Then sweeping new tariffs sent the stock market reeling.  Vicki Bogan, who studies household finance, inequality and investment decision making, talks with Manoj Mohanan, Interim Dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, about what this latest financial shock might mean for families. Welcome back to our 7th season of the Eccles Business Buzz! And what better way to kick it off than with our new Dean Kurt Dirks.Dean Dirks started his role just a few months ago, on July 1st, 2024. Prior to joining us here at the Eccles School, Dean Dirks was the Bank of America Professor of Leadership at the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to serving as a faculty member, Dean Dirks served in multiple senior leadership roles at WashU, including as Acting Provost, Senior Advisor to the Chancellor for Leadership, Vice Chancellor of International Affairs, and as Senior Associate Dean and Interim Dean at the Business School. Kurt sits down with Host Frances Johnson to share with us a bit about his journey as a first-generation college student, the critical role of public universities, and the importance of creating a culture of belonging at the Eccles School. Dean Dirks also discusses his vision for business impact, the significance of ethical leadership and trust, and the evolving landscape of business education and AI at Eccles.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:The significance of ethical leadership and trust in shaping our approach to emerging technologies like AI [Dean Kirk Dirks] 22:01: We have a responsible AI initiative at the U, which is thinking about this, not just at the business school, but across the entire university. And so, it's something that we are a part of, our faculty are a part of, and thinking about that.On the other side of it is certainly thinking about helping our students understand their values. And when those values get challenged, how do they respond to them? Certainly, something important about being leader in whatever way we think about that, that term is really understanding your responsibility in society, in business to try to make the world better and how that applies in, you know, day to day life. And so, that's certainly one of the areas where I hope we can get each of our students to think about, that their role as a leader in society, making the world better and how that is steered by their values and their purpose.[Frances Johnson] And again, this idea that everything is business, right? We're not just learning to crunch numbers. We're not just learning to analyze data, but we're really thinking about, what's important to me? How can I bring that to an organization? How can I seek out organizations that align with that? And then how can I make a positive difference? So, the interconnection really continues.[Dean Kirk Dirks] Very powerful. There is no doubt that, if we help our students along all those facets, again, the values, the quantitative and economic skills that they have and the business mindset, I think we're going to serve them well for their life and career. How building trust can foster a unified community[Frances Johnson] 07:25: What role does trust play as we really try to build a cohesive community at the Eccles School where everyone has a place?[Dean Kirk] 07:44: In terms of the role of trust and how that fits with them, when we think about earning that trust, it really is around three things. And I think it speaks to this notion. One is a sense of competence and capability, that we have the knowledge and skills and support to really help them be able to succeed at what they want to do. Second is we talked about character, that piece of values that is important to allow students to feel a connection and that our values are consistent with theirs. And then the last piece, which really speaks directly to this is caring, that, often, when people want to be able to trust someone, they want to know that, we think about them and care about them. And I think that's a really important part of this set.Dean Kurt shares a piece of advice he wished he had when he was starting his college journey30:22: One of the most wonderful parts about being a university student is that self-discovery. You're certainly learning a lot about business, but equally important, learning a lot about yourselves and new paths. So, go out and try something new this semester. Meet a new group of people, try a new experience at the U, something that you may not have done before. And perhaps, you'll get a surprise that maybe it becomes your future.Show Links:Dean Dirks - The David Eccles School of BusinessKurt Dirks | LinkedInInstagram Post from Move-in Day 2024 at the US4E1: Helping Companies Do Good While Doing Well feat. “When I make a diagnosis of cancer, that's changing the landscape of that patient's life forever. Their trajectory is being set by the words I write down on my report. So, that's why I say pathologists are the most important doctors you'll never meet,” explains Dr. Jennifer Hunt, interim dean at the  University of Florida College of Medicine. As she tells host Michael Carrese, it was the intervention of mentors that facilitated her exploration of pathology, sparking a passion in her for the importance of mentorship and sponsorship. Her career as a practitioner, educator and leader at some of the most prestigious health systems in the country has provided Dr. Hunt with many opportunities to pay that assistance forward and has led to an interest in coaching as an additional modality for career and personal development.  “In medicine, coaching has been underutilized but as a dean, I'm seeing more requests for recruitment packages that include coaching, and I think that shows it's becoming a more mainstream tool.”  This Raise the Line episode also covers how the college is preparing students to practice medicine in a world being reshaped by artificial intelligence, and the advantage of being able to offer them a wide range of clinical settings from urban to rural, and academic to community-based. “We have educational venues that cover all of the practice of medicine and that also opens up possibilities for doing community-based research and clinical trials enrollment across lots of different settings.” Mentioned in this episode: University of Florida College of Medicine

Rev. Dr. Jacob Corzine, associate professor of theology and Interim Dean of the College of Theology, Arts, and Humanities at Concordia University, Chicago, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 John 5:1-12. St. John continues to weave together the strands of his first epistle to present the full tapestry of the Christian faith. True faith in Jesus as the Son of God goes together with love for each other as Christians. We keep God's commandments as a part of our vocations given by God, knowing that He has done the work of salvation for us. By faith in Him, we have the victory that overcomes the world. The water and the blood of Jesus' pierced side testify to who He is, along with the Holy Spirit; we receive this testimony still in the Word and Sacraments. By faith, we have this testimony within us. God has given us eternal life in His Son; when we have Jesus, we have life. “The Love of God” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the three epistles written by St. John the Apostle and Evangelist. As St. John rejoiced to be the disciple loved by Jesus, so he writes his epistles to give us the same joy when we know that we are the beloved of God. God's love for us in Jesus shapes our lives as Christians in all that we believe, say, and do.

I recently attended a film appreciation class with Dale Pollock, called Senior Moments. And yes, as the name suggests, it was a look into how the film industry, Hollywood in particular, has treated aging. Not surprisingly it has not done a stellar job. When I asked Dale to tell me more about how the industry has changed, he said we've come a long way from depicting older characters as simply being the crazy old biddy or the wise decrepit grandfather. Especially when you look at a film like “Good Luck to you Leo Grande,” with Emma Thompson. He believes that advances in science and technology with regards aging will inform filmmaking and stories. When I ask Dale if there is anything that actors, filmmakers, and the industry in general can do to improve accurate and authentic representation of older characters, he points to three main things. The first is, as actors we must embrace our older selves. His second point is that directors, who are typically ‘risk averse', need to be more willing to cast 50-year-old characters who actually look 50. He also says those teaching in the many film schools around the country have to continue to move towards a more generous view of aging. He says, only then will filmmakers fully realize the dramatic and comedic potential of aging.  Dale M. Pollock received a BA in Anthropology from Brandeis University in 1972 and MS in Communications from San Jose State University. In 1977, he became the head film critic for the Daily Variety until he was hired by the Los Angeles Times to be their chief entertainment correspondent.  He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in the early 1980s and wrote Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas in 1984, which has sold more than 150,000 copies and remains in print. In 1985, Pollock joined David Geffen's company as a development executive, where he discovered the scripts for Beetlejuice, The Burbs and Universal Soldier.  He joined A&M Films as vice president in charge of production, and was named president in 1990, producing such films as The Beast, The Mighty Quinn, A Midnight Clear and Mrs. Winterbourne. Pollock ran his own film company Peak Productions for 10 years, producing the box office hit Set It Off.   He co-founded the producing program at the American Film Institute in 1995. In 1999 he became Dean of the School of Filmmaking at the (then) North Carolina School of the Arts, stepping down in 2006 to become Professor of Cinema Studies. He was awarded Emeritus status in 2019 and served as Interim Dean for nine months in 2021. Pollock was awarded an Endowed Professorship in Film in his name at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking and is the 2016 recipient of the UNC Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence. He also received the 2020 Arts Council of Winston Salem's Annual Award, its highest honor. Pollock's first work of fiction, Chopped: A Novel will be published in February 2023, and he is at work on a book about how Hollywood has treated aging in the movies. Learn more about Dale Pollockhttps://www.imdb.com/name/nm0689645/https://dalempollock.com If you want to chat or ask questions about the episode go to FB: https://www.facebook.com/tarmeydanielle/and visit the group site. Follow me on: IG: @tarmeydanielle Twitter: @TarmeyDanielle
