Does ambition have to be seen as corrupting, or like a kind of illness'? These are the questions the business writer Stefan Stern asks in his book, Fair or Foul: the Lady Macbeth Guide to Ambition. He argues that far from the cliché of a scheming wife, Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth demonstrates a more sophisticated understanding of human nature, that could help us navigate the pitfalls of ambition today. The playwright Zinnie Harris made Lady Macbeth the hero of her adaptation of the classic play last year. But now she's focused on the figure of The Duchess of Malfi, in a contemporary retelling. Played by the actor Jodie Whittaker, the Duchess defies her family's wishes and control, and asserts her own desires, with devastating results. The Duchess is on at the Trafalgar Theatre, London until 20th December.Mary Queen of Scots spent nearly two decades imprisoned under the orders of Elizabeth I. From her chambers she wrote countless letters, many of them in code. Now 400 years after her death a new cache of encrypted letters has been uncovered. Jade Scott, a historian and expert on Mary's correspondence, brings her captivity to life in Captive Queen: The Decrypted History of Mary, Queen of Scots. Producer: Katy Hickman

In April 2024, new evidence was released in the Madeline Soto case, specifically an interview with Jennifer Soto, Madeline's mother. The interview took place on April 18, 2024, at the state attorney's office. This interview occurred after Madeline's body was discovered on March 1st, 2024. At that time, while Stefan Stern had been charged with 60 counts of crimes, no one had yet been charged with Madeline's death. However, six days after Jennifer Soto's interview, Stefan was charged with first-degree murder in Madeline's death and now faces the death penalty. Key details from the interview indicate that Jennifer was present with her attorney due to an investigative subpoena, which compelled her to attend. She was also granted derivative use immunity, which means that while the statements made in her interview cannot be used against her in court, she could still face prosecution if other evidence of a crime is discovered. Importantly, this immunity is not total, and Jennifer could still be charged if other independent evidence arises. As of the time of the interview, Jennifer Soto had not faced any charges. Book Club #106 - Fair or Foul - The Lady Macbeth Guide to Ambition - Richard chats to journalist and friend Stefan Stern about his terrific book about the positives and negatives of ambition, Fair or Foul. What prompted him to tackle this subject? Why is the play Macbeth the perfect scaffolding for this discussion and what do people need for their ambitions to be considered a success. They chat about Boris Johnson, Elizabeth Holmes, the effect of lockdown and mortality on ambitions, why you need to set goals and why you need to be able to change those goals as you move along. Why do we lose ambition somewhat in middle age and is it just to do with our failure to achieve what we hoped to achieve and is ambition tied to mental illness or is that only the case if we are only out for ourselves.Buy the book here - https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/fair-or-foul-the-lady-macbeth-guide-to-ambition-stefan-stern/7650720?ean=9781800183186See Rich's stand-up tour Can I Have My Ball Back - https://richardherring.com/ballback/ Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. In a detailed episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," Jennifer Coffindaffer, a retired FBI special agent, explores the tragic case of 13-year-old Maddie Soto's murder. With the prime suspect being Stefan Stern, the live-in boyfriend of Maddie's mother, Jen Soto, the discussion delves into the complexities of the investigation, highlighting the significance of digital evidence, the need for comprehensive witness interviews, and the potential for uncovering more about Maddie's final days. Coffindaffer expresses skepticism towards Jen Soto's innocence, suggesting that the ongoing investigation aims to gather more incriminating evidence before making an arrest. Key points discussed: The importance of thoroughly analyzing digital evidence, including phone data, to establish the suspects' locations and interactions. The role of witness interviews, especially among Maddie's peers, to possibly uncover confidences about the abuse or her intentions to escape it. Speculation about Maddie's desire to live in the woods as a potential escape from abuse or a fabricated story by the perpetrator to mislead the investigation. The contrasting behaviors and potential complicity of Jen Soto in the abuse and murder, considering her questionable statements and actions. The broader context of abuse cases, suggesting that if Jen Soto had knowledge of or aided in the abuse, she might still face legal consequences despite being a victim of abuse herself. #MaddieSoto #JusticeForMaddie #DigitalEvidence #WitnessInterviews #EscapeAbuse #ComplicityInAbuse #HiddenKillersPodcast Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
