Welcome back to another episode of reflections - this week dive into conversations with John Bull, Owen Eastwood, Lisa Jacob and Ray Goggins. We hear from our excellent guests on the topic of Psychological Safety including: - (6:07) John Bull: Specialist in High Performance Leadership and Teams, Head of High Performance at Management Futures - (8:04) Owen Eastwood: Performance Coach, and Author of 'Belonging: The Ancient Code of Togetherness' - (15:10) Lisa Jacob: Team Manager at Hockey Ireland, and Co-Owner of Hidden Strength - (20:11) Ray Goggins: Director at Coreskill Training, Chief Instructor RTE television Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week - and author of 'Ranger 22' Our lens focuses this week on Psychological Safety first popularised by the great Amy Edmondson. This is a huge part of our current work with Hauora around enlightening, educating and empowering individuals in the performance wellbeing space in Ireland and abroad. We hope this medium allows you to take the lessons from the very best and apply them in your life. Our key takeaways from this episode are: 1 – Vulnerability and creating a space to see people for who they truly are, will allow groups of individuals to break through the glass ceilings and truly work effectively as a team 2 – We can create focus and cohesion more easily on stable teams, but what about when things are uncertain and changing? We need to create a culture that promotes teaming to navigate the ever-changing world and unpredicted challenges; 3 – Look back to understand where you're going. Note all the good in your buildup…it can help reveal your progress, to drive you on to new heights Thanks for listening and as always please rate, review, and share.
Ray Goggins discusses Special Forces - Ultimate Hell Week
Tommy has spent all of his adult life in the fitness industry in one way or another. As an instructor in various Armagh gyms, he now teaches in the South Lake Leisure Centre where his two daughters are regular visitors - as is his wife who runs marathons for fun. He played football for St Paul's and has been part of the management team in Down club Ballyholland for a number of years, but Tommy still finds the time to compete in ironman triathlons and is constantly looking for new challenges. So much so that he signed up for RTE's Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week in 2019. Tommy was on the reserve list and was called up as competitor number 24 – his name throughout the gruelling physical and mental endurance test. As well as all of that, Tommy found the time to take up part-time ambulance driving at the start of the pandemic and volunteer in the community, organising and delivering food parcels. Tommy learned from the school of hard knocks and today he speaks to Armagh I about his upbringing by his late father who inspired him to be the best at what he does, his love of football, Hell Week, as one of the hardest yet rewarding challenges he has ever taken on, and why fitness is for everyone at every age.

When Irish international Stephanie Roche was preparing to take part in the toughest show on Irish telly, she could never have imagined the mental strain that would have come with it. [audio mp3="https://media.radiocms.net/uploads/2021/09/10130027/StephanieRoche_1009.mp3"][/audio] Speaking to Dermot and Dave, Stephanie revealed the physical preparation she undertook before joining Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week and how at the end of it all, it was the mental strength that was most important. Stephanie, who is taking part for Diabetes Ireland, revealed some of the challenges the contestants undertook and how she had no more than two hours sleep at a time across the week. And of course, as a Manchester United superfan, Stephanie spoke about how emotional she's feeling about Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford. You can catch the chats by clicking play above, and follow Stephanie on Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week on Wednesdays at 9:35 on RTE1.
Today we spoke with Ray Goggins - Director at Coreskill Training, Chief Instructor RTE television Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week - and author of 'Ranger 22'. Ray served in the Special Forces Task Unit as a Senior NCO, as part of the Irish Defence Forces. He has vast operational experience and went on many deployments to hostile environments and conflict zones. A specialist in anti-terrorism and hostage rescue, maritime counter terrorism and combat diving, Ray was an expert in surveillance/ reconnaissance and intelligence...and a special ops instructor, physical trainer and manager. We started this chat about his new book 'Ranger 22 - lessons from the front', and why he had to write that book; Ray explains how the knowledge he acquired over the years has been distilled to lessons that we all can understand and use. Ray explains what his business 'Coreskill training' is all about...creating a mindset to be better, where performance, passion and purpose unite. For Ray, mindset and mental fortitude is what separates those who make it and those who struggle. We hear amazing stories of resilience and determination from the RTE show 'Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week' - where 24 civilian recruits take part in a gruelling special forces selection course, designed by Ray and other members of the elite unit, the Army Ranger Wing...the Irish equivalent of the SAS and Navy SEALs. We unpack composure, a superpower according to Ray, confidence, team building strategies - and the essence of leadership.
Keith's running journey started in 2016 with his daughter Alanna, running the Dublin Marathon with her in 2017, capturing and captivating the hearts of the nation as they completed the event together with Keith pushing Alanna in her chair over the 26.2 mile distance. Our very own drone enthusiast Charles Miller discovers that there's plenty to think about when filming with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), or drones as they are better known. In this podcast, Charles is joined by experienced drone pilot Mya Padget and BBC series producer Graham Cooper, who uses drones for his documentaries. We find out why you may want to use a drone for your shoot and what you need to do before you can even get it into the air. We take questions from you, including how badly drones are affected by the weather, and cover the training you'll need, CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) accreditation, legal implications and health and safety considerations, including the need to recce your site. Mya talks about "valuable consideration". That's the legal term that makes you a commercial operator as opposed to an amateur. As Mya says "working commercially as a drone operator doesn't just mean working on a BBC documentary. If you shoot drone footage and monetise it on YouTube, or film footage for selling a friend's house and they later buy you a drink, that may count as valuable consideration". Will getting shots from a drone add to your story or not? We look at the editorial issues you'll need to think about before using a drone. As Graham says, the story is "first and foremost, then how will you get the shots for the story. Drones are just another tool to do this". And finally, if you're keen on flying and filming with drones, Mya suggests you go out and buy an amateur micro-drone as "if you can fly that, you can fly anything". Graham suggests you need to think about what the shots you are after and then find a good drone flying team. And Mya tells us how you can get drone shots in a built up area such as London without having to fly it at all… Mya Padget is a licensed commercial drone operator and co-director of Stronholt Film Productions. Her aerial film work has ranged from being an aerial director and camera and gimbal operator for a supermarket advert to filming floods in Oxfordshire as a drone pilot for BBC South Today. Graham Cooper is a series producer and director for the BBC who has used drones in his productions, including Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week, David Dimbleby's Britain and the Sea and Royal Wives at War.
