With the June 24 Democratic primary fast approaching, Queens state Sen. Jessica Ramos sat down with NY1's Errol Louis for the first installment of a series of interviews with the mayoral candidates. Ramos, who hopes to become the city's first woman and Latina mayor, focused on key issues such as affordability, housing and mental health. She reflected on her journey from growing up in a working-class Colombian family in Queens to her accomplishments in the state Senate, including helping raise the minimum wage and securing relief funds for excluded workers. Throughout the conversation, Ramos highlighted how her Queens upbringing continues to shape her approach to public service and leadership. This week, mayoral candidate and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo had some highs — and some lows. He was once again confirmed to be a frontrunner in a new Siena College poll, but he was also denied millions of dollars in public matching funds because of a so-called technical glitch. Meanwhile, Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is the first mayoral candidate to max out on public matching funds. Mamdani, along with some of the other candidates, spent the week going after President Donald Trump. NY1 political director Bob Hardt, investigative reporter Courtney Gross and statehouse reporter Bernadette Hogan break down a busy week in the race for mayor. After that, the “Off Topic” team continues its series of profiles on Democratic mayoral primary candidates. This week's installment finds them discussing Jessica Ramos, the Queens state senator running to the left of most of the other candidates. Send us a textJessica Ramos is a 31-year-old registered nurse and passionate advocate for domestic violence awareness, drawing from her personal journey of survival and healing. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, Jessica's life has been shaped by her strong foundation in faith and education, which she received through attending Catholic school from preschool through college. As a teenager, she built some of her best memories at Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra and her first job at Marie Callender's in Monterey Park, where she later returned during the holidays, embracing the joy of reconnecting with her roots.Growing up in a home with divorced parents, Jessica and her sister experienced financial struggles, but both parents shared a mutual belief in providing a strong education and a safe environment. Jessica's focus on academics led her to complete a Bachelor's in Nursing and establish a solid career, but it wasn't until later that she realized her academic success had been driven by a deeper need for love and affection, stemming from unresolved childhood wounds. At 25, Jessica purchased her first home, only to find herself in an emotionally abusive relationship that would alter the course of her life. What began as a seemingly innocent relationship quickly turned toxic, leading to a cycle of emotional, verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. While she was excelling in her career as a nurse during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jessica faced a very different kind of nightmare at home—one marked by manipulation, gaslighting, and coercion. The relationship slowly stripped her of her voice, dignity, and sense of self. After enduring years of trauma, Jessica finally found the strength to escape. She sold her home, took a leave of absence from work, and began the long process of rebuilding her life from the wreckage of an abusive relationship. Although her case against her abuser was dismissed in court, Jessica's journey to healing had only just begun. With the support of loved ones, therapy, and access to resources like EMDR, somatic exercises, and organizations such as Peace Over Violence and East LA Women's Center, Jessica has taken back control of her life and found the strength to speak out about her experiences. Now, Jessica shares her story as a domestic violence survivor to spread awareness and help others who may be going through similar struggles. She hopes that by highlighting the early signs of abuse, the importance of self-worth, and the red flags to look out for, she can prevent others from enduring what she did. Her advocacy work is driven by her belief that domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of their background or education, and that life after abuse can still be full of hope, healing, and beauty.Jessica's courage and resilience have transformed her into a voice for change, and through her journey, she has embraced the stronger, wiser version of herself. Her story is a reminder that healing is possible, and she is grateful for the opportunity to share her experiences in hopes of making a difference in the lives of others.___________________Music CreditsIntroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OGStingerScarlet Fire (Sting), Otis McDonald, YouTube Audio LibraryOutroEuphoria in the San Gabriel Valley, Yone OG__________________My SGV Podcast:Website: www.mysgv.netNewsletter: Beyond the MicPatreon: MySGV Podcastinfo@sgvmasterkey.com

There probably wouldn't be enough room in a three-ring circus for all the candidates and all the drama in the race for mayor in New York City. In the wake of federal corruption charges that have been dropped against him, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is struggling in the polls. Rather than run in a crowded Democratic primary, Adams announced this month that he's skipping that race in June and will run as an independent candidate in the general election in November. Meanwhile, despite major controversies in his past, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is the early frontrunner in the crowded primary race that also includes the City Council speaker, the city comptroller and several state lawmakers. One of the early surprises in the race has been the strong showing of little-known Queens state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.  Joining NY1's Errol Louis to size up the field is Jeff Coltin, a reporter at Politico, who is an expert in local politics. Their conversation delved into the complexities of ranked-choice voting and the strategies of various candidates, including former City Comptroller Scott Stringer, current City Comptroller Brad Lander, Queens state Sen. Jessica Ramos and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. They also touched on the unpredictability of the race and the calculations candidates are making leading up to the primary and the general election. The weird thing about the Mets getting one-hit by the Dodgers on Friday night, as we recorded this podcast, was that it really didn't feel like they were having a one-hitter thrown against them. After all, Brandon Nimmo had led off the game with a home run… except, it was a double… and then there just wasn't another hit. That the game was scoreless when we started talking is unusual for this year's Mets, who continue to dig themselves into holes, both on a micro and macro level. Here's a chart that doesn't need numbers (each axis goes from .600 to .950, for the record): OPS allowed in the first inning, and by starting pitchers overall. Being all the way to the right means that you're putting yourself behind the eight ball.Or, you can just see the Mets on the opposite side of a graphic with Atlanta and know exactly how things are going, can't you? At least the Mets giving up runs in this game gave us an excellent moment of the crowd going absolutely wild at the mention of a train along the Grand Central Parkway. Let's go! This week on All Ears, Abby talks food and food policy with New York State Senator Jessica Ramos. Jessica burst onto the New York political scene in 2018 when she and several other progressive candidates ousted a powerful group of conservative New York Democrats who had been crossing party lines to caucus with Republicans. She represents District 13 in Queens, where more than 24,000 food workers live in just three square miles. In 2019 Jessica helped pass the Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act, which gave farmworkers in upstate New York long overdue rights, things like overtime pay and unemployment insurance. She also pushed hard to remove New York City's cap on street vending permits.  In this week's conversation with Abby, Jessica discusses her love of food, her love of Queens, the powerful influence of Julia Child's unmitigated use of butter, and why our country is long overdue for comprehensive immigration reform.  And you won't want to miss the tasty story that kicks off the episode: All Ears Producer Christine Schomer profiles vendors who work in Corona Plaza, one of the most exciting and diverse outdoor food courts in the country--just blocks from Senator Ramos' office. To learn more about The Street Vendor Project, visit https://svp.urbanjustice.org/EPISODE LINKS New York Times, Food Is Not a Prop For Senator Jessica Ramos, It's a Platform, 2021 New York Times, No Papers, No Jobs: The New Street Vendors of Queens, 2020City and State New York, Jessica Ramos isn't sugarcoating anything, 2020Grub Street, State Senator Jessica Ramos Likes Her Food Very Local, 2019New York Focus, Unlicensed Street Vendors Fear Steep Fines as Enforcement Escalates, 2021Eater, City Council Moves to Lift Street Vendor Permit Cap in Historic Vote, 2021New York City Business Solutions, Street VendingInstitute for Justice, Groundbreaking Report Highlights Economic Impact of New York City Vendors, 2015
