In this podcast episode, Larry Ostola talks to Ted Barris about his book The Battle of the Atlantic: Gauntlet of Victory published by HarperCollins in 2022. In Battle of the Atlantic, Ted Barris provides a well-researched account of Canada's longest continuous military engagement during the Second World War. The years 2019 to 2025 mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic - the war's most critical and dramatic battle of attrition. For five and a half years, German surface warships and submarines attempted to destroy Allied trans-Atlantic convoys, most of which were escorted by Royal Canadian destroyers and corvettes, as well as aircraft of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Throwing deadly U-boat “wolf packs” in the paths of the convoys, the German Kriegsmarine almost succeeded in cutting off this vital lifeline to a beleaguered Great Britain. During the desperate days and nights of the Battle of the Atlantic, the Royal Canadian Navy grew to 400 fighting ships and over 100,000 men and women in uniform; by V-E Day in 1945, it had become the fourth largest navy in the world. While Canadians think of the Great War battle of Vimy Ridge as the country's coming of age, it was the Battle of the Atlantic that proved Canada's gauntlet to victory and a nation-building milestone. Ted Barris is an award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster. His writing has regularly appeared in the national press as well as a wide variety of magazines. He's also worked as a host and contributor for CBC Radio, PBS, and TV Ontario. Barris is the author of 20 best-selling nonfiction books and is a member of the Order of Canada. Prophecy Radio episode #71 celebrates Percabeth in honor of Valentine's Day, and we can't wait to talk about how naturally their relationship evolved over the course of all five Percy Jackson and the Olympians books. It once again makes us appreciate how long it's taken to get a faithful adaptation of this book. Read Riordan posted a belated Valentine's Day gift guide from some overlooked demigods. While Rachel Elizabeth Dare isn't a demigod, her answer was probably the best out of all of them. There was also a cute little interview between Rick Riordan and Stacey Lee, and we even found out the name of the Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies sequel! Daniel José Older's shop is now open, which means you can get signed copies of his stuff! Jason Gray Stanford has confirmed he'll be in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 as Maron the satyr. Percabeth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) (00:10:55) Valentine's Day seemed like the perfect excuse to talk about Percabeth—especially because we just finished the first series! Let's talk about where they started out in Lightning Thief. It was kind of nice they were strangers and then became friends because of their quest. That Athena vs. Poseidon rivalry is REAL. Grover is the common denominator between these two. That, and being a demigod. That first Seaweed Brain is truly something special. Next up is Sea of Monsters, and things are TENSE. That being said, Annabeth really opens up in this book, though that was sort of out of her control. What's a little kiss on the cheek amongst friends? Titan's Curse is where the feelings start coming hard and fast. The idea of Annabeth becoming a Hunter of Artemis is…not ideal. We hope there's lots of Leah in this season of the show. Aphrodite definitely helps Percy realize his feelings are not just platonic. In Battle of the Labyrinth we get a real kiss! Unfortunately, confusion over Luke, Rachel, and Calypso means these two aren't really on the same page. This extends to The Last Olympian, where they're separated for a good chunk of the book. But that doesn't mean Annabeth wouldn't sacrifice her life for Percy! And what does Percy do in return? Decline immortality, of course. That underwater kiss means these two are definitely together! Was this a fitting conclusion to their relationship? Thank goodness we'll get more in the Heroes of Olympus series. We've both got some favorite moments we want to talk about in depth. And a couple favorite lines that are super special, too. We'll have to do this again when we finish the Heroes of Olympus series. “Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes” (00:57:16) We still can't get over how perfect it was that we picked “The Staff of Hermes” to read this week. Percy and Annabeth have been together for one month now! Kristen really felt for Percy in this opening scene. HERNIAS ARE US. Wait, no. That's not right. Karen can appreciate the Mortal Kombat reference, even if it wasn't spelled correctly. Poor George and Martha! This story confirms Luke had feelings for Annabeth, which we're just gonna gloss over. More interestingly, it seems like all has NOT been forgiven between Annabeth and Hermes. It sounds like Janus is still messing up network television. Percy agrees to a deal with Hermes, and they have to stop using Annabeth's shield for a cheese platter. Cacus' hideout was, like, super disgusting. That said, we actually kind of liked him? He has that entrepreneurial spirit! The staff being stolen is kind of a big deal, and this story has a lot more impact on the canon of the series than “The Singer of Apollo” did. Annabeth's shield gets destroyed here, which explains why we don't remember it from the rest of the series! Percy's “solution” to their problem wasn't great. LASER MODE is pretty cool, albeit dangerous. Don't try this at home, kids. HER NAME IS ANNABETH AND SHE'S ONE OF A KIND. With Cacus defeated, Percy and Annabeth get to go on a lovely date for their one-month anniversary. Feedback (01:22:00) JustAPositiveGuy has a great headcanon for Percabeth. Krose reminds us how many great moments for Annabeth and Percy there will be in Heroes of Olympus. Die Geschichte eines Spiels, einer Serie, eines Films oder eines Buchs ist immer ein sehr sensibles Thema in der Fangemeinschaft. Manchmal gefällt einem jedes Detail und manchmal fragt man sich, ob die Schreiber einen schlechten Tag hatten. Es kann jedoch auch einfach sein, dass mal anders gedacht wurde oder die Ansicht der Zuschauer sich von der der Autoren unterscheidet. Natürlich ist es oft auch eine Geschmackssache. Mit Battle for Azeroth hat es das Narrative-Team von Blizzard aber nicht leicht. Denn Kritik gibt es von allen Seiten. Es ist nicht so, als würde niemandem die erzählte Geschichte gefallen, aber es gibt mehr als genug negative Stimmen. Genau darum geht es in der heutigen Ausgabe vom Tavern Talk aber nicht. Denn wie bereits geschrieben, der Inhalt einer Geschichte ist Geschmackssache und zu kritisieren, dass es wieder einen Fraktionskrieg gibt, man die Entwicklung von Sylvanas nicht mag oder sonst was, macht nicht viel Sinn. Anders ist es jedoch bei dem Aufbau oder der Struktur der Story. In Battle for Azeroth gibt es unglaublich viele verschiedene Charaktere und Storyfäden, die man versucht miteinander zu verbinden. Einige eher im Hintergrund, andere stehe im direkten Fokus. Doch könnte es sein, dass das alles etwas zu viel ist? Weniger ist bekanntlich manchmal mehr!

Oh mein Gott, ein seltener Gegner! Oh wow, eine Schatztruhe! Wann habt ihr euch das zum letzten Mal sagen gehört? In Battle for Azeroth? In Legion? In Warlords of Draenor? Sicherlich nicht, denn seit geraumer Zeit findet man die damals noch wirklich seltenen Vorkommnisse an jeder Ecke! Viele umherreisende Abenteurer ignorieren sie einfach komplett, da es kaum einen Nutzen hat, diese zu besiegen oder zu öffnen. Ziemlich schade, denn vor langer Zeit war es immer ein tolles Ereignis, wenn man einen besonderen Gegner oder eine schicke Truhe in der Welt fand.  Genau das haben auch die Entwickler gemerkt und deshalb einfach immer mehr und mehr Rares sowie Schatztruhe eingefügt. Schließlich hat es den Spielern Spaß gemacht diese zu finden. Dass es aber keine Besonderheit mehr ist, wenn sie überall herumstehen, da haben sie wohl nicht dran gedacht. The United National Anti-War Coalition recently held its annual national conference at the People’s Forum, in New York City. Black Agenda Report senior columnist Margaret Kimberley was one of the speakers. Mass Black Incarceration has been the norm in the United States, ever since the abolition of slavery, and Black women have always been in the forefront of prison reform. Nikki Brown is a professor of history at the University of New Orleans. She authored an article in the Journal of African American History, titled “Keeping Black Motherhood Out of Prison: Prison Reform and Woman-Saving in the Progressive Era.” We asked Professor Brown why so many prison reformers belonged to socially conservative Black womens’ clubs. The last of the surviving Move 9 members has been released from prison. Mumia Abu Jamal, the nation’s best known political prisoner, filed this report for Prison Radio.  Before there was a movement against the Vietnam War, there was a movement against US militarism and support for white colonial regimes. Charisse Burden Stelly is a Professor of Africana Studies and Political Science at Carleton College. She wrote an article for the Dubois Review, titled “In Battle for Peace During Scoundrel Time: W. E. B. Du Bois and United States Repression of Radical Black Peace Activism.” We asked Professor Stelly, Who were the scoundrels during “Scoundrel Time?”

Bobelian's account, relying upon a wealth of archival materials, including primary sources from presidential libraries, Senate hearings, and interviews, recreates the political world of Washington, D.C. in the 1960s, during the height of the Warren Court's influence. Bobelian assesses the motives for various actors, such as segregationist Strom Thurmond, moderate Robert Griffin, and liberals Abe Fortas and Earl Warren, in their roles in the nomination process. He makes the argument that the politicization of the nomination process did not begin with Robert Bork's nomination in 1987, but truly began with the nomination of Fortas. Bobelian also considers the political and popular responses to the then-novel consistently activist Warren Court and how the Fortas nomination and the opposition to it were motivated by combinations of jurisprudential ideology, institutional prerogatives, and the dynamics of personal relationships. Hey, either way it’s finally time! Star Trek Picard premiers on CBS: All Access this week. Whether you’ve already seen the series pilot or not, we’ve got a couple of fun stories from Picard’s final marketing push.  For starters, CBS arranged a two day takeover of London’s Picadilly Circus Underground station. Star Trek branding adorned the tiled roundels in the station’s ticket hall, declaring it to be “PICARDilly Circus”. Signs and train line maps throughout the station carried the theme as well.  If you closed your eyes, you could perhaps imagine yourself in a Federation transportation hub as the PA announced “Please take care when using stairs, escalators or transporters.” Next stop - Earth Space Dock? Our next Picard marketing tidbit comes courtesy of a Variety interview with the cast and crew at the show’s premiere event in Hollywood. When asked which Trek character each of them would most like to share drinks with, the answers were gracious, touching, and funny in turn. Sir Patrick Stewart joked, “Your question suggests that that hasn’t happened yet.” before adding “There are a lot of new characters with me now. And they are, without exception, delightful people. So a glass or two of something pleasant with any of them would be a treat.” Rod Roddenberry touchingly replied, “My dad. I know that’s not what you were asking, but that’s who I’d most like to hang out with.” While several other cast and crew all agreed that Picard himself was their man of choice, new star Isa Briones offered an amusing reply, “I shouldn’t answer that because I’m not 21 for a few days! Hypothetically, Guinan, because she would get me drunk in the right way!” And our last Picard marketing bit comes courtesy of Sir Patrick’s appearance on the BBC talk show The Graham Norton Show. The host asked Stewart if, given TNG’s heavy syndication, he ever found himself unintentionally drawn into watching the show.  While Sir Patrick declared that he doesn’t seek out the show, he shared a funny story about one night staying in a hotel. While channel surfing, Stewart came across an episode of The Next Generation.  After watching for a few minutes, he found himself hooked. It was at this point that his room service order was brought into the room, and the hotel staff person looked at him, looked at the television, and went away. Stewart told Norton, “I thought, he’s going to go away and tell the entire kitchen “It’s the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. This guy is upstairs, alone, having room service,  watching himself on TV!” Discovery Season Three and Lower Decks Nearing Release? There’s still no official word from CBS on the release schedule for the rest of its forthcoming Star Trek shows.  However, a couple of Tweets were dropped this past week that give us hints that we may not have long to wait. First, back on January 14th, TrekCore.com’s twitter account posted a very brief chat with Executive Producer Heather Kadin. Asked if Discovery’s new season would be coming on the heels of Picard, Kadin had a surprising answer. She said, “It’s not up to me. CBS All Access schedules it. I’ll tell you that, come May, a lot of things will be ready. “Lower Decks” will be ready. “Discovery” Season 3 will be ready.” She added her expectation that the shows would be scheduled to ensure a steady flow of content. She also declared, “I can’t wait for people to see “Lower Decks”“ Just a few days later, on the 17th, another tantalizing Tweet appeared. Michelle Paradise, Discovery Season 3’s writer, tweeted a photo of one line of script boldly declaring “End of Season Three”. So with the writing on the show complete, and the Picard Executive Producer expecting the shows to be ready by May, maybe we won’t be waiting long after Picard’s finale for the next show. 25th Anniversary of Voyager 25 years ago, Captain Janeway and the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager began their adventures in the Delta Quadrant. In honor of the special day, many of Voyager’s cast members took to Twitter to celebrate. The Captain herself posted a short video captioned “Thought I’d dust off my uniform (pips, badge & boots) in celebration of the 25th anniversary.” In the video, to the stirring tune of Voyager’s theme music, Kate Mulgrew has arranged her Starfleet uniform and a Voyager script atop a Voyager folding director’s chair. There will be two new crafting options for the Omega particles this year, you will now be able to craft mark OR rarity variations of the Omega upgrades. The party pooper this year will feature the greatest hits of past poppers. The anniversary pack is adding several new emotes including a Disco Dance, Tea - Earl Grey, Evil Plans, Organian Greetings, and Ta-dah! And of course you’ll be able to earn yourself a shiny new Tier 6 ship, The Khitomer Alliance Battlecruiser. Klingon/Federation Hybrid Ship for the 10th Anniversary An amalgamation of design aesthetics from both the Klingon Defence Force and Starfleet, this formidable ship comes with the Aligned Antiproton Shielding Universal Console. Which when activated gives a temporary boost to Energy Weapon Haste, Shield Regeneration, and Shield Capacity that increases the more damage your shields take. Re-activating the ability afterwards will deal antiproton damage to each nearby enemy. Reaching level 5 in the Alliance Battlecruiser will unlock the Automated Shield Alignment Starship Trait. Slotting this trait will give a bonus to damage based on what percentage of your shields is missing. Defeating an enemy will restore a substantial portion of your shields. New Task Force Operation Launching with 10th Anniversary The task force operation, To Hell with Honor, was announced last week and featured on a recent Ten Forward Weekly live stream. The TFO has Captains taking the fight to J’Ula in a space versus ground forces battle on a barren moon. As John Hegner noted during the live stream, there are a couple of different strategies players can take when approaching the TFO. Stage one pits Captains against ground turrets while they make their way to J’Ula’s headquarters. During stage two, Captains will battle against both J’Ula’s forces and Elachi ground walkers. Any turrets not destroyed during stage one will help you fight the Elachi. There is a stage three, but not wanting to spoil anything, we’ll let listeners discover that for themselves. Two Previous TFOs Return with 10th Anniversary Update The 10th Anniversary update will also bring us two previous TFOs into regular rotation. Battle at the Binary Stars and the Mycelial Realm return to join the permanent list of regularly available TFOs. In Battle at the Binary Stars you’ll take on the role of a Discovery era starship involved with the famous battle we first saw in the premiere episode of Star Trek Discovery. Not only is this a beautiful map and exciting battle, but you’ll get to see cutscene recreated in game as they played out in Discovery. Then enter the Mycelial Realm in a ground TFO where you’ll team up with Tardigrade to fight Elachi and try to hinder J’Ula’s efforts. Event Campaign Continues and Mudd’s Market Launches on Console Console Captain’s can continue their campaign progress towards a free Tier Six ship coupon by playing in the Voth Breach event. Players have the choice of either playing the Into the Breach featured Task Force Operation or in any of the new re-imagined space patrols that were previously released on PC. Completing the daily progress with the TFO or two of the patrols 14 times will also earn you the Voth power Subcore console along with the usual Featured TFO rewards. The USS Ross Galaxy Variant Revealed on Clear Skies Show On this week’s episode of “Clear Skies,” the Star Trek Adventures RPG from the creative minds behind “Shield of Tomorrow,” the crew of the USS Ross finally set out on their adventure and gave us our first look at the starship. The title sequence, put together by none other than ZEFilms, showcases the Galaxy variant which will be available as an in game variant for exploration cruisers. WEEKLY TOP TIP With the Voth Breach arriving on Console as the featured TFO, we want to give you a couple of tips for completing it hastily. The first stage of the TFO is pretty straight forward, literally. You and your teammates fly at full impulse down the outside spine of the ship firing all around. Very much like the Death Star trench run in Star Wars. Occasionally you’ll slow down to take out some turrets and then in the featured version you’ll head straight down into the belly of the ship to take on the Subpower Cores. Here’s where the first tip comes in. Only one of the three chambers will have the correct subpower core. The other two will have a question mark in the name. Don’t attack these ones, heal yourself up and go to another chamber. Remember that a chamber will not have the correct subpower core twice in a row. After your team explodes the Subpower Core, head into the next chamber and start taking down the primary power core. This one has a rotating shield. You can either fly around the core keeping your ship broadsiding the exposed space between the shielding, or sit tight and buff up your ship when the shield blocks your firing arcs. It’s up to you. But make sure you get your pacing down or you’ll be wasting your buffed attacked on an immune shield. Battle at the Binary Stars and the Mycelial Realm return to join the permanent list of regularly available TFOs. In Battle at the Binary Stars you'll take on the role of a Discovery era starship involved with the famous battle we first saw in the premiere episode of Star Trek Discovery. Not only is this a beautiful map and exciting battle, but you'll get to see cutscene recreated in game as they played out in Discovery. Then enter the Mycelial Realm in a ground TFO where you'll team up with Tardigrade to fight Elachi and try to hinder J'Ula's efforts. Event Campaign Continues and Mudd's Market Launches on Console Console Captain's can continue their campaign progress towards a free Tier Six ship coupon by playing in the Voth Breach event. Players have the choice of either playing the Into the Breach featured Task Force Operation or in any of the new re-imagined space patrols that were previously released on PC. Completing the daily progress with the TFO or two of the patrols 14 times will also earn you the Voth power Subcore console along with the usual Featured TFO rewards. This even runs now until January 27th. The USS Ross Galaxy Variant Revealed on Clear Skies Show On this week's episode of “Clear Skies,” the Star Trek Adventures RPG from the creative minds behind “Shield of Tomorrow,” the crew of the USS Ross finally set out on their adventure and gave us our first look at the starship. The title sequence, put together by none other than ZEFilms, showcases the Galaxy variant which will be available as an in game variant for exploration cruisers. WEEKLY TOP TIP With the Voth Breach arriving on Console as the featured TFO, we want to give you a couple of tips for completing it hastily. The first stage of the TFO is pretty straight forward, literally. You and your teammates fly at full impulse down the outside spine of the ship firing all around. Very much like the Death Star trench run in Star Wars. Occasionally you'll slow down to take out some turrets and then in the featured version you'll head straight down into the belly of the ship to take on the Subpower Cores. Here's where the first tip comes in. Only one of the three chambers will have the correct subpower core. The other two will have a question mark in the name. Don't attack these ones, heal yourself up and go to another chamber. Remember that a chamber will not have the correct subpower core twice in a row. After your team explodes the Subpower Core, head into the next chamber and start taking down the primary power core. This one has a rotating shield. You can either fly around the core keeping your ship broadsiding the exposed space between the shielding, or sit tight and buff up your ship when the shield blocks your firing arcs. It's up to you. But make sure you get your pacing down or you'll be wasting your buffed attacked on an immune shield. Starting on the same day as the Picard premiere Timelines starts a new campaign that offers Irumodic Syndrome Picard and EV Suit Seven of Nine as rewards.  Starting the same day is Timelines' newest event titled, Right on Q. The competitive aspect and friends you make along the way. Early Challenge Limited is Chester's weak point. Talking to those who are better has been Chester's best way to improve. Other than jamming a bunch of Limited games. Level Up Moment Shifting to Magic Online and primarily playing there. This lead to his first PTQ win in 2011. Proudest Magic Moment Making Top 8 at Grand Prix Sydney 2015. Best Format Constructed. Chester likes seeing your win rate go up as you practice with a certain deck (in Modern or Standard). When you're first learning a format, pick a deck and stick with it. After you have a feel for the format you can switch decks. How to Choose a Standard Deck Knowing your own play style is key to picking a deck. By playing Magic with different decks and against different decks you will learn what you like.  Build the popular version of that deck and then tweak it as you continue playing. Biggest Mistake Players Make Keeping really loose keeps is a big mistake players are making. Especially with the new mulligan rule players should be keeping a lot fewer hands than they are. You have to be familiar with your deck and the match up to make the optimal keep or mulligan decision. Don't show up unprepared. Take snacks and water and get sleep. Card Evaluation Tips Compare new cards to similar cards in older formats, then consider how good that card was in the old format and use it as a baseline for how good the new card is. Sealed & Draft Tips Sealed: Sort cards by color and then take out the unplayables. Next see which colors are playable by identifying if your pool can support a certain archetype. In Battle for Zendikar you want a fast or bomb-centric deck. Removal is key in any Limited format. Drafting: Look at content online before you dive in to a format. By having an idea of what the archetypes in a format are ahead of time you'll be better prepared to draft than if you just showed up and sat down. Read articles and watch videos. How to Effectively Play Test Drafting two or three times a day is how Chester prepares for a Limited Grand Prix. Then he will talk about his decisions with others. For a Constructed Grand Prix he will get in reps with his deck so he can identify lines of play and become more familiar with his deck. Improvement Suggestions The red deck of any given format is usually pretty good. Starting with that deck is a great place to start.
