week) on a very hot day and heard her stories. Jill has experienced and come through some difficult times and she bears her scars with dignity and passion. She talks candidly about her losses and her struggles as a young actress growing up in the North East of England. She and Craig discuss the pressures of small talk, getting stuff thrown at you on the bus, unprocessed trauma, people-pleasing, being bulletproof and loads, loads more. Universal Music Ireland are delighted to announce the release of ‘The Last Goodbye’ – a collection of Christie’s beautifully crafted hits, re-recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. The album, released November 16th , presents Christie’s unique vocals accompanied by the 45 piece orchestra. This one-disc collection will feature 10 classic titles including the timeless version of ‘Messenger Boy’ sung in that unique delicate Kerry voice taken from his first ever LP. ‘Oh Jealous Heart’ and ‘Soho Square’ both get new treatment with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra creating that effortless and exhilarating accompaniment. The record also features some of his most beautifully penned songs including ‘Remember Me’ and not forgetting the country influenced ‘All The Lies That You Told Me’ (which had been a huge success as a single for Frances Black). The album also includes two beautiful duets with daughter Hermione on ‘Every Time A Star Falls’ featured on “A Friend of Mine” and ‘If You Were To Fall (And I Was To Fall In Love With You)’ taken from his multi-platinum selling album “A Year In The Life”.Christie Hennessy has been at the forefront of Irish music and folk music, his career spanning over 30 years and now fans will get to hear his wonderful songs and marvellous lyrics as the colourful legend lives on. Family always mattered hugely to Christie and his children Hermione, Tim and Amber became an increasingly central part of the story. They were all singers and musicians and they loved the creative interplay with him. Hermione recalls of her father “he took people on an emotional journey – from every high of happiness, through great, side-splitting laughter, to every touching piece of sadness… but as always with a sense of possibility and renewal.”The RTÉ Concert Orchestra were conducted on the album by Gavin Maloney who has worked with Ulster Orchestra, Crash Ensemble and National Chamber Choir. Gavin Moloney teamed up along-side Christie’s son Tim Hennessy orchestrator, producer and mix engineer for the album. Carrying on his father’s legacy and fulfilling his Dad’s dream to hear his songs performed by an orchestra. One of Christie’s very favourite albums was Harry Neilssen’s 'A Little Touch of Schmillson 'in the night…. and here it is realised…. but with his beautiful songs. This episode is supported by SuirDzign & Viking PromotionsTo subscribe to the podcast, go to 'Apple Podcasts' or 'Google Podcasts' or wherever you get your podcasts.Click on ‘subscribe’. "I wasn’t at the stadium in Lyon. I was watching the game on a not-so-big TV screen in a pub near Soho Square in central London, and Japan still went out of the tournament as the bottom of the group losing all three games. But there, I witnessed Japan making a mark, albeit a small one, in the world of football. After going 2-0 down, we scored a goal, the greatest joy in the game of football – our first World Cup goal. "To non-Japanese eyes, it might have looked a mere consolation late in the second half. It was quite a simple goal, too: a cross from the left was headed back across and the ball was met in the six-yard box. Yet, to us, it was a goal screaming, “We’re here in the World Cup!” I also happened to make my presence known in the pub as soon as the ball was in the back of the net by shouting, “Yeah!” and punching the air with delight… alone."
