What happens when a casual golfer turns a fun idea into a full-blown brand? Scott Taube started with one simple concept: a deck of cards designed to be played on the golf course. That's it. No e-commerce background. No manufacturing experience. Just curiosity, scrappy action, and a clear sense of fun. A few years later? He's running branded tournaments, landing corporate gigs, going viral on social media, and partnering with brands like Lowe's and Liquid Death. In this episode, you'll hear: The moment he knew he had to stop just talking about the idea How he got the first batch produced without ever seeing a physical sample Lessons in building your brand through humor, consistency, and virality What made one of their TikTok videos rack up 1 million+ views How corporate clients like Lowe's and Liquid Death found him How that one deck of cards spun out into new income streams and brand extensions The mindset that keeps him moving forward—even when things get messy If you're building your brand—or just sitting on an idea you've talked about too long—Scott's story of building Bad Cards Fore Good Golfers is your nudge to start. In this episode, we're putting cohost Nate on trial—brand trial, that is. Sarah, Nate, and Tether Insight's new AI research intern, DEX play The Tattoo Test, a brutal brand-building game show where each level challenges Nate to prove his brand is worthy of obsession, devotion... and maybe even a little ink. Guided by Sarah and judged (mercilessly) by Dex—our British, sarcasm-laced AI intern—Nate must face: Level 1: Pick a fight (a real one) Level 2: Design a ritual, not a funnel Level 3: Write a tattoo-worthy tagline Level 4: Turn product into identity Level 5: Face the final boss: Would anyone actually tattoo this brand? It's fast. It's fun. It's uncomfortably honest. And it just might help you build the kind of brand that commands cult-leader status. In this episode of Mastering Modern Selling, hosts Carson and Tom dive deep with James Buckley, host of the Sell Better daily sales show. James shares how going live every day transformed the way sales professionals learn, engage, and sell in today's fast-paced digital world. He walks through his journey, the shift from traditional selling to content-driven engagement, and how sales teams can stay ahead by becoming practitioners—actively doing what they teach.1. Consistency Builds Authority & TrustJames and his team went from occasional webinars to a daily sales show, proving that consistent content drives engagement and credibility. The show started small but quickly became a go-to resource for sales professionals.Lesson: Showing up regularly (whether through content, calls, or engagement) makes you a trusted expert in your field.2. Stop Chasing—Create Demand InsteadJames emphasizes that salespeople should provide value first, rather than immediately trying to sell. By sharing insights, helping others, and engaging meaningfully, potential buyers naturally come to you when they need your solution.Lesson: Be the person buyers come to for guidance, instead of always chasing cold leads.3. The Phone Is Hot AgainWith inboxes flooded with AI-generated emails, James points out that the phone has made a comeback as an effective sales tool. He still makes cold calls and actively demonstrates outreach techniques, proving that direct human connection still wins.Lesson: Use modern tools, but don't ignore proven sales tactics like personalized calls and relationship-building.4. Sales Is More Than Just Closing DealsJames describes modern selling as more than just making sales—it's about being a valuable resource, mastering time and task management, and adapting quickly. His structured calendar and disciplined workflow ensure he balances live shows, sales, and engagement without burnout.Lesson: If you manage your time right, you can sell effectively while also creating content and engaging with your audience.5. Face Your Fears & Keep TestingOne of the biggest lessons James learned is that fear holds many sellers back—whether it's making cold calls, appearing on video, or trying new strategies. He encourages sales pros to test new approaches constantly and embrace change.Lesson: Get uncomfortable, experiment with new sales methods, and always be learning from the results. James Buckley proves that modern selling isn't just about transactions—it's about transformation. By going live daily, staying close to his audience, and constantly refining his approach, he's built a community that trusts him. His advice? Stay consistent, provide real value, and never stop learning. Don't miss out—your next big idea could be just one episode away! Chad Decker and his family has built one of the most recognizable BBQ brands in North Texas if not all of Texas. It's a destination restaurant for many visiting the area. The coolest thing about it though is how they built it and where Chad came from. This is a story I love to see because he built a thriving business and is now able to live his dream of roping and ranching. Chad was raised around and involved in ranching and roping his whole life and knowing he wasn't cut out for school he got a job to make a living. Chad soon found out he wasn't cut out for that either and decided to pursue a career that involved horses. Through years of hustle training horses, flagging ropings, working different jobs, and anything he could do to support his family he finally came up with the idea of a BBQ restaurant. There was an obvious need for BBQ in Stephenville because they opened with a BANG (literally) and stayed busy but there was a lot of learning to be had about the business. Through lots of hours Chad and his family learned the business inside and out and have been able to expand and replace theirselves in the business. Chad is now living his dream of raising rope horses and ranching through Hardway Land and Livestock. Look out for their horses and if you're in the area you definitely need to stop at Hard Eight BBQ. This week on the show Karen is joined by Viola Levy, journalist, founder of branding agency ‘Smart, Beauty Creative” and host of the Smart Beauty podcast, a show for beauty business owners who are looking to hone their brand voice. Getting the story of your brand and your products right is essential, and can be the difference between success and failure. That's why, in this interview, Viola and Karen cover all you need to know about transforming your business from a retailer to a storyteller. KEY TAKEAWAYS Viola started her career as a journalist and found that a lot of the companies she was writing about were in the beauty sector. Whilst doing this work she noticed a gap in the market which, as she explains here, led her to set up her own company. Karen and Viola discuss the incredible rise of indie brands over the last decade, what this means for consumers, but also, how the bigger designer brands have reacted to this growth. As Karen often states, and Viola agrees, creating a story around your scents is the most important thing you can do in terms of marketing. Viola explains why this is a ‘non negotiable' and gives her insights into how to make this effective. Historically, brands have put all of their time and effort into creating a fragrance and then launched into the marketplace. However, as Viola explains, there is so much more value in bringing your customers along on the journey from day one. BEST MOMENTS “There's so much choice out there now, and that's a great thing. People like to change their perfume as often as they change their clothes.” “Brands have to have an opinion and a voice, they need to show they're passionate about more than just selling their products.” “AI is a great tool, but it shouldn't be in the driving seat. You'll always need a human touch.” EPISODE LINKS Smart Beauty Website Smart Beauty Podcast Smart Beauty Instagram Smart Beauty Linkedin Smart Beauty Email VALUABLE RESOURCES Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind ABOUT THE GUEST Having worked in the beauty industry for over 15 years, Viola is an award-winning journalist, copywriter and brand consultant. As an established writer, Viola has contributed to all sectors of the beauty world, with articles appearing in Vogue, Glamour, The Evening Standard, and Refinery29. In addition she has written copy for several major beauty brands and retailers, including Aromatherapy Associates, 111SKIN, Cult Beauty, Boots, By Terry, and Superdrug, and in 2019, she won a Fragrance Foundation Jasmine Award for Best Short Piece and was shortlisted for Best Social Engagement. She has also written global trend reports for major forecasting agency WGSN, focusing on how consumer needs and habits have changed since the global pandemic. From her years of experience, Viola has seen the beauty world rapidly change over the past decade. The way brands speak to customers has evolved. It's less about playing on women's low self-esteem, inventing problems (and products to “solve” them) or peddling false promises and miracles in jars. It's more about feeling better (not just by looking better), intelligent discussions and promoting inclusivity. Which is why she set up Smart Beauty Creative to create the next generation of forward-thinking, feminist brands, helping to pave the way for a new, diverse and more enlightened beauty industry. ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way. Karen has inspired thousands of students to explore their olfactory sense and create their own personalised fragrances. With extensive product development experience in both the commercial perfumery and the organic skincare industry, Karen is able to offer a unique insight into creating natural and mixed media fragrances for fine fragrance, room scents and skincare/bodycare products using commercial perfumery techniques. Karen is also a certified meditation teacher and has a passion for helping people to create daily rituals that integrate scent with other modalities to shift state and increase your sense of wellbeing. 2 years ago, I made one of the best decisions I've ever made - rebranding my fitness company after 5 years of business. I was scared that rebranding so "late" in the game might hurt our brand recognition, but not only did it absolutely not do that, but shifiting from being a business to being a true brand, and emphasizing what I now refer to as the "Brand Big 3" - Values, Vision, and Vibes, we attracting a stronger ideal client base and community, have more cohesion in every level of the business (from internal operations to client relations), and have consistently been able to sign higher-paying clients that are also dream matches for our coaches.
