Safe Drinking Water Act, Explained

In this installment of the People Places Planet Explained Series, host Dara Albrecht is joined by Robin Rotman, Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri, and Camille Pannu, Associate Professor at Columbia Law School and Director of the Environmental and Climate Justice Clinic, to break down the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)—the cornerstone law protecting America's drinking water. The conversation covers SDWA's origins, its regulatory reach over public water systems, and the emerging challenges tied to small system compliance, contaminants like PFAS, and growing infrastructure needs. Rotman and Pannu explain key concepts such as maximum contaminant levels, variances, citizen suits, and the relationship between SDWA and the Clean Water Act. They also discuss notable cases like Des Moines Water Works and Flint, Michigan, and examine how funding limitations and legal battles shape drinking water protections today. Looking forward, they reflect on future developments in private well regulation, point-of-use treatment technologies, and technical assistance for vulnerable communities. This episode offers an essential primer for anyone interested in how public health, environmental law, and infrastructure converge at the tap. ★ Support this podcast ★

The Costs of Protectionism: Professor Walid Hejazi on Trump's Tariff Policy, Economic Instability, and the Global Market

Beyond the Headlines

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 58:29

In his return to office, President Donald Trump has intensified the use of tariffs as a central instrument of U.S. trade policy. Recent measures have expanded tariffs on strategic imports, particularly from China, and continued the application of steel and aluminum tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, as well as broader sanctions under Section 301 investigations into intellectual property practices. These policies have been positioned as efforts to protect national industries, reduce trade deficits, and bolster American economic sovereignty, while also signaling a more assertive U.S. approach to global commerce. Despite these intentions, the structure and execution of these tariff measures have introduced volatility into global markets. Empirical analyses indicate that while select domestic sectors have experienced short-term benefits, overall economic costs—including higher input prices, retaliatory tariffs from trading partners, and dampened investment—have offset many of the perceived gains. International institutions such as the IMF and WTO have linked prolonged tariff conflicts to downward revisions in global growth projections. Financial markets, in turn, have exhibited heightened sensitivity to tariff escalations, reflecting broader uncertainty about the sustainability of current trade policies. This episode examines the evolving nature of American trade strategy: What distinguishes short-term political signaling from durable economic policymaking? How have Trump's tariffs reshaped global supply chains, investor confidence, and the strategic positioning of U.S. industries? And as financial markets demand greater predictability and resilience, what future pathways could be pursued to align tariff and fiscal policy with long-term competitiveness and global stability? Our special guest this week is Professor Walid Hejazi. Professor Hejazi is the Academic Director of Executive Programs and Professor of International Business, Economic Analysis, and Policy at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He is also a Fellow at the Michael Lee-Chin Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship and serves on the Board of Directors of the David & Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation. Over the course of his career, Professor Hejazi has advised private-sector firms and collaborated extensively with Canadian and international governments on foreign investment and international trade strategy. He has testified before parliamentary and senate committees, taught extensively in Rotman's MBA, EMBA, and executive education programs, and delivered lectures in over 30 countries worldwide. His research focuses on the intersection of global competitiveness, trade dynamics, and strategic economic policy, making his insights particularly timely for today's conversation. Join us as we delve into the consequences of tariff-driven protectionism, the gaps in America's current trade approach, and what more sustainable, market-stabilizing policies could look like in the years ahead.

In episode 572, Dee Rotman teaches us how to create strong results for a new blog, getting high page views from the start by building an audience on social media first. Deeckla (Dee) Rotman founded Dee & Sweets in December 2022, sharing baking recipes and tips with time-sensitive home bakers on social media. Having created over a hundred dessert recipes, Dee launched her blog in April 2024 and is already seeing strong growth. Dee became an entrepreneur after having been a marketing leader in the corporate world for most of her career. In this episode, you'll learn why Dee prioritized growing a following on Instagram before launching her blog, what she plans on prioritizing next and how she handles competition. Key points discussed: - Start building an audience on social media before launching a blog: This helps drive traffic to the new blog and establish an engaged following. - Hire help strategically: Bringing on freelancers and part-time assistants can alleviate burnout and allow you to focus on growth. - Diversify traffic sources beyond just SEO: Explore different social platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and TikTok to reach new audiences and land brand deals. - Analyze successful creators to learn and improve: Studying what works for others can inspire ideas for your own content and strategy. - Be comfortable with being uncomfortable: Embrace the challenges of entrepreneurship and use them as opportunities for growth. - Refocus comparison energy into learning: Instead of feeling demotivated by others' success, use it as motivation to improve your own skills and approach. - Prioritize mindset and self-care: Maintaining a positive, resilient mindset is crucial for sustaining a successful blogging business. - Start small and scale gradually: Some creators grow slowly and steadily overtime - this can be just or more beneficial than a sudden, rapid growth. - Leverage existing connections and relationships: Tapping into your professional network can lead to valuable partnerships and collaborations. Pro-Palestinian tent protests have spilled onto Canadian campuses. What happens next?

Show notes: At least five Canadian university campuses are now home to temporary tent cities erected by pro-Palestinian students protesting Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. The U of T, McGill, Western, the University of Ottawa and the University of British Columbia have all become focal points for protestors insisting they won't leave until their schools divest of financial ties to Israel, among other demands. Other schools like TMU are coping with sit-in protests. So far, local police departments have not forcibly cleared out the compounds, as happened earlier this week at Columbia University in New York, where the movement began. But protests on this side of the border are equally polarizing: some Jewish students and faculty have joined the protests, while Hillel and other Jewish organizations argue these demonstrations aren't peaceful, and call for the destruction of Israel and kicking Zionists off campus and out of Canada. So what's behind the phenomenon? And where will it go next? On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we hear from Opher Baron, a management professor at the University of Toronto who's worried that protests could derail an important annual conference he's hosting next week; then we're joined by Arno Rosenfeld, the Forward's antisemitism beat reporter, who's been covering the chaos from Columbia to UCLA, the University of California, Los Angeles. This week we've got a special episode, a longer one than we normally do. But when you have an opportunity, to talk to the person who built the Rotman School of Management into the powerhouse it is today, you have to use every minute you get.  Roger L. Martin was told that the Toronto's Rotman School wasn't worth his time, that it was a quote – cesspool of intrigue. Roger himself will say that he didn't do much in his 15 years as dean, just tinkering and prodding. He's a bit of an understated enigma, as you'll soon find out. But when Rotman's prestige today ranks up there with Stanford and Harvard, you can't really argue with his results.   There's so much to mine in this conversation, we thought it would be a shame to cut it down and fit it within our normal episode length. If you have the time, I'd love for you to give it more than just one listen.

Emotions and Excellence: Why processing feelings is important for leadership

Rotman Executive Summary

We often reach adulthood without ever being taught how to process our emotions. But an unprocessed emotion never goes away; it simply festers and grows. Associate professor Maja Djikic joined the Executive Summary podcast to talk about how to identify if we're bad at processing our feelings, how we can get better at it, and what role organizations have in helping their leaders and teams understanding that skillset. Show notes[0:00] “A lot of discussion on managing emotions has to do with how to make emotions go away.  Usually they're seen as something negative, something you don't want to have. This is why being called emotional seems like an insult.”[0:48] Meet Maja Djikic, an associate professor at Rotman who studies adult development and authored the recently released book, The Possible Self. [1:18] If there's one thing she wants you to know about emotions, it's that an unprocessed emotion never goes away. [1:36] Emotions are tied to our goals, and when we ignore them, we might be missing out on important information that helps move our lives forward. [2:05] What is an emotion? [2:30] How are our emotions tied to our goals, and how does this present itself?[2:53] Positive emotions reinforce that things are going well. [3:10] Negative emotions might tell us something is wrong on our path to our goal. For example, fear might tell you that you're afraid of getting fired, and that your relationships with colleagues have gone amiss. [4:15] People are bad at processing and understanding their emotions. [4:25] Some of this is evolutionary – our fight or flight instinct often kicks in when we have a strong emotion. [5:07] Let's sidebar to explain the difference between processing and expressing emotions. [5:55] The other reason we're bad at processing emotions is we're likely never taught how.[6:45] The first step in processing emotions is to recognize you're bad at it and work to improve that skillset. [7:16] The second step is to recognize you're having a strong negative emotion and bring your pre-frontal cortex back online. [8:34] Step three is to identify what you're feeling and try and link it back to the goal you're trying to achieve. [10:11] Why does this matter for a workplace? Leaders who can't process emotions create toxic environments. [10:55] Learning to process feelings should be top-down. [11:17] As a leader, how can you help your team better process their emotions? [13:10] And when those around you can't or won't learn to process their emotions? “If you're in a situation where the leadership is not interested at all and processing there. So then that becomes a choice for you to stay or to leave. There's all these people around me they're doing a lot of negative expression because they're not able to process. They don't seem to be interested in anything to do with processing in education. Okay, well, how long do I want to hang out here?

In this episode of the Veterinary Marketing Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with two incredible veterinarians, Dr. Deborah Rotman and Dr. Christie Cornelius. We discussed their groundbreaking project, Vet Spark, and how it's revolutionizing end-of-life care services in veterinary practices. Before we dive into the episode, I want to give a special shoutout to our sponsors for this episode - Used Vet Equipment and New Vet Equipment. These platforms are a game-changer for veterinarians looking to buy or sell both used and new equipment, from cages to x-ray machines and everything in between. Now, let's talk about our amazing guests. Dr. Rotman and Dr. Cornelius have a wealth of experience in veterinary medicine and have successfully built and sold their own practices. Their passion for improving end-of-life care for pets is truly inspiring. During our conversation, Dr. Rotman and Dr. Cornelius emphasized the importance of mobile end-of-life care. They suggested that smaller practices in the same area could collaborate or specialize in specific areas, like dental or radiology, to better serve their clients. They also proposed the idea of having a dedicated team within a practice solely focused on end-of-life care. We also delved into the topic of mobile euthanasia services and how veterinary practices can incorporate them into their existing client base. Our guests recommended starting by offering the service internally to current clients and then developing a marketing plan to attract new clients specifically for end-of-life services. Now, you might be wondering about the equipment needed for mobile euthanasia services. According to Dr. Cornelius, it's actually quite simple. You don't need a fancy mobile vehicle; a regular car like a Subaru Forester would do just fine. And for larger pets, a stretcher is all you need. The key is having the necessary skills, medications, and confidence to perform euthanasia in different situations. Dr. Rotman and Dr. Cornelius also emphasized the importance of differentiating veterinary practices and marketing their unique offerings. Understanding clients' needs and educating them about available treatments and services is crucial. They also mentioned the potential of leveraging technical staff and customer service to create a comprehensive palliative care program. Expanding services and building networks are essential for veterinary practices. Our guests shared strategies like skill development in areas such as vena puncture and intra-renal injections for euthanasia in cats. They also suggested reaching out to other veterinary clinics in the area to introduce yourself and request to be added to their referral list. When it comes to pricing services, Dr. Rotman and Dr. Cornelius advised against solely basing prices on competition. Instead, they recommended considering the value and costs associated with the service and establishing a pricing strategy that reflects both aspects. If you're interested in learning more or need guidance in end-of-life care practices, start-up practices, general practices, or crematories, Dr. Rotman and Dr. Cornelius offer their consulting services through Vet Spark Consulting. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Cornelius and Dr. Rotman for sharing their invaluable insights. If you have any questions or need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to them at vetsparkconsulting@gmail.com. Thank you so much for tuning in to today's episode. I hope you found it enjoyable and informative. Your support means the world to us, and we can't wait to bring you more valuable content in our next episode. Until then, have a fantastic day, everyone!
