Send us a textIn this interview with Amanda Harrison we talk about her memoir, Solo2Darwin: In the Footsteps of Amy Johnson, in which she recounts her attempt to fly solo from England to Australia in her vintage open cockpit Tiger Moth. We also talk about the other themes shared in her book about grieving the loss of her father, her breast cancer journey, and the experience of navigating life with dyslexia. I mention Elizabeth Wein's historical fiction novels written for dyslexic and reluctant readers ages 13+ - The titles are: The Last Hawk, White Eagle, and Firebird.Did you know you can support your local independent bookshop and me by shopping through my Bookshop.org affiliate links on my website? Join Peter Windsor as he talks at length with Peter Wright, the former BRM and Lotus engineer who, in a career that began in the late 1960s, not only pioneered ground effect with Colin Chapman but who also subsequently worked for the FIA on such safety developments as the survival cell, the halo, the HANS collar, circuit barriers and composite helmet design. Along the way, Peter also found time to create his own self-sustaining glider, to fly a Tiger Moth and to restore a Bugatti T51. Peter Wright spoke to Peter Windsor from his home in Presteigne, on the Welsh-English border, just before Christmas. This uncut recording of the conversation revolves around the recent publication of Peter's autobiography ( "How Did I Get Here?", which can be ordered via email from www.howdidigethere.co.uk) and includes several sections not featured in our YouTube video. Michael ‘Mike' Howlett's talks about his experience of flying successive generations of aircraft during his career as a pilot spanning over 70 years. Having learnt to fly on a Tiger Moth bi-plane, he flew first-generation jet fighters (the Meteor and Vampire), then the first generation long-haul, land-based piston-engine airliners in the form of the Boeing Stratocruiser. This was followed by flying the first of the long-range, swept-wing jets, the Boeing 707, and then the first of the ultra-large passenger aircraft, the Boeing 747 ‘Jumbo'. These aircraft not only ushered in different eras of air travel with a new level of passenger experience, they posed new challenges for their operators and aircrew. Mike provides fascinating insights into these changes. Mike Howlett was interviewed by Sir George Cox as part of the Royal Aeronautical Society/National Aerospace Library's oral history project ‘If I only didn't do it that way…….” Capturing history from the horse's mouth to inspire today's aeronautical professionals. The recording was edited by edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS. Amanda Harrison attempted to recreate the first solo flight by a woman from England to Australia in 1930. That original journey was undertaken by the pioneering Amy Johnson in a Gipsy Moth, so Harrison, attempting to be as true to the challenge as possible, undertook hers in a 1942 Tiger Moth. Unfortunately, she had to abandon her mission due to airspace restrictions in 2019, but she did have some adventures on the way. In this special podcast, Harrison talks to host Adam Thorn about her incredible flight – and what's next.
Amanda Harrison has always wanted to recreate the footsteps of Amy Johnson, flying solo in a Tiger Moth from the UK to Darwin, Australia in just 20 Days. Listen in as she tells us the tale of the attempt and how things unfolded. From Dracula's Castle to Mediterranean wonders! Although a professional pilot, Amanda is also dyslexic, an additional challenge in planning and executing this journey. National service has become part of the mythology of a braver, stronger Britain, where young men did their duty for their country and ended up having a damn good time doing it. But did they? What did people really think of National Service — and why were so many of them utterly relieved when it came to an end? Ros Taylor talks to Richard Vinen, a historian at King's College London and author of National Service: A Generation in Uniform, and Martin Stone, who joined the RAF in 1950. • “I did have one near death mistake there… I thought that's it, I've probably had it.” – Martin Stone • “The category of people who are keenest on it at the beginning are public schoolboys. By the end of the 1950s they're deferring.” – Richard Vinen • “The best week I ever had there was flying sea cadets round in a Tiger Moth, doing some aerobatics for them. A Tiger Moth is easy to fly, but difficult to fly well.” – Martin Stone • “It's balls.” – Richard Vinen on the notion that men got to meet others from different social classes. In this interview with Leona Cobham, granddaughter of pioneering pilot and aviation advocate, Sir Alan Cobham, we talk about her wonderful middle grade book, Flying Circus Takes to the Skies, which features the adventures of four anthropomorphic vintage aircraft: Spiff, the Spitfire; Vul, the Vulcan; Tom, the Tomcat; and Woody, the Tiger Moth. Leona was inspired to write the book by her experience working with children and her concern over boys becoming ever-more reluctant readers. She created these characters in the hopes that boys would get excited about both reading and aviation history. Her next installment of Airplane Adventures will include a female Nighthawk. The story is well-complemented by line drawings from aviation artist Timothy O'Brien. https://www.timobrienart.co.uk/Leona's book is very thoughtfully available in two English versions - one with British spellings, and one with American, so be sure to select the one appropriate for your young reader. Philip Hogge first learned to fly in 1958 by completing a gliding course with the Air Cadets. He then obtained an RAF Flying Scholarship while still at school and learned to fly a Tiger Moth, gaining his Private Pilot's Licence. In 1962 he joined BOAC where he flew the Britannia 312 (the last propeller service across the Atlantic), then Brooklands built VC10s, Boeing 707s and eventually 747s. He was Flight Training Manager on 707s and then 747s, before becoming Chief Pilot on 747s, and finally GM Flight Operational Services in British Airways' flight operations department. Airline flying in the 1960s was still an era of glamour, adventure and excitement in what Phil fondly recalls as the Golden Age of Flying. He has written two volumes of short stories in which he recalls, in fictional form, the challenges and enjoyment he and his colleagues shared in those days.

It's the final MavGeeks for this season and there's a definite "End of summer camp" vibe going on. Alex is taking selfies, crying into a hankie and promising to keep in touch with everyone, while Gini is handing out homemade wristbands to make sure we are all MavGeeks friends forever. "The ideal candidate is someone who's got some Tiger Moth time or Stearman. Those two airplanes are exceptional initial experience trainers because they tend to amplify your faults without killing you."Dave Hadfield is the Chief Pilot at Vintage Wings of Canada, home of the Michael Potter Collection. Dave grew up around airplanes, and after a career with Air Canada he found himself in the right spot, with the right experience, to start flying warbirds. We discuss what it's like to fly the Spitfire, Hurricane, Kittyhawk, and Mustang, and the quirky characteristics of the Westland Lysander - one of only three left flying in the World. The number of horses that die at Melbourne Cup is "disproportionate" compared to other races, the NZ Herald's racing editor says.Twilight Payment won the prestigious race today, but it was marred by a horse — 2019 Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck — breaking down early in the race and having to be euthanized. Anthony Van Dyck raced 19 times in five countries and collected five other wins to go alongside his English Derby triumph.“It is with sadness that we confirm that Anthony Van Dyck had to be humanely euthanized after sustaining a fractured fetlock,” Racing Victoria spokesman Jamie Stier said. “The horse received immediate veterinary care, however he was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained.“Our sympathies are extended to the owners of Anthony Van Dyck, trainer Aidan O'Brien and all his staff who cared for the horse and are greatly saddened by their loss.”NZ Herald racing editor Mick Guerin told D'Arcy Waldegrave that the figure is at odds with other races, and there is no clear reason why so many horses die at Melbourne Cup."It's been quite remarkab LISTEN ABOVE

Any of Brien Wygle’s achievements would be enough for most of us to dine-out on for the rest of our lives. A World War 2 pilot who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy. A man who flew Hump missions in a vulnerable C-47s and who saw three of his comrades go down in a single day. A pilot who volunteered to fly bombing missions for the fledgling Israeli Air Force, who taught Howard Hughes to fly jet aircraft and who became a notable test pilot and yet was one of the most unassuming people you would want to meet. Much of Brien's love of flying came from magazines and building model aircraft. As a young man Brien saw a formation of Hurricanes which lit the flame of his desire to become a pilot. Brien's flying training started in the Tiger Moth. Brien's first operational type was the Douglas Dakota. Brien spend much time in the Far East flying dangerous mump missions and supply drops to the Chindits. Back in Canada, Brien got some rare jet time on the De Havilland Vampire. Joining Boeing, Brein started work flying the B47. Famously, Brien was the project test pilot for the Boeing 737. Posing with Lew Wallick after a successful maiden flight of the B737. Brien was also part of the crew that flew the maiden flight of the B747. Brien Wygle passed away on the 15th of September 2929. In this episode, Shae speaks with the wonderful Captain Amanda Harrison a fellow dyslexic about the ups and downs of living with dyslexia and facing our fears. Amanda Harrison is an exceptional woman, an experienced pilot with a demonstrated history of working in the aviation industry. Skilled in Flight Planning, Air Charter, Aviation, Adventure Pilot and live life to full. In May 2019, Amanda paid tribute to Amy Johnson, a true aviation hero, by following in her footsteps and flying solo from London, UK to Darwin, Australia in just 19 days in my vintage Tiger Moth. It was her first major adventure since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 which included treatment, surgeries and most importantly healing in 2018. Find out more about Amanda and her flying adventures and her work on Dyslexic-Ability.
The Cricket Podcast meet David Gower on this week's show. David, as you will know, played over 100 Tests for England, scored over 11,000 international runs, captained England (twice) and has gone on to be one of cricket's leading broadcasters! We speak to him about his lifetime spent playing and commentating on the game. In this wide ranging interview, we touch on topics which include drinking with Ian Botham, what it was like to play against the West Indies in the 1980s and, of course, the infamous Tiger Moth incident. Remember to follow us on Twitter: @thecricketpod and catch up on our other interviews via our website: thecricketpod.com.
This week’s edition of Top Landing Gear goes back in time 90 years to explore the story of one of the great aviation pioneers. Join Rob, Roy, James and Jez for a look at the incredible Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo, and we mean solo, to Australia. We find out about her aircraft the tiny Gipsy Moth, how she got into aviation and the remarkable tale of her journey from Croydon, South London to Darwin, Northern Australia. Discover the Amy Wave and why Roy has one, what Amy did during the war and the story of her mysterious demise.Don’t forget our regular Ask James feature where we test if Jim really does know what he’s talking about. And of course the TLG quiz, in which the team are tested on this week’s subject and in which one team member smashes the others after a totally unfair disqualification in the last episode! Then of course there is our interview, this week with the inspirational Amanda J Harrison and her daring attempt to recreate Amy Johnson’s record in her own Tiger Moth. If you listen to just two things this month, make sure its Top Landing Gear and the Full Flaps interview with Amanda.Episode two out 2nd June and the Full Flaps interview out 9th June. Outdoor recreation will be a healer for all of us post pandemic and through the recovery of the recession. Taxa Outdoors is a revered client partner of Verde Brand Communications, the presenting sponsor of the Channel Mastery podcast, and I had the honor of interviewing CEO and founder of Taxa Outdoors, Garrett Finney, on the podcast today. So what is Taxa Outdoors and why do they make mobile human habitats built for adventuring? And why do they have only four products named after insects? The Mantis, Cricket, Tiger Moth and Wooly Bear are the four models available today. Does Taxa Outdoors make a recreational vehicle (RV) or an outdoor gear hauler? Yes. Is it a people transporting mechanism to the natural environment? Yes. Is it more mobile habitat designed to be a functional and fun basecamp than box-like RV? Yes! Taxa Outdoors is enjoying a healthy surge of sales and community growth through the pandemic and now, the recession. These American-made, artisan campers are not exactly inexpensive, yet they’re selling very well during this time of constriction and consumer confidence. Want to know why? Listen to this conversation. You’ll learn how Garrett was his own target consumer, and how he created what he truly wanted in a mobile, adventure-ready habitat: the promise of freedom and life transformation that you can pull behind a light-duty SUV! Who doesn’t want that in the throes of the pandemic? This episode is all about the business of belief, and the inspiration of one very special visionary entrepreneur. I hope you enjoy it!
This Podcast is the equivalent of a Sunday Roast. Carve the meat, prepare the trimmings, and don’t forget the Apple Pie. David Gower, one of England’s finest left-handers to emerge out of England, takes time out to talk to Dean du Plessis. He talks about the euphoria of regaining the Ashes in 1985 as captain, the disappointing tour of the West Indies in 1986, the joy of retaining the Ashes in 1987 which gave him a second opportunity to captain England, and the disappointment of losing the Ashes in 1989 which lost him the captaincy as well. He vividly relives the Tiger Moth incident in 1991, talks about the joys and blunders of the commentary box, and shares his experience of playing blind cricket- which appealed to Dean du Plessis’s sense of humour, as Dean is totally blind.

Amanda Harrison - Surviving cancer to fly solo across the world in a WW2 biplane Amanda Harrison is a graduate of one of my original 'Screw Work Le'ts Play' Programmes and she's had a dream for 15 years to recreate Amy Johnson's pioneering solo flight from the U.K to Darwin in 1930. When Amanda was treated for Cancer 18 months ago, it gave her the detemination to make this dream actually come true. So now she's on her way on a 9,000 mile journey to Australia, in a 1942 Tiger Moth biplane. When I saw her she was stranded in Vienna for a day after a bird strike damaged her propeller. I jumped at the chance to interview her in the aircraft hanger next to her plane. You can also see the video of Amanda, get a close up look at the Tiger Moth, track Amanda's journey and lend your support. This time, Nora Young looks at the urban agriculture trend. According to a new study, the majority of people doing small scale urban agriculture (eg, rooftop market gardening) in the U.S. generate less than $10,000 in sales. This calls into question the sustainability of the urban ag trend (via City Lab). In a bit of good news, though, Modern Farmer looks at a really cool idea: mobile urban farm stands that sell fresh food near public transit, for people in "food deserts". Cathi Bond continues her love of tiny, perfectly planned spaces with the Tiger Moth, a really cool trailer designed by a former NASA engineer. There's a neat-o video tour!
This week our esteemed guest is none other than Peter Jones of Tiger Moth Tales! Yes, the man who has recently announced that he will be joining Camel on an upcoming Asian tour, opening for Moon Safari in London, and releasing a new project in conjunction with Red Bazar! Peter is a busy man for sure, but I was able to catch up with him and chat about his pop beginnings, his two Tiger Moth Tales albums, how he approaches recording and other topics!(Due to restrictions in certain markets, I did "bookend" the Peter Jones feature with a few other songs, one from an excellent new project called Kiama and a classic from Genesis. So don't be alarmed if you tune in and don't hear Peter right off the bat...you'll hear the interview and some great Tiger Moth tracks soon enough!)As always, send questions, suggestions or comments to progsquatch@gmail.com.
