This week, we're jamming through some Gender Jams with Mech and Dan from Chicago punk band Robot Civil War. We'll talk about the emotional highs and lows of Transgender Dysphoria Blues by Against Me!, gush about how cool Laura Jane Grace is, and play a musical guessing game that's quite... punctual. Casey Plett is an author from Canada. We talk about coming out in a Rolling Stone article, dissecting The Ocean, seeing Against Me! In Winnipeg on the Transgender Dysphoria Blues tour, low-key gesturing back to Reinventing Axl Rose w/ those first snare hits, the novel “Nevada” by Imogen Binnie, “Rough surf on the coast, I wish I could have spent the whole day alone,” misinterpreting the message of Fight Club, which of these songs are first-person?, pressure on trans artists to be positive and peppy, dead friends, “Black Me Out,” 10 years ago compared to now, the pre-backlash liminal space that this album was born into, poetic contemplation of mosh pits, Laura looked so happy in Winnipeg, ETC! delugepodcast@gmail.com twitter.com/routinelayup https://bsky.app/profile/caseyplett.bsky.social Rolling Stone article: https://archive.is/6YEAZ Casey Plett journal: https://caseyplett.wordpress.com/2022/03/12/i-found-an-old-journal-entry-about-when-i-saw-against-me-when-they-did-their-first-tour-after-laura-jane-transd/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/support
Steak Mtn (Christopher Norris) did the art for several Against Me! records including this one. We talk about the album White Crosses, the revolution being a lie, collaborating on art with Laura, Christopher's not a fan of anarcho-bucket music, getting that Warner Bros. money, this album has sheen but it also has teeth, the iconic Transgender Dysphoria Blues meat-cube album cover, scanning porn magazines and melting them in Photoshop, major-label tinkering, Laura being a teenage anarchist, The Ocean is an Against Me! song from the future, White Crosses is not pop-punk; it's pop-rock, more Florida talk, Robert McNamara's son is a farmer and I interviewed him once, Christopher sat on a flight with the manager who was suing the band, writing a book is hard, and he's not an artist nor is he an author, but he did design this record cover and you can buy his novel, The Holy Day, now. steakmtn.com https://www.rosebooks.co/ twitter.com/steakmtn twitter.com/routinelayup Email the show: delugepodcast@gmail.com Support the show: patreon.com/afterthedeluge --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/support

Laura Jane Grace originally pitched the concept for Transgender Dysphoria Blues as a fictional account of the experiences of a transgendered prostitute dealing with the various aspects of addiction and gender dysphoria. However, this was more than just a fictional tale to help her write, it was a way for her to start coming out as a trans person. What started as allegory became fact as she spent a few years transitioning into her new body and finding just the right bandmates to complete this gem of an album. w/ Siobhan from Have A Nice Apodcalypse! ep links: Siobhan's podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/3qzJLwsgRljImpD958X2eb?si=bc0d8bcfe1364a88 Against Me "Black Me Out" music video: https://youtu.be/iWB_b480-9c OUR DISCORD: https://discord.gg/2stA2P7pTC Flyover State Hotline - 1 608 HIT-NERD (608-448-6373) https://www.youtube.com/flyoverstatepark EVERYTHING ELSE: https://linktr.ee/FlyoverStatePark --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/albumconcepthour/support

Yes, that's right: all the albums before this one were stinky, hobo punk and it was only when the band sold out that they became listenable.(Truth time, Mikey wrote this description. To end our main 2022 slate, Kate has chosen a barnstomer of an album, 2014's totemic trans masterpiece, Transgender Dysphoria Blues by Against Me! Kate highlights her favourite moments, Louis holds himself back from an equally enthusiastic gush about this one (he would have picked it if she hadn't). An incredibly cathartic and powerful record, and one we implore you to listen to if you haven't before. BTW casual reminder that any anti trans nonsense isn't welcome here. Thanks!!!

Against Me! have always operated with as much self-awareness as they have articulate, external fury, and their latest album, 2016's Shape Shift With Me, continues the more introspective-leaning trend that Laura Jane Grace began on her 2014 opus Transgender Dysphoria Blues. But that hardly means their music is any less blisteringly anthemic, so it's easy to shape shift with Laura Jane Grace and co. on this incendiary session on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters. - Transgender Dysphoria Blues http://amzn.to/2dB0f4w

It's Bonus Song Thursday! Bill welcomes Brian back to talk about Laura Jane Grace, Miley Cyrus, and Joan Jett's cover of the Replacements "Androgynous." Brian, having missed out conversation about Against Me!'s Transgender Dysphoria Blues earlier in the week, share some of his thoughts on trans issues before we get into to talking about how we love this song and all its nonsense lyrics. We also compare and contrast Miley with Justin Bieber and discuss the role of innovation and experimentation in pop music. Then we read some listener emails about misogyny in AC/DC and Guns'n'Roses' lyrics and bands with changing lead singers!
With Brian out on tour, Bill welcomes podcaster Justin Tyler (SongSpotters.com) to talk about the seminal (already) trans punk rock anthem Transgender Dysphoria Blues (2014, Total Treble) by Against Me! Formed by then-name Tom Gable as a teenager in 1997, the band went on to become an icon known for their political fueled punk rock anthems. Surprising many, front woman Laura Jane Grace came out as transgender in 2012 and began transitioning to living her life as a woman. Using her own experiences and that of a fictional transgender prostitute, Grace penned and released this album a couple years later. Justin talks about how this album was his introduction to the band, and how it has factored into a cause that he feels close to. We then jump into discussing gender expression and toys, transgender dysphoria in the DSM V, how these songs are fantastic sing along songs, Atom Willard's awesome drumming, suicide rates in the trans community, how sexual identity and gender expression are troubles for many (including cisgender individuals), how Laura Jane Grace is a hero for taking on the responsibility of being a trans communicator, how even those with good intentions sometimes have trouble with pronouns, sci-fi author Ann Leckie's series that exists in a gender neutral world, and more as we make our way through there album track by track!

For ten years, the punk band Against Me! has been touring and protesting against war, politics and injustice. These protests are also to be found on their album “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” which they released in January 2014. Singer Laura Jane Grace put some very personal thoughts about her coming out as a transgender into the music of the album. We had the chance to meet Against Me! after their Hanover concert last year's April and speak to Laura Jane Grace. First we wanted to know if the album would have a different sound from today’s perspective.

We take the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico to interview teacher, researcher, and author of Zapatistas: Rebellion from the Grassroots to the Global, Alex Khasnabish. Alex takes us through the roots of the rebellion; the military conflict and subsequent negotiations; the unique and refreshing character of the movement; its broad influence both inside Mexico and internationally; and the ongoing grassroots work the Zapatistas continue to do today. In our debrief, we discuss the influence the Zapatistas had on us as young, irritating, and pedantic but well-meaning twits, and the connections between indigenous movements in places like Mexico and indigenous resurgence here in Canada.
