What is the Abundance Agenda and how do we get there? Atlantic writer and author Derek Thompson and former Congressional candidate Suraj Patel join the show to discuss how to build an abundant society.  Are the problems we're facing problems of scarcity?  If the things we need like medical care, housing, and child care are getting scarcer and more expensive, why is the supply so low?  How can we increase the supply of those things?  And most importantly - how can we build a winning political coalition for the ideas that will increase supply and build abundance? Rep. Jerry Nadler and Rep. Carolyn Maloney have had a long history of friendship and working together in Congress. But when the new maps were approved for the 12th Congressional District, they were faced with a tough call: sit out the next election or run against a longtime colleague. Now, the politicians from the East Side and the West Side are facing off. Making the race more interesting is a third candidate, Suraj Patel, who hopes that he can pull enough votes away from the septuagenarians to secure a victory. Pat Kiernan speaks with NY1 political reporters to discuss the race.

Candidates Carolyn Maloney, Jerry Nadler and Suraj Patel met this week on the debate stage in the race for the 12th Congressional District, which recently combined large swaths of the west and east sides of Manhattan. NY1's Zack Fink, Courtney Gross and Juan Manuel Benítez shared their takeaways of the showdown, hosted by Spectrum News NY1/WNYC-Gothamist. They also offered some insight of who may have made the most impact, noting that the incumbents leaned on their many achievements, while Patel campaigned for fresh energy in Congress. Listen to the full showdown, co-moderated by Errol Louis, in which the candidates looked to distinguish themselves ahead of the August 23 primary. Putting yourself in the right positive mindset to achieve your goals is certainly no secret.  It's a shame that more people aren't dialed in to thinking in a manner which bring them a positive outcome.   Unfortunately, there are many events in our environment over a lifetime that hijack the way we think.  Once you become the pessimist, you're statistically going to live 5 years less than if you were an optimist.  When experiencing positive emotions, the brain responds by making a concoction of neurochemicals (endorphins, dopamine and oxytocin to name a few) which help you to feel good and stay healthy.  In 2020, the power of the positive has an enemy.  It's the pandemic and all that goes with it. Join me and my buddy Suraj Patel as we chat about The Power of the Positive Mind and the challenges we face today.  We discuss some easy to implement strategies to help you cope more effectively.  Stay positive my friend. Too often people in my age bracket (50's) berate the current generation on their sense of entitlement and radical stance on things that tear down rather than build up.  To be honest, this does exist, but to what extent and why?  The answer lies in the people who molded them.  Was it the pussification of America perpetuated by parents, so-called mental health experts, school curriculum, Washington law makers or social media?  The answer is all of it.  So, for just a moment I want to cut them some slack. Say hello to Suraj Patel.  A few months ago this 26-year-old man reached out not me on social media after hearing my podcast and took a chance.  He asked to be a guest and I thought “That's cool. A young person with initiative”.  It piqued my curiosity and I immediately said YES!  Suraj represents the next generation of Americans who love this country and will let his hard work and experience do his talking.  Fortunately for us we get to hear his words of hope, perseverance, failure, triumph, love, and family.  It is so refreshing to know the future of our country is, in part, in the hands of a man worthy of the American Dream.  Check out what he has to say. It may not come as much of a surprise that New York’s 12th district, which includes much of Manhattan and Queens, is considered a solidly Democratic district. In 2016, it went to Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump by a whopping 69.8 points. A Republican has not won election to Congress in the district since 1958, with none having even broken 20% of the vote since Democrat Shirley Chisholm's victory in 1968. So instead of worrying about whether the 12th will go red, spectators are always focused on the Democratic primary, which could indicate how far left the party is going. And Suraj Patel is ready to be the party's leftward pull in NY-12. Suraj is a lawyer, activist, educator, and first-generation American who worked for Barack Obama since his 2008 presidential campaign. When Donald Trump was inaugurated, Suraj got quick to work joining the resistance, even volunteering to protect immigrants facing deportation and travelers stuck at JFK due to the Muslim ban. Suraj Patel joined us on the podcast to talk about the #AbolishICE movement, how to turn out voters in a district that only has 8% Democratic primary turnout, the difficulty of challenging an established incumbent in the New York political machine and more! This podcast is sponsored by: Parkway Politics. Since 2016, so many of us have become very active in politics. However, we tend to forget what our state and local governments are doing because of the chaos in D.C. and this is why Ron, Jay and Brian, the hosts of Parkway Politics, have created a podcast to discuss the important local issues. If you are up for a great discussion about New Jersey politics and issues, then subscribe to the Parkway Politics Podcast. It’s important to voice the state and local issues to make sure they are not going unchecked. There are plenty of great podcasts out there that talk about national issues, but Parkway Politics is focused solely on delivering what is happening in New Jersey. Follow them on Twitter @ParkwayPolitics and, of course, subscribe anywhere you get your podcasts.

I'm back on the mic to talk to Akaash about the interview he and Surina had with Suraj Patel, and man was I refreshed. Hearing him talk about the state of politics and where we all fit in made me feel really hopeful. His stance on the fact that South Asians feel like they are outsiders, but that is only in their head is an important message for us all of us. We also dove into the divide in our community politically, and predicted what the political landscape will look like in 25 years. As always, we end with tweets and emails from the community that address past episodes, including an important email from a listener that gives better tips on how to look for therapists! Enjoy and please share!

In our dope new episode, Akaash and guest host Surina Jindal sit down with our first political guest and possibly the Brown Obama: Suraj Patel. They sit down and chart all the wild things he did before finding himself as an “advance man” in Obama’s first Presidential Campaign. Suraj also tells us about growing up in Indiana in a small town with no diversity, and how as a young man he subscribed to the societal philosophy of a melting pot and how that has now shifted. He then breaks down our community’s influence in politics and what that is/where that comes from. He then shares his thoughts on how we all need to be more involved. Finally he drops a profound message about privilege and what we really should do with what we have. Make sure to tune in and send your thoughts!
