Yet, Rommel has other plans and inflicts a series of defeats on the 8th Army, while Malta continues to take a pounding from the Luftwaffe. Rommel finally invades Egypt as the British army command undergoes a massive change. Would the Desert Fox against the odds make it to the Suez?

As the golden African sun set over the vast, unyielding desert, its last rays casting long shadows over the silent, empty landscape, an unprecedented storm was gathering. The winds of war were shifting, carrying with them the acrid smell of smoke and the distant echo of artillery fire, as if foretelling the epic clash that was soon to erupt. This was no ordinary stretch of sand; this was El Alamein, a place where history was about to be written in blood and steel. The stage was set for a battle that would determine the fate of World War II. On one side of the looming conflict stood the confident and resilient British Eighth Army, led by the meticulous and strategic General Bernard Montgomery, a man known for his steely resolve and tactical acumen. On the other, the formidable German-Italian Panzer Army, commanded by the legendary Desert Fox, General Erwin Rommel, who had built a reputation as a ruthless and brilliant tactician, his name becoming synonymous with the harsh and brutal desert warfare of North Africa. They were both masters of their craft, well versed in the art of war, yet with different philosophies and strategies, but driven by the same unwavering determination to achieve victory. As they prepared to engage in a battle that would shape the course of history, the vast desert of El Alamein, so silent and placid on the eve of the conflict, seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the storm. This titanic struggle, the Second Battle of El Alamein, would become a crucial turning point in the war, a touchstone moment that would swing the momentum in favor of the Allies. The battles fought and the sacrifices made there would echo through the ages, their legacy far outlasting the fleeting, brutal moments of conflict. This is the story of El Alamein, of the men who fought, of the strategies that were deployed, and of the ripple effect that this monumental battle had on the broader theater of World War II. The desert is ready to tell its tale; are you ready to listen? --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ww2-stories/support

The desert sun blazed down upon the seemingly endless stretch of sand, casting long, undulating shadows that swayed like the spectres of soldiers past. Here, amid the austere beauty of the Sahara, the stage was set for a confrontation that would prove to be a turning point in the deadliest conflict in human history. This was El Alamein, the setting of a series of battles that would determine the fate of North Africa in World War II, and significantly influence the global outcome of the war. Among the sea of khaki tents and armored vehicles, the palpable tension hung heavy in the air as soldiers from the Axis and Allied powers prepared to square off. Two skilled generals, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, renowned as the 'Desert Fox', and British General Claude Auchinleck, stood at the helms of their respective armies. Their strategic genius, bolstered by the courage and resilience of their troops, would transform the harsh desert landscape into an unforgiving battlefield. This story transports us back to the volatile days of mid-1942, tracing the journey to El Alamein, the visceral moments of the battle, and the far-reaching implications of its outcome. It is a tale of courage and desperation, of tactical brilliance and costly mistakes, of heroic defenses and final victories.  Fasten your seatbelt, for you are about to traverse through the annals of history, revisiting the strategies, the valor, and the human spirit that marked the First Battle of El Alamein. A chapter from World War II that resonates in the corridors of military history and continues to impact our understanding of warfare today. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ww2-stories/support

Narrated by Greg Kinnear. Germany's most famous commander of World War II, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, had one fatal flaw: He always spoke his mind to Adolf Hitler. Rommel would pay for voicing the truth to his Fuhrer with his life. An earlier hero of World War I, Erwin Rommel was many things. A career soldier, a loyal German, one of the most successful generals of World War II on either side of the conflict and above all, a caring father to his son Manfred and loving husband to wife, Lucie. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was also a realist. Highly decorated and one of Hitler's favorite commanders in the early years of World War II, the “Desert Fox” as his British adversaries labeled him, was somewhat of an enigma. Never a member of the Nazi party, Rommel detested the blending of politics and war. He would discover quickly both were always in play in Hitler's Germany. Rommel was somewhat naïve to the ways of Hitler until the latter days of the Afrika Korps defeat in North Africa in 1943. By then, Rommel started to surmise that Germany's fate was sealed. Put in charge of the famed and flawed Atlantic Wall in western Europe in late 1943, Rommel tried his best to prepare France for the coming Allied invasion. In the end, it would not be enough. D-Day's success only reinforced Rommel's belief that Adolf Hitler should sue for peace in the west. Something Hitler found treasonous. Was Rommel in on the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944? If not, why did Germany's Fuhrer force his top general to commit suicide? In a rare interview with the World War II Foundation, Erwin Rommel's late son Manfred lends his personal thoughts to his father's military story, revealing what happens when an honest career soldier confronts a Dictator named Adolf Hitler. Manfred was there and saw it all play out.

In the heart of North Africa, where the scorching desert sun beats relentlessly upon the sands and the jagged terrain promises nothing but hardship, lies a narrow gateway carved by the forces of time and weather: the Kasserine Pass. This seemingly insignificant geographical feature in Tunisia would, in the throes of the Second World War, become the stage for a battle that would not only shape the course of the war in this rugged landscape but also define the future of global warfare. As the winter of 1943 approached, the Allies and Axis powers were entrenched in a ruthless contest for dominance. Europe was under siege, the Pacific was alight with conflict, and North Africa had become a critical chessboard upon which grand strategies were deployed, tested, and contested. The craggy rocks of the Kasserine Pass stood as silent witnesses to the growing tension and impending clash of forces. The primary actors in this theatre of war were as diverse and contrasting as the landscape itself. Commanding the German Afrika Korps was the legendary field marshal, General Erwin Rommel, the "Desert Fox", a tactical genius renowned for his bold strategies and deep understanding of desert warfare. On the Allied side was General Lloyd Fredendall, a leader yet to be tested in the crucible of battle. In the intricate dance of war, both the Allies and Axis powers recognized the strategic importance of North Africa. A gateway to the Mediterranean, a pathway to the oil-rich Middle East, and a platform for launching attacks into the underbelly of Europe, it was a prize too valuable to lose. As the war machine ground relentlessly on, a storm was brewing, its epicenter located at the Kasserine Pass. The coming conflict would be a testing ground for men, machines, and strategies, its impact resonating beyond the confines of the desolate desert landscape, sending shockwaves through the command centers in London, Washington, and Berlin. This is the story of the Battle of Kasserine Pass, a testament to bravery, strategy, loss, and the enduring human spirit in the face of the most adverse circumstances. The sands of time have swept over the echoes of that battle, but its lessons and legacy continue to reverberate through the annals of military history. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ww2-stories/support

Alan Mack was in the thick of every sensitive, harrowing, high-stakes operation in the decade following 9/11. His account of combat from the cockpit of the world's most exceptional special ops aviation unit and of the toll it took on him and his family is forthright, riveting, raw, compelling, and inspirational. Readers will not be able to put Razor 3 down.” -General David H. Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), former Commander of the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, and Coalition Forces in Afghanistan, and former Director of the CIAFinalist, 2022 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Awards The attacks of September 11, 2001, prompted the creation of a robust and deadly special operations force -- Task Force Dagger. Alan C. Mack, Callsign Razor 03, led a team of MH-47E helicopters and armed MH-60s. Their two-fold mission – Personnel Recovery (PR) and Unconventional Warfare (UW) involved flying in terrain and weather previously not thought possible. If that wasn't enough, they pushed the flight envelope of their specially modified Chinooks to the limit and beyond. Mack shares his behind-the-scenes perspective of the Horse Soldier's infill into Afghanistan. He discusses the hunt for Osama Bin Laden at Tora Bora and describes his shootdown during Operation Anaconda. Years later, he chased Bowe Bergdahl, rescued hostages in Iraq, and the U.S. Navy Seal ‘Lone Survivor' from the Kunar Valley. Mack's near-death experiences and frequent deployments not only affected him, but pushed his wife toward prescription opioids. Her developing addiction led to friction as he kept her secret and continued to deploy. He lived by his unit's motto, Night Stalkers Don't Quit! He wouldn't quit on his unit – he couldn't quit on his family. His story of success, tragedy, and ultimate happiness is as old as warfare itself. About the Author CW5 ALAN C. MACK retired from the Army as a Master Aviator. He served over 35 years in the Army, first as an aircraft mechanic then as a pilot. He flew CH-47s in support of Operations Desert Shield and Storm. David is back with the conclusion of the Devil and the history attached to him! Covering other cultures, names, looks, and breakdowns of the info, the Devil gets fleshed out and examined in great detail. We pick back up with various forms of Evil in other cultures through history. Then many of the countless names of this entity are dissected and examined, paying careful attention to the origins of each. The several iterations of looks are discussed after that. And finally the episode concludes with analysis of the research and how it has influenced cultures through the ages. What was the actual purpose of this being? How has it evolved? And what conclusions can you draw from the information? David ends with opinion based on the facts, and encourages you to take a thoughtful examination of them for yourself. It's the finish of one of the biggest episodes in Blurry Photos history, one that hopefully teaches you something new and gives you perspective you never knew you were missing! Connect our private feed with your favourite pod-catcher at https://thevoicesofwar.supercast.com/ ---- My guest today is Amos Fox, who is an officer in the US Army with more than 24 years of service in uniform. Amos has written extensively on war and conflict over the past decade, producing over 60 publications. His work focuses on causal mechanisms to explain patterns in armed conflict. Much of Amos' current writing addresses proxy war, land warfare, the Russo-Ukrainian War, and military thinking. He joined me to discuss some of his views on the state of Western military thinking, particularly our potential over-reliance on the concept of manoeuvre warfare. Some of the topics we covered are: Amos' background in the military and path into academia Influences of Amos' first operational deployment in Iraq Understanding the reality on the ground – when intentions clash Defining manoeuvre warfare and its adoption by Western militaries Lack of pragmatism and reality in Western doctrine – what you need to know Why accurate and relevant doctrine matters for success in war Learning from Liddell Hart and his relevance today Debunking the illusion of manoeuvre in modern battles Avoiding misapplication of past terminology in today's warfare Battle of Mosul – Western usage of sieges examined The Precision Paradox – what it means for modern warfare Expanding doctrine to include Sieges, Urban Warfare, Proxy Warfare and re-imagined combined arms/joint warfare Russian invasion of Ukraine – A case in point for modern warfare The importance of questioning preconceived ideas for effective learning During our chat, I made reference to my conversation with Marc Garlasco, Chief of High Value Targeting at the Pentagon between 1997 and 2003 where he led targeting teams during operations Iraqi Freedom, Desert Fox, and Allied Force. Marc is currently the military advisor at PAX, the largest peace organisation in the Netherlands and works to protect civilians against acts of war, to end armed violence and to build inclusive peace. Some of the topics we covered are: Marc's journey into targeting Developing a picture of Iraq 9/11 and (absence of) link to Iraq Deliberate vs dynamic targeting The failed targeting of Saddam Why targeting fails Incentives vs intelligence Impact of ‘humane' war How a Collateral Damage Estimate (CDE) is conducted Reconciling the fact that not all lives are worth the same Use of drones and accuracy of battle damage estimates Changing policy to reduce civilian harm Building bridges between NGOs and the military Impact of our wars on soldiers fighting them Marc and I discussed The Civilian Protection Podcast, of which he is a co-host. You can access all episodes of this excellent project here. Marc also mentioned the upcoming release of a US Department of Defence Memorandum, to be signed by the Secretary of Defence, that will direct the development of a comprehensive plan to mitigate and respond to civilian harm. But in early 1940, he was given a chance to put to use his gifts, when he was given command of the 7th Panzer Division. Although a novice as far as mechanized forces were concerned, he soon mastered the advantages and proved his leadership abilities again in the German offensive against the French channel coast in May. In early 1941, Rommel was placed in command of the Afrikakorps and sent to North Africa to aid Germany's ailing ally, Italy, in maintaining its position in Libya. It is here, in the deserts of North Africa, that Rommel earned his vaunted reputation, as well as his nickname, for his fox-like tactics. Winning significant victories against the British, it wasn't until a second battle to take el-Alamein in Egypt went against him that the “invincible” general was finally called home back to Europe. Hitler put Rommel back in northern France, to guard against an Allied invasion. Rommel's suggestions for the precautions necessary to repel an enemy invasion were not taken seriously, and he began to lose confidence in Hitler and Germany's ability to win the war. He assessed the support from his field commanders for removing Hitler from power and was also approached by colleagues to actually take the reins of government when Hitler was deposed. On D-Day, Rommel's prediction of disaster for Germany's position played itself out. Still, Hitler would not consider negotiations with the Allies. Rommel ended up in the hospital after his car was attacked by British bombers and he was forced off the road. Meanwhile, details of a failed assassination plot had come to Hitler's attention, including Rommel's contact with the conspirators. As Rommel was convalescing in his home at Herrlingen, two generals visited and offered him his choice: a public show trial or take his own life. 1066 Battle of Hastings. Almost three weeks after landing his invasion force in England, Duke William I of Normandy takes on King Harold II and his infantry at the Battle of Hastings. By sunset, the Anglo-Saxon Age ends and William the Conqueror's Norman rule begins, with Harold dead and William soon to be crowned king. 1912 Before a campaign speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Theodore Roosevelt, the presidential candidate for the Progressive Party, is shot at close range by saloonkeeper John Schrank while greeting the public in front of the Gilpatrick Hotel. Schrank's .32-caliber bullet, aimed directly at Roosevelt's heart, failed to mortally wound the former president because its force was slowed by a glasses case and a bundle of manuscript in the breast pocket of Roosevelt's heavy coat–a manuscript containing Roosevelt's evening speech. Schrank was immediately detained and reportedly offered as his motive that “any man looking for a third term ought to be shot.” Roosevelt, who suffered only a flesh wound from the attack, went on to deliver his scheduled speech with the bullet still in his body. After a few words, the former “Rough Rider” pulled the torn and bloodstained manuscript from his breast pocket and declared, “You see, it takes more than one bullet to kill a Bull Moose.” He spoke for nearly an hour and then was rushed to the hospital. 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh Makes his Literary Debut. The popular children's book character was created by British author A.A. Milne and first appeared in a collection of short stories called Winnie-the-Pooh. Winnie, a teddy bear, lives in Ashdown Forest, Sussex, England. The book followed his adventures in the forest with his friends Piglet, Owl, Rabbit, and Eeyore. 1944 German General Erwin Rommel—aka “The Desert Fox”—dies by suicide. Rommel is given the option of facing a public trial for treason, as a co-conspirator in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, or taking cyanide. He chooses the latter. 1947 U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. Captain Yeager was a combat fighter during World War II and flew 64 missions over Europe. He shot down 13 German planes and was himself shot down over France, but he escaped capture with the assistance of the French Underground. After the war, he was among several volunteers chosen to test-fly the experimental X-1 rocket plane, built by the Bell Aircraft Company to explore the possibility of supersonic flight. For years, many aviators believed that man was not meant to fly faster than the speed of sound, theorizing that transonic drag rise would tear any aircraft apart. All that changed on today, when Yeager flew the X-1 over Rogers Dry Lake in Southern California. The X-1 was lifted to an altitude of 25,000 feet by a B-29 aircraft and then released through the bomb bay, rocketing to 40,000 feet and exceeding 662 miles per hour (the sound barrier at that altitude). 1962 Missiles in Cuba bring the world to the brink of nuclear war. The Cold War burns hot as a US spy plane documents the first photographic evidence of Soviet nuclear warheads stockpiled in San Cristobal, Cuba, just 90 miles from Florida. What follows will be weeks of crisis negotiations between the US and USSR that bring the world perilously close to a nuclear exchange. 1964 Nikita Khrushchev is ousted as both premier of the Soviet Union and chief of the Communist Party after 10 years in power. He was succeeded as head of the Communist Party by his former protégé Leonid Brezhnev, who would eventually become the chief of state as well. The new Soviet leadership increased military aid to the North Vietnamese without trying to persuade them to attempt a negotiated end to hostilities. With this support and no external pressure to negotiate, the North Vietnamese leadership was free to carry on the war as they saw fit.
