Nicole O'Byrne talks to Peter Ludlow about his book, Disciples of Antigonish: Catholics in Nova Scotia, 1880–1960. For generations eastern Nova Scotia was one of the most celebrated Roman Catholic constituencies in Canada. Occupying a corner of a small province in a politically marginalized region of the country, the Diocese of Antigonish nevertheless had tremendous influence over the development of Canadian Catholicism. It produced the first Roman Catholic prime minister of Canada, supplied the nation with clergy and women- religious, and organized one of North America's most successful social movements. Disciples of Antigonish recounts the history of this unique multi-ethnic community as it shifted from the firm ultramontanism of the nineteenth century to a more socially conscious Catholicism after the First World War. Peter Ludlow chronicles the faithful as they built a strong Catholic sub-state, dealing with economic uncertainty, generational outmigration, and labour unrest. As the home of the Antigonish Movement - a network of adult study clubs, cooperatives, and credit unions - the diocese became famous throughout the Catholic world. The influence of “mighty big and strong Antigonish,” as one national figure described the community, reached its zenith in the 1950s. Disciples of Antigonish traces the monumental changes that occurred within the region and the wider church over nearly a century and demonstrates that the Catholic faith in Canada went well beyond Sunday Mass. Peter Ludlow is an adjunct professor of Catholic Studies at St Francis Xavier University, and the President-General of the Canadian Catholic Historical Association. Richard Cashin, lawyer, politician, union leader (b at St John's 5 Jan 1937). He was a grandson of Sir Michael Cashin, sometimes known as "King of the Robbers" for his south shore salvage operations, who was frequent Cabinet minister and prime minister of Newfoundland, and he was the nephew of Peter J. CASHIN. Cashin was himself elected Liberal MP for St John's West in 1962, 1963 and 1965.After his defeat in 1968 he practised law and won a significant settlement for Placentia Bay fishermen who were suing the Electric Reduction Co for phosphorus-based destruction of their fish. In 1970 he joined with Father Desmond McGrath, a former St Francis Xavier University classmate, to help organize the Fishermen's Union. After major victories over the fishing companies at Burgeo in 1972 and in the trawlermen's strike of 1975, the union fully established itself. Now the biggest union in Newfoundland by far, the Newfoundland Fishermen, Food and Allied Workers' Union is a major political force.Cashin supported NDP candidates in the mid-1970s but joined the National Unity Task Force and the board of Petro-Canada in 1977. In the 1980s, however, he has led the NFFAWU into full support of the NDP and is himself a party vice-president. The union has also been very active in the Coalition for Equality, a broad coalition of labour and other progressive groups. In spring 1987 he led the union out of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union into the new Canadian Auto Workers. Cashin was founder of the Fishermen, Food and Allied Workers' Union and its president from 1971 to 1993. He was chairman of the Task Force on Incomes and Adjustment in the Atlantic Fishery (1992-93). He was chairman of the Task Force on Incomes and Adjustment in the Atlantic Fishery (1992-93) and a member of the National Forum on Health (1994-97). He also became chair of the Fishing Industry Renewal Board and a member of the Canadian Transportation Agency. I don't know if you frequent the same social channels that I'm using for the podcast: IG, TW and my personal LinkedIn feed. I've put posts for the last 3 years on those platforms and the one thing I can tell you is that without paid promotion, it takes real work to reach a decent audience.  I wanted to know how others play this game so I asked someone who started promoting things on Facebook 15 years ago. He's not on all the social channels and doesn't pretend to keep his Twitter account active, but for the company that's his day-job and the clients he serves through his agency, he knows how to use content that gets noticed.  Today's guest, Kyle Turk, has headed the marketing teams at both public and private sector organizations. In this week's 7-minute podcast, Ken Steele summarizes a variety of low-tech and high-tech ways in which universities attempt to bring a virtual campus to the largest PSE trade show in North America, the Ontario Universities' Fair. At #OUF2015, many universities use large campus photography or ever-larger video displays, capped off with Trent University's "jumbotron" screen. For several years now, Laurentian University has recreated their campus in miniature in their "5D presentation room." This year, Wilfrid Laurier University added a large touchscreen "virtual map" of campus to their exhibit, and UOIT partnered with Oculus Rift to deliver a virtual reality campus tour for the first time. Although virtual maps and VR helmets do give a good sense of the physical buildings on campus, they still need to bring to life the faculty and students who inhabit the campus. St Francis Xavier University had a good idea when they brought a live video wall to the OUF a few years ago, allowing prospective students and parents to interact with faculty and students in real time on the StFX campus.
