Lando Norris led from the pole but his win in Madrid fell away when a brief Virtual Safety Car intervention came a few seconds too late for him on lap 15 (of 57): by the time he had completed another lap the race was on again. Charles Leclerc, who didn't stop under the VSC, then led for Ferrari for most of the distance but ultimately it was Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli who scored the eighth win of the year, leading across the line the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and the charging McLaren of Norris. Leclerc finished P4, ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, but Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton was an early retirement with a brake problem. Sir Lewis Hamilton finished only P6 for Ferrari but for the Tifosi at Monza there was still much about which to go crazy: Kimi Antonelli, the boy from Bologna, started his Mercedes from P19, led the race, dropped to P6 in a tyre change - and then regained the lead to win. It was an epic drive in an epic, baking-hot race and it marked the first home win for an Italian driver at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti headed a Ferrari one-two there in 1966. George Russell led for much of the race in the other Mercedes but ultimately finished P2, ahead of a brilliant Max Verstappen, who brought his difficult Red Bull-RBPT Ford home in P3, and the two McLaren-Mercedes of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Lots upon which to focus after the (last) Dutch GP at Zandvoort, as can be seen from the chapter headings below.  The race resulted in a second consecutive victory for McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris.  Mercedes finished two-three ahead of the two Ferraris - but there was plenty of intra-team in-fighting behind those four results...particularly at Ferrari. This podcast features two motor racing legends with very different talents telling their very different stories of how they came to be a part of Colin Chapman's winning team at Indianapolis in 1965.  That was the year Jim Clark stunned the motor racing world not only by becoming the first driver to win at Indy with a rear-engined car (The Lotus 38-Ford V8) - but also by clinching the F1 World Championship two months later.  Allan Moffat - at that stage a young Canadian with dreams of becoming a race driver - worked as a go-fer initially for the Ford Lotus Cortina team in North America and then for the Indy-winning team; Jim Smith, a tough Aussie marine engineer who sailed to England to seek his fortune, found himself building said Lotus Cortinas in Cheshunt, England, after replying to a newspaper ad. A true F1 hero, Denny Hulme dug deep in 1970, when his friend and mentor, Bruce McLaren, lost his life in a Goodwood testing accident. At the time, Denny was in the very early stages of recovery from extensive burns to his hands - mainly to his left hand and forearm but also to his right hand - after surviving a spectacular methanol fire at Indianapolis. Eschewing advice from the medics, Denny then returned to F1 at the French GP, determined to lead the McLaren team forwards despite the loss of Bruce. This audio podcast begins with an ebullient Denny talking after the 1969 Dutch GP, when he fought a close battle with fellow Kiwi, Chris Amon. It then fast-forwards to the paddock of the 1970 French GP at Clermont, where a shattered Denny talks about driving the M14A-Ford into fourth place despite the excruciating pain of holding the steering wheel with his left hand while he changed gear with his right. Niel Allen is without question one of the fastest racing drivers I ever saw. A quiet Australian who did things his own way - first by building a commercial property empire in Sydney, then by racing a succession of stunning race cars prepared by the unmatchable Peter Molloy - Niel by the late 1960s/early 1970s was right up there with the best of the many internationals who raced in Australia at that time. From Elans to Mustangs, to F2 and F5000 McLarens and to brutal, CanAm Elfins, Niel was always decisively fast, impeccably neat and super-competitive. He was intelligent, too - a free spirit in the truest sense of those words. In an interview recorded with Peter in early 2014, Niki Lauda talks about his racing career, his business world and life in general. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli scored a perfectly-judged win at Spa after passing the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc in the closing stages - after making the pass, you could say, that he had been denied at Silverstone. Max Verstappen drove valiantly into P3 for Red Bull, despite a top speed disadvantage and numerous deployment issues - and he might have been P2 had not Leclerc's pit stop been "neutralised" by a brief virtual safety car period. Although F1's 2026 technology looked a bit stretched around the usually-brilliant Silverstone GP circuit, raw human emotions surely abounded. Charles Leclerc is a winner again; Kimi Antonelli was the star who almost made it; and Max Verstappen was the despondent survivor of another big moment after again driving his heart out. With George Russell inheriting P2 after Kimi's late-race demise, the ironies were complete: Sir Lewis Hamilton, who finished P3, at one stage fought hard with Max into Copse, reliving those desperate first-lap moments of 2021; and Charles, as he sprayed the champagne, could think also of 2022, when, as the likely winner at Silverstone, he was left out to dry behind the Safety Car. George Russell may have converted his controversial pole into an Austrian win but it was his Mercedes team-mate, Kimi Antonelli, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who lit up the skies above Spielberg. Max, after pushing George hard in the second half of the race, drove brilliantly into P2; and Kimi, who finished third, closed quickly on both George and Max in the closing laps. It was a stunning day for Red Bull, with Isack Hadjar finishing sixth in the other RB22 and the two Racing Bulls - also powered by the RBPT Ford engine - taking the last two points positions. Ferrari disappointed after starting P2-P3, with Sir Lewis Hamilton finishing P5 and Charles Leclerc P8; and  McLaren-Mercedes could manage only a P4-P7 result. This day in Spain will famously be remembered for the first Ferrari victory scored by Sir Lewis Hamilton.  And it was no gift.  After starting from the front row and splitting the two factory Mercedes in the early race phase, Lewis dramatically chose to make a second tyre change - to medium Pirellis -  at the perfect moment. His mid-race pace on the softer tyres quickly elevated him to the front when the Mercs stopped for their second set of hards - and Lewis always seemed likely to be there at the finish, despite a third pit stop that was looming.  Then fate stepped in - just as it had in Abu Dhabi, 2021, when Nicholas Latiffi's retirement brought out the Safety Car.  On this occasion, Fernando Alonso stopped his slow Aston Martin-Honda at T9; Ferrari missed an immediate pit stop but the Virtual Safety Car conditions were still current as Lewis came round again.  He emerged from the pit lane just in front of George Russell's Mercedes. Although Max Verstappen's qualifying brilliance on Sunday came to nought - came to a dead stop on the grid, just after lights-out - there was still a Monaco GP to be run. There were penalties aplenty; there were Safety Cars; there was a standing re-start; and drivers like Ferrari's Charles Leclerc hit the barriers. Through it all, though, from the front, from the pole and with fastest lap to his credit, Kimi Antonelli, 19, the Mercedes driver, won the Monaco GP.  Sir Lewis Hamilton finished a valiant P2 for Ferrari, ahead of Max's team-mate, Isack Hadjaar, who, despite PU management dramas, was still able to beat the likes of Mercedes' George Russell and McLaren's Oscar Piastri. What a race!  Kimi Antonelli and George Russell fought for the lead until lap 31, when George's Mercedes ground to a halt with a battery issue. Kimi then cruised to his fourth successive victory, leaving the P2 spotlight on Sir Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull-RBPT-Ford); Sir Lewis won that battle. The McLaren-Mercedes? Astoundingly - astonishingly - Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli in Miami won his third successive Grand Prix  from his third, successive pole. Round three of the 2026 F1 World Championship - the all-new F1 championship - resulted in a second consecutive win for Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli.  After making a slow start from the pole, Kimi benefitted from a lap 22 Safety Car deployment to vault past his team-mate, George Russell, McLaren-Mercedes' Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.  He pulled away impressively at the re-start and was thereafter never headed. New regs or not - McLaren-Mercedes in the race (or not): nothing could detract from the enormity of this day in Shanghai - from the first GP win for Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli. The factory Mercedes team - George Russell heading Kimi Antonelli - duly finished one-two in Melbourne, exhibiting more power, more downforce, more grip and more balance than all of their opposition - and capped all of that with perfect strategy calls. Ferrari pushed them hardest, with Charles Leclerc beautifully taking the lead into T1 and exchanging early-lap power surges with George Russell, but weird strategies quickly knocked them back to P3-P4, with Leclerc crossing the line 0.6sec ahead of his team-mate, Sir Lewis Hamilton. A messy day for McLaren-Mercedes began with Oscar Piastri crashing into the barriers on his pre-grid out-lap and Lando Norris finishing only P5. Red Bull-RBPT Ford's Max Verstappen finished P6 after starting near the back of the grid on hard Pirellis, but his team-mate, Isack Hadjar, who had qualified P3, was out of the race early with a PU blow-up.
