How do you transform deep trauma into purpose and meaning? Dave Pounds, founder of Be Remarkable, shares his powerful journey from personal tragedy and PTSD to creating a life and coaching program rooted in resilience and fulfilment. Dave discusses the impact of finding purpose, moving through addiction and the lessons learned from decades of searching for healing. With raw honesty, inspiration and actionable insights Dave reveals why it's essential to feel the meaning.   KEY TAKEAWAY ‘If you layer your skills and your passions, you can deliver a purpose that makes a difference to somebody else. The sense of meaning you get back from delivering that purpose, once you've got that, in my view, I think you've cracked one of life's biggest challenges and it all begins to make sense.'   BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS* The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk - https://amzn.eu/d/bbs8emQ The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy - https://amzn.eu/d/4Zktl71 Belonging by Owen Eastwood - https://amzn.eu/d/1oUbcq0   ABOUT DAVE At 12, Dave's world was shattered when he witnessed the murder of his mum. Left to ‘carry on as normal,' he battled PTSD, fear, and at its worst, alcohol abuse and rehab. Yet, through self-leadership, he built resilience and found meaning by living out his purpose—helping others do the same. Now, through A Design for Life, his self-leadership coaching program, Dave guides individuals and teams to discover their values, define their purpose, and build the tools to thrive. As a performance coach to England's national football team, the Royal Ballet and more, Eastwood taps into his Māori heritage to help groups foster a sense of togetherness and drive performance. For Allbirds co-founder and chief innovation officer Tim Brown, co-founder and chief innovation officer at Allbirds, a company that has gone on a rollercoaster of ups and downs since it IPO in 2021, his former life as a professional football player for New Zealand has taught him lessons he's brought from the pitch to the boardroom. “When we want to create a high performing environment, we make an undertaking to each other that we will do nothing to diminish the dignity of every person, and when we all leave this experience or whatever it is together, our dignity will be enhanced,” Eastwood told Brown stage at BoF VOICES 2023. “For me, therefore, you need to understand the story of the people you work with.”This week on The BoF Podcast, Brown and Eastwood unpack how companies can drive high performance while maintaining a supportive culture.Key Insights:While working with the British Olympic team, Eastwood encouraged the athletes to find a level of investment in their own story by creating a film which showcased various Olympians all the way back from 1896. “The Olympians themselves just took selfies the whole time with these images of those ancestors who they in particular could relate to, maybe something that shared their own identity story. I think it opened their eyes.”Allbirds was founded in 2024 with a mission to make sustainable footwear, but 10 years on, Brown said that he's learned how important it is to stay true to that internal story, both in communicating with employees and consumers. “As a creative person, as a storyteller, are we doing enough within our organisations to tell stories internally in the same way that we're telling them outside of the organisation?” he asked. Eastwood said those sorts of strong, dynamic, internal stories are key for everyone on a team. “You've got to create rituals and traditions where it's reiterated because actually it's not just for the benefit of new joiners, it's for the benefit of us who have been here a long time.” Additional resources The BoF Podcast | Allbirds' Tim Brown on Learning to Lead With ResilienceAllbirds Co-CEO On Why DTC Brands Are Going MultichannelAre DTC Brands Pulling Off Brick-and-Mortar? Born in the UK, raised in Canada, he lives in Dunedin, New Zealand with his four children (and dog Dougal).Resources discussed in this episode:Ange PostecoglouAnders EricssonBelonging by Owen EastwoodThe Living Company by Arie De Geus--Contact Tim Sweet | Team Work Excellence: WebsiteLinkedIn: Tim SweetInstagramLinkedin: Team Work ExcellenceContact Richard Young | Simplify2Perform: Website: simplify2perform.comLinkedin: Simplify2Perform--Transcript:Richard 00:01Hoping is a flag for evidence that's missing and knowing means the gap has been filled. So, it's a good word generally, universally for human nature to have hope but in the performance game is another trigger. And there needs to be a leader who spots that and says, Well, I hope it all comes off. And then we're looking at opportunity. And the opportunity is typically inside the gap and that could flag a gap in evidence. So, what don't we know? Tim 00:32I'd like to ask you some questions. Do you consider yourself the kind of person that gets things done? Are you able to take a vision and transform that into action? Are you able to align others towards that vision and get them moving to create something truly remarkable? If any of these describe you, then you, my friend, are a leader, and this show is all about and all for you. Thanks for joining us for the 27th episode of the Sweet on Leadership podcast. Tim 01:04Well, hi, again, everybody. This is going to be one of my favourite episodes. I know that I'm confident, I don't have to wonder about that. I don't have to guess, I don't have to hope. I know it's going to be one of my favorite episodes. Why? Because I've got evidence. I've been with the wonderful person that's in front of me here today. Before I know what we're capable of. And I am fully confident. Please let me welcome Richard Young, to the podcast. Richard 01:34A right on Tim. Wow, what an intro. What an intro and same back to you too. So, always a pleasure joining, you ask deep questions and yet connect some dots. And we always get somewhere, I learn a heap.  Tim 01:47Well, the feeling is mutual. But before we get going too much for those of you that haven't checked out Richard in previous episodes, I'd like you to introduce yourself. Could you tell us who you are? Who do you serve? And what do you mean to those people?  Richard 02:04Yeah. Right on so. So, I live in New Zealand. I'm Canadian, you can tell the accent. And so I live in the south of New Zealand with my four kids by the beach here and worked in high-performance sports, primarily the Olympics my whole life. So, from an athlete, coach through to leader, and researcher all in three countries as well. Three years ago, I decided to do some of my own work, I felt without the kind of bureaucracy and the dogma around me, I could help more people faster. And so that's what I've been doing. So, I work primarily with sports leaders, so senior leaders into experts in sports, they don't necessarily run the sport, some could be ahead of medicine, and some do run the Olympic Committees and things for different countries. And I help them streamline their approach to high performance. So, typically, when you've been in the game a long time, I call it winners bloat, they've got so many good ideas, that one before, it's hard to filter. Because they can make a good case for everything that they've done before you get enough people in the room like that. And it's a real bloated place of great ideas. And so I help come in and streamline big rocks down to even bigger rocks. So, there's only a few of them. And there's a pattern in repeat medalists that I noticed. And they learned that at the end, and so I help people at the beginning, figure that out sooner.  Tim 03:33Awesome. And there's so many parallels, anybody who is listening, that's worked with me, you're gonna hear a lot of similarities. And that's because you and I come from very similar schools of thought. And we've trained together in certain practices. And so the whole idea of resolving conflict, and aligning tensions, and all of that is something that you and I are all over. So, before we got going here, I sent you a video and I thought I could really kick off our conversation today. And I was really inspired by what this person was saying, and I thought you get a real kick out of it. This is a quote from Ange Postecoglou. He's one of the premier league coaches for Tottenham MFC. And he's got a really interesting take when a reporter asks him, do you ever visualize yourself hoisting a trophy over your head? So, let's take a listen. And then we'll come back together we'll give it a talk.  Reporter 04:24Do you ever picture yourself lifting trophies as a more general question?Ange 04:28I got real pictures, mate. Quite a few of them. Just look at the ones I've got. I've earned them, I'm not lucky. I love winning, mate. That's all I've done my whole career. And now, don't say that dismissively that I've got pictures and I don't have them on my ceiling mate, as you suggested, but that's what drives me every year. I start the year hoping that at the end of the year, there is a picture of me with a team and lifting a trophy. That's what I've tried to do my whole career. And I've got plenty of evidence of that. So, that's what my sort of intent is here. It's not something that I have to visualize. It's what I do. Tim 05:14So, there's the video, what are your first thoughts when you hear that, Richard? Richard 05:19I hear the master in that leader. So, he's pointing out something very particular to the best in the game is that they do have a picture. So, Anders Ericsson, did all the research on you know, 10,000 hours and things and he had said, to become an expert, there needs to be a benchmark around you, you need to see what high performance looks like. And so some new sports of the Olympics struggle with that, you know, surfing and breaking and things like that. There's no benchmark yet. Whereas the other ones, you can see all these world records dropping, because they know the benchmark, they've seen the picture, and sometimes they're in the picture. So, what he's talking about there is, you wouldn't hire a coach who hasn't won before, is another way of putting what he's saying there is Tottenham would not hire someone who hasn't won before. So, he does have a lot of pictures. And you don't want someone learning on the fly, you want them tuning and synthesizing but not starting from zero. So, the best in the game are like him, they do have championship pictures or winning pictures around them. They may be aiming he says, aiming for better, and you know, the continuous improvement and all those things you hear about leaders, but their past is a record of victories, they have a history of winning. And that's what we find in the performance leaders in the sustained metal systems. The group, the people, the athletes are surrounded by people who have won before. And the sports that have a barren land of people who won before, they're doing their best. They're putting in a massive effort, but there's a misdirection on the main things. Tim 07:02You know, it's funny when I think of teams that I work with, it's a very common behavior for people to chart a win, really get something right, do something wonderful. And then steamroll, right past it on to the next thing, and not even take a moment to record or to acknowledge that that was a win. And then when it comes around the next time where they are having to do perhaps something very similar again, they almost can't recall that they had already, you know, had this experience. And you've talked to me before about being able to see those wins because Ange didn't start out being a Premier League winner. Those wins had to be found elsewhere. Right? So, can you talk a little bit about that for us? Because I love your perspective on this. Richard 07:53Yeah. So, his win, there's another great video of him because he was a premiership. I think he was a premiership player as well. And there's a shot of him in the dugout, and this is maybe last year with Tottenham. And the ball, you can tell based on his vision that someone's kicked the ball up high, and it's coming out of bounds, and it lands right beside him and he traps the ball. He's in a suit. Tim 08:17Oh, right. I've seen that body memory whap. Richard 08:21That's right. Yeah, taps the ball and pushes it out to the field, and just shrugs his shoulders at the crowd. Who are you, I don't know if it's a standing ovation. But anyways, just so impressive, but there's the premiership history in him. And so in sports, there's this myth. And it's important to bust myths as well that you have to have been a premiership performer, or a championship performer to be a champion leader or a champion coach. And that's like asking a leader to be the best at you know, every department, he or she manages, and impossible. And so sometimes the best athletes do not make the best leaders. They can't see out of their own self because you have to be very self-absorbed to be an athlete and then you have to see wider to be a leader and a coach. And so if you've got winning those winning they need to be with people, not just you with a metal, Look at me go. It's the leaders and the change-makers that see like him, him lifting a trophy with a team. That's what he said it's not him with a trophy. It's with the team and so that perspective for leadership is the win is on us, it's not me, is vital. And you don't often see that in the leaders who are just working their way up. It's still about me they're still trying to prove like a new athlete selected to a team. It's natural to try to prove yourself first. They found that I did research on the All Blacks, they wanted me to review their caps, they call them caps here is how many times you've been in a test match, a championship game. And so the players under 15 caps, the players between 15 and 40. And then there's a cut-off that you're a senior player after 40 and someone like Richie McCaw, who was the captain down here. And by the way, rugby is crazy down here. It's like hockey in Canada. Everything is about rugby. Even in the town I'm in when the World Cup was here, there was going to be four games, not one of them an All Blacks game. There was a referendum of petition put out to there's only 120,000 people in this town. Should we spend 150 million on an indoor stadium for these four World Cup games, It'll take us 50 years to pay it off. It was a unanimous, Yes. So, and that's what we have is an indoor stadium. So, Richie McCall, I number of caps. But the difference was, it was all me under 15 caps. It was all us but I'm not sure where I fit between 15 and 40. And it's all us. And I know where I fit after 40. So, their picture changed from a me to a we. And so that coach there that you just quoted, interesting, he points out, it's a we picture and same with a McCall, but it's him with the team and the cup. Tim 11:23Him with a team with the cup. And it's funny, because as you were saying that simplistically, I was thinking, Well, does a person have to have success as a leader going forward? No, not necessarily. I mean, this is why being part of that us as a junior, whether it's a junior person in business, or in education, or in sport, being part of it, you have to be part of the us, and then you have to think in terms of that collective thinking. And, you know, we often try to inspire that in leaders that they think, you know, around who are they serving, and that they don't get too myopic on their own needs, obviously. But this is actually a precursor for them to be able to even achieve those next levels. It's so much more than just a good habit. It actually is their conceptualization of success before success. And what does that look like? And boy, you know, I love talking to you, man, because every time there's so many examples, that, sure I may have helped people get past but it brings new light things and new realizations. And I'm right now I'm thinking of an example of a leader who was struggling. And this just explains so much that ego picture had gotten in the way that I picture had gotten in the way. Where they had all sorts of examples for WE wins, but they weren't accessing them. I mean, it speaks to one other thing. And I use one of your philosophies in my coaching practice. And it's all about that performance mindset. And once you have this experience, and again, as Ange says, in that clip, he has pictures of himself winning, he doesn't need to wonder if he can do this. You know, and you talk about hope versus know. And I always talk about in business, hope is a four letter word, don't tell me you hope something is gonna happen. Don't tell me you think it might happen. Like, let's access the data and everything we know, to take a very good educated guess of whether or not this is going to happen. And nothing's better than experience and evidence of it happening before. So, when you are working with these teams, what kind of an example would you give us about really helping somebody bridge that gap between hope and know? Richard 13:44Yeah, yeah. A lot of it is evidence-focused, right? So, the knowing means there are metrics around me or a picture that I can see this has happened and it can happen again. And so that conviction that brings for people, the data that I tracked it, six Olympic cycles now have medalists and non-medalists in a yachting group here who had won three Olympics. And they said hoping is a flag for evidence that's missing and knowing means the evidence the gap has been filled. So, it's a good word, generally, universally for human nature to have hope. But in the performance game is another trigger. And there needs to be a leader who spots that and says, Well, in the end, I hope it all comes off. So, before the Olympics, I hope I get lane eight.Tim 14:40Screeching tires. Richard 14:41That's right. Yeah. So, there's the second question that gets asked. So, performance leaders ask the second question, and then we're looking at opportunity and the opportunity is typically inside the gap and that could flag a gap in evidence So, what don't we know? So, there was one rower who was World Champion, and they started to fade and they became kind of disillusioned with their fitness and their times are wavering and stuff and so the whole support staff thought it was mindset. And so the psych team, an army of good intent, wrapped themselves around her and things then the coach looked and he came at it from the hoping/knowing and he got to investigate what might be under the hood, for he knew her well, also. But it turns out it was and I had this one in the book as well, it turned out it was the evidence that they had numbers for but she wasn't aware of them. And so he just presented those numbers to her every day on how she was tracking. And suddenly, she had evidence that it's not as bad as I thought. Feelings aren't facts, facts are facts. And so suddenly, she progressed and she became the world champion that year. And he knew it wasn't mindset, because you can't hope your way to victory. You do have to have prep, you know, that goes into flow, which we can talk about later.  Tim 16:12For sure. It's funny that you say that, because something that started with me when I used to wrestle, and it's continued through university, and even now, it doesn't happen as often now. But you say, Sorry, what? Please repeat that for me. Feelings…Richard 16:29Feelings aren't facts. Tim 16:30Feelings aren't facts. I have a very physical response when I'm feeling uneasy, or I don't have the facts, or I'm not sure of how something's panning out. I'll get tightness across my back when I was wrestling, this would show up as muscle impingement and stuff like that, right? Like it really got tight. And then all I had to do was kind of rationalize stuff. It sounds so silly, but if I was studying for a test and I was feeling tense, I'd start to feel this tension in my back. And so then I would just take stock of what I knew. And what I didn't know. And as soon as I had a handle on it, and I moved it sort of from that emotional side over to where I could see it. Honestly, sometimes it was like it felt like an injury and it just went away. Within hours. It was gone. And I've had this happen dozens of times over my life. I mean, it's this strange sort of mind-body connection. It sounds a little cheesy. But I felt, you know, I literally felt injured. Through uncertainty, I guess. Richard 17:32Yeah. Yeah. Awesome way to put it. Yeah.  Tim 17:36Well, I don't know if it's that. But it was just, you know when you said that it really gave. And I can imagine for this, this performer, once she had that data was just a deep breath. And like, Wow, I feel better right now. Like the fog just clears and the fog of war lifts and you can see what's in front of you and you remind yourself what your job is. And it's funny, you know, I think you and I've talked about this before, but when we talk about that hope versus knowing, you know, I love that there's always that circle with the pie graphs. And there's this little thin piece that says, we know what we know, these little thin piece that says we know what we don't know. And then there's this massive piece that says we don't know what we don't know. And I always think there's a fourth slice, which is that we forgot what we knew, you know, we actually failed to recognize what we already have learned and committed it to memory. Richard 18:32A friend of mine gave me a great line yesterday because he's a leader in a business. And he said a lot of my staff know what to do, but don't do what they know. Tim 18:42Yeah, no kidding. And that's a great segue, actually into the next question I got for you because you've mentioned the word conviction quite a few times here. Do you draw a distinction between conviction and confidence? Richard 18:55Yeah, so confidence is a frame, a mental frame, it is deeply inside, like your somatic sense of a feeling of being unprepared or something and that twinge in your back. So, conviction is deeply felt. It's just acknowledging and it's systemic, it's wider than me, it's bigger than me. There's something coming together here. My teammates, my staff, my home life, there's a whole picture is conviction, whereas confidence is this. That's right. Yeah, yeah. So, a much bigger piece is conviction. That's really a key difference between the sustained high performers and the rest because they are system builders. And when you have a system behind you, you just know the system's got your back, and suddenly it's conviction. Tim 19:51That's such a great way to put that. And again, when you build that system around people, and of course in the work that we do and the work that I do, so much of it is just helping people become fluent in where they are and what they've got. And that they're part of that system. And that system is around them and that it's functioning. And so really, that is that feeling of being inside something that has a purpose and has a way of operating in a system of support or rules or code or whatever it is, but it's got a way to perform. Now all of a sudden, you are in that second space where you can perform, you're in that, it's not home, something else, it's a different vocation. And you have a role. And I think that that feeling of belonging leads to confidence as much as anything else. Richard 20:39Yeah, yeah. You'd love to read called Belonging. And maybe the listeners would like to read that too, written by a Kiwi. I think he's out in Britain now. But a lot of the rugby group and on this theme of cohesion, and team cohesion is a fantastic book. And there's a difference. You just pointed something out there. To him, the confidence is me. Conviction is we.  Tim 21:06100%. Great. And I'll add this to the show notes. But does that Owen Eastwood?  Richard 21:08Yeah, that's him.Tim 21:10Owen Eastwood. Richard 21:11And he's on LinkedIn, by the way. So connected. I've connected to him. And yeah. Tim 21:17Send me an invite man. Put us together. So, unlock your potential with the ancient code of togetherness. Excellent. Okay, that is on my list for sure. So, I like that cover too, I want them to be a tattoo. Anyway. Awesome. Okay, so what have we covered, we've covered being able to see the wins and distinguish that hope from know that security that gives us and another layer of security, you have brought us into this, me versus we and this ability to access this layer of conviction now that we have purpose and everything else. And that will yield among other things, probably give us a greater sense of confidence individually because we are part of something. They've got to play off each other. I'm sure. So, man, that's fantastic. What's your thinking as were at this point in the conversation?  Richard 22:13Well, I'm not surprised we're connecting some dots here, Tim. So, you know, the synthesis between–Tim 22:14Strong galvanization? Richard 22:20Yeah. You get a couple of system thinkers, there'll be a lot of listeners out there that you know, the system thinking folk at all systems mean is people, places, and things and how they interact. It's just a helicopter view of the environment you're in, the orbit that you're in. And so everything can be framed as a system, even the video you played at the start, we could analyze his conversation, that one line from system thinking. I just got off the phone with a coach who wants some help with their plans for the World Cup. And it's basically system thinking, just to have a reflector pointed out are these really the big rocks? And how do we interconnect people, places and things? So, just good coaching, you know, like you do for your clients and leaders, all we are our system reflectors, really. And we point the lens back at the expert in front of us who knows the context. And that's what sport is. It's a series of experts, some with massive egos, by the way, a whole series of experts, and they need to be coordinated together so that their output is like all the arrows hitting the dartboard. And it's one dartboard. There's not multiple dartboards. So, yeah, that's where you find cohesion produces a team performance. That's the exciting part about sport is particularly team sport, you know, the physiology sports, that's my background, it's pretty straight, you know, you can kind of tell who's going to be within. Like rowing here is the best thing in the world, and their training is repeatedly 98 to 99% of world records. So, that's what they do, just keep going. And so physiology can do that. Whereas in a team, you never know when they're going to lift and just be that different team, you know that, wow, look at that. And there's something exciting. And that business team is just as exciting. Because the same peek, the same flow can happen in a business team. So, you asked what reflect like, what's happening, I can see all of this pointing to business, really, you know, the area that we're in these examples, you're heavy into business, I'm heavy into sport, but the bridge between the two you can you can hear the similarities between them.  Tim 24:38I'm telling you the last few months have seen me crossing over. You know, I've been involved in cycling on that side. And now I'm getting involved in curling and pickleball was the most recent. So, you know, and it all is that sort of expression of well, I think conviction is the word but I love cohesion, finding that synergy, and really helping people be their best selves together kind of thing. I want to have you back and probably before too long, because I want us to have a separate conversation on flow, because that is one of my favourite areas to teach and play with. And then we can have a business focus discussion. Before we wrap up here, it's important to note that as much as we talked about sport, you are making huge inroads into business. So, if you are a business owner, you should really be thinking about checking out Richard, and especially if you're on that side of the pond, what are you dealing with? What are some of the most notable benefits I guess I could say? Or advantages when business owners start to take lessons from what you've learned in sport? Richard 25:42Yeah, so primarily, the high-performing team. So, I know that's a big focus of yours. And in performance– Tim 25:53Now it's sustained high performance, somebody helped light me up to the difference between high performance, anybody can podium once, and sustained high performance. How do we do it over and over again? Do you remember his name? What's his name? That's right, it was Richard Young. Anyway, go ahead, please. Richard 26:13Yeah, so that's where the triangle came from. So, what I use in business and sport, and that's the theme of the next book, which is in finished drafts, so that'll be out in another probably two months. So, the key systemic differences between repeat medalists, sustained high performers, and non, and for us, it's pretty binary on metals and non so we have a pretty easy number to measure if you've got it. But inside that metal is a whole lot of depth if it's sustained. Anyone can win wants, it's actually pretty easy to win an Olympic medal, but to repeat it is totally different. And so they have a different and I don't mean to be little an Olympic medal, by the way, if there's listeners out there who've, you know, put their whole. So all I mean is the system required to do that even a business that achieves you know, they surpass all expectations. It's to repeat that. And you can just feel the difference in that while we got it together. But do we know exactly how we pulled that off, then it's more deliberative, it's sustained. So, the triangle is simplicity, alignment and well-being, so to keep it going, and there's a great book called The Living Company by Arie De Geus. He was the CEO of BP Oil a long time ago. And he was curious why some companies live longer than humans, but most don't. And the ones that live longer, that like past 100 years, they had certain things in common. They weren't connected to the ecology of their environment. They were adaptable, they were thrifty on their finance. So, it was a few things like that. And in sport, that translates to simple, we're not trying to do it all. We know what matters aligned, we're rowing in the same direction not as easy as it sounds when you've got a whole roomful of people who've won before. And then well-being means we're okay and you can feel the difference. You walk into a sport with systemic well-being. It's not gym passes, and they are fit already. But inside, there's a lot of pain in a lot of sport. And so the approach is changing completely in high performance because a lot of disasters that have happened for athletes and staff as well, which happens in other industries, but it's quite public in sport when something bad happens. And so it just means that there's all hands on deck to figure it out. So, that triangle works. And so the translation of that into business is a higher performing team. And you can call on flow, it's not psychological, it's preparation. So yeah, for sure, let's talk about that next time because there's this whole, you know, between us the session on flow, it's a deep, meaningful call to attention. It isn't something psychological. Tim 29:16I know we're going to do a good job on that one. All right. Any working title for the book right now? Richard 29:24Performance Leadership is the as the working title. Yeah. Tim 29:28Stay tuned to both of us because I'll be shouting that one from the rooftops. All right. And if people want to get in touch with you, what's the best way they can get in touch with you? Richard 29:37The website or LinkedIn? So richardnyoung.com is the site that goes to simplify to perform but yeah, richardnyoung it's just a name easy to remember them. Tim 29:52No problem, we'll put it in the show notes so that it's there. And as I asked every one of my guests now. Not the last time you were on, I don't think we started this little tradition. If you had one hope for the athletes, the business owners, the founders, the leaders that are listening today, if you could hope or you wish them… well hope, let's talk about the different kind of hope. What's your wish for them? Let's talk about that. What would you like them to feel and know coming out of this, this conversation? Richard 30:23We know this, that performance is more than a metal. It's deeply personal and its fulfillment. So the ones that achieve this sustained high performance, there's a sense of fulfillment and metal or no metal, all of what we've talked about, flow, conviction, metal matters but that isn't the main thing. There's a performance fulfillment that a lot of people never get to in sport and business, and it's closer than we think. So, yeah. So, hopefully, there's some trigger in here that it might be hey, you know what, maybe I've overcomplicated things. Maybe there's a couple of smaller arrows I need to be focused on than these big arrows, maybe I'm all results-focused, and the ones who are journey-focused, they get there faster than the rest.  Tim 31:11That is an experience or that is a feeling. Fulfillment is something that everybody deserves. And a lot of people don't think it's within reach, but it is. They just need to break it down a little bit. All right, Richard Young, man. Love spending time with you.  Richard 31:29Same with you, too. Tim 31:30Alright, let's do it real soon. Richard 31:32See you for the next month. Tim 31:33Excellent, all the best.  Tim 31:39Thank you so much for listening to Sweet on Leadership. In this episode I chat about the Polynesian concept of whakapapa (pronounced Far-ka-pa-pa).Whakapapa is about an endless line of people with interlinked arms that stretches back to the beginning of time in one direction, and in the other continues on until the end of time. We hold our place in that line, and when the sun shines upon us, which is our lifetime, it is our turn to be the custodians of what has been passed on to us, and how we must take ownership of that and do right by others, particularly our tribe.Mentions:Habits of Leadership podcast Belonging (book) - Owen Eastwood

The Adelaide Show Podcast began life as Another Boring Thursday Night In Adelaide 10 Years Ago Tonight, to mark our 10th birthday, we chat with special guest, Owen Eastwood, who helps us reflect on the deeper theme of Belonging, which is something at the core of what this podcast is all about. This has been a community-focussed endeavour and Owen manages to highlight its structure and set out some principles for starting or strengthening your own community. The SA Drink Of The Week is a special bottle from 2016. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, Suedan takes us along Route 31. You can navigate episodes using chapter markers in your podcast app. Not a fan of one segment? You can click next to jump to the next chapter in the show. We're here to serve! We'd greatly appreciate it. And please talk about us and share our episodes on social media, it really helps build our community. Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concise page Running Sheet: Reflecting On 10 Years Of Adelaide Show Podcast Community With Owen Eastwood 00:00:00 Intro Here's the plan for our 10th birthday Month Of Episodes. Tonight, it's Owen Eastwood. Next Tuesday night, we will release our first Retrospective episode with the boys who created our original manifestation of Another Boring Thursday Night In Adelaide. The following Tuesday night, the second Restrospective episode will feature Nigel Dobson. And the final Retrospective will feature Adelaide hairdresser and trivia extraordinaire, Don Violi. At the time of recording, the current wording on the homepage of our website distills the meaningful, human insights that Owen Eastwood shares in his work. It reads: Welcome to The Adelaide Show podcast community. You are not alone. There are hundreds of fellow South Australians awaiting you in our episodes. Have a listen. Many of them will inspire you to continue (or discover) an endeavour that fulfills you. We have a great community here in South Australia. While it's not perfect, it has sustained many people to build connections and follow passions in ways have enabled our state to punch above its weight on the world stage. But as Dr Jane Goodall said back in episode 42, the best way to make our world a better place is to start with the square metre you're standing on, and build from there. To help you find “your people”, we've sorted our episodes into categories. If you browse the list below you'll be able to start with themes and topics closer to your heart. That said, in the process of putting the passion of South Australia on centre stage, we uncover some surprising people an insights, so we also encourage you to chance your arm and listen to some random episodes. It might just be what you needed to hear. If this is your first listen. Welcome. I hope you enjoy this and feel encouraged to explore other episodes, as well as let friends know about The Adelaide Show. If you're a regular, thank you very very much. Knowing you are there and occasionally hearing from you is a very important part of a community endeavour like this. It's been hard work, but it's been an absolute joy, and it has introduced me to many many people and places throughout South Australia. There's more where they came from. How much longer will this continue? I do not know. But for now, I intend to keep making every conversation count and I will continue to be grateful for every minute you let me put the passion of South Australia on centre stage. 00:08:37 SA Drink Of The Week We have a special wine this episode, the 2016 Zema Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. It's special because one of my fondest memories was the road trip Nigel Dobson and I took down to Mount Gambier to record a special interview with Maria and Walter from Caffe Belgiorno. On that night, we drank the same wine, but it was a 2012. You can relive that night, here: Episode 139, Mount Gambier Is Noyce Ployce: Stories From Caffe Belgiorno. 00:14:21 Belonging with Owen Esastwood Owen Eastwood is an author and performance coach, among other things, who happens to be a New Zealander of Māori descent. He works with some of the world's leading athletes, sporting teams, business leaders, entrepreneurs and performing artists. Over summer, I read his book, Belonging, The Ancient Code of Togetherness, and it has profoundly impacted my life, not least for Owen's engaging description of Whakapapa, a Māori idea which embodies our universal human need to belong. They say hindsight is 20:20 vision and as I look back on 10 years of creating my passion project, The Adelaide Show, I can't help be think I've missed the bullseye of making something truly grounded in community. To that end, I'm honoured to have Owen on the line from the UK to distill his concepts of Community and Belonging, and hopefully tease out some approaches to grounding this, or any future projects, more squarely within one's community. Owen, I truly recommend our listeners to read your book, Belonging, but for the purposes of this interview, I fear I need to ask you to help define a few terms and lay some foundations. The first is a definition of Whakapapa. The second is that moment when you became aware of the power of being told, you belong. In your book, your sports stories are superb but working with the commanders of NATO was a really grounding way of applying your approach to community. Can you explain what you did with them and what impact it had? How do you define the human urge to belong? I think you gave it great context in the sandpaper affair when Australia played South Africa in test cricket? How aware or ignorant are we of our need to belong, especially in light of Prof Anna Lembke's book, Dopamine Nation, in which she says we have pleasure on tap. Is that numbing our awareness? How did you interpret the more recent controversy of Australia's wicketkeeper, Carey, stumping or running out England's Bairstow? I am watching the women's FIFA world cup. I get a strong sense that the Matilda's seem to have some bond that seems more than just wanting to win for a team. What signs do you look for through the filter of Whakapapa or community? Now, the big question for The Adelaide Show. I feel like I have glanced the surface of community. What questions, what thinking, what conversations can help ground a community endeavour? 00:58:09 Musical Pilgrimage Our featured song this episode is La La by Suedan. Suedan is a dynamic blues and roots duo formed in 2016 by Sue and Dan, two talented musicians with a passion for creating soul-stirring music. Dan's mesmerizing vocals and intricate cigarbox guitar skills come together harmoniously ,while the rhythmic beats of the cajon add depth to their sound. With their heartfelt storytelling and electrifying performances ,SUEDAN has captivated audiences and established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the blues music scene. Their unique blend of traditional blues with a modern twist sets them apart and leaves a lasting impression on anyone who has the pleasure of experiencing their music. Route 31 Coastal Drive takes in the 31kms of our beautiful coastline (yes, you guessed it, that's the connection to the name), from O'Sullivan Beach to Sellicks Beach and everywhere in between. From holiday favourites to hidden gems, this stunning stretch of coastline is a must visit for your next road trip.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Do you have books in your home or workplace? And, perhaps more importantly, do you read any of them? Our guest today, Rainer Jozeps, says the presence of books is a symbol of your curiosity and your interest in engaging with the world (my words). However, that utterance was a small park of a bigger issue he drew attention to in In Review, namely, our state government's dropping of the ball (so to speak), when it comes to arts funding vs sports funding. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, thoughtful singer/songwriter, Lucas Day. You can navigate episodes using chapter markers in your podcast app. Not a fan of one segment? Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concise page Running Sheet: Rainer Jozeps In The House With No Books 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week No SA Drink Of The Week this episode. 00:02:32 Rainer Jozeps Books on bookshelves, news avoidance, ignorance, cocooning, and art making. These five topics were woven into an intriguing piece in InReview by Rainer Jozeps, entitled, South Australia Has Become Like A House With No Books. Rainer has been involved in Australia's arts industry for more 30 years, holding senior executive roles with the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust, Adelaide Festival Centre, West Australian Ballet, Australian Dance Theatre and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Rainer, I'd like to use your article to give structure to this conversation, even though I'm anticipating that we will do an awful lot of colouring outside the lines. Your article begins by recounting your many visits to display homes to sate your curiosity about what was being offered by builders, noting that you'd leave with an empty feeling in the pit of your stomach because the homes had no provision for books. You then quote Greek philosopher, Cicero, who said “a house with no books is like a body with no soul”. I'd like to explore this a little because my initial reaction was to cheer your claim that “books inspire creativity, excite the imagination and stimulate the intellect”, but then I realised that I have a wall or two of books at home and many have not been touched for years. Do you think there's intrinsic value in “the having of books” or are you assuming that those with books actually read them? Does the presence of books create a more thoughtful headspace? David Olney noted that seeing books can spark conversation. Our books are on our phones – perhaps our screens could run slideshows? Russ Roberts from the Econtalk Podcast says if we read a book a week, we'll probably read about 2,500 books in our lifetime. That's not many. Are there any you believe are a must – either by title or genre? The next theme in your article is ignorance, defined as the lack of knowledge. You argue ignorance can be a chosen state (you realise other people know things you don't know), or it can simply be that you are unaware of there being things you don't know. You note that ethicists call the former “recognised ignorance” and the latter “primary ignorance”. This drew recollections of the Johari Window but also the toxic saturation of conspiracy theories that thrive in this Donal Trump-led era of Fake News. Setting aside mainstream news consumption for the moment, are you hopeful or pessimistic about our society's chances of shaking free from this almost ubiquitous, heavy veil of ignorance? I sense there are First Principles at plan here. No matter how deep the proliferation social media, if we all chose to take heed of Socrates' dictim, that “the unexamined life is not worth living,” we might create space between hearing things and reacting to them. Do we need meditation before education? I did talkback radio for a number of years and I was always dumbfounded by vocal callers who robustly stated their position on anything you put in front of them, within a millisecond. My intuition would suggest their arguments were flawed, but I always needed more time and openness from them to investigate what their beliefs were based on. Needless to say, they were never open to that. Have you mixed with such people. Have you developed any strategies, not to trick them, but to engage them in reflection? And how important is it to actually challenge bad, stereotypical ideas? I ask this because psychologist and writer Adam Mastroianni has eloquently argued on Econtalk that, “our minds are like the keep of a castle protecting our deepest held values and beliefs from even the most skilled attacks. The only problem with this design for self-preservation is that it also can keep out wisdom that might be both useful and true.” He says there is little to do to change people's minds; you can't access our brains through our ears. Your thoughts? The third theme is the link between ignorance and “news avoidance”. What is news avoidance and what do we know about it? I am a former journalist and I get news from a glance through the ABC app, a longer dwell time on the Al Jazeera app, occasional reads of the Ukraine independent app which I subscrib to, Zaborona, and the In Daily newsletter when I see it. That keeps me abreast of most timely stories but for “colour, as I confessed to Peter Greste, I now get my news “sense” from news satire shows like The Bugle, Mad As Hell (when it was on, even though writer David M Green says they didn't think they were fulfilling such an important role), and comedic articles by The Chaser. By being prepared to describe the context of a story and then shout convincingly that the emperor has no clothes, they keep tabs on those in power. How would you define me on the news consumer to news avoider continuum? And where do you sit? The fourth estate has abdicated its responsibility. Peter Greste shared first hand how newsroom editors measure “success” by likes, instead of the important measure of editorial value. Your thoughts? The fourth theme is cocooning and I confess, I might be in that category. I quote: “Cocooning” is a middle-class phenomenon coined by US futurist Faith Popcorn, who predicted large swathes of the community would, in fear of an ever-changing outside world, equip their residences with entertainment rooms, streaming services, security systems and perimeter walls, and utilise ever more home delivery services. And now we want to work from home! What's wrong with this picture? I have worked from home for almost 20 years and I do everything I can to avoid driving in peak hour, if at all. I was in LA a week or two before Covid and the multi-lane highways were a non-stop channel of filth and waste and exhaust. Come Covid, they became almost deserted and peaceful, and air quality improved. Are there not good things about working from home? Going out necessitates a place to congregate with others and bars, cafes, and restaurants typically fill that need. But in an article in 2020, you lamented the noisy architecture of our eateries, where you have to shout to be heard. A client and friend of mine, Laura Drexler, has started a site called, Ambient Menu, where people can review eateries on their level of noise. Is this the other half of the deadly duo strangling social cohesion; crappy, selfish, dumbed down media and news, coupled with venues that encourage consumption and monosylabic conversations? The final theme in your article is art making. You lament our State's reduction in art funding, especially compared to its increased funding of sporting events. I quote: “The arts in South Australia are woefully underfunded relative to other states. From 2017-2022, states and territories cumulatively increased arts funding by 22 per cent, while SA was the only state to head in the opposite direction, reducing funding by 9 per cent over the same period.” I think we can accept the funding figures as fact, so let's look at your underlying reason for frustration here, you state: Our civic life needs thriving cultural institutions to counter ignorance and intolerance. How is that so? I have seen some wonderful, thought-provoking theatre that had potential to counter ignorance and intolerance, but it it seen by a select few who can afford $50+ a ticket and who are primarily people from the chattering, enlightened classes who are already doing their best to stay informed and engaged. What is the value of our State Theatre putting on worthy pieces, society-improving pieces, if only the tiniest morsel of the community can see them? At the end of every episode since 2013, we have said goodnight to Don Dunstan, to honour his legacy as a Premier who stirred things up and got our kitchen cooking (literally). In a stirring piece you wrote in 2o16, Inauthentic “vibrancy” is damaging SA's shrinking arts sector, you lamented then Premier Jay Weatherill's dropping of the ball (so to speak) in reducing arts funding. There are many buzzwords in art but especially in politics and “vibrancy” is one, along with “activation”. What have you noticed about governnment support for the arts from Weatherill to Marshall to Malinauskas? Some of the events receiving money at the moment, most likely at the expense of arts, include Liv Golf, the AFL's Gather Round, and bidding for next year's Netball grand final. Do you think these events are intrinsically unworthy of funding? Our guest, next week, for our 10th birthday episode is New Zealander, Owen Eastwood, who has written a beautiful book about Belonging, drawing on many principles and insights of his Maori culture. He has noted that the communal act of following a team and “being there” every week is actually good for the spirit and the soul. Have you ever partaken in such a thing as “following a team”? And is there something from this dynamic that we can learn from in The Arts? I am part of a netball family. My wife coaches three teams and both my daughters play in two teams apiece. It has a strong web of grassroots involvement and is a crucial part of holding many regional communities together. Could there ever be an Arts alternative? Your words to our government and us? 00:53:22 Musical Pilgrimage Our featured song this episode is Intuition by Lucas Day. More than 60 bespoke wellness experiences and events are headlining the 2023 Wellness wander three-day weekend in the Adelaide Hills this coming weekend, March 31-April 2, 2023, so Steve arranged an interview with the event founder, Katherine Droga to not only discuss the event but also the whole topic of wellness tourism. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, we hear an unplugged song by long time favourite of the podcast, Kelly Brouhaha. Oh, and here's our index of all episode in one concise page Running Sheet: Can Wellness Tourism Heal The World? 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week No SA drink segment this week. 00:03:42 Katherine Droga This coming weekend, March 31 to April 2, 2023, the Wellness Wander Weekend returns to the Adelaide Hills. More than 60 bespoke wellness experiences will be staged from Stirling, to Hahndorf, Mount Barker to Lobethal, Crafers to Paracombe and the greater surrounds. At the heart of this event is Katherine Droga, Founder of Wellness Wander, Executive Producer of Well Traveller TV, and Chair of the GWI Wellness Tourism Initiative. Katherine, I have found that as I planned some questions for our chat, there are some challenging ones in the list because I do have this social justice bent in me in which I hate seeing vulnerable people exploited and the area of health is one of the danger zones. But I know you're up for it and I appreciate that. But first, Katherine, how do you define wellness? The wellness idustry attracts many types of people, from those who are unwell to those who feel called to help others. And the first thoughts that arose for me when hearing about the Wellness wander, were coloured by concern about potential opportunism. My initial analogy was that the wellness tourism operators were setting up stands around the edge of a broken and dangerous playground to make money from selling bandaids to injured people. But then I realised that even bandaids have a role to play in healing and maybe an event like Wellness wander might give people the breathing space they need to take stock. What are your thoughts? There is gold in the wellness hills. The Global Wellness Institute says wellness travellers spend 53% more than typical international travellers and 178% more than typical domestic travellers. How do we ethically balance the care factor  of wellness with the brute force of economic drivers? What role has Covid played in spurring interest in wellness travel? One major lens of an event like Wellness wander is at the personal level but no matter how much healing you might undergo, it doesn't change the fact that playground of the world is still a broken place. To fix the causes of suffering in the world is a much deeper task. In fact, I would love your reflection on this insight from Owen Eastwood's book, Belonging. He seems to suggest that our disconnectedness from ourselves and our society (which causes unwellness) actually relates to our lack of understanding of Whakapapa. This is a maori concept of noting that we are here as part of a long line of those who came before us and that the sun will shine on each of us brightly and our job is to try to leave a better legacy. Does that resonate with you? What has occurred on your journey that propelled you into this world of wellness? I was heartened to see The GWI has a strong focus on evidence, which is great because our podcast has a long history of supporting evidence-based enterprises and products. For example, we have long been appalled by the water that is sold as expensive homeopathic medicine. I can state right now that we stand against that sort of skullduggery. However, we're also aware that there are some alternative practices where although they claim a certain type of action is happening, what is really going on is a placebo effect based on the biopsychosocial factors arising from just having attention from a therapist (the patient– practitioner interaction). How do you apply safeguards in an event like Wellness wander to save people from themselves? We will put a link to the full program in the show notes, but I'd love to look into a few things that caught my eye from the program: Sensory Journey at the Ukaria Cultural Centre Family digital detox Yoga The Wellness wander is an overarching event for the weekend with individual events 100% run by providers including setting their own price points for the event. However, there are plenty of cheaper options for those who are on a budget such as: Guided Meditation and Labyrinth Walk - $35 https://wellnesswander.com.au/activities/guided-meditation-and-labyrinth-walk-2/ Introduction to Breathwork and Wander -$25 https://wellnesswander.com.au/activities/introduction-to-breathwork-wander/ Candlelight Yin with Live Music - $40 https://wellnesswander.com.au/activities/candlelight-yin-with-live-music/ Wellness wander through Hahndorf history - $10 https://wellnesswander.com.au/activities/wellness-wander-through-hahndorf-history/ What can other tourism operators learn from the Wellness wander and from this thing called wellness tourism? 00:39:01 Musical Pilgrimage The most fitting song in the Musical Pilgrimage this episode. It is Campfires by Kelly Brouhaha. There are three reasons this is the perfect song ahead of the Wellness wander. The Wellness wander is about reconnecting with your self and your place and that should also include connecting or reconnecting with our magnificent, homegrown talent. Kelly is an Adelaide-based singer songwriter and following her and supporting her is a great way to ground yourself in life-enriching local art. This song is about the goodness of gathering around campfires to tell stories and to just be (among other things). As referenced in the interview with Katherine Droga, Owen Eastwood argues for the importance of campfire storytelling in his book, Belonging, which is all on theme for this episode. And, finally, this is Kelly off her recent Unplugged album. If anything says simplicity and honesty in harmony with the Wellness wander, it's an artist communicating with us intimately "unplugged". We taste the Strawberry & Watermelon Crush. 00:05:48 Steven Jeffrey and Hayli In episode 358 in August last year, we featured a song by Atlas Genius because the band had just taken the USA by storm with appearances on just about every US prime time talk show you could imagine. The single, Trojans, was the tune that got into the heads of Americans, selling more than 1 million copies, achieving Gold status, and reaching number 3 on the US Alternative Music Chart. Just another little export from Victor Harbor!! One of the founding members is Steven Jeffery, and he joins us with a superstar-to-be, Hayli. There's much to discuss today, from behind-the-scenes insights into the music industry, the grind of rehearsals, the creative process of writing or choosing songs, the unrelenting need to promote yourself, and the challenge of maintaining the joy that music is all about. But I want to start by joining some dots in the Atlas Genius story because for a youngish band, it's amazing how many different versions there are online about your formation. Steven, can you start by sharing "that moment" when you and your two brothers, Keith and Michael, decided to form a band back in 2009? An American ABC article says you've left, and the Wikipedia article about your band has a list of almost a dozen people who are (or have been involved). Has it been a case of musical chairs, and if so, why? Many US fans first learned about you when your song, Trojans, was featured in Greys Anatomy. Let's have a listen to that song and then come back and discuss how it came to be featured on the TV show and what the aftermath was like? TROJANS Trojans is a reference from Greek Mythology and, of course, Keith told reporter Taylor Dunn that the band name was also "a certain play on the Greek mythology". Was philosophy an area of interest for you boys? Every family has its own mythology, to a degree, which is something I hope to focus on this year as we reach 10 years of The Adelaide Show podcast. Performance coach and author, Owen Eastwood, goes deep into this in his book, Belonging, as he talks about the Maori concept of Whakapapa; the notion that oour ancestors came before us and the sun shines on each of us in our turn. In your case, your father was in a band, I believe. Is there much music and performance heritage in the Jeffrey family? Hayli, we're about to turn our attention to you but first I want to play another Atlas Genius song that Steve says is his favourite and your favourite. Why do you like The City We Grow? TO THE CITY WE GROW Hayli, when I first listened to the three tracks you currently have on Spotify, I wrote this to Steven: If we were going to draw a Venn diagram with Hayli, Kate Bush and Melissa Etheridge, I think there'd be some sizeable areas of overlap surrounding Hayli's own features. Hayli, here you are, at the beginning of your career. What goes through your mind when listeners try to peg you to other singers like I did? What was the moment when you decided to throw everything into a music career? I hear that you've written your songs based on your life and the people around you - which must make it a bit scary if someone's about to hear themselves or their actions described in a song. What's been the process for writing songs? The Triple J Unearthed feature on you, specifically notes that you keep your songs ambiguous enough so that people don't really know who they're about - which might be important when the topic's more about hate or impartial romances - but how does that sit next to Leonard Cohen's belief that it's in the particular where we find the universal? In other words, do you lose any power by making references to people more general? Set us up for Mustang Crescent because that's the favourite Hayli song with my daughters. MUSTANG CRESCENT I've noticed your songs, and most Atlas Genius songs, run between 3:30 and 4:00 but I've noticed that DJs these days are either cultivating or responding to a mass sense of Attention Deficit Disorder by only playing 30 seconds of a song, or maybe a minute, or having songs overlaid on each other (remixed). For me, I'd be deflated that all the thought and effort had gone into verses, choruses, instrumental breaks, and lyrics, just gets wasted. I'd probably start just producing 45-second songs, or just 45-second of novel stuff and the rest on "repeat". How does this impact your planning around a song? Hayli, your voice is so strong and raw and sensual, that I get a little impatient with the music on your tracks - I just want to hear your voice. How do you balance that? There is one exception to my "vocal forward" attitude, and that's on the track, Mistaken, because if features some excellent Hammond Organ. [If you want to hear a great discussion about the Hammond, catch my chat with Evan Whetter from Lazy Eye in episode 303.] What made you both opt for the Hammond - was this Steven's keys background? MISTAKEN I've just read an excellent book called Chokepoint Capitalism, in which the stranglehold that Spotify and record labels have on the music scene is described in great detail. What does Hayli need to do to earn a good living from being a singing superstar, and has having a record label deal brought riches to Atlas Genius? At the time of recording, you have a big rehearsal scheduled tomorrow, Hayli. Take us through the planning and discipline that goes into setting yourself up to launch your career properly. Cryptic is your latest release. Can you decipher it for us? CRYPTIC Steven, Hayli is a singer/songwriter and that comes through in her songs but for Atlas Genius, I sometimes get the sense that the lyrics in the songs are almost like other instruments; it's not so much what they are saying but how they are sounding? What's your take? We're going to finish with Molecules, a track that has that anthemic, dance floor sound, with keys at the fore. Tell us about being the keyboard player, even though Wikipedia has you listed as the bass guitarist. Do you get your share of the limelight? Can you introduce Molecules, which features my favourite lines: We steal the molecules from the deadWe liberate inanimate objects MOLECULES Atlas Genius website Hayli (Tripe J Unearthed) Hayli InstagramSupport the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Owen Eastwood helps teams and organizations thrive. He really focuses on the systems and the process and how you can build an elite culture. He is someone who mixes ancient philosophies and wisdoms and is spiritual in a lot of different ways. Ultimately, he tries to help coaches and leaders and sports organizations get clear on their vision and help them create processes to make their vision a reality. Over the past decade, Owen has worked with some of the most elite teams and groups in the world, including The England National Soccer Team, The British Olympic Team, NATO, and The South African Cricket Team. All along the way, he's coached their leaders on how to build world class culture and take performance to the highest level. Owen takes a systems approach, looking at the whole, and tries to help organizations figure out how they can function better.   Owen had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “You are one person in a line of people that goes back to our origin story. All of the people that came before you have their arms interlocked with each other” (8:40). “You've always been part of this community, and you always will be part of this community” (9:00). “There's an immortality that goes with belonging” (9:15). “The best leaders are ones who build out from having relationships with the people they're responsible for” (16:35). “I didn't find it particularly fulfilling just helping one individual become the best version of themselves” (24:20). “What has always motivated me is what a team or a community are trying to achieve” (24:30). “We have a need to belong” (29:30). “Our universal need to belong is under threat” (31:30). “If we have everybody dispersed and not together, we actually diminish our energy” (35:55). “Autonomy is really powerful, but it has to be in balance with connection to the team” (41:40). “If you don't have those visions and those pictures of exactly what it is you're trying to achieve, then you can easily get a bit lost and disconnected from each other” (46:30). “The sun shined on people before us and it will shine on people after us, but right now it's shining on us” (47:35). “In order for you to anchor yourself and to have a meaningful life, you need to understand what it is you belong to, what the story is so far… and what impact you want to have and ultimately the legacy that we will leave” (48:00). “The past, the present, and the future are only one thing. What are you doing when the sun is shining on you?” (48:25). “You should be a guardian for the things that you are part of” (48:40). “What you do when the sun is shining on you is your legacy” (49:40). “We can choose what kind of legacy we want to leave” (50:30). “Psychological safety is an absolutely essential element of a high performing environment” (54:45). “Belonging is not directly correlated to how many hours you spend around other people” (1:05:30). “My sense of belonging comes from the way I'm treated in that environment and my sense when I'm outside of it” (1:06:20). “I've always been a coach, even as a kid” (1:11:25). “It's a sacred responsibility to manage and lead other people” (1:13:20). “High performers have an overwhelming focus on what they can control” (1:15:45).   Additionally, you can follow Owen on LinkedIn. He also talks about 'Whakapapa' - a fundamental principle of New Zealand Maori culture, which links people to all their ancestors who went before them.Owen was born in New Zealand and is half English – half Maori. His father died when he was just a little boy – which unsurprisingly had a huge impact on Owen's life … and his work. It was a pleasure to pick Owen's brains and explore his philosophy, one that has genuine depth and value, and I hope you enjoy this conversation**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comAnd please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts***Finally, a huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. It has been a shocking time in cricket following the Azeem Rafiq whistleblowing case. What's clear is that this is not just about cricket – it's about sport and wider society in general. We all have a duty to make our team members feel safe and included. As Nelson Mandela said, “sport has the power to change the world, it is more powerful than governments. It speaks to people in a language they understand – sport creates hope where once there was despair.” I reflect in this episode how sport is so powerful, what we can learn from the Ubuntu philosophy, and the need for everyone to feel included .Tune in to this episode as I share some empowering advice from Business Psychologists Binna and Jo Kandola about the positive aspects of inclusivity and how to create a fair and inclusive environment. Human beings have a need to belong. If we feel we belong we are comfortable and secure and we are able to be the best versions of ourselves.  A child's home is the first place where they will sense they belong and their families will be their first introduction to a sense of belonging to a group of people. These early experiences will shape the way they see themselves and the world. Our children are also part of an “unbroken and unbreakable chain of people who share a sacred identity and culture”, as my guest writes in his book. And as parents we can help our children to find their space in this chain of people. Owen Eastwood is one of the most in-demand performance coaches in the world and has played significant roles with the current England football team, Great Britain's 2020 Olympics team, the Scotland rugby team, the South African cricket ream and the Royal Ballet School.  In this conversation he helps us to apply the insights from his work with high performance teams to our families and parenting and we discuss his incredible book Belonging.

Owen Eastwood is a performance consultant who's book ‘Belonging' I devoured recently. Topping the charts in his native New Zealand, it's crammed full of story-telling and take-home messages. I would read a few pages, then reflect on my own work and career and drift off into thought and feelings. It's such a good read. Owen has worked with some of the very best teams and organisations both in the UK and abroad. Of Maori descent, that's also a driver that's fuelled his thinking around purpose, leadership, role models, success and much more. For the last five years he's been a consultant to Gareth Southgate's England team as well as recently consulting with the new Premiership Rugby Champions, Harlequins and thee are stories about those teams as well as many more examples along the way. I drove across to his offices in the Cotswolds really excited for the conversation I was going to have. The book gave me plenty of starting points, but also through conversations we've had previously, I knew this would be a really rich and thought provoking chat. As the title of his book, we started our chat around belonging, something that he wraps a lot of his work around. Jenny feels that there are some profound techniques we can learn from sport that can easily translate into the workplace - how goals are set, fostering a sense of belonging, dealing with tensions and stress and setting team standards. Safety and feeling safe as humans, individually and as part of a team, comes up a number of times during our conversation. As do the stories we tell ourselves (and we all do it). Jenny asks how we might unpack our realities and check our stories with facts. She also talks about how much we embody, including our values. Jenny has some great insights into how you might assess whether you are better suited to an Exec or Non-Exec role and she talks about how powerful relationships are reciprocal relationships.    Jenny Ashmore is a persuasive and inspirational senior Board adviser, and consultant with 15+ years of Board-level experience across Financial Services, Private Equity, international sports, charities, and member organisations. She is also a former GB age-group triathlete (qualifying for World & European Championships) and as a coach is passionately interested in the components of what drives peak performance and winning podium positions in business as much as sport. This comes after an Executive career working for some of the world's largest businesses and brands with the best-known household names - Pampers, SSE, Mars, P&G.
