This episode of the Black Magic Woman Podcast is a little different—we’ve switched things up! Instead of me hosting, I’m in the guest seat while my sister Kate Russell takes over the mic to interview me. We yarn about my journey—personally and professionally—from growing up in a family deeply connected to media and activism to creating the Black Magic Woman Podcast and building BlackCard, a business that has been helping organisations engage meaningfully with First Nations people and culture. I also talk about the role Supply Nation has played in BlackCard’s growth, from those early days of hustling and cold calling to landing our first major contracts. I share the challenges and opportunities for Indigenous businesses, the importance of relationships in business, and how mob can make the most of networks like Supply Nation. We also dive into lessons I’ve learned along the way, my experience working with major brands, and a recent moment where I helped guide Jamie Oliver through cultural accountability. This is something I’ve never done before—sharing my own story in this way. So if you’ve ever wondered about the person behind the mic and how BlackCard became what it is today, this one’s for you. This episode covers the issue of nutrient neutrality, which affects protected nature conservation sites that are at risk of pollution by nitrates or phosphates. Where Natural England or Natural Resources Wales identify a protected waterbody as being at risk from nutrient pollution, they will require any development which creates overnight accommodation in the same catchment to demonstrate nutrient neutrality, either by installing on-site mitigation measures or by off-setting through nutrient credits. What will you hear?Fenella Collins, CLA Head of Planning, explains the types of developments that are affected by nutrient neutrality regulations, why this issue has now come to the fore, and practical steps to take when considering a development in an affected catchment. Kate Russell, Chief Operating Officer at Tellus Natural Capital, talks us through the areas with most protected catchments, the difference between managing nitrates and phosphates, and the opportunity for landowners to consider off-site mitigation. Kate grew up in a household with two alcoholic parents who constantly subjected her to neglect and abuse. Much as she swore she would never follow in their footsteps, the pain she carried in her heart called for escape and she turned to drugs and alcohol as a teen. Over her 9 years of sobriety, Kate has been working on a memoir that is now available. Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return, Santa Fe, New Mexico. (Photo by Kate Russell, courtesy of Meow Wolf, and used with permission.). What is Meow Wolf? A DIY arts and music community? An immersive experience, based on emerging technology plus storytelling? A learning space with regular workshops, entertainment and art therapy? A network of creatives who give back to the community? Yes! All of the above. Technically, Meow Wolf describes itself as "an arts and entertainment group, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico". Established in 2008 as an art collective, they have an installation called the "House of Eternal Return" which covers 20,000 square feet. The experience, when visitors enter, starts with a deceptively normal-looking house. Then, it progresses into a science-fiction and surreal experience, which involves both augmented and virtual reality. And Meow Wolf is about to expand its community! In 2020, they'll open a new location in Las Vegas. In 2021, they're also scheduled to open a site in Denver. Lauren Cason is Meow Wolf's Creative Director of XR. We talked about XR, the story of Meow Wolf, and what visitors can experience when they come to Meow Wolf's main installation. Lauren, who mentors young women in video game art and design, also offered some of her favorite (free) resources for game creation--and shared the name of a favorite book for artists! On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How a serendipitous occurrence led to Lauren's interest in XR; The ways her creative journey proceeded from there; What first led Lauren to come on board at Meow Wolf; How Lauren herself describes Meow Wolf; Her definition of XR (what is it, anyway?); How the artists in the collective give back to artist communities throughout the nation; One of Lauren's favorite memorable moments from the original installation, House of Eternal Return; The origins of the arts collective's unique name!; How Meow Wolf was created; Some of the special arts events which the venue hosts; A look inside House of Eternal Return; What Lauren most wants to teach the young women whom she mentors, about game development; Some of her favorite free or inexpensive resources for game development; One of the best creative lessons Lauren has learned, since the start of her career as an artist; And, a book she especially recommends!

Mosquito born and potentially devastating for unborn babies, Zika could be a serious threat to our unborn. There is an uneasiness that you can feel among the 20 and 30 somethings. Like a first trimester pregnant young mom who recently asked me about what precautions she should be taking with regards to mosquitos, or the worried parents who are asking about whether they should go on international travel trips and risk a Zika infection, or a family with a child who has severe neurologic problems who asked me was she responsible for her child's problems by taking a vacation to the Caribbean when she was 18 weeks pregnant. In other words, there is fever pitch of concern about Zika, so in today's podcast, I thought it is time for you to learn what we know to date about this emerging disease. Musical Introduction Essential Knowledge About Zika 1.Here are the salient points you need to know: Zika is a serious concern during pregnancy. That fact has been established. The CDC has confirmed a strong association of Zika infection during pregnancy and microcephaly as well as other birth brain defects. Zika has the potential to be a very serious health problem for the unborn but not so much for older individuals. It is actually a mild disease in children and adults. Kate Russell is a journalist and reporter who, by her own admission, spends far too much time online. For the past decade she has dedicated her life to staying on top of online developments, commenting on the Internet, social media and mobile apps for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and a frightening number of print and online publications. In that time she has seen a lot of things done well - but less widely reported are the disasters she's witnessed. From monumental social media screw-ups (like the Facebook party invitation that ended in a full-scale riot), to the truth behind how much information you're giving to 'The Man'. This revealing talk is not for the faint-hearted and might make you think twice about how well you know the Internet.

A long cut of Kate Russell's piece about freedom of expression online and Azerbaijan.
Addiction is often the result of pain in our early years of life. Whether it’s passed down through genetics or an attempt to escape the pain, many addicts can point to a hard childhood as the source of their addiction. This is why it’s so important to recognize our family patterns and root out the disease of addiction while we still can. Today’s guest, Kate Russell, grew up in just such an unhealthy environment. She was physically abused as a child and was raised by an alcoholic mother. However, she now holds amazing compassion as a result of having worked through her trauma and eventual addiction. Kate is now the author of Down The Rabbit Hole , a memoir of abuse, addiction, and recovery. Getting to read her book, hear her story, and then talk to her on the other side of it all was amazing. Kate inspired me and I think she will do the same for all of you. Tune in to hear all about her book and how she not only endured but grew through her difficult life experiences. *In this episode, you will hear:* * The “God voice” that helped Kate get through the abuse she endured in her childhood. * The way abuse got so deeply embedded into her that she began to abuse her sister. * When she first began to see the parallel between her, her mom, and addiction. * Where the term “rabbit hole” in the title of her book came from. * How she became addicted to marijuana and alcohol. * The hole that’s left in our hearts when we heal from an addiction. * Kate’s journey towards sobriety. * How recovery looks different than she expected. * How she has developed such compassion for herself and her parents. * Why it’s so important to feel all of your feelings and let yourself cry sometimes. *Key Quotes:* [04:38] - “That’s really what the book ended up being about, for me, was the mind... it’s just how our minds work. Not just addicts, but just how the mind works.” [16:17] - “So ‘Down a Rabbit Hole’ refers to falling down into triggered thinking. So triggered thinking is when we revert back into a helpless childhood, that helplessness we felt in our childhood.” [20:28] - “The drugs... aren’t very successful at covering up that that deeper level of pain or loneliness or depression or whatever it is. And then you start to realize, ‘Oh, wait, this isn't quite working anymore.’” [23:06] - “I was always reaching out for help but wasn’t always met with the results I would have hoped.” [26:25] - “That’s what I think recovery is. It’s just like slowly unpeeling the onion.” [28:19] “When I got sober, there's a pink cloud, if you will call it… life is… different, but everything’s the same. I had the same job, same apartment, same car, but I was sober… everything was new and different.” [30:01] - “The addictive mind is fear: a fear to change. It's fear. You are set in your ways.” [32:28] - “It's always when you get to the other side, you always look back and go, ‘It wasn't that bad.’ Or, ‘You know what, it was hard at times. It was. But I got through it. And if I can get through it, so can you.’” *Subscribe and Review* Have you subscribed to our podcast? We’d love for you to subscribe if you haven’t yet.
