I'm sharing my journey of switching my pets to a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet and how it has completely transformed their health. We'll explore the history of kibble and why it became the go-to pet food despite its harmful effects, plus the corporate ties between big pet food brands and the veterinary industry that keep raw feeding from going mainstream. I'll also break down the benefits of raw diets, how to transition your pets safely, and tips on sourcing affordable, high-quality raw ingredients (including my best butcher hacks!).If you've ever wondered:

Earlier this year, we let you know about a concerning trend that pet owners have been reporting: Sick and deceased pets, assumed to be related to pet food, mostly Purina. At the time, most people blew it off and called these pet parents liars, said that it was all "fake news"Now, Susan Thixton from Truth About Pet Food has released the data obtained through a FOIA request. The pet parent reports to the FDA skyrocketed in January 2024... most of them were Purina products.Dog Food Advisor took that information to heart and has decided to remove all Purina products from their recommended dog food pages. Reviews will remain on the website.Join Isabel & I as we discuss what is going on and our hopes for the future.Send us a Text Message.

As cat behaviorists, we sometimes get involved with topics that aren't exactly behavior related, but that do affect our cats and their overall health and well-being. As cat parents, sometimes we are shocked about what we learn. This is the case when recently one of our clients was talking with us about cat food. What is best to feed your cats? What should we look for on the label? What should, and should not, be on the ingredient list? We contacted Susan Thixton, founder of the Association for Truth in Pet Food and advocate for cleaning up our pet foods, to ask the hard questions. While we though we knew what to look for (meat as first ingredient, no corn or wheat), what we learned from Susan shocked and dismayed us both. So what do we do? Do we need to start making our own cat and dog foods, and if we do that how do we make sure that our pets get the right nutritional support? Susan will answer those question, and we'll also talk about some ways to cook for your cat that are nutritionally complete, quick and easy to make, and very budget friendly, too! We've already fired up our crockpots to cook for our own cats. Warning: the topic of discussion sometimes gets very blunt, as we talk about what is REALLY in come of the popular pet foods we buy. It's important information but is sometimes hard to hear… EPISODE NOTES: Susan Thixton – The Truth About Pet Food!

Truth about Pet Food With Susan Thixton today on Its A Dogs Life with Angela Ardolino only on Cannabis Radio. Susan Thixton Animals have always been a big part of Susan's life. Her first dog as a child was a red Doberman named Duke that she competed in obedience trials with. Back then, it was standard to teach dogs using force. Even at 11 years old, and in defiance of those who were teaching her ‘how to train my dog', Susan refused to hurt her best friend. Her kind methods of training paid off, out of a possible 200 points, they consistently scored 199 and 199 1/2 in competitions. Duke was her best friend and he was treated with respect; he returned the love tenfold. At 15, Susan's parents bought me a horse for her birthday. Susan went from showing dogs to showing horses. Her respect for animals continued with her horses; she had the number one Quarter Horse gelding in the State of Kentucky for several years. Susan then went to college on a horsemanship scholarship; taking three horses with her to school.

Thirty years ago, a vet told Susan Thixton that dog food had given her dog bone cancer, and the dog had two weeks to live. "That day changed my life," she said. She dove into researching pet food, and found an industry doing its best to keep its practices opaque to pet owners. Too often, she discovered, we are literally feeding our dogs garbage. In the decades since, Susan has become a full time blogger on the subject and a consumer advocate, lobbying to try to improve the quality of the food we feed our pets. She and Annie discuss the difference the precise definitions of terms like "food" and "feed," "with" and "meal," and Susan reveals what she feels is the single most important thing to look for when selecting a pet food. I run the website TruthAboutPetFood.com, and run a consumer stakeholder organization association for truth in pet food, providing food consumers with a voice at pet food regulatory meetings, and with FDA, when they choose to listen to us. It's strictly their ballgame and sometimes they listen to us and sometimes they don't. Annie: Now I first found you through your blog Truth About Pet Food. Did the associations start the blog or vice versa? Susan: Truth About Pet Food started first and I was going to AFCO meetings and wanted to ask them for an advisory position to where, you know, I could give them consumer opinion more than just being in the audience. And they denied me year after year. And when a president, former president, finally went off the board of directors, he told me that the trick is we didn't want a blogger to be an advisor to AFCO.
