He grew up in Milan and became an army officer, where he distinguished himself so well that the Emperor Diocletian made him captain of the Praetorian Guard not suspecting that Sebastian was a Christian. In Rome, while fulfilling the duties of a courtier, he used his position to comfort and encourage his imprisoned fellow-Christians. By his labors and example he brought many to faith in Christ, including Chromatius, the Prefect in charge of persecuting the Roman Christians.   Sebastian had upheld two brothers, Mark and Marcellinus, who were awaiting execution for their faith. When the day of execution came, their father Tranquillinus, who had been a pagan but through Sebastian's example had converted, presented himself to Chromatius and announced that he too was a Christian. His testimony was so powerful that the hard heart of the Prefect was melted, and he himself resolved to become a Christian.   Caius, Bishop of Rome, gathered the new brethren (both men and women — not all of Sebastian's converts have been mentioned here) to embrace them and baptize them, but also to warn them of their coming Martyrdom. He instructed some to flee the city and others, headed by Sebastian, to remain in Rome, devoting their days to fasting, prayer and thanksgiving as they awaited their death. As the "company of Martyrs" did this, many came to them and were healed of ailments, and many joined them in confessing Christ.   When the time of martyrdom came, each member of the company was subjected to imaginatively cruel tortures before his execution. Sebastian himself was made to witness the deaths of all his companions, then to endure his own trial. He serenely confessed his unshaken faith before Diocletian himself before being taken to the place of execution. There he was tied to a post and made the target of a band of archers until his body bristled with arrows like the quills of a porcupine. He was left for dead, but when Irene, widow of St Castulus, came to bury him, she found him alive and tended his wounds. Amazingly, he recovered, and presented himself once again to the Emperor. Astonished and outraged, the tyrant ordered that Sebastian be beaten to death with clubs and thrown into the city's sewer. That evening, a pious Christian woman was told in a vision to retrieve his body and bury it in the catacombs. After St Constantine brought peace to the Church, Pope Damasus built a church over the site in the Saint's honor. For hundreds of years, many miracles were worked there through St Sebastian's intercessions.

Walking with the Saints l Feast of St. Sebastian, Patron Saint of Soldiers l January 20 Our saint for today is the patron saint of soldiers, athletes and those who desire to die a saintly death. He was Sebastian, a Christian youth from southern France, born about 256 A.D. He was reared as a Christian and was sent by his parents to study in Milan. When he came of age, he joined the Roman Army, and discovered how fiercely the Christians were being persecuted by the Emperors of the Roman Empire. He, therefore, decided to secretly help the persecuted Christians. As a soldier, he distinguished himself for his excellent service and was at once promoted to the rank of Praetorian Guards who were tasked to guard and protect the Emperor. While serving in this capacity, he tried to convert the pagans around him and helped the imprisoned Christians. Instead of beating them, he preached secretly to them about Jesus Christ. Once, two Christian brothers, who were deacons, were arrested and imprisoned for not offering sacrifices to the Emperor. Their parents came to convince them to give up Christianity but Sebastian stopped them from this foolish idea. He instructed them and they too, were converted to Christianity. Those who heard Sebastian's preaching, including the Prefect of Rome and his son, were also converted. Many people came to Sebastian in secret to hear him preach. But this activity led to the discovery that Sebastian was a Christian. The Emperor called for him, gave him a nice scolding, reproached him for being ungrateful to him, and since Sebastian could not follow his command to deny his faith, he ordered that Sebastian be tied and brought to the training field of the soldiers to be used as the target for shooting practice. Tied to a tree, Sebastian was punctured with many arrows and thinking that he was dead, he was thrown into the open field.  Fortunately, he was discovered by Irene, wife of Diocletian's servant, who was earlier martyred. Irene took care of him, and soon his wounds were healed and his health was restored. Sebastian went to Emperor Diocletian to surprise him that he was alive. He met him at the stairwell and reminded him about his sin in persecuting the Christians. The Emperor got frightened but gaining his composure, he told other guards to tie Sebastian, beat him with clubs until death and throw him into the sewers of Rome. The order was immediately executed and Sebastian's body was pierced with many arrows that he looked like an urchin, a sea creature with hard and long spines. His dead body was found by a certain Lucina, who gave it a proper burial at the entrance of the catacombs of Rome. Some 80 years later, his body was transferred to a basilica in Rome and his relics were claimed by many believers. St. Sebastian was proclaimed patron of soldiers. He is also patron of athletes due to the fact that his first punishment from the emperor was to make him a target for soldiers learning to shoot an arrow. It was like a game which amused the pagan soldiers. He is usually depicted tied to a tree and pierced by arrows. Because of his holy life, he is also invoked as protector against bubonic and other plagues. His feast day is January 20. Virtue: piety, humility, courage, fortitude, charity and patience Prayer: “St. Sebastian, you showed your great fortitude in witnessing to your Christian faith, pray for us that we may have the courage and joy to live as true Christians.”

St. Sebastian of San Francisco & Jackson (Nov. 30), Apostle to all America and first American-born priest, reposed in 1940 after his remarkable labor for Christ and His lost sheep. This essay comes from his book “Preaching in the Russian Church” and shines light, in a clear and simple way, on the truth of the uniqueness of the Orthodox Church. This saint is worthy of far greater recognition than he currently receives for all that Christ did through him. 0:09 Introduction by Fr. Seraphim Rose from The Orthodox Word 3:02 St. Sebastian: What is the Orthodox Church? 3:55 The true and divine doctrine of holy faith 5:08 Heresy, or injury to the teaching of Christ 7:39 God the Father 8:00 God the Son 8:23 God the Holy Spirit 9:05 To be saved one must belong to the Orthodox Church 13:03 conditions of the true of lawful hierarchy 13:13 1) grace-filled Apostolic Succession 15:06 2) confesses the truth and is foreign to heresy 15:22 3) The Sacraments must retain the form and actions, otherwise the Sacrament may not be valid. 16:49 4) the true and lawful hierarchy must obey the rules and canons universally accepted by the Orthdoox Church. 17:27 5) also needed is unity in a spirit of peace and love. 17:59 The Orthodox Church is the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church ”What is the Orthodox Church? The Orthodox Church is a body or community of people who, 1: correctly believe in Divine Revelation; and, 2: who obey a lawful hierarchy instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, through the Holy Apostles.” “In the course of time the Apostolic Tradition, which was transmitted orally at first, was gradually, as the necessities of the Church demanded, committed to writing; and it is found in the works of the Holy Fathers and teachers of the first several centuries.” “The Apostles transmitted the power of conferring the Holy Spirit only to bishops.” -context is the example of how the Deacon Philip could not bring down the Holy Spirit on the Samaritans ”Therefore, it is the duty of Christians to obey the Church, for outside of her there is no salvation.” This text can be found in Issue #5 of The Orthodox Word: https://archive.org/details/100101V17N05061981SepOctNovDec/001%20V01N01%201965%20Jan%20Feb/ ALSO, listen to the Life of St. Sebastian (five parts) here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzFKi22k2KYiAmhiJ6mQaberXVJ0FZePY Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church. The first Orthodox priest born in America, St. Sebastian of San Francisco and Jackson is an Apostle to America for having served across its vast land in countless parishes amongst Orthodox and non-Orthodox people of all ethnic backgrounds. Born in San Francisco in 1863, he helped establish the first Serbian Orthodox parish in the Western Hemisphere in Jackson, CA in 1894. He served tirelessly in America and Serbia where he reposed in 1940 at the Zhicha Monastery. In 2007 his holy relics were transferred back to Jackson, CA and in 2015 he was formally canonized a Saint by the Orthodox Church, confirming what the faithful had known for some time--that St. Sebastian's last wish had been granted him: “the Kingdom of Heaven without end.“ This is part five of five of the Life of Saint Sebastian and has been generously offered by our brother Sergius. He then turned to the stories from Greco-Roman antiquity and the poetry of his friend Poliziano for inspiration, leading his way to painting his own version of Apelles' 'Aphrodite Anadyomene', The Birth Of Venus.
