The Golden Road: How Ancient India Transformed the World is the new book by the celebrated historian William Dalrymple. For listeners of Grand Tamasha, Dalrymple surely needs no introduction. He is the bestselling author of nine books, including The Last Mughal, The Anarchy, and City of Djinns. He is cofounder of the Jaipur Literature Festival and cohost of the wildly popular podcast, “Empire,” with Anita Anand. His new book, The Golden Road, highlights India's often forgotten role as a crucial economic fulcrum, and civilizational engine, at the heart of the ancient and early medieval worlds. It tells the story of the forgotten Indosphere and its multiple legacies. To talk more about his new book, William joins Milan from our studio in Washington, D.C. They discuss the reasons the Indosphere has been obscured from history, the alluring narrative of the Sinocentric “Silk Road,” and Buddhism's extraordinary journey around the world. Plus, the two discuss the deep penetration of the Hindu epics into Asia, India's scientific and mathematical discoveries, and whether an Indian mindset of cultural absorption and synthesis can be recovered.Episode notes:1. Our next guest is insatiably curious, hyper-focused, and charismatic. I got the sense that he's always all in on the task at hand. That being said, he's balancing a family, a full-time job as Chief Innovation Officer/Senior Partner at Cultivate, and slowly growing a Chicago-based brewery with Indian heritage. The first half of the episode was a reflection on his coming of age and how we can affect culture. The second half was a reflection on what beer means to us and how Azadi Brewing got their start with Pilot Project. This episode covers the the last part of chapter 17: “On his return from Puri, Sri Yukteswar...” to end of the chapter (and the long footnote). Summary: How did Sri Yukteswar intervene to enhance the academic offering of Serampore College (solely for the benefit of his principal disciple Mukunda)? An intriguing question, one which we discuss in this section along with the long footnote provided by Paramahansa Yogananda on the importance of spirituality in education, and the limitations of materialistic and scientific understanding. We also explored the concept of a Gurukula, a type of spiritual boarding school, and reflected on the significance of a captivating picture of Mukunda meditating (at the age of 16). The conversation ended with a discussion on the key learnings from chapter 17. 0:00 Prior episode; 3:34 Moving Mukunda to Serampore; 10:41 The divine hand at work; 15:40 That only which we see within...; 28:37 Avidya - false knowledge; 31:40 Schools in ancient India; 39:10 Picture of Mukunda; 46:05 Reflections on chapter. Walking through the grandeur of Amber Fort or witnessing the heart-wrenching reality of children begging in the streets, one is constantly reminded of life's radical duality. This coexistence of opposites is a powerful teacher in the yogic tradition, where we are called to witness without attachment. The practice of holding both beauty and pain with equanimity lies at the heart of our spiritual evolution. Embracing the Extremes: Beauty and Suffering Intertwined India amplifies the senses. The vibrant markets, ornate temples, and intricate craftsmanship offer a feast for the eyes, while the rawness of human suffering confronts us at every corner. It is tempting to be swept away by either extreme—to revel in the beauty or to grieve the suffering—but true wisdom lies in the ability to hold both without preference. Life's richness comes not from avoiding discomfort or chasing pleasure, but from embracing the tension between the two. The Spiritual Path: Detachment in the Face of Duality The mind seeks to categorize experiences as ‘good' or ‘bad,' yet the teachings remind us that duality is an illusion. We are called to bear witness to both extremes, knowing that they are transient and that neither defines the deeper reality. The practice of detachment, of seeing without being swayed by the highs or the lows, is essential on the spiritual path. In navigating life's contrasts, we cultivate a stillness within—one that remains unshaken by the duality of external circumstances. This is the essence of our practice, and it is here that we find our deepest strength and wisdom.
