An encore of Ted Barris on his book, Battle of Britain - Canadian Airmen in Their Finest Hour.
In 1940, for 113 harrowing days, Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe unleashed relentless attacks on Great Britain, aiming to secure an early victory in World War II. The defence of southern England fell to the brave pilots of the Royal Air Force, joined in their hour of need by over 100 Canadian airmen. These men, hailing from all walks of life—some from prominent families, others fresh off the farm—served with distinction in 47 different Battle of Britain squadrons. In this episode, Ted Barris, author of Battle of Britain: Canadian Airmen in their Finest Hour, joins me to explore their incredible contributions during this pivotal chapter of the war. patreon.com/ww2podcast

Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
In this podcast episode, Larry Ostola talks to Ted Barris about his book The Battle of the Atlantic: Gauntlet of Victory published by HarperCollins in 2022. In Battle of the Atlantic, Ted Barris provides a well-researched account of Canada's longest continuous military engagement during the Second World War. The years 2019 to 2025 mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic - the war's most critical and dramatic battle of attrition. For five and a half years, German surface warships and submarines attempted to destroy Allied trans-Atlantic convoys, most of which were escorted by Royal Canadian destroyers and corvettes, as well as aircraft of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Throwing deadly U-boat “wolf packs” in the paths of the convoys, the German Kriegsmarine almost succeeded in cutting off this vital lifeline to a beleaguered Great Britain. During the desperate days and nights of the Battle of the Atlantic, the Royal Canadian Navy grew to 400 fighting ships and over 100,000 men and women in uniform; by V-E Day in 1945, it had become the fourth largest navy in the world. While Canadians think of the Great War battle of Vimy Ridge as the country's coming of age, it was the Battle of the Atlantic that proved Canada's gauntlet to victory and a nation-building milestone. Ted Barris is an award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster. His writing has regularly appeared in the national press as well as a wide variety of magazines. He's also worked as a host and contributor for CBC Radio, PBS, and TV Ontario. Barris is the author of 20 best-selling nonfiction books and is a member of the Order of Canada. But they did their job which was to escort more than 25,000 merchant ships across the Atlantic during perilous times. At the age of 13, Ted Barris asked his father a common question: “Dad what did you do in the war?” This began a fifty-seven-year investigation into his father’s war experiences as a sergeant medic in the US Army during its bloodiest campaign during the liberation of Europe. The book that grew out of this question: Rush To Danger: Medics in the Line of Fire shares stories of combat medics from the American Civil War to more recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I sat down with Ted to discuss his book and the one burning question that he never had a chance to ask his father: what motivates medics to rush into danger?

Sometimes we find Canadians in the most unlikely of places. During the Second World War, within the crews of airmen responsible for breaching the Ruhr dams of Nazi Germany, there were thirty Canadians. In 1943, these men, along with about a hundred others, took to the skies in May 1943 aboard nineteen Lancaster Bombers to drop the now infamous bouncing bombs that would devastate enemy power plants, factories and German infrastructure after blowing up several dams. Now known as the Dam Busters, in this interview, Ted Barris discusses the deeds of these Canadian airmen and legacies they left behind. One of the turning points of the Second World War was the dams raid of 1943, involving Commonwealth aircrews who flew a daring, nighttime, treetop-level raid all the way from Britain to Germany to bomb the Ruhr River dams with a never-before-tried bounding bomb. In the U.K. the air raid is celebrated as if it were a national holiday. Most don't realize, however, a quarter of the 130 men who flew the "Dam Buster" raid were Canadians - 20 from Western Canada, several from Calgary!
