The Small Business Association of Michigan’s Small Business Weekly Podcast

On today's SBAM Weekly Podcast, Michael Rogers talks with Catherine Behrenbrinker, President & CEO of Symplicity Communications, helping businesses procure technology. “I think the biggest thing about Symplicity is, one of the fun things that we experienced with one of our clients is that they named us the dragon slayers,” she says. “And that's because there's some big technology dragons out there. What do I use? What should I use? How do I interpret this? How do I understand that?” The Small Business Association of Michigan is the only statewide and state-based association that focuses solely on serving the needs of Michigan's small business community. We have been successfully serving small businesses like yours in all 83 counties of Michigan since 1969. We're located in Lansing, just one block from the Capitol. Our mission is to help Michigan small businesses succeed by promoting entrepreneurship, leveraging buying power and engaging in political advocacy. When small businesses band together through the Small Business Association of Michigan, they achieve more than they could on their own.  Our 30.000+ members are as diverse as Michigan's economy. From accountants to appliance stores, manufacturers to medical, and restaurants to retailers, what unites the SBAM membership is the spirit of entrepreneurship…a spirit that drove you to start and continue to operate your own business because you believe you can do something better than anyone else is doing it! The Downsides of Trying to Scale Up in Your Business

It can be a dream for a lot of entrepreneurs to run a multi-seven figure business, but what most people don’t see is how much profit that business actually makes. With so many employees on staff, you could end up making less money than someone who runs an incredibly lean business. Don’t fall into the scaling-up trap! Your three co-hosts, Gabe, Ryan, and Jon discuss some of the pitfalls they fell into when they tried to grow their businesses.   Key Takeaways: What have been some of the traps Jon and Ryan have fallen into when trying to scale their businesses? Jon was terrified of having overhead expenses and hiring his first employee. He went six years before making his first hire. Ryan thought he was being smart when he negotiated his employees lower than what they were asking for. Ryan now tries to pay his employees more than what they’re asking for. One good person, one rockstar, is better than three average people. Ryan wants a lean organization with the best people ever. Gabe has seen hiring people on 100% commission just doesn’t work. What’s the mindset behind scaling your business? Just because someone has a multi-million dollar business doesn’t mean they are netting more than someone making under a million a year and running a lean business model. Our growth as an entrepreneur is directly linked to our willingness to let go of control. The main stress of the business comes from the employees. What’s your sales process? Ryan had one sales guy corrupt their entire sales team. One bad apple caused the business over 80% in revenue loss. When Gabe tried to scale, he was just pouring cash in and his bank account became incredibly slim. It’s important to try and scope out all the things that can go wrong in your business.   Resources: Freedomblueprintshow.com Joinhandshake.com Symplicity.com

Gelfand and Levin Share Lessons from Ardian’s Rise and Fall…and Rise Again. Would They Do It Again?

Howard Levin and Mark Gelfand, the principals of Coridea, return to the podcast to detail the trials and tribulations of Ardian. Ardian is one of the bigger #medtech #startup stories over the past two decades. In 2011, Medtronic agreed to pay $800 million upfront for this company that pushed the once crazy idea of ablating renal nerves to lower hypertension. Ardian had raised $70 million from a syndicate of blue chip investors after being forged in the Foundry incubator. VCs proudly shared that the earnouts for Ardian would push that price well over $1 billion. This was a HUGE win for Medtech when it desperately needed it. Three years later came the fall. A day before JP Morgan’s Healthcare Meeting in 2014, Medtronic announced early disappointing of SYMPLICITY HTN-3, a third and larger trial of Ardian’s renal denervation. Medtronic revised the trial, running Spryal HTN on patients who didn’t take any medication for their hypertension – a contrast from the Symplicity trial where patients were taking an average of five medications. In these revised trials, renal denervation is performing much better. The new results exonerated Ardian’s early backers – and perhaps Gelfand and Levin, specifically. This was the team, after all, that combed through medical libraries for clues about hacking the human body to beat back hypertension. The research turned up the discovery that surgeons once would treat extremely unresponsive hypertension by severing nerves near the kidney. The procedure worked, but it was dangerous. Levin and Gelfand saw ablating tissue as a safer path. And, after a lot of trudging up and down the Valley, finally found a willing partner in the team at The Foundry. Early clinical success led to a renal denervation gold rush. Nearly every VC and Strategic investor had a bet in this space. The 2014 debacle convinced many to close their programs and companies, but now Renal Denervation is back in favor. How did Howard Levin and Mark Gelfand enjoy the roller coaster ride? In this podcast, we’ll talk about Ardian, TAVR, the challenges facing Medtech VCs and the poor reception many surgeons give new interventional technologies.
