JSA #57 / Hawkman #24 (2004)It's a double dose of #JSApril this week as we double up the conversation on the next two installments of the “Black Reign” story arc!In JSA, the team makes its way to Kahndaq, having to use air travel as opposed to magic travel because Nabu's being REAL cranky these days. Along the way, Power Girl calls Hawkman an ass, Black Adam bifurcates thru the JSA transport and all of Northwind's friends, with their bird talons and supple chests, look to make mincemeat of the heroes.Over in HAWKMAN, Doctor Fate seemingly turns heel as Nabu mucks up the JSA on the offensive. Hawkman clangs his own son on the head with his mace, Brainwave probes Shazam's teenage thoughts and Hourman is gutted….literally! All this plus Jen and Shawn offer a correction regarding Billy Batson's age and discuss Jason Todd's failed pro wrestling career.*** PROPER COMIC BOOK DISCUSSION STARTS AT 00:09:55 ***Promos: #JSAPRIL (https://fireandwaterpodcast.com/podcast/jsapril/) / THE MONITOR TAPES (http://themonitortapes.com)Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / Threads / Bluesky or email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.comAlso, get hip to all of our episodes on YouTube in its own playlist! https://bit.ly/WorstCollectionEverYTDownload the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you get your favorite shows. “And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart” (Genesis 6:5-6). When we see this kind of language in the Bible, how should we interpret it? In this episode, we discuss the function of anthropomorphic language in Scripture. We consider how it helps us to understand God, but also how it can lead to error if we minimize the Creator-creature distinction.

On this episode of Random Encounter, we're chatting about some of video game history's most prolific anthropomorphic animal crimefighters! First up, Jono binge-plays the brand-new remaster of the third season of Telltale Games' Sam & Max series: The Devil's Playhouse. Lovingly remastered by Skunkape Games, does this remaster bring the 2010 point-and-click up to speed? Or is it left as roadkill on the highway of history? Then, Hilary chats about the recent demo of the eagerly awaited revival of the Mana series: Visions of Mana. Coming out on August 29th, does this demo deliver that classic Mana taste?    Finally, Abe teams up with the turtles-in-a-half-shell to rescue Master Splinter in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Spintered Fate. Rather than the tried-and-true, beat-em-up genre, Splintered Fate pulls its inspiration from Hades. And boy, it pulls a LOT of inspiration! Is this Hades-like worth playing, or is it better left in the sewers? The natural world and human nature provide a variety of jumping off points for three poems that contrast the ego and experience of each poem's speaker with other perspectives, both observed and imagined. The discussion touches on the use of a strong opening conceit, lineation that cannily reflects breathwork, and leaning into specificity as strong poetic moves. Let's not forget the role that taste plays! Kathy's internal sommelier springs to life twice to flag questionable taste in wine and a discussion of the third poem under discussion highlights the role that direct experience and cultural awareness can play in appreciating the landscape of a poem. The discussion also briefly lingers on the question of whether singer Dionne Warwick is still alive and well and performing. At the time of writing these notes, she most certainly is!   Some links we think you might like:    The Spin Doctors Dionne Warwick, Do You Know the Way to San Jose (YouTube)   At the table: Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, Lisa Zerkle, Jason Schneiderman, Manuel López, Isabel Petry, Vivian Liu (sound engineer) John Wojtowicz grew up working on his family's azalea and rhododendron nursery and still lives in the backwoods of what Ginsberg dubbed “nowhere Zen New Jersey.” Currently, he teaches social work at Stockton University. This unexpected sanctuary,  strategically located  between Russia and Alaska,  has a post-apocalyptic feel  like the Statue of Liberty scene  at the end of the first Planet of the Apes, but cuter. White-coated inhabitants  can be seen sunning themselves  on the front porch,  poking frosty heads from turquoise  window frames, wandering  their 2.8 mile yard littered with rusted tanks  and construction debris. Pierre Boulle never wrote  a sequel to the Planet of the Apes.  Man loses. The End.  And with earth's history of ruling classes and our self-destructive tendencies, this is the likely scenario. If by some grace, we go out without taking  every living thing with us,  it gives me pleasure to picture  a sleuth of grizzly bears  as the heirs to Buckingham Palace.  As a whole, extraterrestrial  anthropologists will have to assume,  we cared very little  about the arctic fox, musk ox, and polar bear,  dooming these lifeforms  (and then ourselves). My zucchini is starting to flower and so is (for the first time)  the southern magnolia  planted a few springs back.  The groundhog I nicknamed Big Orange is on his hindlegs  taking in the evening news. And as the sun moves to give someone else a turn with the light, I consider that this might be the wildest I've ever been.

BILL MESNIK PRESENTS: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #51: MR MUDD AND MR GOLD by Townes Van Zandt (Poppy, 1971)

The first time I heard this tune was on Ricky Jay's collection of songs about cards and card players. Subsequently, I heard Steve Earle's story about how, when he was playing some dive for 4 or 5 people, Townes Van Zandt stumbles in and starts heckling him. It's Outlaw Country lore: Townes demands Earle play Wabash Cannonball- repeatedly. Finally, Steve demurs, claiming not to know the song, but lays this - Towne's own lyrically impossible gauntlet, line perfect, on his drunken hero, and thus begins a legendary friendship. The words fly by so fast here that it's hard to follow the narrative, which upon some study, reveals a poignant tale of a royal pair of Anthropomorphic, married playing cards doing battle through the avatars of Mud and Gold - a couple of hapless gambling addicts. The overall message being that winning and losing are matters of destiny, dictated by the fates, and beyond our control, so you might as well keep raising the stakes. Townes, an acknowledged tortured genius whose untimely death at age 52, left behind a sumptuous body of work, kept raising his stakes, living his addict's life as though his demise was pre-ordained. Even with this song, which he claimed was not written by himself, but by a “giant pencil in the sky”. Is it odd that Mr Mudd and Mr Gold would qualify as a “sunny” song? Not to me. Maybe that's because I loved Ricky Jay's winking panache, and he introduced it to me. Plus, Townes's break-neck torrent of lyrical showmanship is a thrill ride, and I smile as my brain endeavors to keep up with the writer's masterstrokes. Also, a good, ripping yarn will always bring a smile.

In this interview with Leona Cobham, granddaughter of pioneering pilot and aviation advocate, Sir Alan Cobham, we talk about her wonderful middle grade book, Flying Circus Takes to the Skies, which features the adventures of four anthropomorphic vintage aircraft: Spiff, the Spitfire; Vul, the Vulcan; Tom, the Tomcat; and Woody, the Tiger Moth. Leona was inspired to write the book by her experience working with children and her concern over boys becoming ever-more reluctant readers. She created these characters in the hopes that boys would get excited about both reading and aviation history. Her next installment of Airplane Adventures will include a female Nighthawk. The story is well-complemented by line drawings from aviation artist Timothy O'Brien. https://www.timobrienart.co.uk/Leona's book is very thoughtfully available in two English versions - one with British spellings, and one with American, so be sure to select the one appropriate for your young reader. Anthropomorphic products are items or objects that exhibit human-like characteristics, either in appearance, behavior, or personality. These products often feature human traits, such as faces, expressions, or even names, making them relatable and engaging to consumers.  In today's conversation, Dr. Rhonda Hadi, describes her research into anthropomorphic products and what she and her colleagues found regarding how certain cultural traits influence consumer preferences, shedding light on why we see more anthropomorphic products in particular markets. Key items explored: Cultural Influence: How cultural traits play a significant role in shaping consumer preferences for anthropomorphic products.  Marketing Strategies: Understanding the power collectivism and individualism is a valuable tool for marketers when making targeting decisions and deploying anthropomorphic marketing, packaging, or communications.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: An anthropomorphic AI dilemma, published by Tsvi Benson-Tilsen on May 7, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. [Metadata: crossposted from. First completed January 21, 2023.] Either generally-human-level AI will work internally like humans work internally, or not. If generally-human-level AI works like humans, then takeoff can be very fast, because in silico minds that work like humans are very scalable. If generally-human-level AI does not work like humans, then intent alignment is hard because we can't use our familiarity with human minds to understand the implications of what the AI is thinking or to understand what the AI is trying to do. Terms Here generally-human-level AI means artificial systems that can perform almost all tasks at or above the level of a human competent at that task (including tasks that take a long time). Here intent alignment means making artificial systems try to do what we, on reflection and all things considered, would want them to do. A system that doesn't have intents in this sense--i.e. isn't well-described as trying to do something--cannot be intent aligned. Here "how a mind works" points at the generators of the mind's ability to affect the world, and the determiners of [in what direction to push the world] a mind applies its capabilities. Let A be some generally-human-level AI system (the first one, say). (Here "dilemma" just means "two things, one of which must be true", not necessarily a problem.) The anthropomorphy dichotomy Either A will work internally like humans work internally, or not. Well, of course it's a spectrum, not a binary dichotomy, and a high-dimensional space, not a spectrum. So a bit more precisely: either A will work internally very much like how humans work internally, or very much not like how humans work internally, or some more ambiguous mix. To firmly avoid triviality: to qualify as "very much like" how humans work, in the sense used here, it is definitely neither necessary nor sufficient to enjoy walking barefoot on the beach, to get angry, to grow old, to have confirmation bias, to be slow at arithmetic, to be hairy, to have some tens of thousands of named concepts, to be distractible, and so on. What's necessary and sufficient is to share most of the dark matter generators of human-level capabilities. (To say that, is to presume that most of the generators of human-level capabilities aren't presently understood explicitly; really the condition is just about sharing the generators.) Anthropomorphic AI is scalable Suppose that A does share with humans the dark matter generators of human-level capabilities. Then A is very scalable, i.e. can be tweaked without too much difficulty so that it becomes much more capable than A. The basic case is here, in the section "The AI Advantage". (That link could be taken as arguing that AI will be non-anthropomorphic in some sense, but from the perspective of this essay, the arguments given there are of the form: here's how, starting from the human (anthropomorphic) baseline, it's visibly possible to make tweaks that greatly increase capabilities.) To add two (overlapping) points: Simple network effects might be very powerful. If ideas combine at some low rate with other ideas and with tasks, then scaling up the number of idea-slots (analogous to cortex) would give superlinear returns, just using the same sort of thinking that humans use. Imagine if every thought in the world was made available to you, so that as you're having your thoughts, the most especially relevant knowledge held by anyone brings itself to your attention, and is already your own in the same way as your knowledge is already your own. Imagine if the most productive philosophical, mathematical, and scientific quirks of thought, once called forth by some private struggles, were instantly copyable to ten thous...

Deep inside Utah's remote canyons and basins hides some of the strangest ancient petroglyphs and pictographs on planet earth. This mysterious rock art features strange anthropomorphic figures that feature bizarre characteristics such as six fingers, insect-like eyes, massive feet, elongated skulls, horns and varying scenes of chaos. Some of these depictions portray the victors carrying severed heads, and some figures stand as tall as nine feet tall. Were the ancient artists depicting what they saw or what their ancestors said they saw according to their oral traditions? And what might their connection be to the infamous Skinwalker Ranch, which is located only thirty miles from the most fantastic and fierce of all these petroglyphs? I will dive into all of these questions with explorer & landscape photographer Abbie Warnock-Matthews who lives in Utah and explores the many ancient petroglyph sites of the region. Have you ever talked to your pets as if they were human beings? If you have, you might have been accused of being anthropomorphic. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviours to non-human entities such as animals, objects, or even natural phenomena. Recently, Pat asked Glenn if he was being anthropomorphic when he was observing behaviours from his dogs, Remco and Valerie. While dogs do feel emotions like joy and fear, they might not necessarily express them in the same way as humans. Dogs might wag their tails when they're happy, but they might also wag their tails when they're nervous or excited. It's important to understand and respect the way that animals communicate. However, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk to our pets or treat them with kindness and respect. Building a strong bond with our pets requires communication and empathy. It's important to observe and understand their behaviours and needs, and to respond to them appropriately. Whether or not we're being anthropomorphic, it's always a good idea to treat our pets like valued members of our family. Here's an episode from the archives that you will enjoy. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 24, 2022 is: anthropomorphic • an-thruh-puh-MOR-fik • adjective Anthropomorphic means “described or thought of as being like human beings in appearance, behavior, etc.” // The story chronicles the adventures of a group of anthropomorphic forest critters. See the entry > Examples: “Dream and his six siblings are the anthropomorphic personifications of universal concepts. Despite their cosmic importance, they also bicker and bond like a real family.” — Christian Holub, Entertainment Weekly, 26 July 2022 Did you know? As word lovers, we are endlessly fascinated by the uniqueness and complexity of human language. Many species use sounds and gestures to communicate with one another, but the ability to speak in full sentences, to share abstract ideas, and to write and tell stories is distinctly anthropic. Brilliant though dogs may be, they can't verbalize their hopes and dreams. That is, unless those dogs are anthropomorphic—a trait common in works of fiction. From chatty chiweenies to tangoing tapirs, depictions of anthropomorphic animals abound thanks to our creative superpowers.
