Giacomo 1:22-25 Beati piuttosto quelli che odono la parola di Dio e la osservano!

“In vita tu hai ricevuto beni e Lazzaro mali; ora lui è consolato e tu sei in mezzo ai tormenti.” Una parabola molto nota, quella che ci propone la liturgia odierna. Per la sua chiarezza, una sua semplice lettura ci indica già un profondo insegnamento di Gesù. L’attenzione è oggi rivolta verso l’uso delle ricchezze, rimproverando un loro utilizzo non generoso. L’esortazione è rivolta a chi tende semplicemente a costruire un regno terreno fatto solo di beni materiali, con il rischio di perdere anche i veri valori umani. L’esortazione di Gesù è infatti a considerare i poveri che ci stanno vicino. Certamente Egli parla della povertà materiale. Una povertà che oggi è diffusa e che si sta diffondendo, anche perché • con gli strumenti di comunicazione di massa sempre più efficienti • i nostri “vicini” appartengono sempre di più a vaste aree della terra. Nella figura di Lazzaro, però, possiamo trovare tutti coloro che chiedono il nostro aiuto, materiale ma anche spirituale. La povertà che sempre di più spaventa nel cosiddetto “mondo ricco” è quella della solitudine, dell’abbandono, della malattia che nessuno vuol guarire. Gesù ci invita a non nasconderci dietro un perbenismo che in realtà erige steccati fondati su giudizi o pregiudizi. Quanti “Lazzaro” incontriamo, e a quanti prestiamo veramente soccorso? Può essere interessante guardare anche alla figura del ricco. Gesù ce la presenta come un gaudente, dedito solo allo svago quotidiano, in un’esistenza assolutamente frivola. A prima vista, ci sembra che questo ricco sia lontano dalla nostra mentalità. Chi può dire di avere tante ricchezze e chi può permettersi il lusso quotidiano come il ricco della parabola? Una analisi più attenta, soprattutto in riferimento alla mentalità dell’epoca, ci fa scorgere, in quest’atteggiamento del ricco, qualcosa che può riguardare anche noi. La ricchezza era considerata benedizione di Dio e quindi poteva essere giusto spenderla come si riteneva più opportuno, senza molti rimorsi di coscienza. Gesù non specifica come quest’uomo, il protagonista della parabola, sia diventato ricco. Non possiamo presumere che ci sia stato un arricchimento illecito; potrebbe essere dovuta a ricchezze familiari, al conseguimento di un’eredità o al frutto di un lavoro onesto. Vestire in modo ricercato e mangiare con gli amici, di per sé, non può essere definito come un’azione cattiva. Da come Gesù ci presenta la parabola, la povertà di Lazzaro non è imputabile al ricco e neanche le sue sofferenze sono una causa diretta del suo agire. Qual è, allora, la vera colpa che Gesù imputa a questo ricco? Semplicemente, che nell’ordinarietà della sua esistenza non si è accorto di qualcuno che chiedeva il suo aiuto. Può essere questo il nostro caso? Possiamo sentirci soddisfatti di ciò che abbiamo legittimamente raggiunto e, con diritto, ne godiamo con chi riteniamo giusto. Il diritto sociale giustificherebbe, quindi • in questa prospettiva • qualsiasi nostra disattenzione, anche se non volontaria. La vigilanza evangelica, in questa parabola, si incarna nella necessità di avere occhi e cuore pronti per chi chiede il nostro aiuto.

Gesù, subito dopo la scelta dei Dodici apostoli e dopo aver guarito e sanato molte persone nell’annuncio del Regno, si rivolge ai suoi discepoli. Il suo atteggiamento rivela una scelta ben precisa. Il messaggio delle beatitudini, chiamate la Magna Carta del cristianesimo, si inserisce con forza nella novità assoluta del discepolato. I veri beati sono i discepoli di Gesù, dei quali ci è fornita una precisa identità. La lettura completa del brano delle beatitudini impedisce un doppio rischio, che sembra porsi in forma alternativa. Alzando gli occhi ai discepoli, Gesù quasi compie una seconda creazione, operata nel solco della redenzione. Il discepolo è, nella nuova creazione, figlio di Dio, creato ad immagine e somiglianza dello stesso Gesù, vero uomo e vero Dio. La proclamazione delle beatitudini non è la nuova edizione di un manuale di morale pratica e spicciola: Gesù tratteggia il suo volto nella nuova identità dei discepoli. Essere discepolo è opera di Dio, deriva dalla missione del Figlio. Il dono del discepolato, che riceviamo dall’Incarnazione e ci rende partecipi del mistero pasquale, non può essere vissuto passivamente ma richiede la nostra collaborazione. Ciò è evidente perché, sempre rivolgendosi ai discepoli, Gesù completa le beatitudini con i “guai” corrispondenti. Egli non divide i “buoni”, i discepoli, dai “cattivi”, gli altri: tutti sono chiamati e invitati a percorrere la via che le beatitudini tracciano. Il discepolato è un dono da vivere nella nostra quotidianità, non uno stato statico ma un percorso che invita tutti alla conversione vera del cuore. La gratuità dell’agire di Dio non implica inattività, ma accoglienza docile della voce dello Spirito. Con le beatitudini siamo invitati a riscoprire il dono della grazia del battesimo, che ci rende figli di Dio, e a viverlo con coerenza e sincerità.

ORD. - ANNO C (Lc 12,32-48) di Giacomo Biffi La nostra breve meditazione domenicale è sempre un po' una verifica delle nostre convinzioni e del nostro comportamento alla luce del genuino pensiero del Signore Gesù.Chi infatti si dice cristiano deve sempre fare attenzione che la sua mentalità sia davvero conforme non alle opinioni correnti del nostro tempo né ai nostri pregiudizi incontrollati, ma all'insegnamento totale di Cristo.Il punto che ci viene oggi richiamato è la persuasione che il nostro destino non è racchiuso nei pochi giorni che ci sono dati da vivere sulla terra; che abbiamo tutti un traguardo; che perciò dobbiamo tenere vivo il senso dell'attesa. Siate simili a coloro che aspettano: per chi vuol vivere secondo il Vangelo, è essenziale mantenere desta la tensione interiore verso gli avvenimenti che concluderanno la vicenda umana.Il cristiano sa che la sua storia terminerà con un incontro personale col suo Signore; un incontro che sarà anche un rendiconto e un giudizio e al quale perciò ci si deve ogni giorno preparare: Siate pronti, con la cintura ai fianchi e le lucerne accese.Se il nostro spirito è ricurvo e attento solo ai fatti della vita terrestre; se evitiamo, perché troppo duro e fastidioso, il pensiero di ciò che ci sarà dopo; se le nostre speranze riguardano soltanto la terra (un maggior benessere economico, una vita più serena, ecc.) non siamo dei veri discepoli di Cristo, perché il vero discepolo di Cristo è "uno che aspetta", è uno che sa di essere in cammino verso una meta, è uno che sul pensiero del traguardo regola tutta quanta la sua corsa.Per chiarire questa verità fondamentale e per farci riflettere su questo punto, Gesù, nella pagina evangelica di oggi, ci propone secondo il suo solito due paragoni.1. TENIAMOCI SEMPRE PRONTI ALL'INCONTRO CON CRISTOIl primo è preso dalle abitudini delle case signorili di una volta, ed è un quadretto molto lontano dal nostro modo attuale di vivere. È la figura di un padrone che è andato a una festa di nozze senza lasciar detto l'ora del suo ritorno. Il buon servitore, dice Gesù, resta in piedi ad attenderlo tutta la notte, per essere pronto ad aprirgli subito la porta di casa, appena sentirà la sua mano bussare.Così è di noi: il nostro padrone è partito ed è andato a festeggiare nella gloria del Padre le nozze eterne tra la divinità e l'umanità, che nella immolazione della sua Pasqua sono state riconciliate e saldate per sempre tra loro. È partito, ma tornerà. Egli verrà nell'ora che non pensiamo. A noi il compito di stare desti e aspettare: nessun giorno della nostra vita deve passare senza il pensiero del ritorno imminente di Cristo.Gesù ci dice anche un'altra cosa, una cosa che nel quadro della parabola è del tutto inverosimile, ma che si avvererà alla lettera per noi, se la fine della vita ci sorprenderà nella fedeltà e nella vigilanza: Beati quei servi che il padrone al suo ritorno troverà ancora svegli; in verità vi dico, si cingerà le sue vesti, li farà mettere a tavola e sarà lui a servirli.E cioè noi entreremo nel Regno di Dio non più come servi, ma come figli del Re che godranno per sempre della sua intimità.2. NON AVREMO NESSUN PREAVVISOIl secondo paragone è ancora più chiaro, ed è comprensibilissimo ai nostri tempi, soprattutto di questi giorni, quando i ladri saccheggiano e devastano gli appartamenti deserti. Nessun ladro - dice Gesù - manda il preavviso con il giorno e con l'ora in cui ha deciso di venire a rubare; il ladro viene sempre all'improvviso. Ebbene, anche il Signore, nella sua visita decisiva, verrà a noi come un ladro.Il che significa che nessuno conosce il momento né della fine del mondo né della fine della sua vita personale. E proprio per questo non ci è consentita nessuna distrazione: tutte le ore dell'esistenza vanno vissute nella fedeltà e nella coerenza col Vangelo di Cristo, perché l'ultima ora non ci sorprenda col cuore inaridito e senza fede, coll'egoismo soffocatore di ogni amore, con l'animo lontano e ribelle al Dio che è la fonte della nostra salvezza.Tenetevi pronti - teniamoci pronti - perché il Figlio dell'uomo verrà nell'ora che non pensate.

Fourth Sunday in Lent Old Testament Joshua 5:9-12 The Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt." And so that place is called Gilgal to this day. While the Israelites were camped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year. The Epistle 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 From now on, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. The Gospel Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 All the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them." So Jesus told them this parable: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly, bring out a robe--the best one--and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. "Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.' Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, 'Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!' Then the father said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.'"
