Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. Our guest this week is Marissa Nadler. Last month, she released her 10th album, New Radiations, via Sacred Bones Records. Like much of her work, New Radiations exudes—like how we didn't say “radiates” there?—a spooky, haunted feel. Following 2021's full rock band outing The Path of the Clouds, the self-produced new album finds Nadler focusing on sparser, more solitary zones, her subtle finger-picking augmented by touches of electric guitar, pedal steel, organ, and synths by Milky Burgess and additional synths by longtime collaborator Randall Dunn. “Psychic sensations (you know what you saw)/New radiations, have taken their toll on me,” Nadler sings on the title track, illuminating the strange darkness and fractured sense of reality that permeates the album. In these songs, which feature spaceships, lonesome pilots, cosmic collisions, holograms, and references to Martin Scorsese, Nadler draws dark shapes into the light, creating a bewildering science fiction folk epic that's as enticing as it is foreboding. This week, she joins us for a discussion about cinema, making art, working a day job, her connections to the world of heavy metal, and dish about her new forthcoming band.
U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler (D, NY-12) talks about his decision to retire at the end of this session of Congress, plus reflects on his long career in politics, and the latest news of the day.
This week, there were two separate reports that Trump administration officials are considering offering Mayor Eric Adams a job if he drops his reelection bid, possibly helping Andrew Cuomo against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral race. But after Mamdani soundly defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary, would such a move even work? And where does Republican Curtis Sliwa fit into this unpredictable mayoral mix? NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Kelly Mena break down a chaotic week in the mayor's race. After that, Manhattan Rep. Jerry Nadler, a liberal lion and Capitol Hill veteran, announced his retirement after more than three decades in office. What does this mean for the future of Democratic leadership in New York and who might step up to fill his shoes? The “Off Topic” team looks at Nadler's lengthy career in New York politics.

How does a new technology get adopted by 40% of American doctors in just 18 months? In an era where the golden age of biotechnology has also created a dark age of physician burnout, OpenEvidence found the answer by fundamentally changing how doctors access critical information. OpenEvidence founder Daniel Nadler sits down with Sarah Guo and Elad Gil to discuss how his company solved the semantic search problem in medicine. He talks about the strategy of treating doctors as consumers, striking the balance of keeping patients in the loop in medical conversations, and how technology will reshape both medicine and medical education. Plus, Daniel gives his thoughts on the roots of motivation, as well as his philosophy for recruitment. Sign up for new podcasts every week. Jon Herold opens this Friday edition with a special guest: Annie from Willow Wind Farm, the woman behind Soft Disclosure's natural body care products. Annie shares her journey from a Colorado natural foods career to running an 85-acre alpaca and sheep ranch, where she now handcrafts lotions, deodorants, and tallow bars with locally sourced ingredients. She talks about sustainability, the challenges of creating sensitive recipes like deodorant, and why using pure, farm-based inputs matters. Jon and Annie reflect on her role as both a breeder and a maker, her deep ties to the Badlands community, and the joy she finds in creating products that people love. After the interview, Jon pivots to the headlines, Trump's reposts of August stories on Truth Social, John Bolton's unsealed search warrant, ICE's massive hiring spree, Nadler's retirement, and Biden's controversial use of an auto-pen for pardons. With a mix of personal storytelling, sponsor shoutouts, and sharp political analysis, this episode blends community spotlight with cutting-edge news.
Chelsea Clinton and Jack Schlossberg (grandson of John F. Kennedy) are reportedly both eyeing New York Congressman Jerry Nadler's seat now that he's planning to call it quits. Congressman Nadler's district covers high-profile New York neighborhoods: Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and everything down to Union Square. Apparently, these two nepo babies aren't ready to let go of their fancy zip codes just yet. The Prop 50 Messaging BlitzProposition 50 is one of the most nakedly strategic plays in this cycle. It exists for one purpose: to eliminate California's independent redistricting board so Democrats can gerrymander five seats back — a direct response to Republicans doing the same in red states. That's the whole game. Strip away the messaging, and it's a power move. The ads hitting the airwaves now make it clear how the campaign is going to run: targeted, segmented, and intensely focused on turnout.Gavin Newsom's out front, naturally. The first ad is just him — classic ego-forward strategy. The second ad is aimed squarely at the Bay Area and Los Angeles liberal base, the same model they used to win his recall election. It's all about maximizing favorable turnout in deep blue pockets. They've run this play before, and they know it works — but back then, they had a longer runway. This time, they're racing the clock. Then there's the third ad. That one's for the independents, and its existence tells you everything. The campaign knows that gutting an independent redistricting board is a tough sell outside the bubble. They say it's temporary. I don't buy that. Nobody gives up control once they get it — not in politics. The only way this doesn't work is if moderates see through the language and call it what it is. That last ad shows they're worried that might happen.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. He's one of those figures who's always just sort of been there — a Manhattan political mainstay who most recently made headlines during Trump's first impeachment. That might end up being his most lasting national footprint. He barely held onto his seat after being redistricted into a brutal primary with Carolyn Maloney. He survived that one, but it felt like the end of something. Now he's officially retiring. He says it's time to pass the torch, and he's backing his former aide, Michael Lasher, to take over. That makes sense. It's a controlled handoff. The district will stay blue. The torch will stay in the family. Nadler might not have been the flashiest member of Congress, but he was consequential — particularly in the Judiciary Committee, where he held the gavel through some of the most heated partisan fights of the Trump era.He stepped aside from that leadership role after Jamie Raskin challenged him, and that felt like the start of the wind-down. There wasn't really a lane left for him in this current version of the Democratic Party. He's not the TikTok-friendly progressive, and he's not the compromise-seeking centrist. He's just an old-school liberal from New York. And now, like a lot of others in his generation, he's finally closing the book.Virginia Foxx and the Epstein FilesRepresentative Virginia Foxx, chair of the House Rules Committee, announced she won't use her panel to block Thomas Massie's discharge petition demanding the release of the Epstein files. That's a big move — maybe even a signal. The Republican leadership has been slow-rolling this whole thing, not wanting to get too close to whatever comes out of those documents. But Foxx just let it breathe.Massie's move has bipartisan cover — he's working with Democrat Ro Khanna — and it's gaining momentum. Speaker Mike Johnson says he supports “maximum disclosure,” but that there need to be protections for victims. That's the dodge. That's how they're all trying to walk this line — publicly in favor of transparency, privately praying it doesn't land on their doorstep. The buzz on the Hill is that DOJ will release just enough of the Epstein files to make the issue go away. Maybe that works. Maybe not. But one thing's clear: the discharge petition isn't just symbolic anymore. It's a real threat. And the fact that leadership isn't moving to squash it says a lot about how much weaker those levers of control have gotten. Foxx's choice here wasn't just about process — it was a quiet acknowledgment that the old rules don't apply. Not with this. Not anymore.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:25 - Interview with Dillon Fleharty00:45:49 - Update00:48:02 - Prop 50 ads00:53:05 - Jerry Nadler00:55:08 - Virginia Foxx00:56:47 - Interview with Dillon Fleharty, con't01:35:24 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. Jon Herold kicks off the week with sharp analysis of Trump's announcement to move U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama, calling it a “devoproof” that reinforces how Biden's reversal never truly stuck. He then breaks down a federal judge's ruling against Trump's National Guard deployment in Los Angeles, framing it as lawfare that will inevitably reach the Supreme Court. From there, Jon digs into ODNI reforms under Tulsi Gabbard, including the disbanding of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center, tying it to Russiagate abuses and Durham's ignored whistleblower evidence. The episode also covers Treasury bond turmoil after tariff rulings, the Russia-China “Power of Siberia 2” pipeline deal, Trump's comments on Israel's weakening lobby, Nadler's retirement, Giuliani's Medal of Freedom, Lisa Cook's mortgage fraud scandal, and the Pentagon sending 600 military lawyers to serve as immigration judges. Blending news, personal anecdotes, and sponsor shout-outs, Jon weaves together geopolitics, lawfare, and cultural battles in his signature no-nonsense style.

Hello Brave Friends, you know we encourage sisterhood on this podcast but we don't always talk about the unexpected community that can form around our children with unique needs, when we're open to it. And sometimes that means having a broader idea about who that community may include. It might NOT be other mom's, even care-giving mom's with kids the same age because hey, they're BUSY! Instead, it might be a retired neighbor looking for some way to be of service, a single friend who has the time to help you take your kid to the park, it might even be a paid care-giver who bonds with your child and builds a lasting relationship with them. So in our last episode of season four, we have a beautiful topic for you, how to build an entourage of love around your child. For this episode, host Jessica Patay speaks with author, speaker and psychotherapist, Emma Nadler who wrote a beautiful memoir called The Unlikely Village of Eden. Beyond building an entourage of love, they discuss a whole spectrum of things including: the shock of and culture around a child's diagnosis, the importance of not giving up on community and why we have to FIGHT FOR OURSELVES, asking for help again and again because WE'RE WORTH IT. The Unlikely Village of Eden is an insightful and wholehearted look at the long-ignored realities so many families live with daily. Nadler is a trusted guide who confronts both hope and despair as she gives readers the gift of what it looks like to redefine love, success, family, and community.Find Emma's website and links to order her beautiful book, The Unlikely Village of Eden, here.Brave Together Parenting is the podcast for We are Brave Together, a not-for-profit organization based in the USA. Interview with Dr. Hank Sheinkopf, Prominent Democratic pollster and consultant, who was recently featured in a Wall Street Journal article titled, Can Anyone Stop Zohran Mamdani? Dr. Sheinkopf has worked on an estimated 700 political domestic and international political campaigns. June 24, 2025 will go down in history as the day that New York City, the Big Apple, experienced a political earthquake never seen before. A 33 year old Zohran Mamdani, with ZERO government experience, shook the City and beyond to its core, by winning the Democratic primary for New York City. A young man, whose ideology is the furthest to the left that we have ever witnessed. Not only is he a virulent antisemite in a City that has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, but his platform goes against EVERYTHING New York is about; From promising rent control to opening government run grocery stores, to promising free buses, free childcare, strengthening New York City's status as a “sanctuary city,” and defunding the police. All of these issues and more, will be paid for, according to Mamdani, by raising taxes on billionaires, whom he said, shouldn't exist. He was the founder of the antisemitic group, Students for Justice in Palestine, while attending Bowdoin College, he has refused to denounce “globalize the intifada,” which is a call for violence against the Jews worldwide, supports the BDS movement to delegitimize the State of Israel, and even vowed, though he has no standing, to have Israel's PM arrested when he comes to New York. And lest anyone think that he is the typical leftist who is rebellious against his parents, his father is a professor at Columbia University, who believes that “suicide bombers” are a legitimate weapon of war, and that they are soldiers, not terrorists. Mamdani has also said he would appoint former disgraced, antisemitic Congressman, Jamaal Bowman as his Chancellor of Education. As of this Broadcast, there are 3 candidates challenging Mamdani to be the Mayor. Andrew Cuomo, the former disgraced Governor who was forced to resign over sexual harassment allegations, current Mayor Eric Adams who is running as an Independent, and Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa. The problem is, if 2 of them don't withdraw their candidacies, Mamdani is all but guaranteed victory this November. In the interview, Dr. Sheinkopf said, "Mamdani is not a Democrat, he is a Socialist who, with his millions, is "trying to hijack a bankrupt Democratic Party that now stands for nothing." According to Sheinkopf, the reason Mamdani was able to win the nomination during the primaries was thanks to a small group of people, who are generally young, who don't like those in power...but believe they are entitled to take over the world. "They are the most pampered generation in history!" "So in Mamdani, they found a candidate who never had a tough job, never worked very hard, born with 2 silver spoons in his mouth, whose parents' house was subsidized by the taxpayers because Columbia U. pays no taxes, and his father is a Professor there. Dr. Sheinkopf went on to say that "Jewish New York is finished...it's only a question of when the lights get turned out." When asked about the influence of Jewish elected officials who are supporting Mamdani, Sheinkopf said, "(Congressman) Nadler should be tossed out immediately....Should have been gone a long time ago!" Sheinkopf lamented the "stupidity" of some Jewish Democrats who think they will be accepted by a Mamdani Administration, because they don't understand that this isn't about Israel, it's about defeating the West, whose values are steeped in everything Judaism stands for. OpenEvidence is transforming how doctors access medical knowledge at the point of care, from the biggest medical establishments to small practices serving rural communities. Founder Daniel Nadler explains his team's insight that training smaller, specialized AI models on peer-reviewed literature outperforms large general models for medical applications. He discusses how making the platform freely available to all physicians led to widespread organic adoption and strategic partnerships with publishers like the New England Journal of Medicine. In an industry where organizations move glacially, 10-20% of all U.S. doctors began using OpenEvidence overnight to find information buried deep in the long tail of new medical studies, to validate edge cases and improve diagnoses. Nadler emphasizes the importance of accuracy and transparency in AI healthcare applications. Hosted by: Pat Grady, Sequoia Capital Mentioned in this episode: Do We Still Need Clinical Language Models?: Paper from OpenEvidence founders showing that small, specialized models outperformed large models for healthcare diagnostics Chinchilla paper: Seminal 2022 paper about scaling laws in large language models Understand: Ted Chiang sci-fi novella published in 1991
